Please remember: What is happening in Texas + California is voter suppression and it is intentional. No one should have to wait two or three hours to vote. Voter suppression disproportionately disenfranchises working class voters.
Your periodic reminder that this was the headline a week ago today but you may not have read it because an actor slapped another actor at an awards show
This week, 40 billion tons of ice will melt in Greenland as the European heat wave moves north -- enough to measurably raise global sea levels.
This single heat wave will create a permanent change in our oceans that will linger for millennia.
We are in a climate emergency.
A heat wave is starting tomorrow over Greenland with Tmax reaching 25°C in tundra. The integrated anomaly of melt over the next 5 days (resp. over Summer 2019) will be 40Gt ~0.11mm (resp. ~0.65mm) sea level equivalent. Summer 2019 = what the models project for 2050 using RCP85.
hot take: when was the last time a climate protest of any kind headlined the NY Times, completely dominated your timeline, disrupted exactly zero working class folks, did no damage — and explicitly named the fossil fuel industry?
these protestors are brave. we need more of them.
Climate protesters threw cans of tomato soup at Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” at the National Gallery in London. The gallery said the work was unharmed aside from “some minor damage to the frame.”
Sorry to be harping so much on this climate change thing, but we only have 12 years to complete a total transformation of global society before we lock in irreversible planetary change for millions of years so I'm eager to get started
Uhhh... about bitcoin... it's actually ruining the planet.
The bitcoin computer network currently uses as much electricity as Denmark. In 18 months, it will use as much as the entire United States.
Something's gotta give. This simply can’t continue.
This is huge, huge news.
Today, the Netherlands Supreme Court ruled that radical emissions reductions — 25% by the end of 2020 — are *mandatory*.
This is the first time in the world that a citizens-led lawsuit has found a legal duty to prevent climate change.
The Dutch Supreme Court confirms that the State has a positive obligation to reduce GHG emissions in order to protect our right to life. Thank you

Meanwhile, on the hottest day in the history of France, here’s shocking video of police spraying tear gas in the faces of climate activists in Paris.
This happened today. Do not look away.
This is worth repeating over and over:
The most horrific thing Brazil's new president, Jair Bolsonaro, has planned is privatization of the Amazon rainforest. With just 12yr remaining to remake the global economy and prevent catastrophic climate change, this is planetary suicide.
A friendly reminder: You don’t need to spend two weeks on a boat to do your part to avert our climate emergency.
You just need to do everything you can, with everyone you can, to change everything you can.
If we all did that, my loves, it would be enough. ❤️🌿🌍
A new study confirms that global warming has triggered an irreversible collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which will alone raise global sea levels by 10 feet.
It's still up to us to decide if that ice takes 500 years to melt, or 50.
We are in a climate emergency.
The West Antarctic Ice Sheet is melting and has probably passed the tipping point to its complete demise, causing a long-term sea-level rise of 3 meters. But is that our fault? That has long been unclear, but now a new paper in NatGeo finds: yes, it is.
If you're upset that Miss America is dropping its swimsuit competition, wait until you hear about the 4,600 Americans that were left to die by their government without power or health care or clean water after decades of racist, colonialist neglect.
For the second day in a row, Australia has broken its hottest day in recorded history.
The nationwide average temperature on December 18 was 41.9°C (107.4°F) -- across an area the size of the U.S. -- that's unthinkable.
We are in a climate emergency.
Based on preliminary analysis, yesterday, Australia recorded its hottest day on record. The nationally-averaged maximum daytime temp was 41.9 °C exceeding the record set on Tuesday, 40.9 ºC. You can view the top ten highest daily maximum temps here:
This is a must-read thread.
Bottom line:
@AOC
is right. Voters strongly support the Green New Deal in almost every district in America. We must reshape society for the 21st century, built on justice and climate resilience—but corporations want the status quo. This is our fight.
🚨 Trump just signed an executive order using emergency powers to gut the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act, waiving the requirement for environmental review for construction projects. 🚨
Holy shit.
Sometimes, sea level rise happens all at once.
In Antartica, scientists are uncovering a process that will be enough to remake the world's coastlines in decades.
This is the most important article I've ever written. Please read & share:
Preventing the Earth from descending into a lifeless husk of a planet in a geological blink of an eye is technologically possible, experts say. But it will require confiscating unearned wealth from billionaires and ending the pointless wars we've been fighting for generations.
Green New Deal is technologically possible, experts say. But it will cost trillions of dollars, require expansive new taxes and federal programs, and could not be accomplished within the 10-year timeframe that supporters say is necessary.
2,975 people died in Puerto Rico. It is the worst humanitarian disaster in modern American history.
For the first time, here are the names of hundreds of the dead. And their stories, told by grieving family members.

No hurricane in Atlantic history has ever rapidly intensified from a high-end Category 4 to a high-end Category 5.
#Dorian
was the first.
We are in a climate emergency.
In the last 24 hour, Hurricane
#Dorian
intensified from 130kt to 160kt ... in fact it did this in under 9 hours.
Rapid intensification is an impressive enough feat, but becomes extremely rare from high initial intensities. From 130kt, it is unprecedented in the Atlantic.
This is the first time in human history our planet's atmosphere has had more than 415ppm CO2.
Not just in recorded history, not just since the invention of agriculture 10,000 years ago. Since before modern humans existed millions of years ago.
We don't know a planet like this.
Joe Biden needs 53% of the remaining vote to win the nomination.
Bernie Sanders needs 54%.
Don't get swept up in the narrative that this is impossible.
This

This is what it feels like to create change on the scale that’s necessary.

Hurricane Hillary is now explicitly forecast to remain tropical over southern California.
It would be a unique event in modern meteorological history.
Parts of the California deserts could receive 2-3 years of rainfall (>10" / >250mm) in 2-3 days.
OK you guys, my intention is not to scare anyone with this message.
But Hurricane
#Florence
—the storm bound for North Carolina—is going to be about the size of North Carolina when it arrives.
This is what it will look like, according to the latest high-res model prediction:
We've officially crossed over to 418ppm, the highest atmospheric carbon dioxide levels in millions of years — before the pyramids, before the ice age, before modern humans existed.
Humanity has never experienced our planet like this.
We are in a climate emergency.
This is not stunning at all. Our lives are literally on the line. Of course we're going to do what it takes to preserve the habitability of the only planet in the known universe that harbors life.
This weekend, Hurricane Hilary will be moving over the driest parts of the USA.
Hilary will bring 5-10 inches (125-250mm) of rain to places like Palm Springs, Death Valley and Las Vegas.
That's 2-3 *years* worth of rain in 2-3 days.
None of this has ever happened before.
So, the heat wave in Canada was so strong that it created extreme wildfire conditions, and when the fires started the heat plumes were so strong they created severe thunderstorms, which are so strong they're creating lightning that's sparking new fires
Satellite view of British Columbia interior confirms that the severe thunderstorms occurring at present are indeed pyro-convective events: wildfire-generated severe storms, complete with abundant lightning and strong winds. Precipitation may be minimal to non-existent...

Here’s what people need to understand about
@BernieSanders
’ new climate plan:
This is it.
This is our one chance to build a just & equitable world before the climate emergency tips out of control.
We need to give it everything we’ve got. This plan does.
The West Coast is on fire, right now.
Millions of people are breathing deadly air, right now.
This is going to keep getting worse every year unless we transform our society, right now.
We are in a climate emergency.
Biden camp has largely avoided hitting back at Bernie but the candidate occasionally can’t seem to help it.
Biden hits Bernie’s climate plan: “There's not a single solitary scientist that thinks it can work."
The first peer-reviewed study of bitcoin’s energy consumption confirms our fears:
Bitcoin’s energy consumption is growing at 20% *per month* and is effectively erasing decades of progress on renewable energy.
Today is going to be one of the hottest days ever recorded in the history of California.
There will be people who die today because of the heat. There will be people who die today because of the wildfire smoke.
It's here, this is it. This is climate change.
This kind of heat happens in the deserts but it is RARE for L.A. to reach 110°. This weekend heat wave is serious - the NWS in LOS Angeles is calling it deadly 🥵
100° plus for just about everyone - overnight lows in the 80s.

There is no tangible difference between "climate change is a hoax" and "climate change is real but doing anything about it on the scale the science demands is unrealistic".
Both are climate denial. Both lead to inaction.
Irreversible tipping points are just that: Irreversible.
Beira, Mozambique “will go down in history as having been the first city to be completely devastated by climate change,” said Graça Machel, the country’s former first lady.
UN: This is the worst weather disaster in history in the Southern Hemisphere.
Merrill Field has hit 90°F. This is the warmest temperature ever measured in the Anchorage Bowl. From 1943 to 1952, this was the official climate site for Anchorage. The current Official site, Anchorage Intl. AP. has been as warm as 85°F - tying their all-time record.
@AlaskaWx
Today’s air quality in New York City was the worst in more than 14 years. The concentration of fine particulate matter was seven times the
@WHO
's healthy limit.
The cause? A plume of smoke spanning the entire continent.
We are in a climate emergency.
Yesterday was the warmest day in recorded history on the Greenland ice sheet.
Today is its biggest melt day. More than 12 billion tons of water will have entered the ocean by tonight, permanently raising sea levels.
We are in a climate emergency.
1/4 The last MAR based numbers for the current heat wave over Greenland are
31-JUL: Record of ice sheet temperature!
T2m=+0.55°C (vs -0°C in 11-JUL-2012). Anomaly:6.8°C
01-AUG: Record of ablation rate (minimum SMB)!
-12.5 GT/day (vs 11.7 in 2012)
Despite last week's historic cold snap, it's 80°F in Dallas, Texas today.
Across parts of the South, this year's Spring is arriving 20+ days earlier than normal.
That's climate change.
Hurricane Laura is heading directly for Lake Charles, Louisiana, a majority Black city with metro area population of 225,000.
The per capita income is $22,855.
This is the crossroads of the climate emergency and environmental racism of the oil industry.
The Greenland ice sheet is currently going through a major melting this week, covering almost half its surface — unprecedented in its extent for this early in the year.
This has not happened before.
The Northern Sea Route through the Arctic north of Siberia is now open. In February.
There is no multi-year ice left there anymore.
We are in a climate emergency.
A gas tanker & icebreaker made it from China to Yamal in the 1st transit of the Northern Sea Route in February, "confirming that year-round safe navigation is possible," Russia says. There's no multi-year ice left there.
@BarentsNews
Profoundly disheartening to see people pushing for a carbon-free economy as soon as possible being labelled "far left".
That's not a radical position. That's what is *required by science for us to survive as a civilization*.
To be clear, I'm not stating that wanting action on climate change means you're "far left." I'm saying people pushing for 100% renewables immediately in the name of climate change is "far left."
JUST IN: The U.S. National Climate Assessment is now public.
This is the report that the Trump Administration doesn’t want you to see. Years in the making, released on the day after Thanksgiving.

Here are some of the main highlights:
/1
Puerto Rico, Day 103:
—About 1.5 million people still w/o power
—Hundreds of thousands still w/o clean water
—Still a humanitarian emergency
It's New Year's Day. Puerto Rico is still in crisis. One of the worst injustices in American history is still being ignored by leaders.
Yesterday was Africa’s hottest reliably measured temperature in recorded history: 124.3°F (51.3°C) in Algeria
Africa has 16% of the world's population—and produces just 3.8% of all greenhouse gases.
Climate change is fundamentally a story of injustice.
It's December.
America is virtually snow-free.
Record high temperatures are outpacing record lows 100-to-1.
The seasons themselves are confused.
Where's winter?
Just so we're clear about the current status of climate breakdown, the Arctic Ocean north of Siberia hasn't even started to refreeze yet.
~20 years ago, it would be entirely frozen by now. This is not normal.
We are in a climate emergency.
"I view myself as a transitional president. It's a transition to YOUR generation. You're the best educated; you're the most open; you're the least prejudiced generation in American history. THE FUTURE IS YOURS, AND I'M COUNTING ON YOU." -
@JoeBiden
Kudos to
@chrislhayes
and
@AOC
for this hour-long primetime discussion on the biggest challenge we face as a species and a path to a future that works for everyone.
And that's it. By a vote of 51-49, taken at nearly 2 a.m. on a Saturday morning, the U.S. Senate has just voted to gut the U.S. tax code, with implications for every American.
A bunch of old white men are applauding as democracy dies in the darkness.
Freeways in Detroit are "littered with abandoned vehicles" and 911 services are overwhelmed after 6.5 inches of rain fell last night.
Heavy rain is forecast to continue for the next six days.
This is not normal. We are in a climate emergency.
This week a town in Canada overheated & burned to the ground, Exxon freely admitted they're fucking us & the open ocean caught fire. We need to admit it:
We are in a climate emergency.
We need revolutionary tactics to get a livable future for everyone.
A little bit earlier this evening, the price for Canadian crude oil went negative.
In the Alberta tar sands, at least for the moment, oil is now worthless. This is a turning point in the climate movement.
"I'm stressed out all the time, but this is not supposed to be a comfortable job."

Web-exclusive: Extra conversation with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Large parts of the West have received less than half their normal rainfall so far this winter.
In parts of Northern California, where this should be the peak of rainy season, wildfire potential is 200% above normal.
We are in a climate emergency.

Yesterday was the busiest day in the history of human aviation.
Today was the hottest day in the history of Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Paris, France.
We are in a climate emergency.
The northernmost permanent weather station in the world, just 440 miles from the North Pole, has warmed to 43°F today -- in the middle of months-long darkness during what is normally the coldest time of the year.
This is simply shocking. I don't have the words.
Cape Morris Jesup (

Doomsday update just dropped:
"If Thwaites Glacier collapses, it opens the door for the rest of the West Antarctic ice sheet to slide into the sea. ... It’s not only goodbye Miami, but goodbye to virtually every low-lying coastal city in the world."
Current wet bulb temperatures in Texas and Louisiana are 90-94°F.
The human body cannot survive a wet bulb above 95°F for more than six hours. You literally can't sweat enough to cool down and you will die.
There's never been a summer like this.
We are in a climate emergency.
Trump, to hurricane victims: "We are with you, we love you, and we will always pull through together, always"
Trump's FEMA, literally earlier today announced they were "officially cutting off" food & water aid to Puerto Rico, where more than a million people are still w/o power.
