We're gearing up for the
#Artemis
launch on August 29! But wait, Chris, isn't this happening in Florida? In August? You know, a place that gets a lot of
#lightning
in the summertime?
Yes, yes it is. How about a thread that has a bunch of stats and maps? ⚡️🚀🌕🧵 (1/12)
Ok, so now that I've picked my jaw up off the ground...
Yesterday was a terrible
#pyroCB
#lightning
event in
#BCwx
and into
#ABwx
. Between 3pm June 30 and 6am July 1 (Pacific Time), the North American Lightning Detection Network detected 710,117 total lightning events.
Incredible shot of lightning hitting a Boeing 787 in the Seattle area this afternoon. You can clearly see how the lightning enters the plane at the nose and exits near the tail.
The electricity travels through the shell of the plane and keeps passengers safe.
Can you see the plane just below the clouds? Direct Hit on an A380 out of SeaTac. If you were in the South Puget Sound at about 4:45pm, this is what you heard

The multiple MCSes yesterday produced a ton of
#lightning
- more than 1.7 million events detected by the National Lightning Detection Network. This is in the top-10% of lightning events that occur each year.
Hey
@RedRocksCO
, how about working with those of us in the event/weather safety communities to ensure your weather plans are up to snuff. This was a well forecast event and there should have been no one in the venue after the lightning began around 7:15pm.
Life update:
I will be leaving Vaisala at the end of March after 8 and a half years.
I have accepted a position at the University of Wisconsin as manager of the new Wisconsin Environmental Mesonet (Wisconet).
Did a quick search for
#lightning
within the orange box between noon September 18 and 10am this morning. Nearly 500,000 events, with most of those occurring since midnight.

BREAKING: Oklahoma has supplanted Florida as the

capital of the United States, according to new data released today. Over the last 5 years,

has more total lightning per square kilometer than

I've always found
#volcanoes
and
#lightning
to be fascinating - that
#Krakatau
/
#Krakatoa
has been producing volcanic lightning for nearly 24 hours and in these quantities is nothing short of amazing to me.
I’ve been watching radar for a long time…this is one of the top offerings for inland hurricane I’ve ever seen. And that includes Erin reintensifying over Oklahoma.
The first

Rates are exceeding 10,000/hour - the most extreme I've ever seen!

Just had this radar loop of

#Krakatoa
#volcano
continues to produce significant amounts of
#lightning
3 days into the eruption. Here's a full 3 day loop of the GLD360 detected lightning - absolutely amazing!
Look, I grew up watching Bill Nye, but cold air squeezing warm air, gravity, and the earth’s spin don’t make hurricanes go brrrr. He shouldn’t be on
@CNN
or
@MSNBC
talking about this.
We have legitimate experts in climate change and legitimate experts in hurricanes. Reach out.
Zoomed in view of what appears to be a significant volcanic
#lightning
event from
#Krakatoa
. Reports of dozens dead from a
#tsunami
caused by the volcano.
Total
#lightning
count for UTC day June 22. A total of 54,329 lightning events detected across California.
The most in a single day since September 8, 2017, when 56,059 were detected. This is the 6th highest daily total since 2015.
Unfortunately, 1 woman was killed.
#CAwx
Besides
#RedRocks
being under a severe thunderstorm warning starting at 9:04pm last night, between 7:16 and 11pm, there wasn’t a single period longer than 5 minutes that didn’t have

within 15 km (9.3 miles) of the amphitheater.

Red Rocks is usually pretty good about advising people to get to a safe place, don’t know the full details here, but it was pretty apparent Red Rocks was in the firing line of this storm. And they were placed under a SVR at 9:04.

Since the lightning began last night, the National Lightning Detection Network has detected more than 25,000 total lightning events across California. According to my
#AMS2021
research, this would rank in the top-2% of daily California lightning totals.
#LightningSafety
I have never seen a forecast like this for a non-mountain, non-nor’easter event. And it goes without saying that I have never been in a forecast like this.
#COwx
Missed the totality path by that much🤏 Our location still had great views of a partial eclipse with 99.97% of the sun obscured. While we remained in the light, the shadow of totality can be seen extending to the right of the frame as it passed through northern VT/NH.
#eclipse
We want people to pay attention to what meteorologists have to say on social media, and then you have meteorologists on social media who find the most unlikely scenario and blast it out for the clicks. And we wonder why there is so much mistrust around science.
“What’s your major?”
“Meteorology.”
“Cool, I love space.”
“No, it’s weather.”
“Are you going to be on TV?”
“Maybe.”
“Must be nice to be wrong half the time...”
“Haha, haven’t heard that before.”
“What’s the weather going to be like next month?”
“I have to go.”
We need fewer Bill Nyes, Neil Degrasse Tysons, and Michio Kakus talking about science to major news sources. Being a physicist doesn’t make you good at geology or climate change.
Media friends: reach out to scientists in the field you’re reporting on
So disappointing that someone as well-respected and intelligent as Michio Kaku would go on live TV and absolutely butcher this story to a massive audience
This “Earth core stopped spinning” thing has become the biggest SciComm failure in recent memory
As I was telling some people yesterday, be prepared for people to be upset that this gets rated 4 because of building standards. There is also the likelihood that these towns didn’t have the damage indicators that could rate at a 5.
But what really irks me: the obsession with 5
EF4 was what I thought the Rolling Fork tornado would be rated as.
EF5s simply are not given out these days, unless it compares to Jarrell or Joplin. This was what was said after the Kentucky tornado 2 years ago. Basically, it needs to be what Fujita would've rated F6 to get EF5
This is about 5% of Canada's annual

There are the waterspouts most people think of, generally produced under growing cumulus clouds, and then there’s this.
This is a legitimate tornado over the water produced by a thunderstorm.
Huge

outbreak in convective core of
#Ida
in the last 30 minutes. It appears to be dominated by positive strokes, which is something we saw in the rapid intensification phase of Hurricane Michael.
Cat brushes against a Christmas tree: -ornaments shatter-
Strong tornado destroys a house: -ornaments fine-
It’s always remarkable the kinds of damage you see (or don’t) after tornadoes. I think that is going to continue to be one of the great mysteries in this field.
Looks like
@vaisalaxweather
released the Annual
#Lightning
Report today and the National Lightning Detection Network detected 242,101,157 total lightning events across the United States. This is the most total detections since at least 2016 (which had 241,159,991).
*clears throat*
You’ve waited 12 long months, I finally set it free. You tell me, “I can’t lie, it’s the Vaisala Annual

All the lightning stats that are fit to print!
Each year, one place in each state gets more

than anywhere else. These are the lightning capitals. In 2021,
@FlatoniaChamber
#TXwx
was the overall United States lightning capital. Where are the rest of them? Find out here:
The National
#Lightning
Detection Network detected 10 CG strokes within 1 mile of Launch Complex 39B between 1:04pm and 2:17pm. Four of the strikes had high potential for damage to metal objects (like a rocket).

Remember as we head into spring, there is a TON of freely available material developed by the NWS Warning Decision Training Division that can give you a refresher on severe storm meteorology. Check it out.
This was a 6-stroke

flash that occurred at 6:49pm.
Between 2010 and 2021, 289 cloud-to-ground flashes occurred within 1 mile of the White House, an average of 24 per year.

Instead of taking my big clock off the wall to change it, I made a high resolution cloud-to-ground

area. This may be a first of it's kind and shows the most lightning prone regions of the property. Data 2016-2021.
#LightningSafety
Sounds like Splash Mountain
@WaltDisneyWorld
was struck by
#lightning
yesterday. NLDN detected two CG strokes at 1510 and 1517 UTC within a couple hundred meters of the ride.
#FLwx
Looking at the California
#lightning
data again as the storms taper off. Between 00 UTC June 22 and 13 UTC this morning, NLDN detected 66,897 total lightning events. 45,129 were in-cloud, 21,768 were cloud-to-ground. This is a bigger event than the August 2020 event.
#CAwx
Another day, more ridiculousness.
Just as NWS should review the ambassador program, they should review every chat user and remove people who are not legitimate EM/media users.
We often talk about the “Storm Chasers” - the shoddy contractors who come in after a storm to try and make a buck.
And then there’s this. Trying to make a buck off of people wondering if their house is still standing.
An extraordinary amount of

in the 24 hours leading up to the landfall of

The

#Volcano
eruption wound down a couple hours ago. In the 21 hours that it was erupting and producing volcanic lightning, GLD360 detected 191,309 events. For context: Anak Krakatau 2018 had ~337k over 7 days.
We don’t yet have enough information from the
#HungaTongaHungaHaapai
#HungaTonga
#volcano
eruption to know about its effects on the climate. We’re waiting on the data. I haven’t seen any volcanologists saying it was larger than Pinatubo. Don’t share misinformation.
Personally, as someone who knows lightning...this looks and sounds fake.
Lightning that close to the cameras would have completely saturated the audio and video and all you would have heard is a loud boom and the video would have been entirely blown out.
If you don’t know Len, you should. She’s an incredible writer (has a book “Poyums” coming out even!) and educator. Now she’s helping drive awareness of climate change.

Lots of reports of a BIG BOOM in northern Virginia. I also heard it in NW DC. Looks like source may have been lightning strike/thunder around Reston about 5-10 mins ago. Jason, CWG
Buckle up,

…we’re going to be seeing our greatest hits in the coming days:
* It shoulda been a HIGH
* That shoulda been a 5
* Did you see the stupid thing Chaser X did?
* Hey @ NWS check this radar image
* NWS shoulda had a warning out 23 minutes earlier

Here’s an updated CONUS average

density map showing total lightning from 2015-2019. An average of 216,978,014 in-cloud pulses and cloud-to-ground strokes detected by the National Lightning Detection network each year.
Thunderstorms in general are much less common along the West Coast of North America than across nearly all other parts of the continent. Some parts of coastal California see one (or even fewer!) thunderstorms in a typical year.

The really unfortunate thing is that this could very likely INCREASE fire danger later this year.
(1) Grasses and other vegetation that dries quickly will green up/grow more as a result of this moisture, leaving lots of dry fuels this summer.
Our sweet Bailey crossed over the Rainbow Bridge this morning. I had her for 11 and a half years, ever since she was found on the streets of Norman on May 9, 2010. Our hearts are broken.
Dear people of earth, please don’t use gargantuan hailstones for margaritas. The ice really isn’t that clean and you could be missing out on setting a record!
