Congresswoman, dog mom, Michigander. Fighting for better jobs, lower health care costs, and cleaner politics. Running to be Michigan’s next U.S. Senator.
Today, I’m announcing my run to be Michigan’s next U.S. Senator.
We need a new generation of leaders that thinks differently, works harder, and never forgets that we are *public servants*
I just received a call from Tom Barrett conceding the election. I’m so grateful to the people of mid-Michigan for their support. Tonight, voters here made clear that the politics of division are not what they want for our families or our state. 1/
If tonight’s news is true, Michigan’s 1931 state law banning abortion would snap back into effect, making any abortion illegal in our state — even if the mom will die, or if she was raped by a family member. No exceptions. 1/2
Come on, Mike.
In your 14 years in Congress, you co-sponsored FOUR bills — the last one with Jim Jordan in 2013 — that would have the same effect as the Alabama Supreme Court’s IVF ruling, making it impossible for millions of couples to have a family. You don’t get to run away…
IVF has been critical to helping Americans grow their families and realize the blessing of life and parenthood. I oppose any and all efforts to restrict access to IVF — period.
Mr. Junge: If you are going to talk about my mother, you should know what you're talking about. She deserves that, and so do the 310,000 people in our district who have a pre-existing condition like she did.
#MI08debate
My mom, who died in 2011 of ovarian cancer, had breast cancer many years before. When I saw
@RepMikeBishop
smiling at the White House after voting to gut protections for pre-existing conditions, something inside me broke. And it's why I'm running for Congress.
My poor mother is turning over in her grave. The House has already voted to codify Roe — let all Senators be on record on this one in an up or down vote. 2/2
This is how I know the ground is shifting in Michigan on the issue of gun safety: Since Monday, I’ve received more messages of support for MSU than I can count, including a ton of texts & calls from Republican constituents & leaders who I know to be avid hunters & sportsmen. 1/
Actually, at that moment I was on the phone with the State Department trying to get American citizens out of Israel and Gaza. Meanwhile, all the Republicans have done is fight each other because they can’t elect a speaker. Get your house in order so we can all get to work!
Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. To stand up for their fundamental freedoms. I believe this is ours.
That’s why I’m running for reelection as President of the United States. Join us. Let’s finish the job.
Comparing gun safety measures to the mass extermination of 6 million people is hateful & ignorant, and it comes from party leaders who are out of ideas & catering to the fringe of the fringe. Delete it, apologize, and figure out what kind of party you want to be.
#History
has shown us that the first thing a government does when it wants total control over its people is to disarm them. President Reagan once stated, “if we lose
#freedom
here, there is nowhere else to escape to. This is the last stand on Earth.”
#2A
#GOP
As much as I want to, I cannot fix the Republican Party. What I can do is, when they put up extreme candidates with extreme views, I can beat them over and over at the ballot box until they decide, as a party, that they must walk another path.
.
@Liz_Cheney
& I certainly don’t agree on every issue, but at a moment when the heart of our democracy is being challenged, her voice & leadership have been indispensable. Looking forward to welcoming her to
#MI07
next week.
Tale of two dinners: While Donald Trump was in Michigan last night promoting his message of division,
@ReverendWarnock
delivered a powerful message on unity and inclusion at the
@DETROITNAACP
Freedom Fund dinner.
We had a packed room, and I was thrilled to be in attendance with…
My opponent recently removed any mention of choice from his website, hiding his 100% pro-life stance. According to him, it’s not an issue that’s important to voters, saying the update was likely “based upon the issues that were most salient right now.”
Looks like another Republican candidate has removed abortion language from his website.
This time it’s Tom Barrett, who is challenging Elissa Slotkin for a U.S. House seat in Michigan.

It was only seven years ago that Michigan was red from top to bottom – we had just voted for Trump, and had a Republican Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, State Legislature, and congressional delegation. Through hard work and strategic planning, we have flipped all…
I swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution. If true, these new allegations against the President are a threat to our national security, and constitute an impeachable offense.
Last May, when I saw
@RepMikeBishop
in the Rose Garden, beaming & proud that he had just voted to repeal healthcare, something just broke in me. So I decided to get in the race for
#MI08
.
Great to host
@CNN
to discuss this & other reasons we need new leaders in Washington:
Mr. President, my name is Elissa Slotkin. I served 3 tours in Iraq w/ CIA, served both GOP+Dem admins and believe in putting my country before anything else. In Congress, I'll be accountable to Michigan voters -- not Leader Pelosi, not corporate special interests, or anyone else.
Congressman Bishop is doing a GREAT job! He helped pass tax reform which lowered taxes for EVERYONE! Nancy Pelosi is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on his opponent because they both support a liberal agenda of higher taxes and wasteful spending!
THANK YOU,
@MalloryMcMorrow
! Since 2017, when we both began our fight to flip our respective Republican seats, I have been grateful for your friendship and your support. It’s been amazing to watch you succeed. Your endorsement in this Senate race means a great deal.
Today, I'm endorsing
@ElissaSlotkin
to be Michigan's next US Senator. She's an incredible colleague, an incredible person, and an incredible friend who's had my back since (literally) Day 1 - long before almost anyone else. That's why I know she'll have yours too:
5/ There is no need to choose between having a gun for sport and caring about protecting our kids. We can do both. But folks in DC think it’s heresy to even come to the table to discuss how to keep our kids safe from gun violence. They don’t get it.
In Michigan, we believe in the fundamental rights of all people, even when we disagree. We’re not threatened by books or the free exchange of ideas. And as you may have noticed last November, we reject the politics of division and hate. Sell that junk somewhere else.
Since the repeal of Roe, I’ve had dozens and dozens of women quietly approach me to tell me their very personal stories of miscarriages, D&Cs, abortions, serious health complications and the fear and desperation that comes with making such a personal choice, especially when you…
Kate Cox, the 31-year-old Texas mother at the center of a legal battle over whether she can legally terminate her pregnancy after learning her unborn baby has a fatal condition, has left the state to get an abortion, per
@KilloughCNN
and
@edlavaCNN
.
Ooooohhhhiiiiiooooooo!!! Midwest is showing UP tonight!!!
Congrats, Ohio — and welcome to the family of states where voters have protected reproductive freedom!
Thank you to my friend,
@Jamie_Raskin
, for your endorsement in this Senate race! You are a great friend, an incredible leader, and a true champion in the House.
It has been so great working alongside you (especially since our offices are right across the hall from each other!),…
Just now: Senate Republicans block a bill to protect IVF & other fertility services for veterans & service members.
"This should not be controversial -- especially if Republicans are serious, even just in the slightest, about supporting IVF," says
@PattyMurray
.
4/ But this is what I think politicians in Washington are totally missing. They’re the last ones to get the memo. The country is changing, while our elected leaders are still scared of the vocal minority who refuse to talk about any gun safety changes whatsoever.
At his rally tonight in Michigan, Donald Trump said that the outcome of the
@UAW
strike “doesn’t make a damn bit of difference.” He rambled, he lied about his record on standing with workers, and he seemed to completely miss the point that if the US doesn’t make the next…
2/ These folks call to tell me that while they love their hobby & don’t want someone taking their guns, they also can’t stand to see the gun violence we’re seeing again and again and again. These folks are just as fed up and angry as anyone who’s been calling me.
It’s been a rollercoaster of a night. To recap: two partisan officials on the Wayne County Board of Canvassers tried to deny hundreds of thousands of votes out of Detroit – then reversed course due to the public outcry.
BREAKING - The Ohio Secretary of State's office has certified petition signatures for the proposed abortion amendment for the November 7 ballot. If approved by voters, it would enshrine abortion rights into the state's constitution. 🧵
Serving the people of
#MI08
is the greatest honor of my life, and I am proud to continue to serve you.
Thank you to all those who trusted me with their votes. To those who did not, I am here to serve you, too, as long as I am in office.
Now let's get to work.
Hey MSU, this is awesome - these elections could come down to student turnout, so stay in line! Not registered? No problem! You can do both at Brody as long as you’re in line by 8pm. So come on down, it’s a party!
I’d challenge any of my Republican colleagues to explain to a 17-year-old who’s been impacted by gun violence what they’re doing to keep our kids safe. The answer is nothing.
Our new ad was featured this morning on
@MSNBC
! In the video, I tell the story of my mom, who died in 2011 of ovarian cancer -- but it could be about anyone's mom. RT to help us share the video.
My mom, who died in 2011 of ovarian cancer, had breast cancer many years before. When I saw
@RepMikeBishop

Thank you again to everyone who was a part of this grassroots-powered campaign. The full results are; we received 172,878 votes to Rep. Bishop's 159,804. Dave & I are enjoying a day at home -- the dogs are the happiest constituents because they get a proper romp around the farm!
16 people, including 3 from my district, submitted fake electoral votes to keep Trump in office even after he lost the 2020 election. In America, we have rules and laws. If crimes were committed, especially relating to something as precious as our democracy, those responsible…
Attorney General Dana Nessel is leveling felony charges against 16 Republicans who signed a certificate falsely stating that Donald Trump won Michigan's 2020 presidential election.
3/ They are parents and grandparents who are watching our children change because of gun violence, and they want something done. I started to see this after Oxford, it deepened with Uvalde, and now it’s ramped up even more after the shooting at MSU.
One year ago today, I saw my representative,
@RepMikeBishop
, celebrating in the Rose Garden after voting to repeal the ACA with no replacement, and without holding one town hall.
It was this day, one year ago exactly, that I decided to get in the race for
#MI08
.
While there’s still a lot of votes left to count, we’re feeling positive: we’ve been performing well all over the 7th District, and won the towns of Grand Ledge, DeWitt, Howell (by 13 votes!), and Brighton, all in Republican-leaning counties, and we’ve won Eaton County outright.
Welcome to Detroit,
@GabbyGiffords
! This morning we are talking about the ways gun violence impacts all of our communities — from urban to suburban to rural, and why we need action on this issue.
Ruby Garcia's murder is a horrible tragedy. But Donald Trump isn't coming to Michigan next week out of concern for her — he's coming to turn her death into a political performance for his own benefit. For all his talk about the border, Trump and his allies *blocked* a bipartisan…
Michigan made me who I am. There is nothing more important to me than this place. This is the place that taught me how to be a leader – and the place where my family achieved our version of the American dream.
I’m running for U.S. Senate to make sure every family across our…
I’ve been asked a lot this week, why do you want to run for Senate? For me, it’s all about service: After 9/11, I was recruited to the CIA & served three tours in Iraq alongside the U.S. military. I later served under Presidents Bush and Obama at the White House & then at the…
Donald Trump *just* got off the stage in Michigan. It was his 3rd time here in 8 months. He knows he can’t win the White House — and Republicans can’t flip the Senate — without winning Michigan.
I look forward to the Michigan Supreme Court taking up this case as quickly as possible. The 730,000+ Michiganders who added their signatures to this ballot proposal deserve to be heard. (1/2)
Breaking: Michigan board deadlocks on certifying abortion rights constitutional amendment for November ballot. 2-2 vote. The issue will go to the Michigan Supreme Court.
What happens in the days after a successful campaign? You close down the office and bid farewell in the short span of a week. Tonight Team Slotkin took a moment to celebrate. Hard work pays off!
Thank you
@jamie_raskin
for joining me in Ann Arbor this morning. You are not only a great colleague in the House, but you are a touchstone of integrity and leadership for everyone who knows you. I’m so grateful for your support, your friendship, and that you took the time to…
The solution to this standoff has always been clear: Senator Tuberville’s colleagues need to pressure him to end this. Let the 300+ generals and admirals be confirmed.
Last night I went on
@RealTimers
to talk about the issues we're focused on here in the Midwest: the cost of healthcare & prescription drugs, protecting people with pre-existing conditions –– and how to approach these issues pragmatically.
Watch more here:
Turns out, when you expand access to voting, as Michiganders approved in two ballot initiatives, more people — and especially more students — vote. MSU and UofM were some of the latest precincts to close in the last election, with dedicated students waiting in looong lines to…
It is time for this to end. Joe Biden won Michigan, and won it by 14 times Trump’s winning margin in 2016. No recount will overturn 146,00 votes. We need officials on both sides of the aisle to stop participating in attacks on democracy, and to start defending it.
Last year, Michigan had the highest youth voter turnout in the nation, and the results speak for themselves. I’m excited to partner with
@VotersTomorrow
as a Youth Vote Champion to help Gen Zers harness their political power and make a difference in our country.
“If we want to see real progress across the country, Democrats have to work hard to engage and mobilize young people, and that’s exactly what Voters of Tomorrow is doing. I’m excited to partner with them as a Youth Vote Champion.” –
@ElissaSlotkin
Imagine a world where the Senate could actually vote on gun violence prevention, voting rights, and protecting abortion and IVF.
All of those critical issues could get an up-or-down vote if we reformed the filibuster.
Stephen Hadley, former National Security Advisor for President Bush: “It is because of Slotkin's steadfast focus on the mission, of always putting country before party, that I am crossing political lines to support her.” Proud to have his support.

I’ve never taken corporate PAC money, and I’m not starting now. Our Senate campaign will therefore be powered by real people chipping in what they can – join us today:
Conversion therapy is a backwards, harmful practice that should be banned in every corner of the country. This step forward is long overdue & another example of Michigan putting our new Democratic majority to good use.
Congrats to

In 2018,
@MalloryMcMorrow
& I both took on Republican incumbents and won. We did it by showing up and making our case again and again — including knocking door after door in the wind and snow.
I’m grateful to have Mallory in my corner, especially now in my race to defend…
In our first debate last night, I needed to remind my opponent that he’s running against me and my record. I was standing right in front of him. And I don't take orders from anyone.

🚨Donald Trump is in Michigan tonight in an effort to energize the Republican base ahead of 2024.
This visit is an indication that Trump and the national GOP still very much view this as a swing state that they can win, and who controls the Senate could come down to what…
We have to decide as a country if we care about the number one killer of American children: gun violence. After the shootings at Oxford & MSU, I can feel the ground shifting on this issue. That’s why we’re making progress in the State Legislature & it’s why I won’t stop pushing…
Donald Trump may use words to be a supporter of working people, but his time in office shows through action that he doesn’t care for anything more than their votes.
His administration fought to limit workers’ rights to unionize. And when GM was on strike in 2019, he stood on…
Another step dangerously backward in America. Mifepristone is a safe, legal medication that’s been regularly used for more than two decades. This ruling from an activist judge is dramatically out of step with modern America, and shows an astonishing lack of concern for the health…
My mom was ahead of her time in so many ways. A force that taught me how to challenge myself, be independent, and to seek out opportunities. She was a trailblazer, coming out in 1986 and living the rest of her life as a gay woman long before that was the norm. And she’s also a…
We’re finishing the campaign the way we started: with a group of Republicans, Democrats & Independents. We all just want our government to work, and to be a proud representation of the country we love.

My mom was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer in 2009 – and she didn’t have health insurance. She had let it lapse and paid some other bills. For years, the insurance companies had gouged her because she happened to have a pre-existing condition.
Now that Michigan’s first citizen-led, independent redistricting process has officially concluded, I have decided that I will be seeking re-election to Congress in Michigan’s 7th congressional district. My full statement below ⬇️
This is the line at Brody Hall right now. You can register AND vote at the same time here! Today’s cut off was 4p, but those still in line will be able to cast their ballot. Tomorrow’s hours are 7a to 8p. You have the power to make a huge impact,

Another successful Snow Boots on the Ground event in Owosso! Thank you to everyone who came out despite the frigid temperatures. (My selfie skills also seem to be improving so my team actually let me post this one!)
Three years ago today I was sitting in my living room in Holly, Michigan watching live CNN coverage of a Rose Garden ceremony celebrating the repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Senator McCain would later go on to cast the deciding vote to kill the repeal.
JUST IN: Toyota today raised the wages for all its U.S. factory workers, I've confirmed for

Michiganders spoke loud and clear last month--they are sick of political parlor games and want their elected officials to get to work. Which is why the antics during the Michigan lame duck session both undermines the system and the will of the voters.
