Being a scientist means being an immigrant for many of us. We experience homesickness all the time, this year is unbearable. Let's hope we can all be reunited with our loved ones soon. This is from the last time I went home in summer. Such happy times! #AcademicChatter

One of the biggest lessons I have learned since I became a PI is that the best scientists are the ones who accept others' paths to happiness and success. I no longer value my colleagues based on numbers, but on how they got where they are and how generous they are with others.

Yet another paper doing something very similar to what we already did and published in 2021 and yet we are not cited. The field is so small, there are 4-5 papers that should be cited, not a big ask. Do reviewers carefully check authors are citing others? Sigh

Biggest critique of a reviewer in my proposal is that all the preliminary data is unpublished and therefore not peer reviewed. That's it. Do these people know the concept of prelim data? Why are they reviewers? 😭

Reviews are opinion pieces, they move the field forward by providing theoretical frameworks. I love reading and writing reviews. I think every scientist should do both research papers and reviews in a way that makes sense for their careers and also personal happiness

For experimental scientists, writing reviews does not equal doing science. Spend the time doing research, making discoveries, and publishing those. I see many CVs of juniorish PIs who write 4:1 reviews to papers. That may build your "brand" but, IMO, is not generally valuable

Biggest lesson learnt during these 5 years or so doing #neuroimmunology : Study anatomy, study anatomy, study anatomy and then plan experiments accordingly

Preprint question: is it ok to resubmit/update a preprint during the review process of the paper in a journal? Basically submit as a preprint the revised manuscript before it's resubmitted? Thank you, I really have no clue

Last day to apply for a postdoctoral position in my lab working on skin immunity in African lungfish. If you are looking for a supportive mentor, an amazing project where you will learn/use many cool techniques and with plenty of outreach opportunities in gorgeous NM, apply!

When I first opened my lab @unm I hired three outstanding undergrads. One of them just emailed me to tell me he just defended his PhD and he is moving to Scripps for his postdoc on B cells. Best email I could receive today. Go New Mexicans!! #NewPI #WomenInSTEM

Gate keepers in academia are one of my least favorite type of researchers. Never happy to see others succeed, always trying to put barriers on others progress. I will always be on the other side. Yours truly

The best scientists are the ones who always support their trainees to achieve their dreams and be happy. Nobody will care about CNS papers at your funeral. Just saying #WomenInSTEM
