Happy New Year dear friends. For my New Year’s resolution, I’ve decided to take a break from here for a while. Doing ok but just in need of some cognitive and emotional headspace. Wishing you all moments of peace and joy as we step into 2024.

Two years ago I was putting on scrubs ready for my first shift in a Covid Admissions Ward. I was eager to help however I could. Little did I know within five weeks I would become unwell, leading to a debilitating chronic illness which has no cure. 1/

The problem with medical education is that it is very dogmatic. Someone with influence and who is respected tells you something so it is true. Exams test factual knowledge, and groups of experts draw up guidelines and protocols, from which deviation is frowned upon. 1/

Thought I’d have a look in my old medical school textbook to see what was written on post-viral illness. This is the extent of what I could find, a tiny paragraph within the ‘medical psychiatry’ section. Published in 2006. Yikes. #LongCovid #MECFS

@GeoEduOne Peanut butter is super high in histamine. Sorry you had such an unpleasant experience. Here’s a useful table to help identify potential high histamine foods.

Modern medicine has a significant problem psychologising severe physical post-viral illness. We have to learn and move forward, but it feels like we are stuck in the Victorian era diagnosing hysteria over and over.

Another day, another conversation with a parent of a 10yr old child with #LongCovid . Prev healthy, horrendously sick. From clinical picture; PIMS, POTS, gastroparesis, encephalopathy, pericarditis - she’s been checked for none of these, but has seen a psychiatrist #LongCovidKids

Musical progress! Slowly slowly slowly finding my way back, one bar at a time. In the last week I’ve managed to bring both hands together! Amazed that my brain is slowly improving, as long as I don’t challenge it too fast. Bringing me a lot of joy. #LongCovid #NeuroRehab #Bach

Musicians with #LongCovid ! After many months of not even being able to listen to music due to sensory overload, I am starting to try to practice piano and sing again. I’m finding reading music brings on brain fog and headaches quite rapidly. Any tips? #Neurorehab

So what happens when a new disease comes along that defies these rules, whose pathophysiology is wholly different from illnesses that came before? 2/

Medical friends, today is #LongCovidAwarenessDay . For your PDP this week, please consider reading this excellent review paper which outlines the current understanding of the pathophysiology of #LongCovid . It is the defining illness of our generation. #MedTwitter

This is the standard mask that NHS staff are provided with. In Scotland you can now request higher grade PPE as per Scottish Government guidelines. Speak to your line manager who can help. You do not want this virus. Believe me. Sick 27 months now with Long Covid.

1. Qualitative fit test report on a surgical mask. Outcome: abject failure. The test failed within 5 seconds of a 7-minute OSHA fit test protocol (3M FT-10). In fact, it failed faster than I could start the timer. A record
