If you are posting about how you are thinking about Children’s Mercy today, this is my message and request:
We routinely see kids shot in the peds ED. It’s the
#1
killer of children.
Show us you care at EVERY. SINGLE. ELECTION.
No body count is too high for the GOP.
I am a pediatrician.
Trans kids exist. We cannot legislate their identity away. Some people may not like that. That does not make it not true.
What we can do is support their happiness and mental health. For many, this simply means leaving them alone rather than targeting them.
COVID can be stopped with everyone wearing a mask and all buildings having excellent ventilation.
Monkeypox can be stopped with everyone wearing a hazmat suit and never touching anything again.
I am sure this will go fine based off how well the mask/ventilation stuff went.
@RubinReport
I have cared for kids admitted to the ICU, permanently disabled, and killed by vaccine-preventable illnesses. 100% of their parents regret not vaccinating. This is the difference between reality (what I do) and opinion (what you do).
After testing positive with “mild” COVID,
@CDCDirector
was off work for *18 DAYS*.
She thinks you can also choose to take 3 weeks off work if you want to or need to. Can you?
Thank you to my family and CDC staff for support while I recovered from COVID-19. I am fortunate to have only had mild symptoms, which I credit to being up to date on my
#COVID19
vaccines.
Please don't listen to
@WSJ
and
@WSJeditor
. They are not doctors and have no idea what they are talking about. I am both a practicing physician and a tenured professor with a well-established career in medical education.
A thread.

@petersm_th
Wow. This is a really bad take from someone without a MD or a PhD. I have both. Both people should be called doctor.
Many PhDs are fighting this pandemic as much as the MDs with their work.
Only MDs should be called physicians if you are looking for a discriminating term.
@Southwest_Texan
@bschapiroMD
@NRA
MD job = prevent injury/death. Helmet manufacturers tell people to use helmets. Do they always? No. Car manufacturers tell people to use seatbelts. Do they always? No. Gun manufacturers tell people safe gun practices. Do they always heed advice? No. MD job = counsel on all this.
Vaccines have been given to 5-11 for about 24 hours now. As expected, their reactions to getting the shot reflect their understanding of how they can be stronger leaders than many adults. They are overjoyed, proud, and overcome with emotion.
These little leaders are our future.
.
@WSJ
@WSJopinion
- Please leave the medicine and the medical education to those of us that know what we are doing.
Your senseless drivel about making medical care worse and advancing missed diagnoses is not helpful to anyone.
7/end
Many physicians to their employers: “I am overwhelmed. The workload is unreasonable and not achievable.”
Employers: “Have you thought about working full time and getting paid part time? What about our wellness course that starts at 5PM?”
We have a problem. It’s not doctors.
Medicine has a problem with writing off the complaints of Black people. This leads patients to suffer missed diagnoses and die. This is even worse if you are a Black woman.

It’s thank a resident day!!
Hospital CEOs - Today is a great day to raise resident salaries to six figures!
@POTUS
- Today is a great day to wipe out loans as a thank you for working in the pandemic!
I could keep going with countless examples of bad care at the hands of unacceptable racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, etc that physicians of older generations embrace and celebrate.
All of that leads to bad care. All of it is unacceptable.

@kaitlancollins
Let me translate:
You should take a test on day 5 but we don’t have enough tests…with no plan to get sufficient testing available…two years into this pandemic
@WSJ
@WSJopinion
- this is what you appropriately called intersectionality but then dismissed as not important.
But, the problem is that dismissing this leads to missed diagnoses and death that you agreed is not OK.

Full. Professor. With. Tenure.
Thank you to everyone I have collaborated with and who has served as a mentor, sponsor, or advisor. This is not possible without a village around me.
(1/3) It was an amazing first vaccine clinic for the 5 to 11 age group at our main campus! More than 450 kids got their first shot of the Pfizer vaccine, and you can see the excitement in the faces of the parents and children in the video.

@WSJ
@WSJopinion
want you to believe that physicians should not understand the social contexts that drive good care. They are concerned that focusing on these things will mean a physician will see a WBC of 60K with blasts on smear will not know what that means.

@WSJ
@WSJopinion
- I will help you out because I know you are not physicians - That means cancer. You do not need to be a physician to know that. This is the easy stuff to teach in medicine.
This is the harder stuff to teach:

A 6-figure salary is about $25/hr
These people make about $25/hr:
- The surg tech that hands the instruments to the resident operating on the pt
- School bus drivers
- HVAC repair professionals
- Tile setter
Do residents have less ed, skill, or job risk than these?
@MdBreathe
I was going to alert your certifying board for spreading misinformation, but it looks like you are not board certified and looking to cash in on COVID. Please leave kids out of your tweets. They deserve better than your attacks on their right to be safe, happy, and healthy.
@washingtonpost
Just so we are very clear - teachers assaulting children is a criminal act, and parents who willingly let their children be abused can also be charged with child abuse. So, I am thinking this will not last for long.
@Esqueer_
@m_scribe
None of this is remotely new. Threatening physicians, including death threats, has been on the rise for several years. Most hospitals do not speak out about it. That’s what is different. Most hospitals just get the police to deal with protection for their physicians.
@piper4missouri
Doctor here. It still will not. The result of this law is preventing girls from sports. It is not forced genital inspection. Doctors will obviously not do these exams. Don't let republicans get a 2 for 1 here - prevent girls from sports and further erode trust in doctors.
@TPP_MD
🤣🤣
No offense, but this is me:
“Nice to meet you, Dr. Turner. I am glad you will be my anesthesiologist today. I am sure you a great, but I want spinal anesthesia for my leg surgery bc we just met and I know too much. Who cares about the surgeon, my life is in your hands.”
“With universal masking, in-person education was associated with low rates of secondary transmission, even with less stringent distancing”
These are trustworthy authors.
Let this sink in:
SCOTUS is seriously debating whether you have a legal right to have your life saved when you show up dying to the ED. They think you may not. This is why lawyers should not play doctor.
I am so glad to see the
@UrgencyofEquity
toolkit come out today. We need to be following science, advancing science, putting kids first, and keeping kids safe and healthy. This toolkit does all of that.
I would push thinking in a few areas...

@jobusar

@drjohnm

If advocacy should only be done on time as a private citizen would you please remove all mention of being a physician from your twitter account? Also, as a pediatrician, advocacy is my lane because kids cannot advocate for themselves. It literally saves lives.
🚨🚨🚨PARENTS 🚨🚨🚨
You were promised we could peel mitigation off after vaccines.
This is true, but vaccines sitting on shelves will not get us there.
The fully vaxxed rate for 5-11 is 18%. 🤮
If you want promises delivered, tell everyone you know to get vax and vax kids.
Who should we be listening to about COVID, kids, and schools?
We should trust the trustworthy and not trust the untrustworthy. Trust should be deliberately given to qualified people.
This is my research area.
A short thread.

@VenkBellamkonda
@jbullockruns
I am pretty sure
@jbullockruns
is referencing letting a trainee with a disability go bc it was not in their best health interests to do nights. So, the fair solution to those of us that strive for equity and fairness (and following the law) is to make reasonable accommodations.
I cannot get past what a masterclass in leadership this is.
She talks about good leaders knowing when they should step aside and let a new leader take over. This is incredibly uncommon in my experience. Medicine is filled with leaders overstaying their time and effectiveness.
@tarahaelle
@WikiDocJames
COVID transmission is extremely low to nonexistent at schools employing mitigation measures. Many are not, though. That’s the problem. School experiences are wildly discrepant and have been the whole pandemic.
@acweyand
Come back early? You can even work through it. I really hope hospitals have more sense than this. Can you imagine caring for a peds onc patient when you have COVID or me caring for a newborn when I have COVID? Our patients deserve much better than us infecting them.
The US government has purchased enough COVID vaccine doses to vaccinate every kid 5-11.
This is leadership!
Now, the next leadership decision falls to parents. Don’t throw away your kids’ shot for a normal childhood.
@georgetolisjr
Are you aiming to be fired at this point or only harming the ability to attract talent to your institution?
You are making things worse.
@bekahowell
Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician here. I routinely care for abused children and children with accidental drug ingestion. I can definitely reassure parents that your ideas are not based in reality. Please consider advocating for kids rather than scaring parents.

Ah, the gold old days when cough syrup had alcohol, cannabis, chloroform, and morphine. It not only fixed your cough but also pickled your insides, gave you your appetite back, and made falling down the stairs after taking it pain-free. 😂😂 We’ve come a long way...
@jrusso691
@RubinReport
No vaccine does that when circulating cases are high. COVID is definitely vaccine-preventable and breakthrough cases currently much, much lower than unvaccinated cases. Vaccines also prevent morbidity and not just mortality and COVID vaccines doing that very well in breakthroughs
I just cannot get over this picture from
@EBMAorg

. Do we need theory? Yes, absolutely. Do we need more focus on practical implementation that matters for patients? Yes, absolutely.
Dear Physicians on Twitter,
You do not need

This is not a popularity contest. You are a doctor, not a pop star.

My next poll will be asking residents how often they violate the 80hr work week limit and do not report it.

Isn’t it fantastic?!? There are only 5 of those I have not cared for on sick inpatient kids. We need these vaccines so badly to keep kids safe, healthy, and alive.
It is an amazing week to work at the best children’s hospital in the US!! First, 5-11 vaccine demand through the roof. Next, new incredible critical care building. Now, this: 🤩😍🤩
We have an incredible opportunity to study the outcomes of students admitted to med school without an MCAT score in the equation this year. Please someone do this study and please, deans, don’t use the MCAT this year and join this study!

Lots of omicron talk.
The time to get vaccinated was early 2021 for most.
The time to wear masks was March 2020. It never stopped.
Omicron changes neither of these truths we have known for 1-2 years now.

In one sense, I love this. In another sense, this worries me a lot. Should matching in the program you want mean getting up at 3:30am to attend lectures as a way to show interest?
@lululemon
@wildingpaulaa
I looked up who qualifies. It says “nurses, doctors, and support personnel.” What exactly is support personnel and why the focus on doctors and nurses at the exclusion of others? Also, flight attendants are not the same as a paramedic. 🤦♂️
@madweber023
It will not accomplish anything for them. Legal precedent is strong. They can get vax, quit, or be fired. This is America. They are free to make whichever choice they want. No one can force them to stay or get vax. They cannot force someone to employ them either.
Thank you again

If you have COVID and wear a non-fit tested N95 and I wear the same, we are safe for 25 hours. 🤯
If we both wear a fit-tested N95, we are safe for 2500 hours. 🤯🤯🤯
All HCWs should be in fit-tested N95s right now if caring for COVID patients.
@KrugAlli
You did not help. You made the job of pediatricians advocating for the health of all children harder at a time when people do not trust us as much as they did just a few years ago. Your tweets will be used to make poor decisions that will have deleterious consequences for kids.

Number 2! 🥳
I will be celebrating by wearing and mask and staying home for months.
This vaccine is a free pass for nothing until everyone reading this has 2 shots and cases are exceedingly low. Please get your vaccine so this is not 2022 or 2023.
