I was once on a hiring committee that ended with a junior hire of a perfectly fine white woman, who's since had a perfectly fine career. One of the nonwhite applicants, who the committee did not see as having the same potential, just won a MacArthur fellowship.

He was 31 when “Ain’t No Sunshine” came out. It had no hook. He could barely play guitar. He was a lifelong stutterer. From West Virginia. The most perfect song ever made. Then he took the money, decided it was enough, and sat down and enjoyed his family. For 30 YEARS.

Affirmative action 🧵: Yesterday I had to look up my endocrinologist’s office info to get a referral. I happened upon the fact that she graduated Columbia 5 years after I did. Which meant I was part of the team that admitted her, a team that regularly acted affirmatively.

Black women make up less than 3% of all doctors. The ones in the field, save lives, ESPECIALLY those of other Black women. So it makes sense, if we care about Black lives, to employ and protect methods that ensure more Black doctors. If. We. Care. About. Black. Lives.

The cardiologist is quickly able to diagnose me with familial hypercholesterolemia. Very easy to treat, a pill a day with zero side effects. But it’s one of those diseases that if untreated, healthy people can drop dead of a heart attack before age 50.

I specifically chose her as my doctor because she is a Black woman. Race was a primary factor, but she’s also a terrific physician. Last year, she’s looking through my most recent testing and asks me why my cholesterol is going up. I repeated what my (white, male) PCP told me:

It’s typical for patients like me whose “lifestyle catches up with them as they get older.” She says that we just talked (kiki’d actually) about my lifestyle, which is very active and overall mostly healthy. *SHE BELIEVES ME* and recommends I go see a cardiologist.

A really nice story about these two is when they were struggling actors in New York, they’d sometimes split a theater ticket- one would leave at intermission and the other would slip in for the second act, then they’d meet up after and piece the story and performances together.

I wanted an American Girl doll (specifically Josefina) so bad when I was little. My mom had to take me aside and explain we couldn’t afford it, and I needed to let it go, I wouldn’t get one. I got to help accession a Josefina doll last week, and it was a cool moment.

I CAN'T RECOMMEND learning to embrace audiobooks enough. I'm easily getting through SO many more books, and my life is starting to feel like when I was a reading-ass little kid, that I'm a girl living in a swirl of characters and stories. Public libraries stay undefeated, man.

I always keep track of jobs in the museum field, because I *love* getting good people good jobs. But I was just looking through some recent postings, and I'm so scandalized by these salaries. Jobs that require an advanced degree that pay less than $60k should be ILLEGAL.

There are many, many examples, obviously, but in my experience, the murder of Fred Hampton and the MOVE bombings/murders are two of the events that are nearly never taught in schools and have the most potential to change EVERYTHING students think about this country's history.

New York, listen closely: GO SEE THIS EXHIBITION BEFORE IT CLOSES. It’s an incredibly thoughtful and informative look at the history of abolition in Brooklyn, the people who KNEW slavery was wrong, and fought like hell to end it. I’ve visited in awe many times, don’t miss it!

The new (and yes, improved!) Mid-Manhattan Library is a joy. Any person can walk in, enjoy the view, play on their phone, pick up a magazine, borrow or flip through a book. There’s a fantastic teen center with a recording studio. Libraries reveal THE BEST OF US.
