I'd like non-diabetic folk to know that diabetes is 24/7. We feel it and see it almost constantly. It's in the fridge, cupboards, diaries, apps, appointments. It's in our bags, pockets, scars & complications.
It's never your joke.
#DiabetesAwarenessMonth
BTW; Insulin pumps are not a luxury item, not a fashion accessory, not something for "lazy" Diabetics.
They're a disability aid. I will die on this hill.
If you're watching
#MasterChef
, then please know that Type 1 Diabetics can eat chocolate, sugar, cake, anything - allergies and intolerances aside.
Those who don't eat those things follow their own diet choices.

Very Diabetic Problems.
Consultant: So, how is everything?
Diabetic: Fine, really. No problems.
Translation: I haven't slept since 1994, my CGM graph looks like a hedgehog's back, breathing gives me a hypo and my skin is covered in adhesive which flamethrowers can't remove.
@BBCBreaking
Horrendous. And while she spends the rest of her life in prison, management should be investigated over how this was allowed to happen after consultants raised concerns.

A repost of this one from…
Type 1 diabetes isn't preventable or caused by eating too much sugar. It's an autoimmune condition where the body attacks its insulin-producing cells. Beyond that, nobody asks for any type of diabetes and absolutely nobody "Looks diabetic".
Thanks for coming to my Dad Talk.
A thing which I would love non-diabetic folk to understand; The frequent necessity to "calculate" and consider the "what if..." despite doing very normal activities. Their brains don't need to think like ours and carry the exhaustion that follows.

Very Diabetic Problems no.2
Dr: What caused that high, 5 months ago?
Diabetic: Ah, yes I remember it well. I'd carb counted my 37 chips and homemade steak pie and homemade apple pie with a pint of custard to within 1g. But! Mis-timed my bolus by 45 seconds. I'll try harder.
I've had T1D for almost 37 years. For some of that time I've had eye complications related to my Diabetes.
I'm just putting that out there because:
No shame
It happens
I'm no less of a Diabetic
I'm no less of a person

Another thing which I would like non-diabetic folk to understand; Hypos. They're not our fault, we're only (super)human and we need whatever time we need to recover - hypos can be very different from person to person.

Diabetes Translations.
I had a great night of sleep.
(I slept for 2 hours in between hypos, hypers and alarms)
It's eye screening day.
(It's the brightest day since records began)
I don't carb count, I can accurately estimate carbs in a meal.

I'd like non-diabetic folk to know that when I'm hypo, you don't need to ask or know why. Bring glucose, we can talk later when I'm done fighting to stay conscious.
I don't know if people who don't have T1D have noticed but, just to clarify, most people who have Type 1 Diabetes are not 20-something models or elite sportspeople. Just in case you somehow had that impression! 🤷♂️
@Joey7Barton
As a Type 1 Diabetic, those sugary foods are often essential for me to avoid hypoglycaemia. Most (maybe all) of the 400k T1Ds in the UK will experience hypos frequently - although we try to avoid them. Are we going to be exempt from this tax in Bartonland?
Medical exemption certificate renewal for

makes no sense. A certificate for life, fine. Stop this needlessly adding to our burden. It doesn't go away after a few years.
I feel like we've been here before.

Imagine the newly diagnosed T1, thinking 'Diet and exercise! No insulin! Cool, I'll try that'
4 days later they're dead.
But it's alright. fReEdom oF SpeEch!
Get your house in order, Twitter.
37units of Novorapid today. That should cover 370g of carbs. I've probably eaten 120g.
If anybody tells you T1D is just carbs and insulin then please laugh loudly.
Here's a thing T1Ds, do we all neglect our condition sometimes? Actively deciding to do or not do something which could impact negatively upon T1D, simply because we need a break and we're mentally exhausted. Not burn out. Not a full sleep. A nap from the work

What's the worst thing a HCP has ever said to you in regards to T1D?
I'll go first
"I think I should take you on a tour of the amputations ward then maybe you'll start looking after yourself"
I was 12.
My diet choices including carbohydrates (or not) are my own. Just as yours are yours. I don't need unsolicited advice or passive-aggressive "concern".
I read many tweets which I don't agree with but I'm not the tweet police and neither are you.
Breathe. Coffee.
I've had "the call" 😁
My pump funding is now confirmed. It was expected but it's great to have the confirmation from UHL. I'll be setting up later, prob Sept.
You know when reality TV folk describe a few weeks as "a journey"? This has been a journey.
I realise that Billy already has a fanclub without even trying. As his agent, I'm allowed to tweet another photo. He'll see you all again in a couple of weeks.

I have sugar in my coffee. I eat junk, fruit, bread, pastry, chocolate, veg, sweets and anything I fancy. Any-fucking-thing. I enjoy the occasional beer. So can you. Don't be guilted or fearmongered into any diet. Goodnight.
I see that I can't falsify my Libre numbers, for clinic. Life was much easier with a fiction-laden blood glucose diary, written the night before my appointment.
Rather than talk down ableist pieces of shit, I'll do the talking up thing.
If you're having a hypo and you're ANYWHERE then treat it until you feel better. I don't care if you're at the ballet or a funeral. Your health is important.
Something else I'd like non-diabetic folk to know:
Technology is not a cure. A pump doesn't replace the job of a pancreas and nor does hybrid closed loop (not an artificial pancreas).

I have a lot to say, obviously. What a wonderful consultation. I felt the focus was 100% on my wellbeing and with my history, life events and future considered alongside data evidence. I'm being put forward for pump funding.
It. Can. Be. Done.
Oh, A1c 6.7%
That was a brutal hypo. I am fully hypo twatted. Strange, how some lows can ruin you for hours while others are more gentle. Perhaps it was the rapid drop.
Never let anybody tell you that T1D is just insulin and carb counting.
Not today, Reaper.
RE: My estimated A1c earlier. I make no apologies for tweeting that or any screenshots in relation to my T1D. I don't consider myself to be a perfect diabetic. That doesn't exist. But! I will celebrate little victories as I believe we all should while managing T1D.

I'd like non-diabetic folk to know that Type 1 Diabetics can never "come off insulin". That would eventually result in Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and, without treatment, death.
Insulin to stop blood glucose going dangerously HIGH.
Glucose, absolutely not insulin, to stop blood glucose going dangerously LOW.
Thanks for coming to my Sesame Street Talk.
Your diabetes is yours.
Please do not feel pressured by Twitter users over how you refer to your condition, how you should manage it, info you share, how you feel about it or any related complications.
Thanks for coming to my DAD talk.
I feel like sharing some numbers after 30 days pumping:
240 injections avoided
87% TIR
2% over 13mmol/l
0.2% reduction in eA1c
2 boluses for meals in public
Several 10hr sleeps
0 dawn phenomenon
QoL improvement immeasurable
One of the hardest things about chronic illness is not always the pain, discomfort or debilitating consequences. It is making those closest to you understand and gaining their support.

"Why are you low?"
Don't ask. Just don't. Do the helpful stuff and when we're feeling better we can work on the precise reasons.
That's all I have to say. I've had T1D since 1984 and many hypo stories, as do others. Read them. Ask Qs but not when we're hypo.
It's
#HypoAwarenessWeek
and many of you will be aware enough. Others, hypoglycaemia is very serious. It can be and has been fatal for diabetics. Help by offering sugary drinks (full sugar coke, lucozade, etc) and sweets. Help further by never judging. Thanks.

Good morning. My father in law passed away, last night. I knew him to be a very kind and super intelligent man. He was always good to me. Alzheimer's took his mind and eventually his body. I hope the universe returned them and he's telling awful dad jokes somewhere 💔
My current TIR is 33%
Once upon a time, that was concerning. I'd panic and go into micro manage mode.
It's just one day. A grain of sand on the beach of T1D life.
It's been 36 years to the day since my diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes. I don't have a Diaversary because today is my birthday and that takes precedent.
And you're all very kind for the birthday messages. This old git feels very spoilt.
If I say that I'm "hypo" or "low" then this is in reference to my blood glucose. I may be confused, agitated, sweaty or just acting strangely. Give me lots of sugary drinks and food. If I'm unconscious or fitting then get me an ambulance

If you're worried about blood glucose spikes after a meal, please don't. It's a normal thing. Here is a graph from a friend of mine who doesn't have diabetes. The spike was following a Chinese take away.

Diabetes is a disability. I remember this debate from 2017 when I created this account. It seems to be a hot topic again.
If you consider yourself disabled or not, because of diabetes is totally your choice. It's not a dirty word.
Finally, this

If you don't have Diabetes and happen to stumble upon

then I encourage you to read through what you can, especially from Diabetics! because we are the people living it 24/7 and your understanding of just the very basics would be great.
A schoolboy error confession; I manually bolused for some chocolate, 1.5u.
Only, I didn't tap the . part
I've changed my max bolus, after 120g of sweets, 35g drink and 15g hypo gel. Because I clearly cannot be trusted.
I did bad diabeticing tonight.
How difficult it must be to have

Fear did NOT make me engage with my T1D. The offer of a tour of the amputations ward didn't make me a "better" diabetic. Potential sight loss didn't make me attend retinal screening.
If you've read that crap from Dr Boulton and the IDF then ignore it. It is outdated bullshit.
Someone else's HbA1c of 50mmol/mol or 150mmol/mol or anything above, below or in-between, is not a reflection of how well you're doing with your own diabetes.
Different boats, different seas, different storms.
Last night was a triumph, I was magnificent. 10hrs of sleep and entirely in range throughout. I still got it.
This is bragging, over 40, as a diabetic.
I haven't drunk any Diet Coke for a week. That's probably the longest time without in 35 years. Changes?
I'm sleeping easily, within a few mins of getting into bed.
More visits to the loo.
That's it. I'm hoping my organs are happy for the change... except you, pancreas, prick.
If you have Type 1 Diabetes then you've been living by a strict set of rules to stay alive since diagnosis.
A month?
You'll be alright. Do the right things, Diabadasses.
