My first 2/3 years were spent “farmed out” to a white family while my dad was studying - it happened to a lot of Nigerians until safeguarding stopped it in 2005. #channel5 are showing it this week. #Ritzycinema

The worst thing to ever happen to me on my care journey was when they sent me to live independently aged 15 & still at school. The ramifications of that period for me were life long. Criminal record and custody followed. It didn’t have to be that way.

NEW: 41% of older children in care in England now live in care-less accommodation. When we were in the High Court in 2022, government (backed by care review's interim report) stressed that 'some' children in care aged 16 & 17 are 'ready for independence'. *41% is not some*

Because I (understandably) created a fantasy family as an abandoned child, I was labelled a liar by social workers. They would have done better if they had spent time learning more about why rather than labelling me. I know me and I don’t find it easy to lie now or then.

Shouldn’t we just be honest & say “we can not protect young people in the care system” ? Too much money to be made, too many corners cut, too much abuse (that has been associated to unloved children for too long) too many politicians in denial. As much suffering today as the 80’s

When young people in care express doubts about the “service” - behind all of them is “care” - if we cared for them then their outcomes would be so much better. Some jobs require you to love your “clients” and want the very best for them. Kick down doors for them. Really care more
