“…while I have more than three Eikon abilities to play with, I’m sticking with the abilities I’ve been using for the past 20-some hours.”

>say you can’t customise playstyle
Classic.
Ironically, the RPG-ification of action games means genre staples like God of War and Ghost of Tsushima offer more opportunities for tailoring the combat to a specific playstyle than Final Fantasy 16.
Is Suramar the best questline in WoW's history?
It was Peak Adventure: You aid a rebellion, establish a base, upgrade it & help your new friends grow, ultimately striking back.
And the arcan'dor, a symbol of magic and life as one? Absolute 10/10 Warcraft elf vibes.
Whoever made this sword needs a raise.
Ashkandi, the other version, was Lothar's sword, so it means the Brotherhood of the Horse.
Their 'fall' was in the First War, when Orgrim got intel of a secret training camp.
So, we now know Deathwing caused their fall and kept this trophy!
World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, huh?
The only leaks literally called "Dragonflight" mentions 4 new classes and player housing...
April 19th is going to be interesting, if nothing else.
Gaming has been co-opted by gambling. It started in mobile, outright using 'gaming' as a smokescreen to avoid regulation.
Look at the prevalence of gambling on Twitch! It's all the same neurocircuitry being abused, intentionally, to hijack you and your money.
We've compiled the best Talent Tree Builds for every class in the Dragonflight Pre-Patch which should allow you to easily import these builds into the game!

Fuck this, fuck whoever pushed this through, and fuck the entire culture of paid cosmetics.
If they actually sell tenders the entire Trading Post will be poisoned and turned into a second shop - wasn’t one enough in a sub MMO?
I might be coming at this from a cynical angle, but...
I don't mind cosmetic monetisation, but I feel like in 'the good timeline' the coloured dragon wings, an S-tier transmog item, wouldn't be locked in an $80 bundle of a box price game that also has a sub.
Great interview, we got answers that feel way more candid than I expected.
The new UI trying to copy the buff-tracking parts of WeakAuras, addons genuinely being a problem for them, more PTR encryption & a desire to make loot feel closer to master loot.
Fantastic.
TWW feels like Blizzard finding an old to-do list in a drawer and just doing every item on it all at once

Producer & Director Naoki Yoshida on the ongoing congestion, additional game time compensation, suspension of sales, error codes, and our upcoming plans.
I think it's less about *understanding* what's in-game and more about *feeling* it.
As an example, Anduin's struggles with the weight of being King from Shadows Rising aren't in game. Instead, we spend hours learning about Covenant side-characters.
Focus on the important stuff.
In an interview with Millenium, Ion Hazzikostas spoke a little about WoW's storytelling, and how they've changed their approach to make sure the most important story moments can always be experienced directly in the game.

The way this cine sold him was great. Fleshed out and real.
He's someone who's emotionally tortured, has that trauma holding him back and impacting one thought process specifically - that he isn't worthy of light - but he's still logically sound and rational.
A good start.
Okay so im on record as an Anduin hater
But thats purely his post ingame MoP characterisation.
This somewhat broken and beaten down man? It's giving me "Shadows Rising Anduin struggling with the world" and I LOVED that actual human being.
This. This I can get around!!

I am simply a messenger. If anyone was saved, it’s because they had the courage to open their eyes and see the truth for themselves.
In case you were wondering why* there's so much stuff on the Trading Post this month, and why it's all so expensive, and why those class sets are on it - here's the answer!
They're monetising Tenders now.
*Note: That might not be the reason, but we get to assume the worst now!
200 Trader's Tender is available in the newest shop bundle!
The Corsage Pack costs $5.00 USD and gives 200 Trader's Tender and 2 Wrist Accessories.

I really hope they reconsider the implementation of the Great Vault for 10.0.
I've been doing some research into player motivation 👀 and I think this "work all week to get a reward that's statistically likely to be a bad experience" system is ultimately harmful.
Tier Sets have started to drop from the Great Vault on the 9.2 PTR and we've opened 200 Great Vaults to estimate the Drop Chance of tier pieces showing up in the Great Vault!

I think after Shadowlands, Blizzard looked up at the mountain of technical issues they've avoided for years, realised it's climb or die, and we've been watching them make steady progress on all fronts.
For every criticism I still have, the respect will always be there.
They raise fine points, and you can argue that letting players stay in their comfort zone is bad, but like… The moving parts are few but meaningful. You can reset your abilities and try drastically new playstyles at any time, and accessories make or break optimising them.
Now imagine a world where you get a sword in the overworld that give you +10% damage while Ramuh is active.
I guarantee you people would whine about being ‘forced’ to play a playstyle they don’t like.
No one bothers to think WHY the devs made this choice.
Seriously, do side quests. The quest team have been cracked this expansion, adding introspective conversations that make you think about your character, your actions and the world around you.
The optional dialogue is 10/10, and really makes you pause for thought.
I can almost smell the confidence dripping from this roadmap. Just a skull and crossbones to tease 10.2.6?
Timerunning: Pandamonium? Harbinger story before 11.0? Draenei getting heritage armour? Late Summer TWW?
Show me this a year ago and I'd have laughed you out of the room.
The Worldsoul Saga begins in 2024!
Our cadence continues in the year ahead with six content updates plus the new expansion, The War Within.

Everything that costs Orbs is designed to be just short of how many orbs you can buy.
Legendary Gem whaling can get you up to 450% bonus life & damage when F2P are limited to a few a month.
0.05% chance for a 5 star gem, with a pity after over $100 worth of rolls.
Just a taste.
@BellularGaming
He'd have made some really good points if literally anything he said was based in objective reality. Unfortunate.
Scared devs? In the expansion they revamped gearing entirely, added Dragonriding and made the game's first ever support spec?
rrats are universal lmao
Problem: Necessary element of your game isn't fun.
"Ugh, I have to fly over there..."
Solution 1: Remove it, or reduce its impact.
"I can just teleport."
Solution 2: Make it fun.
"Yay, I get to fly over there!"
Dragonriding is them trying solution 2 for a change, which OWNS.
But you know me. I pretty much hate it when efficiency & convenience streamline the texture out of games.
Big difference between that and more artificial feeling friction that's meant to parricidally prop up content / pace reward in a way that feels punitive.
@BellularGaming
If I wanted to write a comprehensive list of ways games manipulate players into spending money, I could almost do it using Diablo Immortal alone.
Every single trick in the book that would fit, they jammed in there.

Given the metaphysics of the Shadowlands, we can assume a powerful being can alter its own form, as shown with his post-Sigil metamorphosis.
Therefore, we must assume he gave himself nipples.
Why? To rub tauntingly in our direction upon his victory, probably.
@BellularGaming
We’ve had stories of the wolf in sheep’s clothing for millennia for a damn good reason. Somehow it feels more important than ever before, culturally and socially.
Imagine watching this and having anything to say about how it looks other than "hell yeah!".
It's a miracle we can even get a game like Armored Core, and attitudes like this are the REASON they're so fucking rare. Chasing photorealism years ago nearly killed Japanese games.
The fact they clearly don't care about timing here suggests, to me at least, the players who might care about the headlines are barely an afterthought.
I guess they want to hit the overlap of people logging in for Timewalking prep & Season of Mastery.
>10.2.6 in March

I absolutely adore the energy the WoW teams are bringing!

Seeing (almost) only actual human chat in /2 is actually unreal, like I've been transported to a past I wasn't sure even existed.

I made a whole video about how bad the shapeshifting GCDs are going to feel for Druid of the Claw, and you fixed it with something so simple and cool. This is gonna be so fun.
So, research supports that feeling compulsion to play makes you unhappy, which makes you worse for new players.
That's some nice evidence to suggest coercive/'forced' gameplay is bad for the long-term health for your game.

And when you're unhappy, you're more prone to being an asshole, which explains 80% of dungeon experiences. Alternatively, parallel to that, if you play because you feel you have to, then you run dungeons and content because you have to, so it gets irritating when you have any --
@Thdlock
A time-based barrier to entry filters out the less-dedicated, not the bad - time invested does not translate to skill in WoW. You’re conflating ability with willingness to grind, both Legion and BFA had dogshit players who felt entitled to kills because they put the time in.
The best game WoW could learn from story-wise is Elden Ring. More than once in conversation I’ve compared the sheer feeling of wonder to vanilla WoW. Both feel more like worlds and series of adventures than video games.
Working on a video about the lessons WoW could learn from XIV.
Tad spicy, but isn't a takedown, isn't just saying 'lmao just make wow a FF game with a 1 decade long story'.
WoW shouldn't emulate MSQ. But there ARE lessons that'd unlock it’s unique potential as a Warcraft MMO
As the Microsoft-Activision deal closes, Bobby Kotick says he'll stay on as CEO through the end of the year. On January 1, 2024, Kotick will depart the company he took over 33 years ago — a massive change for the video game industry
I try so very hard to follow the plot and themes of this story, and I try to give you the benefit of the doubt, and I can follow what goes on the writer's room very clearly, but you NEVER put that in the actual game in a compelling way.
Reconciliation is great. Moving away from the Titans is great. The Oathstones as red herring could be cool.
But we need characters to contemplate in front of us. We need to see how and WHY their minds change instead of getting it from the most soulless dialogue ever put to paper
Working on a little thing, and I need some help.
What's your favourite heroic moment in Warcraft?
Which character did something so inspiring, big or small, that it stuck with you?
For me, the first was Thrall helping Cairne save his tribe in War3. That's true bro stuff.
Esports betting, Overwatch lootboxes, crypto gambling, literal IRL casinos, gachapon machines - they're all the same in principle.
That's how we got here. It's exploitation all the way down, but before D:I, Blizzard pretended to care about you.
...Even the effect is a reference. Double damage against Humanoids.
10/10 flavour for an item, adding to some world-building and calling back to Warcraft 1 events.
I genuinely have a new appreciation for FFXIV raid writing after this.
Hesperos is WAY more than FFXIV!Dracula, and Erichthonios' name alone tells us so, so much.
This is the danger - I feel even myself going this way. The senseless skipping over context and rapid turns in direction are driving me to apathy. Why read a book if it's missing the middle, and the start and end feel barely connected?
I hope their new commitment fixes this.
@Matlagan
I tried for years. I speculated and rationalized the decisions made by the characters, I tried to figure out where things would go.
I don't do that anymore. There's no point. They can't write - or they aren't allowed to, and I don't know which is worse.
Delaying so close to the wire is *brutal* but I trust it’s necessary. Better late than a bad experience. RIP to player plans though, that part always blows.
@JoshStrifeHayes
Watch some fight scenes from Demon Slayer on Youtube, spend half an hour reading Jojo memes, call Attack on Titan 'a bit fascist' and say anime was best in the 80s - important to provide no examples there.
@MichaelLoda
@BellularGaming
Also as much as "just close it" is fair to you, personally, it's a bombardment of aggressive advertisement designed to dismantle people psychologically.
For clarity, I mean we need more characterisation & time spent with characters. We all *understand* the Jailer's motives, but we don't have a reason to care. We've been told why he's upset, but not shown. We'll probably get more detail in Sylvanas - and that's the problem.
@BellularGaming
Cinematic was executed well, as to be expected from the team, but character actions and story progression leave a significant amount to be desired.
@BellularGaming
Most of the one-time content is fun, and the zone, atmospherically, is some of the best work they've done in years. Content team should be genuinely proud of it.
But timegating and less interesting repeatable content feels like stubbing your toe on the way out.
Leyst did absolutely nothing of the sort. What Leyst did was disagree that there was racist intent in an off-white set of wizard robes & a hat xmog.
Implying anything beyond that, or implying that he's responsible for what other people say is outright incorrect.
@that_kind_oforc
Idk that leystv guy I think his name is. I’ve seen him post a couple times, idk anything about him.
Then some other smaller ones jumped in to try and grab some of that sweet sweet algorithm.
I have come out of a very deep research hole, and immediately needed to sit down and share with you.
Turns out FF12 holds most of the answers we're looking for... but FF14 being an MMO makes the theme it's aiming for REALLY special.
This is hilarious, but also how people ruin games for themselves:
Character action games are like Tears of the Kingdom's puzzles - you can brute force them, and the designers allow that.
But the real joy is having fun with the mechanics.
Get creative! Try crazy, stylish stuff!
@TaliesinEvitel
I'd add about a hundred asterisks to this, but I mostly agree.
*Class tuning
*Story we haven't seen yet
*Patch content & patch speed
*Whether the shippable bugs impact experience
And because perception is everything...
*How much players have forgiven Shadowlands' crimes
In 1968's Summer Olympics, Dick Fosbury won Gold in the high jump. His technique, the Fosbury flop, was vastly superior to the normal straddle jump, which was only possible because of new tech - deep mats.
Everyone now uses the Fosbury flop.
This isn't about the high jump.
WoW has been a very different game for a long time, but this change, more than any other, makes it clear.
In Dragonflight, they aren't afraid of that anymore.
Resurrection Sickness in Dragonflight will cause players to suffer 50% durability loss, but the debuff afterwards will only last 1 minute instead of 10.

Pandaemonium's first two fights were fairly simple, but 3 and 4 were a blast!
The joy that comes from discovering mechanics blind is really hard to describe, they're just the right level of intuitive to get them wrong once and never again.
1) Giving players the Great Vault as a motivation to do content removes their other motivations.
2) Random rewards are dangerous when predictable.
3) Humans have a bias towards negative experiences, so disappointment hurts more than a big win helps.
...and that's only to start.
for what it's worth, Super Mario 64 is still one of the most fun games of all time because every single second of gameplay is you moving, and movement is always fun
even in WoW, Heroic Leap/Shadowstep/Grappling Hook/Fel Rush etc make every second of playing SO much better
Two things irk me about this kind of statement: First, they don’t seem to deal with reality, or at least they ignorantly project one that sentiment disagrees with.
Second, they seem written for the public to read, rather than employees. PR puff is not how to speak to people.
Activision Blizzard executive Fran Townsend, who was the Homeland Security Advisor to George W. Bush from 2004-2007 and joined Activision in March, sent out a very different kind of email that has some Blizzard employees fuming.
This is a natural social response to a design-enforced class system. When time is money and speed/efficiency is the goal, non-whales are less desirable.
Same way you take higher DPS players in groups in WoW - more loot per hour. But instead of DPS, it’s likelihood to swipe.
The boss theme is a prayer song to the city the boss is the patron deity of

The best teams attract the best people - because they know they can only excel around peers willing to push them.
That was one of Blizzard's strengths, back in the day - might even still be.

10.0.7's campaign is wild.
As a quick lead into 10.1, establishing Sarkareth as villain and the patch's themes, it's insane.
The Emberthal & Ebyssian character work is so damn good, in writing, VO and the cutscene's animations.
Unreal, tbh. The glow-up continues to shock me.
This feels... kind of unprecedented? I think Playstation are one of the few organisations Activision could be forced to answer to.
