Just had my rota through for the next 8 months. Despite me giving over one year's notice, they have rostered me to work 9AM-9PM on the weekend of my wedding 🙃
Booked a family holiday for Mar 24 in Jul 23. Spent months trying to contact the rota coord at the Trust I start at in Feb to organise leave. Told I needed to find swaps but not given contact details of other drs. It’s all become so stressful that we’ve cancelled the holiday.
I know my contractual rights, how to throw my weight around, and if it comes to it I simply won't be turning up to the shifts. It's still pretty galling, and just about every other doctor I know has a story similar to this.
Medical staffing/rota coordination is a thankless job and has been woefully understaffed/unresponsive at most trusts where I've worked.
@SWBHnhs
is the only exception
Update: Speedy resolution from the rota team and have been granted the leave. Somehow, a friend of mine who is also a registrar at the same trust had an identical situation 🤯 (also thankfully speedily resolved)
First set of solo med reg nights ✅
Used to get teased at med school for wanting to be the med reg one day. Happy to say the experience has lived up to expectations in the best possible way. Still buzzing off the adrenaline 🤯
@oxforddoc
Thanks Mark! Yep, bonkers is the word for it. I don't think it's a coincidence that the best staffed medical workforce team I've worked with was also the most responsive and reasonable
Tune in to
@OnlyConnectQuiz
and see Joey (former Uni Challenge champion), Hugh (former UC finalist) and me (former UC... contestant) answer some hard questions
Gonna be on Only Connect again this evening at 1930 on BBC2 - tune in to see them playing one of my favourite ever pieces in a question for our opponents 😢
If you're stuck for something to do on New Year's Eve (and who isn't?), don't miss what is perhaps our most special Special of the year.
It's the Only Connect DOCTORS SPECIAL - at 8pm on
@BBCTwo
- a tribute to healthcare workers everywhere. With a twist...

Fear not, I will be enjoying the best day of my life and not on medical ward cover. Only real gripe is that the system allows it to happen. The frustration should be all theirs, they're the ones who will have to find locum cover.
Also gotta thank big cutie
@paperflags
for watching loads of old episodes with me and letting me get the answers despite the fact she'd worked them out 10 seconds earlier. Here are pics of her being adorable and me being silly
That win really feels momentous - Sharapova/Seles/Hingis-esque; think this is the happiest and most excited I've been about a British sporting victory in a long time
Just solo-ed an emergency chest drain at 8:30pm. Feeling like a proper grown up med reg. You'll have to go some way to convince me there is a cooler job in the hospital 🤯
#IMT3
Last shift as an IMT2 today - has been a very odd and busy year but I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with so many fantastic colleagues at
@HeartlandsUHB
@mouseter_chef
I would love to think the most useful knowledge I impart to FY1s is how to evaluate common electrolyte abnormalities or assess AKI/CKD patients. In reality it's telling them to check their payslip and have a low threshold for calling out BS like this at work
Final of Only Connect! Time to hand over the torch to The 007s or The Suits. Rooting for The Suits as like us they've nailed the "Junior Doctor / Captain / Balliolite" lineup
Not sure how I stumbled across this, but it is somewhat telling that it was published a year ago and had not appeared on my radar.
Hypertension doctors have issued a position document on the management of hypertensive crises.
@BIHSoc_Events
@LucyCarter6
@SWBHnhs
Thanks Lucy! I hope you are keeping well 😊. Tbh I am only frustrated by the fact the system allows it to happen - I know I won't be working those days so it's up to them to find a locum to cover me
@jfdwolff
I attempted to explain the Fürst ratio and the electrolyte free water clearance formula to a group of IMT2s yesterday. I think the blank faces suggest I need to refine the way I attempted to explain it...
@ChemiSteve
Going to live up to my stereotype and suggest Mahler (1, 5 & 6 probably the best to start with). Beethoven 3, Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique and Brahms 1-4 are all good fun too
Counsel: Are you saying you would be willing to give CPR if the court orders it, but your position is that it’s futile?
Dr: If we were asked to perform CPR, the entire clinical team would be very uncomfortable + it would cause a lot of distress
Big news! Was just googling earlier today when EMPA-KIDNEY was set to be published. Looks like they're about to complete the set and show that SGLT2i work for non-diabetic, non-proteinuric CKD
Moving trusts in August - reams and reams of poorly formatted forms to fill, print, sign, scan and email - every year the same. Surprised it's never replaced with an online form
Have been getting a bit lost down some Twitter rabbit holes since getting back from work today. It is a shame that DNR / treatment escalation limits seem to be poorly understood by a not insignificant proportion of people on here - some equivalences being drawn with eugenics
