The NHS has had a multicultural workforce since its inception without which it wouldn't exist today. Nearly 87k Drs in the NHS are from overseas. The cost of replacing them with UK-trained Drs will cost ~£42b as below -regardless of fact that NHS is so enriched by diversity

I told ⁦ @BBCNews ⁩ that key to reducing Omicron NHS staff absence is to protect healthcare workers with FFP2/3 respirator masks that filter airborne spread unlike surgical masks. Unacceptable to put frontline staff at risk in treating infectious patients at close proximity

So touched by generosity of local community donating eye protection from charity (left pic) and local school (right) to our practice. First eye protection we’ve received since nil available online and still waiting for NHS supplies

@danielgoyal 1 hour for first appt, 20 min follow ups- does justice to what being a GP should be all about - the time to listen, examine, treat multiple morbidity and care for the patient as a whole person. The antithesis of UK’s conveyor belt 10 min appts fuelled by GP shortages

18 months after highlighting disproportionate impact of COVID on ethnic minorities & 2 government commissioned reports later, still 30% in intensive care are from ethnic minorities and higher excess deaths 👇We need an action plan - not reviews - to end these race inequalities

@ShabaNabi @Telegraph @DailyMailUK @jkaffash @NikkiKF @rvautrey @doctor_katie @dr_zo This is shameful and unacceptable, Shaba, Please pass on our support to your team. Latest @TheBMA survey published yesterday shows GPs working harder, longer hours and protecting patients from infection spread through remote consultations takes longer and is exhausting.

As it's South Asian Heritage Month, it's noteworthy that back in 1961, Lord Cohen of Birkenhead stated in a House of Lords debate: ‘The Health Service would have collapsed if it had not been for the enormous influx from junior doctors from such countries as India and Pakistan.’

UK has 46k fewer doctors than OECD average fuelling shortest EU GP consultation times (10 min) & access probs; workforce shortage biggest block to clear hospital backlog. My Spring statement letter to @RishiSunak calls for 11k extra med school places next 3yrs to reach parity 1/3

Thank you @BIDAUK - this award belongs to the doctors and healthcare workers- mostly BAME and from overseas- who tragically lost their lives serving the nation during the pandemic, and to the generations of IMGs that have kept the NHS afloat for decades since its inception

Let's not forget #NHS wouldn't have survived to celebrate 75yrs without its migrant workforce including Windrush. 1961 Lord Cohen: ‘The Health Service would have collapsed if it had not been for the enormous influx from junior doctors from such countries as India and Pakistan.’

Vital we control covid/omicron spread and protect NHS staff (including higher grade FFP2+ masks) to prevent sickness and self-isolation absence as NHS grapples with biggest ever backlog of care and winter pressures - excerpt of my interview on @SkyNews

We should never have needed to lobby for the government’s moral duty to value our overseas workforce who have been a bedrock giving so much of themselves and risking their health during the pandemic

A national lockdown announcement must be simultaneously accompanied with a coherent, explicit exit strategy and measures that will not see a repetition of rebound infection surge as post 1st lockdown, and with absolute assurance of competent *NHS* track/trace with capacity.

Important not to downplay the serious reality of Covid hospitalisations from soaring case numbers - the UK continues to have the highest hospitalisation rate/million people internationally; 26.9% increase on last week, and this before we see full impact of #FreedomDay

Being excluded is one of the most painful experiences for anyone. Experiencing it as a child can leave long lasting emotional scars. This incident was investigated but represents a far wider reality of discrimination we all have a duty to eradicate.

This is what’s achievable when #NHS resourced to deliver - a remarkable coalition of clinical staff, community and volunteers with skin in the game to protect the nation. Contrast with billions spent on privately outsourced test & trace without outcomes

England is not only an outlier internationally but also within our own shores with devolved nations continuing mandatory face masks in indoor public places. Unfathomable divergence of Westminster policy once again on the same virus & science across borders of our small island

Prioritising healthcare staff with Covid-19 vaccine is about prioritising patient care - as in my letter to @NHSEngland today with rocketing cases and hospitalisation it will be devastating for NHS if more staff unable to work due to Covid illness

Absolutely @hughes_eilir Vital for public to be made aware that unlike face coverings, FFP2/N95 masks protect the wearer as well as reduce transmission & are readily available. With Omicron circulating this simple public health measure can significantly reduce infection spread

🙏 @ApnaNhs - truly touched to receive the "Shining Light Award"-my inspiration is the "shining stars" of ethnic minority staff who the NHS is built on, who worked against all odds in the 50, 60s, 70s onwards, who taught me in training & who make the NHS exist and function daily

Thanks @EveningStandard for fair reporting of my letter to @sajidjavid urging him to tackle abuse of GPs & staff. We need govt to show visible support for a workforce at breaking point under pressures of past 18 months while also vaccinating the nation.
