Well this happened! I started this journey back in January, and yesterday I received some amazing news! I am the 956th meteorologist to earn the honors the AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal of approval! 🥳
"A bit too close for comfort". We saw an abundant amount of lightning overnight. Barrett Gutter was able to use his shutter settings on his camera and caught this cloud-to-ground lightning strike! 😱🤯

My thunder buddy, best friend, & big brother passed away yesterday and I am numb. If I could have only talked to him for 10 more minutes. I’ll now have to listen to videos to hear his voice again. He changed so many people’s lives. Idk what I’m going to do without
@AlexHerbstWX
I've been keeping a secret these past few months. I am sooooo excited to announce my husband and I are expecting our first child in October! Yes, we know the gender, but I'm keeping that under wraps for another month 🥰. Little nugget and I will see y'all on the air tonight!
Amory has taken a hit from the same supercell that hit Rolling Fork and Silver City earlier tonight. That debris signature is probably the worst I have seen.
After a week of traveling to San Salvador and 1.5 years of putting my life into a 66 page document, I am so excited to say I PASSED my defense!!! Huge shoutout to my committee
@DrKimWood
, Dr. Fuhrmann, and Dr. Rodgers for all of the support and guidance over the past two years!
WOW!!! I just had a one on one sit down interview with the Director of the National Weather Service Ken Graham! There are some big changes coming to the meteorology industry! My mind is blown and I am so excited to see what happens over the next several years!!!
CAUGHT ON CAMERA- Piney Woods Campus Officer David Williams caught a video of the twister in a tornado warned storm this morning. You can view a better glimpse starting at 52 seconds.

I can finally announce I’m joining the 16 WAPT News team FULL TIME as the Weekend AM Meteorologist!
I am beyond excited to be working for an amazing company & under one of the best Chief Meteorologists in the Southeast. Catch me on the air Sat. and Sun. morning at 6 & 8am.
Last week I started my NEW contract at 16 WAPT! I’ve learned so much in my 3 years here & covered SO much from tornado outbreaks to major hurricanes, a historic ice storm to two major floods. It’s been a long journey, but I‘m so glad to still be here. Mississippi you have my ❤️!
I work with some of the best people! ❤️❤️ Thank you so much to my news director and general manager for this sweet surprise!!! It’s the little things and I was so shocked.
Four years ago today I started my first on-air job as a part time meteorologist at WJTV-12. I've been so thankful for all of the opportunities that have crossed my path so far.
Thread 1/5: TV can be an illusion sometimes, including how we feel. We bring a smile every morning, but behind the cameras it can be completely different. Today, I wore purple for mental health and suicide prevention. Sept. 11, 2019 would be a day I would never forget.
There they are! I introduce to you the Class of 2021 Broadcast Meteorologists! I'm so proud of each and every one of you for persevering through one of the toughest times. I can't wait to see where your life takes you next!
Alex Herbst’s tree of life was planted outside of Hilbun Hall today! Thank you to everyone who contributed to raising money for it! The memorial scholarship fundraiser is still open. I can post the link later this week (after severe weather).
Scary sight tonight. We continue to get images from the Byram/Rankin County tornado. This one comes from Kevin Fromme. The picture was taken along Hwy 49 crossing near the Walmart ...few blocks south of the airport in Pearl.

Hi everyone! I am a part of a project w/ Miss. State, & we are looking at how people react to weather and climate. It would mean a lot if you would complete this 5-10mn survey. Help me get more feedback from the country by retweeting if you can!
The fact people are pissed about us breaking into the Chiefs vs Eagles game… I understand it sucks, but people’s lives are in danger, so we are going to do our job. You can watch the game on another outlet if you want (btw Google says it’s 14-7 Chiefs if you need to know)
Working from home for the next week and a half (no I’m not sick...just in quarantine from after my wedding)...but at least I can look like Christmas, wear green and not key out, and wear fuzzy owl pajamas without anyone knowing 🥰
We are officially a team of 5!!!!! Everyone meet Katie Garch! She is from West Palm Beach and graduated from Florida State! You’ll see her on the air later this month. Please give her a warm welcome to the ‘Sip.
You’ll see a new face tomorrow morning! Elease give
@sydneygold_wx
a warm welcome to the 16 WAPT weather team! Sydney just finished her Bachelor’s at LSU and is about to start her masters at MSU! You’ll see her a few weekends a month. Y’all will love absolutely her!
Confirmed tornado in the Whistler community in Wayne County. Chicken houses were destroyed at a farm. Trees damaged. No one injured. Credit from Devon Polansky.
It’s like the 2020 nightmare all over again. This was crossing the spillway around 8:30 this morning. Peak is expected Monday/Tuesday.

CONFIRMED TORNADO in Byram this evening. Images from Ethan Lewis. His family was outside but took shelter right before the tornado hit. Lots of tree damage/ uprooted trees around the property. All family members are safe.

It has been a long but rewarding day. Was called in at midnight to monitor the AM wind event. I ended today by leading optimistic and bright upcoming professional & broadcast mets from
@EastMissNWA_AMS
around the station and the studio! This is why I love my job!!
@16WAPTNews
My year has been made and it’s only January 2nd!! It was such a blessing to meet
@KarenMintonWSB
this morning. So sad to see her retire in 2 months, but I’m excited to see where she travels! Thank you for being an inspiration and motivation to follow my dreams as a meteorologist!
Thread: THANK YOU EVERYONE who has donated to Alex's tree of life. We were able to raise enough money for Mississippi State to plant a tree in his name this fall! We are hoping to have a dedication for Alex in the spring by Hilbun Hall.
We are now on at 5am every weekend! Join the 16 WAPT News team bright and early every weekend morning now from 5-7am and again from 8-9am on 16 WAPT News.

@AlexHerbstWX
Tree of Life link is live. Any and all donations are welcome. The goal is to raise the money in time for the tree to be planted in late October. Scholarship fund should be up soon.

Not exactly what you want to see in SE Mississippi....clouds breaking (for several hours). Temperatures are in the mid-80s and dewpoints are in the low 70s. If we see any tornadic activity in Mississippi today, this is going to be the prime area for development.

I’m excited to announce I’ll OFFICIALLY be the weekday morning meteorologist starting Friday. Even better news?!?!?
@FranklinWapt
is joining with me! She’ll be our third anchor while also leading the way on the weekend mornings. Go team WAPT!
Yesterday marked 6 months with 16 WAPT News! I am forever grateful for this opportunity and being able to work in Jackson, MS. Here’s to more adventures and weather here in the Magnolia state!

Did you know today’s
#DressForSTEM
Day? Today we celebrate all females who chose or will choose a career in the STEM field by wearing purple. While you see many stations with at least one female meteorologist, only 29% of meteorologist are females and 8% are Chief Meteorologists!
Tornado warnings issued across the country in 2020 vs 2021 so far. Central Alabama (NWS Birmingham market) has already seen more tornado warnings issued from Jan. 1- Apr. 3 than all of last year. The NWS Jackson market so far has had almost 50% of what all of 2020 was last year🤔
We now have Tropical Depression 15 just off the Carolina coastline. It is expected to strengthen to a tropical storm overnight which will then be named Nana.

STARKVILLE, MS: I may or may not have slept from 8pm-12am and missed the snowfall...BUT...I was able to make a small snowman from the snow that stuck on the cars (at 12:05am). I am now content. 😁
A lot on my mind today. Praying for everyone who was impacted by today's severe weather. I know we will continue to see this go into the late night hours. Be thankful if you did not see anything today; instead, pray for those who did.

Found out last night we won a Southeast Emmy for our coverage on the 2020 historic flooding. Newscast was on a Sunday (Feb. 16), but I was sent out in the field to report on what could be a once-in-a-lifetime event. Never thought a year and a half later would lead to this!🤯❤️
Visited Rolling Fork today to help out. There is hope and togetherness in this community like no other.
Grab an item on the list and drop it off at your local donation site or sign up to volunteer. Heed the call and help your fellow communities! ❤️
It’s just me and my green wall.
I may be done with practicum and I may be graduating in a week, but I am so blessed to be one of two Practicum TA’s next year at Mississippi State while Freelancing at 16WAPT ❤️
Next up we have
@ChristanaK_WAPT
. Christana is graduating with her Master's Degree in Geosciences with an emphasis in Professional Meteorology/Climatology. In 2018, she received her B.S. from MSU as well! Congrats Christana!
So incredibly blessed today! I was able to attend the Louisiana-Mississippi AP Broadcasters and Media Editors Collegiate banquet. I won first place in Best 2017 Weathercast as well as a Best in Show Scholarship (the scholarship was inside an APA book)!! 👩🏼💼🌤⛈

You don’t see this every day! My friend Valerie is studying in Iceland, and she was able to snap this video a few days ago! That’s SNOW at the Mt. Fagradalsfjall volcano. The volcano was dormant for 6,000 years before erupting back on March 19.

Life is fragile. Hug your loved ones. Let people know when you get somewhere safely. Our 16 WAPT News family lost a good one tonight. We are all still in shock. Not much information is known at this time. Please be in prayer for Marcel's family and friends.
16 WAPT employee Marcel Walker was killed in a crash early Saturday morning. Marcel, a WAPT director, joined the WAPT family 16 years ago and was a beloved member of the news team who will be deeply missed. We extend our deepest condolences to Marcel's family.

You know...I love college football as much as the next person, but when it pushes back an hour long show a full 40-45mn plus being up since 2am....yeahhhhh no 😴😴
It happened quick, but I was able to pick up an outflow boundary on our Vicksburg skycam. The outflow was caused by the rain and storms across the river in Louisiana. Pretty cool!
