On January 6th, a friend texted me. He'd found an injured dog by a garbage dump in Bangalore. It couldn't walk, it couldn't even stand. Most of its fur was gone, it was covered in sores. He didn't have the time to help it but sent me this picture. 🧵👇🏿

Bruno's legs have healed fully. Incredibly, despite all the suffering, he is gentle and loving to a fault. He does not bark at other dogs, is comfortable and gentle around cats, and only raises his voice at humans when he can't contain his excitement around meal times.

Bruno had other ideas. It took 2 hours of fluids + being covered in damp towels to breathe some life into him. He was covered in ticks and fleas, which meant I was covered in the same. But then he raised his head for the first time, and none of that mattered.

We introduced him to our other rescues, who loved him almost instantly. That's the thing with Bruno. He loves unconditionally and sparks love in everyone around him as well. Here's Bruno with his fellow rescues, Yeti and Mizu. Oh, and the remnants of what was once a mattress.

A few days and a bath later, Bruno finally began to show glimpses of what he actually looked like. With his floppy ears, his short tail, his white-gold fur, and a booming bark, he appeared to be a labrador. Our best guess is he was a breeder discard. On that note, f #ck breeders.

Back to the dog. It took me about 15 minutes to reach him, and when I did, I almost wished I could turn away. He was more miserable in person than any picture could convey. But despite the obvious horror he'd been through, he still wagged his tail when I called out to him.

He must have been lying there for days because one side of him was covered in open sores. He offered no fight when I picked him up. He feebly tried to lick my face, but he didn't have the strength for that. This is him at the vet. The vets, of course, held out little hope.

As it turns out, it wasn't neurological. What the doctors didn't realise at the time--and I don't blame them given how much was wrong with him--was that both of his legs had been broken. This was no accident. Someone had broken Bruno's front legs and left him to die.

They asked me for a name, and without thinking, I said Bruno. Yes, it is a stupid name for anything, let alone a dog. In my defence, he wasn't expected to live long enough to hold it against me. His body temperature was 106°C. Any higher, his organs fail. I expected the worst.

Maybe there was life left in this dog after all. Once he was slightly more lucid, the doctors put him on the ground to see if he could now stand or walk. Bad move. His legs gave out the second he tried to sit up. His head bounced off the floor. "Must be neurological," they said.
