This is an abject lie. Bail reform was the product of an exhaustive process with stakeholders from all sides at the table. Opponents of these needed reforms must stop misleading the public to try and undermine the progress we're making.

They did not ask a single judge, a single district attorney, a single police chief in the state to comment on this most significant criminal justice reform in the history of New York. And now we are left to pick up the debris that it’s going to create.

#BREAKING Due to our settlement, the NYPD has—for the first time—turned over records about the millions it seizes in property during arrests. In 2016, the NYPD had $72 million of cash. The 160,000 documents the NYPD turned over will tell us so much more

The #DiplomaPrivilege bill is just the first step. We should also: - Do away with the Uniform Bar Exam altogether - Reexamine the NY Law Course, NY Law Examination, and MPRE Let's take this chance to make this system fairer for everyone.

BREAKING: In a joint statement with @BklynDefender and @LegalAidNYC , we demand ICE bring people to court. Depriving people of in-person court hearings is an attack on the rights of our clients to have their meaningful day in court.

With @NYCCouncil 's passage of #Intro741 , NYC has become the first jurisdiction to make calls free in its jails since correctional systems started charging for them. This will save communities $8M a year, and the difference will be, for so many, immeasurable. #PeopleOverProfit

Often, well-meaning parents or spouses call the police to check-up on mentally ill loved ones without realizing the majority of the police are not trained to handle mental health calls. The police are trained to "shoot first, ask questions later."

On the coldest day in 2 years, we're hearing from ICE detainees at Bergen Co. Jail that there's no heat in their cells. They've been told, “the cold will kill the coronavirus, so we’re not turning it on.” Holding ANYONE in ICE detention right now is inhumane. #FreeThemAll

THREAD We’re at the steps of City Hall to call for the repeal of NYS’s Police secrecy law, 50-a 50-a is the country’s most secretive law on police misconduct, and one of only TWO states that specifically restricts public access to info on cops’ discipline records. #Repeal50a

***JOINT DEFENDER STATEMENT ON ATTEMPTS TO GUT BAIL REFORM*** It is unconscionable that lawmakers would use a public health crisis as leverage to pass a bill that would increase jail populations across the state. This would ultimately set New York decades backwards #BailReform

Today, Google released data revealing that New York is among the states most frequently hijacking Google's “sensorvault” system to track the locations of its citizens. The release sheds light on the unconstitutional & opaque practice of reverse warrants.

Today, the City Council's hearing on the conditions at Rikers prioritized the voices of those with power and allowed them to evade responsibility with little pushback. Here is what incarcerated individuals who are living this nightmare in cages at Rikers Island need you to know:
