“I know this game got valleys and peaks; Expectations for dips; For precipitation we stack chips, hardly.” Be curious, not judgmental. NOT INVESTMENT ADVICE.
This is still really raw and I have more questions than answers. But, it’s very important and intersects with what I speak about here. Hopefully my family’s tragedy can help another family avoid tragedy.
I saw
@RobinhoodApp
response and can confirm they did reach out. The family isn’t ready to speak yet. Since they can’t release account details here’s the screenshot.
I'm sitting here crying reading this piece from
@AntoineGara
and
@Forbes
I cannot thank all of you enough. I'm just going to keep saying it over and over again.
@Twitter
I owe you a lot. I'm happy this all may prevent future tragedy.
But here’s the truth. AND PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THIS IF YOU’RE YOUNG.
The markets are bananas right now. It’s not the time for amateurs. Really really pay attention to position sizing. Stay away from exotic instruments like options and futures.
Was talking with some friends this past weekend. Didn't know if I should post their advice.
Slept on it for a few days.
Young people, GET INTO THE OFFICE. You are missing out on key relationship building opportunities.
I do have one ask- if you know of Robinhood willingly extending way too much credit/margin please let me know. They are squarely on my radar and I have time for a research project.
So, he began buying and selling options. Fast forward to sometime this past week and his account showed him owing $700k+. How does a 20 year old with no income get access to that kind of leverage/exposure?!
Judge investments on their own merits, as you understand them.
And, if you find yourself in a world of shit please talk to your family. Listen to
@QTRResearch
and
@sanglucci
pod about blowing up. Shit, hit me up. You are not alone. Finance isn’t worth losing your life over.
The emotional stress from the exposure caused him to take his own life. I don’t feel right sharing this, but I also don’t feel right keeping it from the world.
Why? Because recently I’ve been joking about how much I love DDTG. I’ve laughed at the Robinhood memes.
These are the times Buffett talks about being more careful because others aren’t.
Almost everything you see on this platform is coming from someone with a bias, myself included. Don’t pay attention to how many followers someone has, where they work, etc.
Just got rear ended. Family and I are fine.
Guy who hit us is not. He had 7 bottles of pills and a lot of booze on him. Could barely walk.
Use Uber folks. It ain’t worth driving.
Also, send positive thoughts to that guy. He’s going to need them.
His car 👇🏻
Robinhood shutting down trading on GME and AMC, when the little guy is making a run on the stocks, is somewhat humorous to me. Mostly because it has never been a secret that Robinhood isn't actually there for the little guy.
So, how long will it take for people to realize Apple actually is hurting small business and that Facebook isn't lying about helping small business?
My guess is politics will get in the way of rational thought.
PS. And a bit of a cover my ass here. I haven’t seen the actual account. I only know what his final note said. He cited the figure, I am relaying what he said.
-16% quarter. And that folks, is how it's not supposed to be done.
Some bad decisions. Some bad execution. Some stuff moving in ways I think is silly.
Oh well.
Good news is I know I'm not a closet indexer.
Here’s a piece of life advice my dad gave me:
“If you’re ever arguing with someone and they aren’t in the room, just stop.”
Found myself doing it in the shower. Nothing good ever comes of that inner dialogue.
Ladies and gentlemen, The Business Brew is happy to introduce

I really wouldn’t listen to this quickly. I’ve listened almost 5 times and picked up something new each time.
My cousin in law was interested in investing. He opened a Robinhood account. And, he seemed to be enjoying the markets. As many of us do, or have done, he got interested in options. He believed he had “no margin” selected on his account.
“The role of financial markets is to take money away from mediocre and underperforming companies and put it in stable, growing, high return on capital companies. Money has an almost metaphysical attraction to places where it is put to careful, good use.”
I’ll just keep saying this over and over:
Love your family and friends. Practice radical acceptance. Tell them you love them.
It has been one of the only things that has been enduringly meaningful to me.
In fact, the only thing.
Idea from a buddy in distressed.
Screen for $2Bn-$4Bn enterprise value companies with ~$100mm in equity value. If they truly don’t have default risk you can find some really juiced equity.
Come to think of it, sounds like
@verdadcap
strategy.
The younger me used to see what I perceived to be a crazy valuation and dismiss it. Now I wonder why the valuation might be justified.
I’m glad the old me is dead.
When I was a kid (around 7 or so) I developed the habit of looking at restaurant bathrooms. Everytime my family would go to the restaurant my dad would say “Well Bill, how’s the bathroom?”
I’d then predict food quality based on bathroom quality. It still works pretty darn well.
Let me get this straight -
Nicotine % in each stick may decline. Packs have the same amount of sticks. People want the same amount of nicotine.
How doesn’t this lead to more pack sales?
Hung out with a buddy who sells insurance in Florida. Says he can’t get policies for high end real estate placed right now. Even Chubb not very interested.
Not great Bob.
To the media - This is paragraph 1 of the suicide note. It’s part of the public domain. Quote away.
If you’d like verification, the family will provide that.
Sat next to someone who doesn’t want kids last night.
To each their own, but here’s an unsolicited opinion.
My wife was 8 mos pregnant with our first. She asked if we made a mistake. I said “Maybe.”
1st, don’t be me. The correct answer is no.
2nd, was the best thing ever.
The Suicide Hotline number is 800-273-8255.
Please call them before doing something to yourself. Trust me, your family and friends want you around. Seek help.
From Voyager's subreddit. Pretty messed up; we keep talking about these companies throwing around nine-figure sums and make fun of people like Su Zhu, but in the end, they're all still living lavish lives. That $650m wasn't theirs - it was hundreds of people's savings added up.

It’s time to ban Members of Congress & other senior officials from owning or trading any company stocks while in office. They can put their savings in conflict-free investments like mutual funds, or they can pick a different line of work.

Was with some friends last night.
They have 3 children and are pregnant with a 4th.
Lost a baby at 16 weeks before they conceived again.
However, given the Florida abortion law my friend’s wife was almost forced to induce labor in order to deliver a non feasible fetus.…
“Good investing requires the weird combination of patience and aggression. And not many people have it.”

That’s what I’m here for.
Let the man riff.
It took me a long time to figure shit out. Life, work, family, etc.
If you’re younger and follow me -
Don’t get discouraged. Keep your head down. Find a passion. Lean in. Understand it will take 2-3x the time you’d like it to.
Keep moving forward.
Here’s a personal finance tip -
Don’t buy nice things until you have kids that are grown.
This will have to be balanced against spousal happiness. But it’s the right tip.
I just sent two small children to their room. From across the house I hear
“We are going to punch daddy right in the wiener.”
I mean, what? But also, they did wait to say it behind my back.
I’m very confused right now. And a little worried.
Used to be an analyst for a team of commodity (Ag) bankers. In one meeting someone asked the CFO about revenue growth. He looked at the guy and said "Revenue is an ego game. We could boost revenue tomorrow if we wanted. We run this company for gross profit."
Stuck w/ me.
In a shocking development the hardest hit industry during the pandemic didn’t invest heavily and/or go on the offensive.
Come to Twitter for the best takes!
I know I am throwing some heavy shit out there. And I understand if you want to look away. I don't mean to keep it in your timeline, but right now I have no choice.
I wish I didnt want more pain to hit Silicon Valley. I know it won’t be good for the country.
But man do some of these fucks need a comeuppance.
Good amount of people mistaking brains for ZIRP.
So, I’m a little high, feeling a bit emotional and what not.
But just wanted to say thank you to everyone that has my back.
I appreciate y’all.
Have a great weekend.
Having family members that outlive their minds isn’t easy. Have hard conversations when everyone is “there.” Don’t let it get too late.
That’s actually advice.
Kid wants to buy stock in a cardboard box producer because “Boxes come all the time. And they aren’t stopping.”
Started researching $IP with him.
Think this is going to be fun.
Need to figure out how to keep it fun.
The Business Brew is happy to introduce the man behind
@Greenbackd
.
We definitely had some informal moments here. I hope y’all get to know Toby better from this. He’s a true friend and I had fun doing this.
I’m such a dope I don’t even understand why DocuSign is a viable business. Much less a $49Bn one.
Doesn’t seem very hard to replicate. I guess that’s the power of first mover and integration into workflows. 🤷🏻♂️
PS. I can initial and sign on my iPad for free.
I’m pretty excited for the next few years.
We’re going to get to find out which companies were the real deal and which ones were just bubble valuations.
I’m at this weird point in life where almost everything I thought I cared about means very little.
Not nothing. But very little.
Some of my feelings are probably because of the humble pie I got served in the market. Think a lot is cuz I sort of stopped caring.
Cleaning dishes, looked out the window to see the kids incredibly happy talking to their grandparents.
I hope some of you get to experience something similar tonight.
Merry Christmas.
May we all strive to live lives impactful enough that when we die a community of people mourns together. And, while sad, recycles stories of us that make others smile.
I’m a proud Munger cult member.
Even if cults are stupid.
I currently live next to both a house full of sorority girls and a house full of frat guys. This could become Neighbors or Old School pretty quickly. Not sure which one...
The Big Short would have been a much better story if it highlighted all the people that blew up in that trade before the people were successful.

Facebook Marketplace is pretty nuts. Listed the Peloton, sold within an hour, picked it up, pretty happy all around.
Will miss my man Alex Touissant. I’m onto the next workout.
The long term impact of $AMC + $GME isn't about what happens to these companies or their stocks. It is about the public, which views the stock market (and economy) as something that is manipulated and not trusted.
I know Meta is this huge shitco that blew way too much in buybacks and has an insane founder that’s obsessed with a stupid concept.
But also, Insta has given me ~50% of my XMas shopping via great recommendations. Plus easy checkout.
As for me, I like the stock.
My favorite part of FinTwit is the intersection that worships investing and hates Bill Gates.
I get that your jealous. Dude did everything you wish you could. Then did what pisses you off the most by not hoarding it so you can’t actually go at him.
