Forever a modernist. He may have been the quintessential modernist. (btw I love that the picture is here in Donosti, where a large part of his heart always feels near)
"Maybe that’s enlightenment enough: to know that there is no final resting place of the mind; no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom...is realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go."
― Anthony Bourdain RIP (1956 - 2018) (died today, June 8, 2018)
I hope they pull a miracle and find Titanic submersible and all, but the fact the international media is a 1000 times more interested in five super wealthy tourists than the 650 refugees who died in the worst refugee boat disaster last week in Greece is galling to me.

My wife was once getting lengthily mansplained at the gym when one of her (male) students approached asking for advice on his paper. She followed him to when water fountain, annoyed until he said “nah, I just wanted to help get you away from that dude”
If you teach at a university in southern Louisiana there is no good excuse for having a major midterm scheduled the Friday of Mardi Gras weekend. I'm sure you think there is, but there isn't.

Living in the Basque Country and seeing kids integrated everywhere (bars etc) and seeing infrastructure for kids (like you reference) it becomes clear the problem with the US is one of culture AND infrastructure and the two exacerbate each other.
PSA: if king cake is in the house tomorrow night, save it. Im a *big* follower of “only in season,” but there’s nothing more hipster/transplant than throwing out perfectly good king cake to a appease Twitter. No Cajun or Creole did that ever. If you boughtit in season, you good.
New Orleans hot take: Parkway is at best the 5th best poboy shop in town (6th before Gene's closed) but has an outsized reputation because too many other poboy shops are in too small of a physical footprint, dividing loyalties, whereas Parkway gets ALL of mid-city.
So this has been going on for at least 6 months at a shop in Magazine and it angers me every time. As if it’s not bad enough they are gentrifying our culture into Disneyworld, they are actively penalizing locals for daring to shop local. (1/2)
People making fun of Chewbacchus….. I can guarantee you I dislike that parade at least as much as you, but get over yourselves. They are coming after Carnival. Stand up for Carnival. It’s worth it. It doesn’t matter WHAT you think of Chew or Thoth etc. This is not funny.
The look of envy on people when they realize how life changing our son’s school moving to a 10 min. walk from our house has been makes me realize how easy this could be if N.O. hadn’t sold our schools to mini corporations designed for Karen from Des Moines & Chad from Huntsville

permanently is a big word, but I agree this is going to have longer, more far-reaching effects than the duration of this administration. It's going to be a LONG time before anyone trusts them.
I absolutely love that my wife decides to take an "indefinite break" from Twitter, logs back on for all of 30 seconds to make a King Cake joke, and unwittingly tweets the most seen tweet of her (or either of our) twitter lives.

You don’t get to pick your replacement. If that was her top priority she was should’ve resigned four years ago. There is plenty of hypocrisy in what the GOP is doing, but circulating that quote around is weak argument. And I love RBG as much as anyone.
I'll say 3 things about Jimmy Buffett:
~His early 70s music is highly underrated/appreciated
~He sold out early & HARD, but he did so in a way that ensured he & those who worked for him made the $, not corporations-ahead of his time
~He treated his band/staff extraordinarily well
Breaux Mart has lines taped every six feet in checkout. Fresh market gives you hand sanitizer at check out. Pizza Delicious has about 20 sanitation measures. Meanwhile Whole Foods still has a do it yourself salad bar and Rouses stopped passing out Clorox wipes w/ your cart.

When Obama left he rode on the plane that is usually used as AF1, but I think that was offered out of tradition/curtesy, not by right.
No way Trump should be allowed to use it to go to a rally
The look of entitlement on the faces of the frat-bros at Ole Miss & LSU….
The entitlement to never have their worldview questioned, to not have to encounter anyone who dares not look or dress or think like they do, to demand their university be a homogenous party zone.
Annual PSA for anyone who finds

too negative a way to end Mardi Gras day: Bourdain’s Parts Unknown Cajun Mardi Gras is a strong episode and a great way to ring out Carnival.
In Europe, in regions where communities are banding together to fight over tourism, many high end restaurants and shops give a *discount* to locals. We once had our alcohol comped at a restaurant just for living there “part” time.
To go the *opposite* is cultural warfare.
I have nothing against Chance in Hell Snoballs, and I *clearly* think the city was horribly wrong..... But "it takes a fancy, nouveau, hipster snoball stand getting shut down for transplants to wide care about neutral ground grills being shut down" is oh so on brand.

Don’t take a vacation in a pandemic if you aren’t prepared to respect local customs and decisions. Better yet, don’t take a vacation in a pandemic
13 years ago today I married a woman who can polish off a chef’s special omelette every time we go to Camelia Grill, in this photo while wearing an “In Lard We Trust”.
I have always boycotted Nyx so I don’t have any Wednesday to compare it to, but the route is more deserted than I’ve ever seen it even on the first weekend.
Super privileged people chasing the wreckage of a shipwreck that fascinates people largely because of wealth romanticism is not the *same* as kids spelunking, miners taking risks to feed their families, or refugees searching for a new life. And it's shameful to treat it as such.
The neoliberals insisted on charter schools which means almost no one goes to school in their own neighborhood. Well, they apparently don’t realize the byproduct of that is they *need* to cancel school for this kind of weather *every*time.
Took the kid to the zoo yesterday &he insisted we put masks on anytime near a cougar/leopard etc, because he saw a sign about how they could catch COVID, & he didn't want to risk giving them COVID. He's 10 & more aware of COVID impact on animals than 98% of americans are humans.

I'm not condoning this behavior by any means, but the fact you are apparently more horrified that a piece of art at your elite alma mater is destroyed than what is going on in Gaza, is precisely this young woman's point.
When your school sends out an email with talking points for what to tell your student because the middle school students are revolting against standardized testing........

Orgeron campaigned hard (for a sports coach anyway) for JBE. Orgeron being popular makes his endorsement matter more.
It’s sad that this is the world we live in. But it completely makes sense.
So, it's happening. For real. And I doubt they ever let me do this again. So spread the word to interested Nicholls students: a cross-listed literature and film studies course on Anthony Bourdain and his Influencers

I’m gonna go ahead and say it. Boheme is going to end up in my top 5 parades, maybe 3. I’m still in shock at how good that parade had gotten so fast. It’s hip and relevant and fun in the way KdV was like 20 years ago.
Proteus has the most beautiful floats in Carnival. And Orpheus has 2 or 3 of the most impressive (plus a crapload of bands)
And few crowds.
Lundi Gras is a magical night.
The next time you see someone calling Thoth honky or Chew hipster/transplant, don’t laugh, get mad. Because they are coming after all of them. Stop being petty. Our culture matters.
It finally happened after 22 years teaching. I forgot a class. Walked out of a class talking to a student, went back to my office, presumably to change books, sat down, started grading quizzes, and realized 40 minutes later I was supposed to go to another class. 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️

Highly intelligent also means highly trainable
Border collies & german shepherds are high drive, but mostly driven by intellectual stimulation, & if they get enough, + training (which is *also* intelectual stim), they don't tend to do this
In short, the owners need to do better

1) he’s being charged now 2) New York has much better laws on this topic 3) obviously race as well, but ignoring 1 and 2 doesn’t help your argument be effective.
Tulane students can be so awful at Carnival, it’s been a major conversation in our house. That said they aren’t much worse than the groups of LSU students and not nearly as bad as the Middle Aged chads from the north shore and Baton Rouge. It takes a village to ruin Mardi Gras.
And, yes, I get rescue obsession. I felt it with kids in the cave in Thailand & the Chilean miners. But the Titanic story ironically also feeds wealth obsession.
After years of making $ off Tulane operating Uptown + private gigs on campus, will
@creolecreamery
finally commit to a Tulane flavor if the

make the Cotton Bowl?
Could easily replace the flavor from that school upriver.....
I’m worried our Ida repair debt might keep us in debt for life, but our contractor (yet again) showing up and gifting us Honduran food out a smile back on my face for a bit. 🇭🇳
There is nothing more New Orleans than having to turn your AC on for five minutes (mostly for humidity) on an evening where it’s supposed to dip under freezing at night.
Our city is in love with *culture bearers* because they further a myth that disguises the reality that culture is created/sustained by large groups of people along w/ specific social conditions. Neoliberal gov’t prefers marketing bearers to tourists over sustaining the culture.

What a horrible world it’d be if we felt we didn’t owe each other anything, that standing for fairness wasn’t a duty. I have more respect for a baker who won’t bake than I do this opinion. At least the baker thinks they are doing what is right. Your stance cares only about you.
My 11 yo son, wife, and I each drove the container ship simulated at Vue Nola last month, and learned within a few tries how not to hit the Crescent City Connection. Given our expertise, let me begin a thread about Baltimore.....(1/976)

Let’s get this straight. Women explain to you behavior that seems creepy, so you decide to defend that behavior, then write a fictional sketch about an even creepier scenario? Got it
In no particular order, I'd easily take Guy's, Domileses, Lil' Dizzies, and Adams Street over it. As well as the aforementioned Gene's and Danny & Clyde's (both ain't dere no more).
I will, however, take Parkway over Parasol's or Tracy's (all three of which are good).

All y’all coming in from Metairie and colonizing the neutral ground? Sorry, no.
The incongruity of these two signs is symbolic of the gentrified hellscape The Channel has become. Heck, there is (I think) AirBnB “With love thy neighbor” porch pillows and an AUDIO RECORDING set to intimidate you when you walk by on the street “YoU aRe bEiNg REcoRdeD”

So people who aren't registered with either party should have to let those parties decide who they vote for?
I voted for Biden, and I don't think I'd ever consider a "write in", but limiting democracy so your candidate can win isn't a good look.
9 years and 8 days ago, we finished walking 500+ miles on the Camino de Santiago with a 14 month old. We bussed around the first four days because of snow. Tomorrow, we head back to St. Jean Pied du Port with a 10 year old to do the part we missed.
