TIME TO TELL MY MOM'S STORY: My Mom was born in Jerusalem in 1942 in what was then the British Mandate of Palestine to a Christian Palestinian father and a Jewish mother. My Mom has fond memories of her family's home in Jerusalem.

The dispossession and displacement of the Palestinian people and the subsequent occupation are the root cause of the conflict. That is the original sin. Acknowledging and addressing the root cause is a prerequisite for achieving a lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis.
My grandmother rushed the family next door to take refuge in the Notre Dame Church. My Mother's family were forced to flee their beautiful home in Jerusalem, never to return again. Think about the trauma that my mother and her siblings have had to live with their entire lives.
At the front courtyard of the house, there was a fountain with goldfish. The house was made of stone of a salmon color and the roof was red slate. It was a Mediterranean-style house. There were many fruit trees in the courtyard: lemon, almond, fig, and a fruit used for marmalade.
During one terrible night that is seared into my Mom's memory, the Zionist militia stormed into their house with machine guns. My maternal grandmother, who was in her nightgown, roused the children out of bed.
At that moment, the family's German shepherd, Lucky, jumped at the soldier with the machine gun to push him away from my grandfather. The other soldier shot the German shepherd. Lucky fell to the ground, looked at each family member in turn, and took his last breath.
She heard one soldier tell the other in Hebrew, "Kill the man, leave the woman." As the solider took aim at my grandfather, she yelled back in Hebrew, "Don't you dare! He's the father of my nine children."
In 1948, when a bloody civil war erupted between the Palestinians and the Zionists, my Mom was just 6 years old and unaware of the political upheaval occurring around her.
Thank you so much for your outpouring of support, both publicly and privately. It means more to my family and me than you know. This is a dark time but I firmly believe in the words of MLK Jr. that "the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice."

Good luck with your campaign Mr. Agwan. We need more principled representatives in Congress who refuse to be bought off by lobby groups like AIPAC.

Important to note that Israel encouraged the creation of Hamas as a counterweight to the PLO. Up until recently, Netanyahu had a deliberate policy of strengthening and financing Hamas to prevent a two-state solution.

My grandmother's family disowned her when she married my grandfather. They had a sitting shiva for her. My grandmother converted to Christianity and took the children to Church every Sunday.
Trump now has a 6 point lead among voters under the age of 30. If this isn't a wake-up call to Biden, then I don't know what is. I will say it one more time: The Biden administration must dramatically change course on Gaza, through actions not just words.

I cannot even begin to imagine what you and your family are going through. We are all thinking of you and praying for an end to this madness. ๐๐ผ๐ Wish there was more we could do to help. As MLK said, โthe arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.โ
@DrMichaelOren
Until the occupation ends, Israel cannot be considered a true democracy. 3 million Palestinians in the West Bank (not to mention Gaza) live under Israeli occupation and cannot vote to influence that regime.

A lasting peace with the Palestinians. There have been five wars in Gaza in the past 15 years and peace remains as elusive as ever. War is not the answer. It simply perpetuates the cycle of violence. There is no military solution to the conflict.

One of the most important things I learned in university is that if one believes that your side can do no wrong, and the other side can do no right, that is a clear sign of bias.

1 million women and girls have been forcibly displaced in

Half of them are now in

They are experiencing unbearable suffering, disease, and risk of famine.
We call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
Gaza's cultural heritage destroyed or damaged by Israeli airstrikes
1. Great Omari Mosque, Gaza's most iconic landmark dating back to the 7th century
2. Church of Saint Porphyrius, the third oldest church in the world

for using your voice and platform to speak up for human rights. For too long, Palestinians have been dehumanized - in the media, on TV and by politicians. The children of Gaza have hopes and dreams just like every other child on earth.

If a Hamas commander were hiding in an Israeli hospital, would the IDF be justified in bombing the hospital, knowing that it would lead to the death of at least 100 civilians? If not, why is it ok in Gaza?

The conflict has gone on for too long, with too many lives lost and too much pain and suffering on both sides. "Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only by achieved by understanding." Negotiations and hard compromises are the only way to achieve lasting peace in the Holy Land.
