Yesterday, I sent my letter of resignation as a board director to
@CMA_Docs
. As the national organization that represents physicians and medical learners in Canada, I am profoundly disappointed and appalled by their actions and behaviour.
Link to letter:
Over the past week, I had the privilege and opportunity to visit Rafah, Gaza to bear witness to an ongoing genocide, bring in essential medications and supplies, and provide humanitarian medical relief work in primary healthcare.
This is cultural genocide. The Canadian government has removed being born in the state of Palestine as an option on passport renewal process - and people are expected to accept being born stateless moving forward. This is anti-Palestinian racism.
Immediately as I entered the Senate of Canada, I was stopped. There was something wrong.
The security guard says to another: “I need you to approve the button”.
In comes another security guard and says with a blank stare: “It’s fine”.
Why does Israel drop tear gas bombs on people as they are praying during the holy month of Ramadan? Why?
Why does Israel occupy Jerusalem? Why does Israel occupy the West Bank? Why?
End this state violence. End Israeli apartheid. End the illegal occupation of Palestine.
Palestine is freeing us from any doubt that academic institutions serve the systems of oppression first and foremost, that of white supremacy, structural racism, and colonialism. Any sense of a facade has been completely shattered. There is no going back to the status quo.
Horrific images from Gaza, less than 24hrs old, of the unimaginable brutal killing of a human being by being run over by an IDF tank.
As much as I want to look away, we must not turn away. We are not the ones experiencing the genocide. We must bear witness, and demand justice.
Sigh. 😭 Gifted a parking ticket by the city after a 24 hr shift at the hospital. I’ll pay the fine because there are rules. But I wish these rules apply equally to the disruptive protestors in downtown, where I also live, causing ++traffic delays to get to the hospital. Irony.
I’m so impressed by the work of the lawyers and legal team representing South Africa. Doing what so many have failed to do, or were too afraid to do. Historic.
I don’t think Y’ll grasp what’s happening in South Africa🇿🇦. Black people that survived

went to become judges and lawyers.
And now defending Palestinians🇵🇸 against the country that sent South Africa🇿🇦 weapons during Apartheid!
We are living History!!!!!!…
All eyes on Gaza. Rafah is being bombed right now in the middle of the night. The Oscar’s is used as a distraction.
A stark reminder of the heavy bombing and massacre that happened overnight at 2am on Feb 12. The super bowl was used as a distraction. We entered Rafah that day.
What we witnessed in the primary care centres in Rafah, Gaza was the tip of the iceberg of the multiple overlapping crises of food, water, and housing insecurity. It is my opinion that these preventable crises are the material manifestations of a genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.
Peaceful protester wearing a pretend suicide vest at the

No big deal.

@JustinTrudeau
I feel so very inspired and empowered by my experience of meeting and spending time with the Palestinian people in Gaza. They have taught me so very much about the practice of humanity, compassion, and resiliency - while they are experiencing the unimaginable for most of us.
I’ve been receiving a lot of messages about how to best support & help the people in Gaza, such as through supporting the efforts of the medical delegations providing humanitarian medical relief that are entering or planning to enter Gaza including with in-kind & cash donations.
Children are being forcibly starved and dehydrated in Gaza. They do not have access to nutritious food and clean water. Aid is being withheld to enter. The conditions of unstable shelter, living in tents outside & crowding, have resulted in outbreaks of gastrointestinal disease.
We mourn and honour the lives of the healthcare workers and people killed by the genocidal campaign of Israel. Their depravity knows no bounds.
We must demand and fight for justice. For the lives that continue to hang in the balance. We will not rest until Palestine is free.
They killed my friend and colleague Dr Ahmad Maqadmeh at Shifa Hospital. A beautifull soul and a great surgeon. We worked together in the Great Marches of Return and the 2021 war and then this recent war. His dedication was unlike anything I have ever seen. We will never forgive.
I went to Gaza and worked on the ground alongside and with the support and guidance of the courageous and compassionate humanitarian, Dr.
@AlviFozia
. I have learned so much about her vision for a more equitable and just world through the lens of humanitarian medical volunteering.
This is genocide. Do everything in your power to stop this, and then do more. The systematic withholding of food and other aid to the people of Gaza is genocidal.
I was supposed to work at Nasser hospital in February. But it was attacked and under siege by the Israeli forces, and is now non-operational. These are clear deliberate attacks on healthcare. These are attacks on our collective humanity.
Ceasefire now. End this genocide now.
Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières
Canada was created as a colonial project on stolen land and the genocide of Indigenous peoples.
Canada remains complicit in the genocide and theft of land of other peoples around the world to this day.
Our collective struggles for liberation are bound with one another.
Selling other people's lands is theft
Whether done out of a church, mosque, synagogue, temple, or tent
Why is there silence in North America about it & no action to stop it?

This blood is on your hands,

You are complicit in this ongoing genocide. Shame on you for not doing everything within your power to stop this from happening.
1/2 I am horrified to hear reports of the IDF strike taking the lives of 7 World Central Kitchen employees in Gaza yesterday, including a Canadian citizen.
Airdropping aid is not a solution. It’s performative & harmful.
People have been killed by aid landing & crushing them. Aid has landed & now destroying healthcare infrastructure.
This madness must end. Open the land borders, let aid in, let food & water in. This is genocide.
This madness must end now. I wake up every day in Canada holding my breath for the next man-made tragedy inflicted on people in Gaza. This one hits close - I slept at the Emirati hospital when I first arrived in Rafah. I know the doctors and staff there. This genocide must stop.
What I found during my time in Gaza was communities and people that were finding ways to live and support one another despite all of the hardships they were facing. I am so incredibly humbled and grateful to have shared time and space with some truly amazing people in Gaza.
Really enjoyed hearing you speak on your pathway into public leadership and meeting you,

Here’s an example of the sounds of bombing that woke me up in the morning, while I was at the clinic in Rafah. Normally I heard bombing usually when it got dark out, but this morning I was startled awake because of the bombing. A paramedic and nurse were killed today at Emirati.
I have learned so much about unparalleled resiliency, kindness, and humanity from the Palestinians in Gaza who welcomed us in. They are experiencing the unimaginable. I am devastated for them, and inspired because of them. I will be sharing more in the coming days and weeks.

lost respect and integrity when they unjustly suspended Dr.

Let those who are complicit with genocide continue to show their blatant anti-Palestinian racism.
We will only grow louder and more steadfast. In our millions, in our billions. Free the people of Palestine. 🇵🇸🕊️
if Germany had just let this event go ahead in Berlin, this would have stayed local.
By cancelling the event and banning Dr

There is no good way to put into words what bearing witness feels like today, as we continue to witness genocide unfold by the photos & videos coming from the ground at Al Shifa hospital where over 400 bodies are being discovered & recovered after a two week long siege by Israel.
Rachel Corrie died 21 years ago to this day. I don’t know you and we never met, and sadly we never will in this lifetime because you were killed by an Israeli bulldozer, while protesting the demolitions of Palestinian homes.
Our team was initially tasked with working at Nasser hospital in Khan Yunis, Gaza. However, only a few days before entering Gaza, this assignment was changed due to the evolving security and access concerns at Nasser hospital due to the targeted attacks on healthcare workers…
On this Christmas Day, I’m reflecting on visiting Bayt Lahm (بيت لحم), the birthplace of Jesus Christ, in Palestine earlier this year. I bore witness to the violent occupation and the crime of apartheid against Palestinians by Israel.
I received multiple acknowledgments of thanks or a nod of appreciation from others throughout the day, about the button. This is why even the smallest acts of solidarity matter. Free Palestine.
Just a few of my colleagues in the north we all have been working tirelessly for the past 191 days. They are great, brave journalists on the ground who haven’t taken a single day off , amplify Palestinian journalists 🇵🇸

Shame on you,
@Atul_Gawande
. Our healthcare worker colleagues are being brutally murdered in Gaza, for simply caring for their patients. Your silence is complicity in this ongoing genocide. Your lack of ethics and professionalism as a doctor in the face of genocide is appalling.
Watch:
Yesterday, at a DC event on “the critical importance of supporting and safeguarding health workers,” USAID rep Dr. Atul Gawande struggled to respond when activists asked him to condemn the US-funded Israeli assault on Gaza, which has killed scores of health-workers.
We have failed, and continue to fail the people of Gaza.
We need to do everything within our power, as people and as communities, to put a stop to this madness and an end to this horror. Canada is complicit and aiding Israel in genocide.
Al-Shifa Hospital and medical complex had only recently restored partial healthcare services, caring for patients in northern Gaza. It was bombed and attacked throughout the night. Many casualties. There are reports of a ground invasion involving forced evacuation at gunpoint.
It pains me deeply to know that bombings are intensifying in Rafah now. It’s been said almost 3 months ago, that there is no safe place in Gaza. I had to check-in today to see if my colleagues & friends were safe & alive from the Emirati hospital bombing. I’m so worried for them.
I did not see anyone else’s buttons or pins be asked to be removed or taken off prior to entering the chambers.
Someone that I met while waiting in line to enter the chambers thanked me for wearing the button, and for at least trying to bring it into the chambers.
Later, I tried to enter the Senate Chamber with my button, which my friend Riam gave me right after I returned from Gaza into Egypt, but they wouldn’t allow my button in. They said it is “political” and they don’t allow “political” items or objects into the chamber.
Disgusting behaviour by many to spread misinformation on a protest about the ‘targeting’ of a hospital in Toronto. All the while I was in Gaza hearing the nightly bombing & shelling around healthcare facilities. Nasser hospital in Gaza was under attack and is now non-operational.
Join Jews Say No To Genocide and allies demanding hospital CEOs retract their inaccurate statements RE: last week's 'Hands Off Rafah' protest & issue an apology to Toronto’s Palestinian community & the thousands who marched calling for a

Here’s an example of the almost 24/7 sounds of drones overhead, an incessant buzzing noise that at times is so loud that you can’t think, can’t sleep, and certainly can’t forget about the oppressive feeling of being killed at any point by an airstrike. This was at the clinic.
Actions mean more than words,
@JustinTrudeau
. This blood is on your hands.
Israeli arms embargo now. Sanctions now. Demand an end to the illegal occupation of Palestine now.
My thoughts are with the family of Jacob Flickinger, a Canadian citizen who was among those killed in an Israeli airstrike on an aid vehicle. Killed while delivering food to civilians in need, his death is absolutely unacceptable.
At a time when humanitarian aid is so urgently…
This is what happens when Canadian politicians support and enable a genocide of people in Gaza. Shame on them. They are complicit in the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians and children. Power to the people. 🔥

: MSF staff in Nasser hospital report they can feel the ground shaking and that there is a sense of panic among staff, patients and displaced people sheltering inside the building.
We are soon going to see more Western mainstream media coverage report on the genocide and criticize Israel. The tides are shifting.
However, we must hold them accountable for the anti-Palestinian racism they upheld and perpetuated in their reporting that has enabled genocide.

The racist and defamatory post by

For hours people have told Conservative deputy leader

You are complicit in this ongoing genocide. Shame on you and your government administration for not doing everything within your power to stop this from happening.
Utterly appalled and deeply saddened by the news of an IDF strike claiming the lives of 7 World Central Kitchen humanitarian workers, including a Canadian-US citizen, as they heroically sought to deliver much needed food supplies to suffering Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
Over 170 United Nations staff have been killed, and over 340 healthcare workers have been killed. How much longer will Israel and its supporting nations like Canada and the United States continue to enable this genocidal campaign in Gaza?
My wish for 2024, is a Free Palestine. And medical learners are no longer targeted and silenced for their health advocacy and solidarity for health and human rights for Palestine.
I wrote to
@AFMC_e
yesterday about the integrity of the residency matching process and the targeting of medical students. As a past interviewee, file reviewer, and interviewer, I believe their statement is woefully insufficient.
My letter is here:
Students and young people are the moral compass for social movements. They have everything to lose, and yet they put it all on the line for humanity. Shame on the complicit genocide sympathizers and enablers that sit in their ivory tower institutions employing state violence.
At least 300 healthcare workers have been reported killed in Gaza, since early October this year. ❤️🩹💔
This is completely unacceptable. And against international humanitarian law that provides rules to protect access to healthcare in times of armed conflict.
Exactly this. 💯
My patience is running out for so-called health equity folks in Canada that remain silent out of racism, ignorance, or blatant disregard for certain lives in this world. While ongoing genocides unfold with the complicity of Canada.
The audacity.
Al-Shifa hospital in northern Gaza is under a fourth day of sustained attack. People executed. Healthcare workers kidnapped and detained. Patients left to die without care and support. Where is humanity?
🚨 Day 4 of the Al-Shifa hospital attack :
Israeli occupation forces have so far executed 150 young men in and around the hospital.
Israeli occupation forces have kidnapped over 300 civilians from the hospital, including doctors, nurses, journalists, and patients.

I’m so disappointed in the city of Ottawa. The right to peacefully protest is under threat in the nation’s capital city. $490 for using a megaphone? The silencing & intimidation to dissuade people for advocating for health & human rights for Palestine must stop. Shame on Ottawa.
I love Ottawa, but I’m disappointed in my city today.
Using a small megaphone to advocate for Palestinian human rights gets a $490 fine?
This has to stop.

Power to you, Dr. Ben Thomson. I’m proud to call you a respected colleague and friend.
@BenNephrology
has always centred health and human rights and just returned from Gaza.
Shame on the healthcare institutions that perpetuate anti-Palestinian racism.
There is no humanitarian solution to this man-made crisis inflicted by Israel on the people of Gaza. Children are dying of severe malnutrition every day now, due to the overlapping crises of food, water, and housing insecurity.
I closed my investment portfolio at MD Financial which is now owned by ScotiaBank. Here is my letter to my financial advisor. I also told him that the proceeds would be donated to Palestine.
The role of non-profit or non-governmental organizations & charities often falls into the space of filling the gaps of existing or exacerbated health and social inequities, often as a consequence of structural racism and discrimination upheld by the status quo of current systems.

I had the opportunity to discuss with Hallie Cotnam on CBC Radio’s Ottawa Morning, what I saw as a doctor in Gaza. After describing one of the patients I cared for, who was severely malnourished from being forcibly starved, Hallie paused, teared up, and was unable to speak.
Important interview from
@yipengGe
, the medical resident who was unfairly suspended from

for Pro-Palestine posts, documenting the horrors he saw while volunteering in Gaza to provide medical support to those affected by Israeli army bombardments.
You are complicit in this ongoing genocide,
@JustinTrudeau
. With your anti-Palestinian rhetoric and your government’s approval of military export permits. You facilitated and enabled this crisis in Gaza, that is being investigated by
@CIJ_ICJ
as plausible genocide. Shame on you.
For many, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza means the joy of Eid will not be felt the same as past years. Yet, the message of Eid – of charity and service to those in need – remains as important as ever.
May this Eid al-Fitr bring peace and blessings to you and your loved ones.

Demand justice for Asna. And demand justice for all students, learners, staff, and faculty members of academic institutions that wrongfully and unjustly experience anti-Palestinian racism and rhetoric. We stand with you.

It’s one thing to have differing political views. A very different thing to write, share, and amplify hateful content that discriminates, stereotypes, and dehumanizes Palestinians. This must stop.
As Canadian healthcare workers, we need to be able to talk about the attacks on healthcare in Gaza. This was a graphic shared with me by
@WHO
when I was on the ground in Rafah. There is a systematic campaign of targeting and attacking healthcare and healthcare workers in Gaza.
My friends and colleagues at Harvard university have faced and experienced horrifying acts of discrimination, harassment, and racism. The institution has failed to protect Palestinian, Arab, Muslim, and supporters of Palestinian rights. Power to the students. In solidarity.

Absolutely heartbreaking. 💔 I thought of the walks outside I would take alongside my brother - and I cannot even begin to imagine the suffering of being executed one at a time in the streets for simply existing. Palestinians are being denied the right to exist and live.
Heartbreaking moments captured the Israeli snipers targeting and cold-bloodedly executing the two young men, Amro Khalid Al-Fara and his brother Mohammed, while they were inspecting their demolished home in Khan Yunis city.
#GazaGenocide
History will judge poorly upon the university administrators who choose to vehemently side with an oppressive force committing genocide, rather than support their own students and learners with the moral clarity and ethics to demand justice and divestment. We will never forget.
“You should know better.”
Now is the time to act. Do everything within your power to act, to protest and to speak up, to bring an end to this genocide in Gaza.
A pleasure to meet you too, Margaret. I appreciated our wide-ranging conversation on anti-Palestinian racism, and on identity, power, and privilege. And to have the chat with

I've signed this letter from healthcare workers to the Canadian government for urgent action on the humanitarian and human rights crisis unfolding in Gaza. Please consider signing ASAP, it only takes a few minutes.
Healthcare workers in Canada: Please add your voice to/share this open letter calling for concrete action from our government in the face of the humanitarian and human rights crises in Gaza.
This open letter is now at 3591 signatories. There is safety in numbers and in community - we lean on one another, in solidarity. I am specifically so proud of the healthcare learners and trainees who have signed this letter.
Read & sign the letter here:
At least 20 of Gaza’s 35 hospitals are now non-functional, and those remaining open are facing a barrage of attacks, lack of supplies, and a ticking clock before they run out of fuel. Sign now! Share widely!
What solidarity work requires, I believe, is a confrontation of one’s own privilege and identity. And of course, how structural and internalized oppression also affects and limits how we can show up as our authentic selves.
It’s been over a month since I did this interview on February 26, 2024, a few days after I returned to Canada. Over these past few weeks, the conditions in Gaza have only gotten worse. This is genocide.
I had the honour and privilege of being in community yesterday evening in Ottawa hearing and sharing perspectives on the ongoing genocide in Gaza and moving forward through collective action and solidarity work.
This was the best news I heard today. The donations that Dr.
@AlviFozia
and I delivered to local partners in Gaza only a week ago, has already helped fund the first of multiple medical points for delivering primary healthcare to people that need it the most. Onwards and upwards.
Today was the official opening of the first medical point in the middle area - Al-Zawaida. Primary care services will be offered here. Funded by the generous donations people have entrusted to us to deliver tangible outcomes that directly benefit people on the ground in Gaza.
There are countless stories of healthcare workers being targeted, assaulted, arrested, tortured and executed. In this case, an orthopaedic surgeon who refused to abandon his patient that he was operating on.
This is what
@CMA_Docs
commits to remain “neutral” on. Disgraceful.
Please, read this.
This is what Israel is.
This monstrosity, the Western leaders want us to believe, is our ‘ally.’
We can choose our humanity, or we can choose Israel, but we can’t choose both.
We continue to call it a humanitarian crisis. But that assumes there are humanitarian solutions. There is no such solution right now in Gaza. No amount of humanitarian aid will solve this.
We need a ceasefire now.
Only then can humanitarian aid efforts meaningfully help Gaza.
The ongoing flour massacres continue during Ramadan. People are being killed for trying to access food aid.
