Oh, it's so much worse than y'all think.
Hawley works at the Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian Nationalist legal outfit behind so many of the cases that are dragging this country back to a time when conservative, white Christian men ruled everything.
But there's more...
Zero surprise that it was insurrection supporter Josh Hawley’s wife, Erin Hawley, who litigated the FAKE 303 Creative case in front of the Supreme Court. She’s as dishonest as her husband.
The Extreme Court used the totally made up case to illegitimately strip away LGBT+ rights.
Dick Durbin should not underestimate the value of ruining Sam Alito's summer vacation by holding televised hearings that would draw attention to his seditious flags, ethics abuses, abuses of power, and partisan hackery.
The court is kind of an important election issue.
Sen. Lindsey Graham: "The bottom line is - Conservatives are tolerant, we are kind of get out of your business, you leave me alone, I’ll leave you alone."
@Acyn
So this is a huge deal. The Appeal to Heaven flag was all over the insurrection and comes out of explicitly Christian Nationalist spaces. Sam Alito is professing his Christian Nationalism.
BREAKING NYT:
Samuel Alito — two years after flying an upside-down American flag outside his Virginia home — flew at his vacation home an 'Appeal to Heaven' flag, which, like the inverted U.S. flag, was carried by Capitol rioters on Jan. 6.
It appears to have been flown over
George Washington required the entire Continental Army to get inoculated against smallpox. It was the first army wide vaccination in history. Mortality dropped from 30% to 1%. Mandatory vaccinations just might have won America it's independence.
So no, Bryan.
The end of Roe was just the beginning.
They're coming for contraception.
They're coming for surrogacy and IVF.
They're coming for no-fault divorce (just ask Mike Johnson). And working mothers and single mothers and more and more.
They will not stop until we stop them.
I will not stop saying this until Christian Nationalism is relegated to the fringes of American society and discourse: Christian Nationalism is the single greatest threat to the American Constitution and our government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
He's telling his followers to arm themselves ("guard") and go into swing states (MI, PA, GA) and stop black people (cities) from voting. Not even sure these qualify as dog whistles it's all so—and it's what they'll hear. This is stochastic terrorism.
Trump: The most important part of what is coming up is to guard the vote, and you should go into Detroit, Philadelphia, and some of these places, Atlanta, and you should go into some of these places, and we have to watch those votes..
The 'Jesus Gets Us' ads you're going to see during the Super Bowl are being pushed by a billion dollar shadow network of Christian Nationalist groups that are doing real damage to this country.
Get and share the details here:
Despite Wheerler's unearned arrogance,
@HeidiReports
is absolutely correct. Rights given by a god can be taken away by men claiming to speak for that god. That's exactly the fight we're in now. That's what the Alabama Supreme Court just did with IVF. That's Christian Nationalism.
1952: National Day of Prayer
1953: National Prayer Breakfast
1954: “In God we Trust” put on postage stamps
1954: “under God” added to the pledge
1955: Prayer room built in Capitol
1956: “In God We Trust” adopted as national motto
1957: “In God We Trust” appears on paper currency
Abusing the machinery of the state to impose Christianity on every child in Texas is not religious freedom—it's a gross violation of religious freedom.
When you tear down the wall of separation between church and state, you trample the religious freedom of us all.
Allowing the Ten Commandments and prayer back into our public schools is one step we can take to make sure that all Texans have the right to freely express their sincerely held religious beliefs.
I will never stop fighting for religious liberty in Texas.
🚨This is alarming. Christian Nationalists are going after the Politico journalist who has done some critical reporting on the movement, including the dark money behind it. The goal is to muzzle the press on CN during an election year when it can swing the 2024 outcome.🚨
🚨We need to talk about this alarming pressure campaign that's happening right now. An attempt to muzzle discussion, criticism, and reporting on the authoritarian Christian Nationalism that is working against American democracy and a free press.

@briantylercohen
And just FYI, I'm a state/church lawyer and worked on reporting Locke to the IRS at
@americansunited
last week. I've been involved in helping enforce the Johnson Amendment for a decade or so and even debated the propriety of the rule a time or two.
Sam Alito, Leonard Leo, and their ilk should know this:
America will never be a Christian nation, because the moment it becomes a Christian nation, it will cease to be America.
If I read MAGA twitter correctly, a common move is to pick individual lines in the 98-page document, present them as the whole thing, and then say it's an outrage that the one thing is now being treated as a crime.
Christian Nationalism is trending, so it's a great time to remind everyone that CN is an entire identity based on disinformation:
America was not founded as a Christian nation. Our Constitution was not based on the bible or "Judeo-Christian" principles (whatever they might be).
Reminder: The US was not founded as a Christian nation nor based on Judeo-Christian principles.
If you want your religion to guide your personal choices, fine, but to impose your religion on all of us through the law (including law made by the Supreme Court), is un-American.
@briantylercohen
There's another possibility. Churches, unlike every other tax-exempt org in the country, do not have to formally receive such recognition from the IRS. Simply by claiming to be a church, they are tax exempt. It's an inequitable flaw and ripe for abuse, as
@LastWeekTonight
showed.
West Texas A&M's president banned a drag show, pointing to his personal religious beliefs. Today, I spoke to a wonderful crowd on the WT campus. "I’m here to tell you, whatever those men say, that you are right. And I will link arms and fight alongside you. In drag if necessary."
Here's the most important thing to remember about court packing: It already happened! Leonard Leo spent $540M (that we know of) to pack the court. You don't spend that kind of money to put impartial jurists on the bench. They bought the court. They packed it. It's gone.
Absolute 🔥🔥🔥 from
@ElieNYC
. Read it all. "We are entering a new Dark Age, one where, like the last one, science, education, and facts mean nothing, and Christian myths and legends are given the force of law."
Reminder: The bible says that Christmas trees are for heathens. Literally.
"Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen ... For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest ... They deck it with silver and with gold..."
Jeremiah 10:2-4
Hawley's husband, Josh (he of fist pump and fleet feet), taught ADF's fellows, cashing $$ in nicely.
But Josh wasn't the only teacher.
Amy Coney Barrett taught ADF fellows up until 2016 (and her recusal didn't even come up).
(📖 from American Crusade )
Pennsylvania state Rep. Stephanie Borowicz claims that 65 percent "of all of the founding documents" came "from Jesus' words and the Bible." We have no idea what she is talking about ... and neither does she.
Reminder that Mike Johnson is a virulent Christian Nationalist who pushed all kinds of hateful anti-LGBTQ bigotry while at Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian Nationalist legal outfit that wants to drag this country back to the 5th century.
This is the correct historical take. Or, in the words of former Chief Justice Berger, the Second Amendment “has been the subject of one of the greatest pieces of fraud—I repeat the word fraud—on the American public by special interest groups I have ever seen in my life."
I give zero credence to the claim that the US Constitution holds individual gun ownership as a fundamental right of citizens just like freedom of speech or religion. Ahistorical, partisan nonsense.
I think a lot of people don't realize that Christian Nationalists like Lee and Desantis are perfectly happy to destroy public schools. They then point to "failing public schools" as a reason to get kids into Christian schools with vouchers.
1000+ teacher openings in Tennessee… “alarming shortfalls every year” while we sit on billions in surplus funds…
We need y’all to realize hurting teachers/public schools is by design.
@GovBillLee
, Desantis etc. are privatizers hiding behind “choice”
Happy holiday that falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox, but is totally not a pagan celebration of fertility (with things like eggs or bunnies) and Spring, and isn't named after the goddess Eostre (estrous, estrogen) but is really about JC.
ADF, with Hawley actually arguing the case, is behind the mifepristone case being litigated before Judge Kacsmaryk in Texas (Kacsmaryk worked for one of ADF's brother orgs in the Christian Nationalist space.)
But there's still more...
Dear Americans,
No, our country was not founded on Judeo-Christian principles. Our Constitution was not based on your bible.
America is not a Christian nation. In fact, the moment we become a Christian nation, we will cease to be America.🇺🇲
Of course, when Barrett came before the Senate Judiciary when the Republicans were ready to steal another seat, Hawley helped get her through.
There's so much more, still.
The Hawleys met while working for . . . Chief Justice John Roberts.
But there's still more...
Yes, really.
Yes, the Colorado district court held a week-long trial on the question of whether or not Trump "engaged in insurrection." Trump's team put on witnesses and evidence. He did, as both courts found.
And yes, I'm a constitutional attorney. Right there in the bio.
Got to meet this absolute badass, today. In our respective talks, we nerds both used LOTR references to explain how the Supreme Court is weaponizing religious freedom. He brought down the house. Thank you,
@ElieNYC
!
Yes!
And yes, there were more than a thousand exhibits at the 5-day trial. Trump's team put on witnesses. Of course, Trump himself refused to testify because he's a coward.
The end of Roe is just the beginning. They are coming for contraception. They are coming for marriage equality. They are coming for basic LGBTQ rights.
The court's ultra-conservative bloc glorified "history and tradition" because they want to drag us back to the dark ages.
They have a deep Christian Nationalist history in the conservative legal movement. In what will be viewed by history as a dark turning point in our law, Hawley was intimately—and shadily—involved in the 2017 Trinity Lutheran case out of MO.
📖"It begins to look like collusion."
In the meantime
@Education4Libs
, maybe choose a different name? Because if you're asking questions that are this stupid, you're the one who's going to get schooled.
I've been fighting and educating about the threat this movement poses for more than a decade. This information is all out there. They're not really hiding it, we're just not paying attention.
If you want to understand WTF is happening now, I got you:
Vouchers began as a way to resist complying with Brown v. Board of Education; and tax citizens to support a religion that is not their own is deeply un-American.
Vouchers are just awful all around.
Liberty Christian School in Durham, NC got almost a million $ in voucher funding this year.
Liberty's primary educational objective is "to bring each student to a saving knowledge and relationship with Jesus Christ."
They should not be getting taxpayer funding.

Dear White Evangelicals,
We're not coming for your rights, we're coming for your privilege. You'll be able to worship as you see fit, so long as you don't (1) use gov't power to promote your religion, or (2) use your religion to violate another's rights.
Q: "What role does religion play in your life now?"
Martin Short: "No role. I'm not a big fan of organized religion. It's caused a lot of despair and prejudice throughout the world. Some people in aspects of organized religion do wonderful work, but overall I'm not a fan."
As you all know, I'm a constitutional lawyer with a serious job defending the First Amendment. And I just want to say to everyone...if you don't wear a mask, you're just a dick. Nothing more. A dick.
You're not a rebel or cool or in possession of some greater truth. Just a dick.
The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones.
Luke 16:10
Let’s talk about Amy Coney Barrett, not her religion, but her pattern of saying that when personal religion and professional responsibilities collide, her religious beliefs take precedence.
~a thread~
America has no religion.
And that's why every American has religious freedom.
This is Christian Nationalism and we can expect far worse if he takes power again.
As conservative Christians celebrate the Kennedy v. Bremerton decision and continue to push the "deceitful narrative" that the case is just about "public prayer," here's a reminder of what Jesus said about public prayer in his Sermon on the Mount:
"This is not a Christian nation. Our Constitution does not belong to the Christian nationalists. It belongs to We the People, all the people. And it’s about damn time we take it back."
I kicked off
#FFRFCon2019
with an exhortation on fighting Christian Nationalism. Here's a bit.
Hey
@EricTrump
,
Yesterday you said that "In God We Trust" is America's guiding principle and that Americans are "united on God." That's wrong. I wrote a short letter correcting some of your mistakes. Religion is divisive. That's why the constitution separates state & church.
Takes an oath to uphold the Constitution.
Signs a law she knows violates the Constitution.
Cites "god" as the reason.
This is what Christian nationalism looks like.
Today, I signed into law the Alabama Human Life Protection Act. To the bill’s many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians’ deeply held belief that every life is precious & that every life is a sacred gift from God.
I have been first on the scene at 2 rollover accidents. I could've prayed. Instead:
💔I did CPR on a dying 15yo girl ejected from a pickup doing 70+.
🔥pulled a guy from a car that was leaking gas and grabbed the keys from the ignition.
Shall I forgo action for prayer next time?
Separation of church and state is woven into the fabric of our republic. The founders, whatever they personally believed, knew that this separation was the only guarantee for true religious freedom.
Religious liberty cannot exist until we separate church and state.
Yesterday, the US broke 100,000 daily cases for the first time ever. 107,872, up more than 50% from two weeks ago.
1,616 people died in one day.
More Americans died of COVID this week than were killed on 9/11.
Which raises the question, Dave, what the fuck is wrong with you?
He named his anti-trans legislation after a Bible verse that promises a death sentence.
This is happening in your country. Right now.
And it's not his first Christian Nationalist bill.
I am not fucking having it.
"That act of the whole American people," Jefferson wrote of the First Amendment "buil[t] a wall of separation between Church & State." He said this was the "supreme will of the nation."
But sure, Bob.
“No one ever intended for church and state to be separated,” said Bob Linn, expressing support for Ryan Walters’ efforts to incorporate more Christian religion in Oklahoma schools.
As a constitutional attorney, I just want to say that upholding the Constitution is in no way an "unconstitutional maneuver" and upholding the law is not "illegal."
It's not anti-democratic to bar someone from office for committing anti-democratic acts, like insurrection.
I pledge to withdraw from the Colorado GOP primary ballot until Trump is also allowed to be on the ballot, and I demand that Ron DeSantis, Chris Christie, and Nikki Haley do the same immediately - or else they are tacitly endorsing this illegal maneuver which will have disastrous
I'm getting tons of questions about what happens if Trump dies before the election? Or after? Is it Pence or can GOP just pick anyone they want? 25th Amendment? And every possible variation of these Qs and more. I'm a constitutional attorney and I'll answer them all now.
THREAD
There is no freedom OF religion without a government that is free FROM religion. This is one reason the founders invented state—church separation.
Our Constitution does not belong to the Christian Nationalists. It belongs to We the People, all the people. Let's take it back.
Mike Johnson, House Republicans' new speaker pick, is anti-democracy, a top election-denier. He's also anti-choice and got his start in politics at a Christian Nationalist outfit that has been the subject of a few exposès recently: Alliance Defending Freedom.
Reminder that Mike Johnson is a virulent Christian Nationalist who pushed all kinds of hateful anti-LGBTQ bigotry while at Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian Nationalist legal outfit that wants to drag this country back to the 5th century.
A Colorado court held a trial that lasted 5 DAYS.
Hundreds of exhibits.
A 2,117-page transcript.
Trump put on witnesses and evidence and even rested his case early.
After that trial, the court found Trump "engaged in insurrection," which is what the 14th Amendment says.
Supreme Court decision days mean deterioration, retrogression, and even death for Americans. Today, the court eviscerated Miranda warnings and what was left of gun regulation.
SCOTUS isn't dispensing justice–it's rewriting the Constitution to fit the ultra-conservative agenda.
700,000 ballots were not allowed to be viewed in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh which means, based on our great Constitution, we win the State of Pennsylvania!
My new book, "American Crusade: How the Supreme Court is Weaponizing Religious Freedom" drops on 9/27. Thanks to
@UnionSqandCo
for this stunning cover!
So this is a fucking haunting detail:
The Insurrection Act allows the president to deploy US military domestically in limited circumstances.
That's Jeffrey Clark advocating a military coup.
Amazing that amidst all of the total destruction after the TN tornadoes, a police officer finds this Bible without a page missing, then crews find others.
“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” (Isaiah 40:8).
Religion shaming you for natural sexual urges is not a sex addiction.
It's religious manipulation, imposing shame and sin on a credulous person in a way that binds that person to the church and theology even more tightly because only the religion can absolve them of the "sin."
Osteen’s church grabbed $4.4million.
Daystar's lead televangelist took $4million and bought a jet.
Robert Jeffress took up to $5million.
Taxpayer dollars—you're funding their religious empires.
And it never should've happened. My latest for
@RDispatches
Christian Nationalists put "under God" in Pledge in 1954. Written by a Baptist minister, the original godless pledge revered "one nation, indivisible," until Christian nationalists literally divided the indivisible with religion.
The Democrats took the word GOD out of the Pledge of Allegiance at the Democrat National Convention. At first I thought they made a mistake, but it wasn’t. It was done on purpose. Remember Evangelical Christians, and ALL, this is where they are coming from-it’s done. Vote Nov 3!
A new ad from Republicans for the Rule of Law.
"John Bolton is a witness with first-hand information...Senate Republicans: Americans deserve the truth. Let Bolton testify."
