Spoken to 5 City financiers in past 24 hours who are all Tory voters. All have said they are going to vote Labour at the next election because the Conservatives cannot be trusted with the economy. All beneficiaries of the abolition of the 45p rate. Feels like an inflexion point.
Just arrived in Italy to take the temperature here post-election and have seen an interesting response to this tweet. I speak to financiers all the time. The tide of opinion based on my conversations seems to be moving against the Tories as I will discuss on

Really mature, robust and engaging discussion with
@OwenJones84

@JeremyVineOn5
this morning. We disagree on increasing pensions in line with inflation but the bigger point we do agree on is that the wealthiest should pay more tax. I as a capitalist get that.
The Tory candidate
@DrNShastriHurst
is a thoroughly decent man who deserved to be in Parliament. Utterly shafted by the seismic incompetence of his leader. A lot of Tory MPs will be choking on their turkey this Christmas
#northshropshirebyelection
@Fox_Claire
I agree. But economics may trump cultural issues and even Brexit. If the interest rate on your mortgage rises to punitive levels as a result of an un-costed government plan it focuses the mind.
PMQs was totally unedifying yesterday. I would suggest leaders in public life revisit the Nolan principles: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership. We are very very short of what we deserve.
Wishing everyone a happy new year full of civilised and robust discussion where people are not cancelled for simply expressing a view that some may not agree with.
Feels like the latest party revelations mean that the net is closing in. How much longer can this distraction from the serious business of government continue?
#DowningStreet
At least
@vincecable
is honest that a Norway style deal means you essentially remain within the EU with no say on the rules. Why can’t the Labour Party be as honest?

Great to be on

What is right wing about

@Iromg
It doesn’t make much difference if interest rates have to go up to support the pound and the BOE has to print money to buy bonds (which is inflationary) on the back of an inept fiscal statement that has been ill thought through.
Economic credibility takes years to establish and a moment to lose. Remember Black Wednesday in 1992. The Tories paid dearly in the 1997 wipeout. A lesson the current Tory government would do well to reflect on.
Hamza Yousaf just elected as SNP leader. Add to that an Asian Labour leader in Scotland, an Asian PM for the U.K. and and Asian Mayor of London. Black Foreign secretary and black shadow Foreign Secretary and a third Asian Home Sec. Britain must be a racist country:)
There is something to be said for diligence, focus on detail and negotiation in good faith. Unfortunately none of these traits were displayed

Fascinating discussion on the death U.K. nightclubs in the last hour of this morning’s show on

. I mentioned this piece which I wrote about my love of House music which you may enjoy
Back in the studio with

whose analysis of the Russia Ukraine situation is honest and refreshing. Too much of our analysis is simplistic. We have to understand how we got here.
A real honour to be representing the Worshipful Company of International Bankers as Junior Warden in Lord Mayor’s show alongside the Master, other Wardens and Liverymen in the parade for my dear friend Professor Michael Mainelli who is the 695th Lord Mayor of the City of London
Great fun to be on
@JeremyVineOn5
with

who is a class act even though we disagree on a lot of stuff. Binge drinking, whether grammar matters and if the Chris Pincher affair is the last straw for the PM were all discussed. Insightful calls as well.
Pleasure to deliver the
@DebatingMatters
Christmas lecture - “Against conformity - why debating matters” yesterday evening. touched upon debating being key to avoid groupthink, to increase understanding towards those that have a different point of view, and to enhance discourse.
The rise of “cancel culture” and the suppression of debate is a serious issue for our society. Given that backdrop, it is even more important that Contrarians speak out

Next time we hear what an institutionally racist country Britain is, just consider the slate of likely candidates for the Tory leadership, unlike the line-up in last Labour leadership contest:)
Great to talk about the government’s plans to encourage re-wilding of the countryside on

There is a lot to think about and reflect on at the moment, particularly in relation to the horrific attack at London Bridge.
I will be on

Please tune in if you can.
Putting up decent ministers such as Ed Argar to defend the government on a day like this is painful. I am afraid it is the PM that should be giving the interviews
#DowningStreetParties
First ethnic minority PM, four ethnic minority Chancellors, three ethnic minority Home Secretaries and an ethnic minority Foreign Secretary. What other Western country has this diversity?
Looking forward to being on

this morning with

This is a flavour of what went down

You can listen to my conversation with

today (Sun 7 Oct) about my article about the lack of any sensible discussion on immigration in City AM being blocked by Facebook. It was at the end of the programme in the last 5 minutes or so.
Interesting that

Great debate on Brexit at the Battle of Ideas festival at the Barbican this weekend. Privileged to be a part of it. Audience very insightful and switched on as always. Next stop Zürich next weekend!

Powerful and emotive speeches in Parliament yesterday. But we are no longer a great power and our impotentence without the US security umbrella is evident.
For my analysis you can do so here. Fast forward to the final hour of the show.

All set to speak at the Battle of Ideas festival about my favourite protest song “talkin bout a revolution” by Tracy Chapman. Let’s rock this.

The Queen is pure class. Stoical, on point, always captures the mood and leaves something for us to reflect on. Thank you for your service. We are grateful.

Might also want to reflect that if Lee Mack is opening proceedings by taking the piss out of partygate it’s really time for backbench Tory MPs to act.
1/2 When I look at Western leaders I see a group wholly unprepared to deal with 19th century style great powers who ruthlessly pursue their interests. Which of our leaders is schooled in geopolitics. Which of them has read von Clausewitz, Sun Tzu and Hedley Bull?

When it’s the Labour Party that is sounding sensible and responsible on tax and spending and the government is coming across as profligate you know you are in new territory.
PM addressing a busy Conservative Home reception. She is sticking to the message she gave on the Laura Kuenssberg show this am. Grumbles amongst some of the MPs I have bumped into here so far, particularly over the reduction in top rate of tax. Will it get through Parliament?
I would like to declare that I am really excited about the Platinum Jubilee. The Queen is a remarkable figure and has dedicated her life to public service. So happy she is coming to the City on Friday for lunch with the Lord Mayor. Very fitting.
