When I wrote 'I Find That Offensive!' few yrs ago, sketching out regressive trends associated w Identity Politics, statue toppling, 'You can't say that' culture, critics accused me of setting up straw men. In truth, I underestimated how toxic it'd become:
Whole trans-identity ideology skewered in a mere 1, yes 1, minute. And all deliverd through the prism of an exasparated ridiculing of 'old fashioned', 'dinosaur' women with wombs, like me. I own up. And I laughed. Kudos to
@rickygervais
for this.
Disappointing. Are we to conclude that censorship and police raids of public events, featuring political opponents, are a cause for giggles on Labour front bench? Hardly reassuring for the future of UK democratic debate
Why I like Jenny Harries: she gives detailed, non defensive replies. She treats media questions, however banal/simplistic/repetitive, w calm & sophistication. In turn she treats us, the public, as grown ups who can cope with complexity. Sadly most of these journalists don't/can't
As a non-Tory voter, can I just note this condescending attitude to honest and decent voters may well be one explanation for results we're seeing and means they might do well.
Those saying Whitty and Vallance gagged, now hopefully embarassed by they themselves saying don't want to be dragged in. Why would they want to get embroiled inCummings row on either side. Tuth is, journos trying to use scientists as stage army to batter Johnson. Cheap tactic.
It's hard to see how policing by consent survives this sort of police intervention. Understand it's Sturgeon's call but politicians risk jeopardising meaningful law & order enforcement when policed asked to enforce such OTT regulations and treat citizens in this way.
You're bloody marvelous British voters. Your resilient insistence that you own democracy & your grab back of the levers of power by using GE to shout Brexit Brexit has forced even Guy Verhofstadt to hear you. Love it. And proud of role
@brexitparty_uk
played in making it happen
Brexit will now happen. The British people have confirmed their referendum decision of 2016. The EU must now focus on building a new close, fair and lasting partnership with Britain. It is in our common interest.
Press conference lobby journalists carry on their fine tradition of last 9 months demanding Lockdown measures are harder, embroilvmore people and won't be happy til everyone is in tier 4. This isn't holding politicians to account, it's a partisan campaigning media; IMO a disgrace
There should be a public health trigger warning before Susan Michie is THE expert
@BBCNews
decide to interview following one of Boris's press conferences. Her worst-case scenarios & shrill demands for more,more,more restrictions etc are enough to increase national blood pressure
Keira Starmer supports government, only criticism that he didn't announce it on Wednesday. He worries about heart-breaking announcement today, as though it wouldn't have been heartbreaking on Wednesday. Labour as an opposition is so dire.
This is not the main complaint about daily press conferences that I hear from public / viewers tbf. When we all shout at TV from our lockdown sofas, it's not "where are the women?", it's "stop playing gotcha"; "where are the intelligent, probing questions?"
This letter/petition from Eton pupils to their headmaster, challenging the sacking of one of their teachers for a filmed lecture containing ideas that were deemed intolerable, is a masterclass in rigorous critical thinking. The pupils have my full support.
This from
@danwootton
takes a lot of courage. Regardless of what you think of
@GBNEWS
, attempts at its destruction, vicious demonisation of its employees & even firms who advertise on it, (often from other journalists), is a disgraceful & intolerant betrayal of media diversity.
'There are dark forces out to try and take this brilliant channel down. And that’s because GB News is the biggest threat to the establishment in decades, and they will stop at nothing to destroy us.'
@DanWootton
BBC admit distinction between dying WITH and OF Covid. At long last. Not sure it merited a major journalist investigation when so many have explained this over many months. But still good that these issues are being clarified more broadly
With no irony, discussing alleged white privilege on BBC, these 2 young women disparagingly caricature anyone who doesn't follow script, as Karens. How is this smug elitism a constructive contribution to anti racism? Drips of condescension to everyone. This stuff's so divisive
It is the utter gut-wrenching dread of it, sitting on our sofas, waiting for our fate to be handed down to us by God-like technocrats and our freedoms trashed. Powerlessness is the very worst of feelings.
I have to say
@afneil
programme on
@GBNEWS
is becoming appointment TV. Each and every item tonight was investigative, insightful and unmissable. (So enjoy much deserved break but come back soon).
Off to
@SussexUni
this evening to speak at an event organised by
@Liberate_Debate
Sussex. We must have the courage to defend
#freespeech
and academic freedom - for
@Docstockk
and every other person who’s been threatened or silenced for voicing their views. Wish me luck.
At one stage tonight, Fiona Bruce scolded
@IainDale
- "it's not your show". I sort of wish it was as he'd be a far better moderator. Poorly chaired tonight & utterly frustrating to watch even beyond political sides. Btw Iain, when you were allowed to get a word in, you were great
Many of you on here have been brilliantly supportive about me standing for
@brexitparty_uk
- so cheers. Some are still curious about what eventually made me decide to throw my hat in electoral ring. Short answer: David Lammy's "worse than Nazis" comment:
No longer just performative philistines. Real life, self-indulgent, nihilistic destroyers of art and history. What an insult: narcissists hiding behind the Palestinian cause to indulge in their own regressive, visceral culture war to declare they are virtuous activists. Look at…
Masked Palestinian activist completly DESTROYS historic British painting by slashing it with a knife and spray painting it.
The activist from the Palestine Action group ruined the Lord Balfour painting in Trinity College, University of Cambridge using a box cutter Stanley knife…
Extraordinary. Have just watched SNP/ LP/ LibDems on
#Newsnight
discussing an effective coup against gov, in complete contempt of electorate & democracy. No shame, argued in open without embarrasment, simply squabbling re who'll lead it. I shouldn't be, but shocked
@BBCNewsnight
Well at least it's clear what we're up against in North West. All 3 LP MEPs full Remain anti-democrats who want 2nd ref. What a bloody insult to Labour Leavers & to anyone who believes in popular sovereignty. Vindicates why I decided to stand as NW candidate for
@brexitparty_uk
Clear message on second vote signed by all 3 North West MEPs. Myself
@WajidKhanMEP
&
@julie4nw
. Nearly 90 MPs and MEPs demand Labour backs second referendum in Euro-elections
"Other appointments will be postponed". Easy to say as a casual aside. But I'm afraid as always there'a no risk-
benefit analysis (not available now; never available). So this doesn't tell us postential misery, fear, delayed diagnosis & (for some) acute pain, that this will cost
Heavy-handed face-covering patrol at Euston tube barking at & blocking way of passengers. I was wearing one anyway, but intimidating & unpleasant. What a horrible atmosphere this public health policing creates. Nothing normal here & should never be allowed to become new normal
These now regular stories of petitions used to get people fired, scare hell out of me. Crime: writing an "insensitive" blog critical of BLM & refusing to apologise. Regardless if agree with content, is this now a sackable offence? New form of McCarthyism?
Personally , I've now reached a point where I believe breaking the law for the climate is the ethically responsible thing to do .

@Channel4
"Not in the mood". Hmm. But seriously, when MPs decide it's not the mood to debate and vote on such crucial matters of democracy and liberty, we may be sure it will darken the mood of voters.
Commons will not vote on extending the coronavirus act for six months. Deputy speaker says it’s not the mood of the House to vote on the issue, so it passes without a division
Much later on (at almost 2am!) I made my last speech of evening, defending single-sex wards in health-care settings. The usual toxic atmosphere was present by the end, along with a smug dismissal of women's concerns by too many on the opposition benches.
Tired after spending an evening with a few democratic friends. To all those colleagues and mates I didn't see last night, this photo may explain why. Wow. Now the democratic reboot needs to begin.
'Islamophobia' now can include everything from bigotry to criticism of Islam or even Islamism. I asked the minister why many politicians refused to support the teacher at Batley Grammar School, was it for fear of being labelled Islamophobic? What does this mean for
#freepseech
?
In a short debate on regulation of news broadcasting, I did a critical defence of
@GBNEWS
, who so many seem to want to regulate out of existence. I also challenged the presumption that other channels - like the BBC - are bastions of impartiality, using bias on Israel coverage and…
Just made an angry speech in the Lords - I was so wound up by Labour peers defending the electoral commission (and using the bravery of Ukrainian citizens to justify their position). I reminded them of their betrayal of Brexit voters - their love for democracy was lacking then...
This is disturbing.That this young woman is genuinely distressed because adults have projected eco catastrophism onto youth so they lose their minds. That she feels so entitled to cry & threaten us: we must all do what SHE demands, so much so that she comes over as an angry bully
Saying just a few more weeks in a jaunty voice, granting exemptions to weddings & wakes as though medieval indulgences: in truth carelessly smashes hospitality/airline industries & SOCIAL confidence. How dare Whitty boast of vaccine efficacy then ignore in relation to freedom.
Sometimes those with gender critical views are accused of using caricaturing smears to discredit Stonewall. No need sadly. See here, advising nurseries and schools to acknowledge "Children as young as 2 recognise their trams identity". Yuk. Leave those kids alone.
Research suggests that children as young as 2 recognise their trans identity. Yet, many nurseries and schools teach a binary understanding of pre-assigned gender.
LGBTQ-inclusive and affirming education is crucial for the wellbeing of all young people! 🌈
I have refrained from commenting on
#bbcqt
but riled up by end row to note, if Layla is face of liberalism, it is screwed. Her mean-spirited, hectoring approach to her opponents while being incredibly self-satisfied, is pretty unendearing. Her illberalism brandished with pride.
Hurrah. Lovely feeling that Plan B & Covid era's most destructive anti-social measures are ending. Quite a fight. Yes, mandated vaccines still must go. But let's pull together energetically to REBUILD social ties, kick-start economy, repair damage, put LIBERTY on firm footing
Keir Starmer promised to make it a crime to 'misgender' - and yet very few politicians seem able to talk about what a woman is. I asked the minister to ensure that women's rights would not be sidelined by a focus on gender identity.
When Brand & Ross suspended for vile radio prank many of us cheered BUT didn't campaign for BBC to be shut down. Appalling behaviour on air should be disciplined. But politicians using
@GBNEWS
saga as excuse for dictating who TV should platform IS a call for media censorship
"These people need to be kept off the air"
Former PM Gordon Brown responds to the suspension of two GB News presenters and says 'you can't allow people to appear on air and talk about women in that way'.

Several of us tonight used what is merely a technical nod through of the Coronavirus Act in the House of Lords to make some comments on the use and abuse of legislation... (1/5)
How sick is this? If you're homeless it's horrendously hard to get straightforward medical treatment. Then there's the small matter of homeless not having homes. Yet somehow, miraculously, accommodation is made available as a bribe for vaccines. Grim way to prioritise need IMO
Predictable, dangerous & totally unnecessary based on original justification for this draconian 'emergency' legislation. Wherever one has stood on COVID meausres over last 18 mths, clearly no longer an emergency now. As many MPs/Lords should vote against & speak out as possible.
Face masks in the classroom are clearly nonsensical (in the prime minister's own words) so why isn't there more pushback on this? And what about the confusion of face-to-face teaching in masks - you can't assess children's progress without seeing and engaging with their faces...
Earlier today I explained why it's a problem when schools invite in third-party providers (eg Stonewall or campaigns advocating Critical Race Theory) and then deny parents access to materials... (1/2)
Let me tell you, if
@BrexitMeps
had burst into song, and been disruptive, we would have been kicked out. Indeed when we cheered
@Nigel_Farage
for his speech & some waved flags, we were reprimanded severely and told to leave. Everything about this place reeks of double standards.
Pushkin Square, maybe less than 1000 meters from Red Square and the Kremlin, is the cite of a significant protest. These people know the risks of challenging the regime. They’re on the street in-spite of major personal costs.
It's the brazen nature of it; the boast of happily aiming to manipulate audiences and shape public's behaviour; big media openly flaunting its own lack of even faux impartiality. But at least now in clear sight.

This sort of policing understandably annoys people: aggravates sense of unfairness. Police protecting BLM events while threatening others to get in line or else, stirs divisions/grievances. One law for activists w 'correct' views v one law for plebs will damage anti racist cause.
We'll be in attendance to facilitate a planned Black Lives Matter vigil at Keel Square in

tonight.
A Section 14 order is in place forbidding any other public assembly, including counter-protests, to ensure the public's safety. Anyone with concerns should ring 101.
This is NOT what happened. The amendments would be used against us all, much more a power grab post-Covid laws of giving all power to state to decide when, where, who can protest, were completely disportionate & ignore fact already laws that can be used but police don't use them
Last night Labour blocked the Government from introducing new measures to stop Insulate Britain & XR bringing our country to a standstill.
Once again Labour’s actions are proving they are not on the side of the law-abiding majority - instead choosing to defend vandals and thugs.
BBC now reporting it's seen evidence of Hamas raping/murdering women on Oct 7th. Tempting to ask where they've been. But I'm relieved. Gaslighting by much of media, casting doubt while horror in plain view, has felt like infuriating act of AS intimidation
FGS, was it negligent they were allowed to get

I saw & listened to this delightful well dressed gentleman preaching the Gospel on Friday in Uxbridge centre.
@metpoliceuk
please explain why it is an offence to preach Christianity in London?
Genuinely gobsmacking. Asking if Israel releasing more prisoners than Hamas releasing hostages means Israel thinks Palestinian lives worth less? Vile accusation but also a stupid/ignorant one. Suspect even most craven Israelophobes would be embarassed to ask it. Come on

Gov's uncanny ability to pick its timing to ruin every possible joyous occassion, is something that'll stay with me. Christmas cancelled; holidays cancelled; weddings/family parties cancelled. Now any possible joy on lacklustre freedom day ruined by vaccine passport announcement
"Proof of a negative test will no longer be enough"
UK PM Boris Johnson says that after all over-18s have had the chance to get both Covid jabs, full vaccination will be required for entry into "nightclubs and other venues where large crowds gather"
Paul, what a bloody vile conclusion - bile & bigotry re millions of voters. You're are turning on/blaming electorate. Again. Precisely why your Lab supps have turned from you. Modern-day version of Brecht lampooning those who suggested dissolving electorate when it disobeyed.
BBC exit poll predicts Tories to take 70+ seats. If so - a victory of the old over the young, racists over people of colour, selfishness over the planet. Scotland will leave UK. However it does not feel right compared to on-the-ground.
"He's not a man to be trusted" says Starmer, whose Labour Party has made a fine art of betraying public trust, on Brexit of course and now on democracy itself. So scared of electorate they won't support the general election they've been demanding incessantly for months & months
Crucial action in face of racism? Or anti-democratic gathering of unelected to cleanse the public realm of symbols that some have decided offend diversity? God knows, London has serious live problems to confront. So why prioritise inanimate historic statues? Lazy, philistine spin
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has formed the Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm which will review statues and landmarks across the capital to ensure they reflect the capital's diversity.
This is a Labour Councillor. He is: a) urging criminalisation of pupils for allegedly scuffing a book; b) by word 'desecration', implies this is a special,untouchable book & damaging it is an act of blasphemy. Consequences - stirring up community tensions. So much for tolerance
This is totally cruel & unnecessary. Not everyone had finished their Christmas present shopping, esp those front-line workers who've worked their guts out for months. Normal shops were closed abruptly with no notice. Now this. What'll Welsh do for kids' extras etc? FFS Drakeford
This Year, Islamophobia Awareness Month comes at a troubling time for Muslims in Britain.
Labour, with
@Keir_Starmer
as Leader, is committed to working closely with all communities to ensure they have the security they need to feel safe.
I mean, at what point does 'crying wolf' wear off? Word of warning to SAGE & deferential supporters: if this catastrophising/ scare-mongering carries on, no-one will ever believe/trust scientific expertise again. Is this result you really want? Stop with passive-aggressive fear!
I gasp at the double speak. From a mayor who's pestered & pestered to increase restrictions in London. Now reactes against consequences & blames government. Tories have plenty we should hold them to account for, but Labour can't squirm out of taking responsibility for this one.
London’s nightclubs and night-time economy were thriving before COVID-19. As the Government impose new restrictions on London, I’m also calling for additional targeted support to help these vital businesses survive.
Nervous about tonight's results BUT whatever happens this
@brexitparty_uk
election campaign has been a magnificent show of solidarity. Radical democrats from across political & social divides have come together to CRY FREEDOM. Inspirational people. Politics as it should be. A joy
All the best of our life today has been fashioned through and by democracy. Wise words from my heroine Sylvia.
Vote for democracy on Thursday.
@brexitparty_uk
I don't accept that a vote for
@brexitparty_uk
= a vote for Corbyn. Telling ALL leavers to vote Boris means trusting Tories to deliver Brexit. After 3 & half years of that not happening, an awful lot of trust required; at v least Conservatives need to be under pressure to deliver
I think it feels worse that Boris has nerve to use language of freedom while betraying it, talks of respecting/trusting citizens, while robbing us of any agency (threatening us w state force if we don't obey). He then dares to demonise any objectors as selfish. Yep, doublespeak
When Boris assured us that no-one would be forced to vaccinate, he forgot to add, "but if you don't, you will be effectively prevented from being part of the public sphere, ever". Public shaming next? I want to be an enthusiastic advocate for vaccines. This COERCION doesn't help
Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi suggests Brits who dont have a jab could be banned from cinemas and the footie. "I think you’ll probably find that restaurants and bars and cinemas and other venues, sports venues, will probably also use that system"
I deplore hounding of ALL 'rule-breakers' (as if being free to use one's judgement is a sin): hate way police & media have humiliated ordinary people OR clamour against advisers across political spectrum. Whatever you think of Cummings, public shaming such as below = despicable,
To FBPE tweeters cramming my TL w abuse/ demanding itemised Brexit benefits (still don't get it): Yes, many Leavers anxious Deal will fudge full sovereignty. But however unhappy, this isn't Brexit regret. Brexit now a reality. You need to accept it or you'll drive yourselves mad.
Just answer the bloody question. This cowardly evasion & inability to straightforwardly deal with the cervix issue is driving me and millions of women mad.
'Biology is very important, but we've had a system now in our country for many many years in which people can change gender.'
Boris Johnson spoke to Darren McCaffrey following Keir Starmer's comment that it was wrong to say 'only women have a cervix.'

On top of one of Europe's most draconian pieces of hate-speech legislation, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar's only response to last nights
#DublinRiots
is more hate-speech laws. ALWAYS MORE CENSORSHIP. Ironically, most of the venomous hate on display is from Irish politicians & media.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says he is aware of similar protests 'being organised online' and pledges to 'modernise laws against hatred'.

Opposition benches pushing for Plan B, more Lockdown-like restrictions, masks & scaremongering citing experts. I asked the house, which experts? What about non-Covid health costs & collateral damage? My first 'jumping up' question - bloody nervous & garbled but you get the gist.
Fact check:
@KemiBadenoch
is NOT anti trans. I'm disgusted too. That she's smeared for merely commissioning
#CassReview
& challenging a narrow brand of gender identity ideology, which does no favours for trans people but does lots of damage to women's rights & young girls' lives
An increase in Covid cases has turned opposition parties into a baying mob - demanding more restrictions (like masks). This repeat assault on liberty is more frightening than the virus. I made a plea for care-home residents not to face further lockdowns - minister responded well.
It feels even worse to me that Boris is presenting these decisions as courageous, as though this is an example of leadership. I commended him for allowing a smidgen of judgement & common sense last week, for trusting people. He's destroyed that now & destroyed any trust in him
Just on the inflammatory language point, do comments such as two below, regular features on my timeline, count? Not trying to play a competitive 'my insults worse than yours' game, but worry when it becomes routine to use Nazi/fascist as way of delegitimising views of opponents.
Guy, I agree. Hope you will also be as warm about dissidents making a stand for democracy & freedom closer to home.

come to mind. Yes, Europe is watching. Sadly EU doesn't seem able to see what's in plain sight. But we see you. Clearly.
Hate crimes spiked after
@BorisJohnson
& his Leave campaign spewed fear & xenophobia throughout the UK.
Now that he’s PM, we’ll have to fight everyday against this influence spreading any further. Silence isn’t enough--we have to speak against his hatred and his fear-mongering.
NB this was a request from civil service not any minority group. This sort of mad, diversity directive is divisive & it does opposite of its stated aim: it doesn't help community relations but threatens to damage social cohesion. In truth, everyone in UK wants a happy Christmas
God this is so depressing/predictable from Labour, ironically whipping up fear while saying don't let fear win; smearing
@brexitparty_uk
as far right & refusing to say ANYTHING positive. Ironically
@brexitparty_uk
is generating hope, optimism & excitement amongst Labour voters
I supported an amendment last night which, in part, aims to remove the ability of male prisoners who identify as trans but have convictions of violence or sexual offences against women to live with female prisoners... (1/4)
