Just an observation about the media:
We’ve gotten dozens of request from political reporters asking to be connected with veterans who became right-wing extremists.
But we’ve gotten zero interest in the perspective of POC troops who had to cope with extremists in their units.
A 52-year-old Navy SEAL was accepted to Yale and expected to find “snowflakes” and “safe spaces.”
Instead he found it was the people who mock college students who are sheltered, brittle, and close-minded.
Worth a read, and consistent with my experience.
Something missing from the conversation about student debt is the political history of why it exists.
College used to be effectively free or minimal cost, then Nixon’s administration determined that college students were a organized base of political opposition to Jim Crow/war.
‘So the self-published YA author who said that ‘reading books is ableist’ turns out to have been a neopotism hire at Lockheed Martin,” I say to my therapist when she asks me how my Twitter addiction is going.
There’s a weird thing where Veterans vote like 55% for the GOP 45% for Dems, but the media thinks Veterans are like 90% GOP and therefore refuse to cover any Vets identifying as left-leaning because they think it’s “not representative,” thereby contributing to the misperception.
Nixon encouraged the GOP in states to defund public colleges, in order to make future cohorts of college students become forced to take on debt, under the theory that political activism for Civil Rights etc would feel more risky for indebted students who had more to lose.
@yhdistyminen
The population density within the vicinity of the Pyramids of Giza is not sufficient to maintain large scale housing development anyway and it is unlikely a free market developer would choose this location for an apartment complex without government incentivized malinvestment
The dissonance over Pete Buttigieg is not difficult to explain.
He was presented as the candidate of generational change, but his actual policies were not that of young people, they were of the age-50-something suburbanite median Dem.
The United States just spent Two Trillion Dollars on Military Equipment. We are the biggest and by far the BEST in the World! If Iran attacks an American Base, or any American, we will be sending some of that brand new beautiful equipment their way...and without hesitation!
Periodic reminder that “Right of Return” isn’t about some generalized abstract “wanting to move to my ancestors’ homeland,” it’s in large part “we got evicted from this specific house at gunpoint, and now the guy who did it lives in our house. We would like our house back.”
I honestly… don’t remember this?
It was my second presidential election, I followed it quite closely, and I remember the message being that “Mitt Romney is an asshole rich guy who makes money on outsourcing your jobs & who wants to cut Medicare & Social Security, which is bad.”
Yep! Remember when Dems were like “oh my god, Mitt Romney is an existential threat to democracy!” Now people think he’s some kind of moderate, because that’s how far to the right the party keeps moving without fail, every election.
This level of dishonest hackery is so utterly deranged and evil.
The idea that the fucking anti-immigrant White Supremacist who tries to burn down Mosques is somehow inspired by Ilhan Omar is ridiculous on its face, but they’re running with it anyway.
Most “organizations” in politics aren’t actually organizations - they’re just some dude in a DC WeWork controlling a giant list of email addresses of confused old people who were suckered into clicking an ad.
As unions declined, basically nothing took their place.
Something that I was not expecting before this conflict was the extent to which the vaunted IDF seems to be the most poorly-disciplined military force I’ve ever seen.
It’s just been a daily barrage of videos of troops doing stuff that would be a huge incident in the US military.
The thing about “ISRAEL IS OUR STRONGEST MOST LOVING ALLY” rhetoric is that nobody who actually works in national security thinks that.
Israel spies on us constantly, fucks with our goals & efforts all the time, is a huge pain in the ass.
Less an “ally” than a “frenemy.”
The Pentagon has raised to $95.8 billion the estimated cost of fielding a new fleet of land-based nuclear missiles to replace the Minuteman 3 arsenal that has operated continuously for 50 years, officials say.
The political science on stuff like this is very, very clear - if you tell people that something mostly won’t affect them and will instead primarily affect more marginalized people, it results in more privileged people going “oh, ok.” and then becoming complacent & demobilized.
Lot of this sentiment today but telling white women that they face zero problems from this ruling is 1) factually incorrect and 2) a terrible, awful political message
Yesterday I canvassed a woman in PA who
-was wearing a Panda onesie
-ID’s as a “3rd party voter”
-Hates both Trump and Obama
-LOVED George W Bush (last person she voted for)
-Supports Oprah for President

issue: “mothers killing their children.” NOT abortion, infanticide.
Nearly a third of Black service members reported experiencing discrimination or racist harassment in just a 12-month period, according to a report commissioned by the Pentagon.
Veterans across the nation have worked together over the past 4 years to defeat Trump & now our work continues to win a progressive future with “liberty & justice” for ALL.
Uncommon people, fighting for the common defense.

Join us:
Doug Jones 100% out of these two.
Merrick Garland is actually quite conservative. That was the whole point. Obama nominated someone that the GOP ought to have had no reasonable objection to.
I think most of these reporters probably think what they are doing is “challenging the White House” & doing what they’re supposed to do “no matter who is in office,” etc.
But it’s hard not to notice that they ONLY seem to do it directionally in favor of “why not more war???”
“In the U.S. military, troops outnumber civilian employees 2 to 1. But civilians file far more discrimination complaints. Service members say there’s a reason: The Equal Opportunity process is fraught with risks for warriors.”
Ok sure, congrats to that generation of Boomers, who banked their unearned opportunities and then blocked any further housing construction so that almost no one after them could get the same good fortune (except their literal heirs).
I know that's right!
If I snagged a rent-stabilized apt 30 yrs ago for $250 and was then able to live my dream as a writer and photographer because I'm paying affordable rent, I'd be standing tall in front page news too.
I don't know her but I'm cheering her on.
As a Veteran, you’re allowed to be stridently conservative, or non-political.
And then we wonder how right-wing extremists get the impression that the military is on “their side.”
A downwardly-mobile generation for whom meritocracy has been exposed as a lie is not the most receptive audience for a Rhodes Scholar who represents every privileged rich kid that gets 40-under-40 articles for having skipped half the rungs of the ladder pulled up from most of us.
Generations of my family are buried at Arlington. They're buried alongside Muslims, immigrants, and countless others who make up the fabric of our country. That's the legacy

Anyway big financial investors like Blackstone are telling their shareholders that the REASON they’re buying up as many homes as they can is because “new supply has remained significantly lower than new household formation for the last decade.”

It certainly helps that anyone who booed could face a court martial.
This is the dynamic that allows this President to continually exploit the active duty military for personal political gain.
If anyone tries to tell you that President

was not welcome at the

The Commander-in-Chief arriving at his seat during the break.
Spontaneous, stadium-wide applause & roars from a crowd for POTUS 🇺🇸
Ya won’t see this angle on TV!
Donald Trump has used hate and fearmongering to try to divide us against each other, allowing him and his billionaire friends to rig our political system and our economy in favor of themselves.
I’m one of many
#VetsAgainstTrump
, because we need to come together as a country.
So it was this weird situation where old moderate people were, like, congratulating young progressive people on the excellence of their tribune, who actually had little in common with us & spent his time dismissing the policies we wanted.
Hence resentment.
That said, I’m also fine with class traitors.
If Pete Buttigieg turned around tomorrow and supported Medicare for All and a Green New Deal and stuff like that, instead of dining with billionaires in wine caves, I’d happily vote for him in 2024/2028.
Plus even the 55-45% split is deceptive, because 90% of it disappears when you simply adjust for demographics.
Veterans skew old. 50% of vets are over age 65. Those are the conservative ones! Because old people lean conservative!
The rest is just the overrepresentation of men!
Petraeus tried to order our security manager to drill a hole in the secure safe so that his classified computer could be charging while locked up.
He also insisted that government resources be used to fly his favorite candy - Atomic Fireballs - into country.

I’m a Marine Corps Veteran, and I stand with

You can literally get an AirBnB with an unobstructed view of the Great Pyramids - a great recreational amenity in a walkable, dense urban built environment!
If you want to call that “envy,” fine. Though I think that’s off.
Personally, I don’t want to *be* Pete Buttigieg.
I want to build a world where *Pete Buttigieg* doesn’t have to be Pete Buttigieg.
I encourage anyone wondering where NYC-based YIMBYs are on fighting for deeply affordable housing & supportive housing for the homeless to watch this with the sound on, and reflect on the major courage & integrity it takes to stand up to such a hostile room of your own neighbors.
This isn’t how I wanted to deliver my remarks, but I wasn’t going to allow my neighbors to interrupt me. The truth is our community builds very little new housing - affordable or otherwise. It’s time my neighborhood did its part to solve the housing crisis.
@NYCMayor
You shouldn’t peacefully protest outside a judge’s home.
Instead you should simply become a billionaire, and join the ~100 or so billionaires who fund much of America’s political institutions, candidates, and advocacy organizations, shaping what happens per their pet interests.
"If there's insufficient construction why is there so much scaffolding in NYC!" is my favorite version of this, because NYC has a unique issue where Big Scaffolding Corporations managed to institutionalize permanent scaffolding rentals instead of building repairs.
Shout-out to the committee staffer who set up the zoom meeting and then forgot they weren’t muted and obliviously started doing a job interview phone call talking about how “yeah I’ve kind of plateaued in my current role” while his boss was right there.
RIP 💀 💀💀
Wow this blew up!
If you’re inspired by this story, please chip in a donation to some of the nonprofits that help veterans like this one gain access to high-quality education.

I can’t emphasize enough that this kind of condescending entitlement is far more electorally destructive for Biden than saying something like “wow, we hear you, and we value and want to earn your votes” instead.
Trump is currently only beating Haley by about 37 points in the Michigan primary. Meanwhile, Biden is on track to beat “uncommitted” by about 65 points. But guess who the media is going to say is “in trouble.”
I’ve never heard of a single example of some white collar yuppie going “I heard they built some Luxury Condos in city X, I think I’ll move & find a job!”
But I know plenty of examples of those kinds of people being like “I got a job, but it’s in city X so I have to move there.”
House IT'S OV-AH wrap!
Rs will flip NY 17, 18, & 19, seizing the entire Hudson River Valley. They will also flip IA 3 - the one county out is a big GOP one and the margin will exceed Axne's lead. Ds will flip OH 1 (Chabot) and win NC 13 (open - notional R).

Recently, I have been thinking about this Marine recruit story from years ago. He was Muslim and targeted from within.
People are like “how dare you suggest we increase the amount of housing by building SRO micro-apartments” and meanwhile I just watched a tiktok with 3.3 million likes about a 95 square foot NYC apartment with no bathroom, comments full of envious people who want to move to NYC.
Guys, the ambiguity of “defund the police” is precisely what makes it an effective organizing rallying cry, and an effective pressure tactic against power structures.
Ambiguous slogans are floating signifiers.
We don’t care if technocratic Vox writers find it annoying.
She was the first pilot to ever successfully land an A-10 that was dead stick, with no power. The two previous pilots in those circumstances both crashed. She was awarded the Destinguished Flying Cross for her cool-headed flying to safely land her severely damaged plane.
So for International Women’s Day, I celebrate my wife bringing home a jet with 300+ holes in it after being hit by a missile over Baghdad 15 years ago next month.
These two objectives are impossible to reconcile:
1) “housing needs to get dramatically cheaper, so that new generations and working class people can afford it.”
2) “housing needs to keep getting more valuable, so that older/longtime residents can build wealth/fund retirement.”
When you don’t build “glass towers” as fishbowls for the rich, they simply buy all of our homes and combine them into one, resulting in a net loss of homes (without you noticing any visible construction of “change to the neighborhood”).
I think a politically & substantively smart policy would be a “second homes tax,” where your first home is exempt, but every additional residential property thereafter you own gets charged a progressively higher tax.
I got into an Ivy League the morally superior way - spending six years in the military and then playing upon colleges’ internalized guilt over the 1970s student protests.
She also was under the impression that 3rd party voters don’t have to vote, because “if there’s a tie they call us all to come down to the polling place to break the tie.”
I think she was confused by the 2000 Florida recounts with the hanging chads, etc.
Why do people keep calling this statement “classy”?
This is pretty standard Union-busting tactics.
A classy response to your employees voting to form a Union is “we voluntarily recognize our workers’ Union, and we look forward to bargaining in good faith to agree on a contract”
That was the smart move for him, strategically. The alternative was to keep talking like he did at the beginning, and have lots of young people feel warmly towards him while voting for Bernie instead of him.
But if you want you understand why young people resent him this is why!
Holy cow this apparently resonated with a lot of veterans!
Of you’re a veteran and a progressive, you should join the community we have at

!
Israel’s extremist government is also constantly interfering in our domestic politics, openly picking partisan sides.
Their relationship with most of our press & international NGOs is also toxic - to the point where they call human rights orgs “terrorists” and suppress them.
My favorite part about this poll is that, if you dig into the crosstabs, the difference between Americans and Brits is nearly ENTIRELY due to the women.
Brit & US *men* are equally confident vs various animals, but US women are MUCH more confident than Brit women in a fight.
Let me also add that I understand why Buttigieg ran the kind of campaign he did.
His basic problem was the same that someone like Julian Castro faced - that Bernie & Warren were in the race and took up all the oxygen in the progressive lane. Buttigieg adapted by moving right.
“My uncles encouraged me to join the military, so I took the test. But I failed the math part, so I couldn’t join. It’s prolly for the best.”
First thing I’ve agreed with her on in the whole conversation.
@JHWeissmann
The position of the White House seems to be that “we need a ceasefire of a few days, for the purpose of all the hostages being released (seemingly the only people whose lives matter), and some trucks of food to come in, after which the slaughter can continue once again.”
If you’re a Pete fan, that’s fine, I respect you. I’m glad you found a candidate that resonated with you.
You do not need to send me messages or replies offering to explain Pete’s policies to me. I am well aware of his platform.
I want every Afghanistan war veteran - whether you’re individually a conservative or a liberal - to understand and internalize that the Republican Party’s politicians do not give a single fuck about the lives of our
#AfghanAllies
. They smear & hate the people who saved our lives.
My problem with the Space Force isn’t that it’s a meme.
My problem is that the big defense corporations like Boeing & Lockheed were some of the primary advocates for creating it, because a new service creates bureaucratic interests to massively grow their own budget in future.
The median American also thinks there is, like, a “line” you can get in to apply to immigrate here legally.
But for the overwhelming majority of human beings, there is not.
In my experience the median American vaguely thinks there are in fact existing paths to legal status for undocumented immigrants—conservative messaging on “amnesty” has been so pervasive and persistent that a lot of people genuinely think it’s a real thing that happens a lot
Another 5 minutes later, after promising to check out the Reptar onesie on sale at Walmart, and wear it if I came back, I beat a hasty retreat.
Note: this woman wasn’t on my list, it was an incidental encounter, but she was definitely registered, b/c she got Campaign texts.
Great, so we’re united that

Since that’s true, surely this also means that
