Leader of Westminster City Council & Labour Cllr for Westbourne Ward. Official account for announcements is
@leader_wcc
. Not on here as much as I used to be.
This year, Westminster City Council has been working hard on delivering our
#FairerWestminster
strategy for the people of this city🏙️
In the video below, Leader of the Council, Cllr Adam Hug, talks about some of the highlights from 2023, from delivering truly affordable housing…
The residents of Westminster have put their faith in Labour to lead the council. It is an honour and a privilege. We will work every day to build a fairer Westminster.
Over £100k worth of counterfeit or illegal goods on my table seized yesterday from American Candy Shops on Oxford Street by our hard working
@CityWestminster
trading standards officers. As I was telling
@VanessaOnAir
we need landlords to take responsibility about who they let to
Statement on Night Stars volunteers by Westminster City Council. We are urgently pushing the police for proper answers. Our Night Stars do amazing work helping vulnerable people on the streets at night.
We also need greater transparency in company ownership with further reforms for Companies House-the upcoming Economic Crime Bill 2 can help with that. The Government also needs to properly resource Companies House, HMRC and other agencies to take action to deliver.
Yesterday's haul included 2246 counterfeit Wonka Bars; 2838 disposable vapes (both counterfeit and those with excessive nicotine levels, tank sizes above permitted & not authorised by
@MHRApress
), 223 Toys with no safety labels, 1393 counterfeit mobile phone covers + much more
I want to put on record my enormous thanks to all of
@CityWestminster
's officers & contractors who have gone above & beyond to keep Westminster clean & to manage the incredibly challenging security & operational issues that have helped allow the nation to mourn here in our city
"Having looked again at the temporary measures introduced onto one tree in Hanover Square, on reflection we agree there may be better alternatives and the spikes will be removed as soon as possible."
Read the council's full statement:
It is a deeply emotional time as we hear that our amazing MP, my dear friend Karen Buck, has taken the decision not to stand again at the next election. She has been a true champion for our local area, someone whose kindness and commitment to social justice is unparalleled.
The police have confirmed the three Night Stars volunteers will face no further action. I’ve written to the Commissioner setting out Westminster Council’s concerns over the handling of the matter & to request an apology to the Night Stars, something that has so far been rejected
An updated statement from Cllr Aicha Less, Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Protection, following the arrest of three Night Stars volunteers last weekend.
Great to welcome
@Keir_Starmer
&
@SadiqKhan
to my ward of Westbourne in Westminster to kick off the London election campaign. Showing how our new council homes for social rent at 300 Harrow Road are changing lives. Sadiq’s pledge of 40,000 new council homes will help even more.
I’m so proud that
@Hamza_Taouzzale
will be Westminster’s new Lord Mayor. Since his time as our youth MP he’s been a passionate advocate for local people in our city and I’m sure he’ll do an amazing job as Westminster’s first citizen.
🗳️ Westminster City Council is to vote in its first Muslim and BAME Lord Mayor, Councillor
@Hamza_Taouzzale
.
🥇 He’ll also be our youngest Lord Mayor at 22 years old.
Read about Cllr Taouzzale, member for Queen’s Park ward 👇
I want to give huge thanks to all the
@CityWestminster
officers and contractors who have gone above and beyond to make the Jubilee weekend so enjoyable for so many. The Party at the Palace, the Pageant, Trooping the Colour, Beacons, the Big Lunch, 51 street parties and much more
Westminster Tories trying to gut Labour’s efforts to fight dirty money and trying to pull out support for the Fair Tax Declaration. So disappointing but not surprising.
Westminster Labour Councillors are delighted to announce the launch of our manifesto for the 2018 Council Elections. This ambitious but deliverable plan sets out the real change Labour would bring to build a Westminster for the many not the few
I like, every other Central Asia watcher, am genuinely flabbergasted that
@RFERL
would be considering letting
@BrucePannier
go. A hugely detrimental decision to international understanding of the region that
@jamiemfly
needs to rectify urgently.
Fantastic result for
@pancho_lewis
who is the first Labour Councillor for the West End (covering Mayfair, Soho and Fitzrovia). Huge commiserations to
@patricklilley
and Caroline Saville
Delighted to introduce
@lisanandy
at
@LondonLabour
conference talking about the positive difference Labour is making locally in Westminster but how we can do so much more with a Labour government that will have our backs to deliver for our communities
Great to be out in Pimlico this morning with fellow Labour leaders from across London,
@RNBlake
@JSmallEdwards
and a surprise visit from
@AngelaRayner
all working to ensure we return
@SadiqKhan
as Mayor and the elect James as West Central’s first Labour Assembly Member
Today we march through the streets of Westminster for the 50th anniversary of
@prideinlondon
. We march to celebrate our progress, in recognition of how far we still have to go and for all those around the world who can’t march for the right to love who they love
I can reassure residents that if elected in May Labour will invest in upgrading Westminster’s tank battle group to match or exceed the more modern equipment on display by our northern adversaries
#investmentvscuts
Great to be able to thank
@CityWestminster
’s amazing street sweepers and waste team who made our city look spotless during the Jubilee (and for all the hard work they do all the time).
The plague of American Candy stores that has fallen on Oxford Street is costing the tax payer millions in lost business rates. However many seem also to be a symptom of the lack of transparency in UK company law & the lack of powers & resources to enforce
Labour will reform planning in Westminster to put residents before developers. We will end the hospitality culture, residents will be able to speak at planning meetings, we will stop the spread of tall buildings & build social & properly affordable homes
It's
#DyslexiaAwarenessWeek
& I just wanted to do my bit to tackle any stigma still out there and urge parents to talk to their teachers & the school SENCo if they feel their children need help. For years at school I struggled to spell. Bs and Ds were a perennial problem (1/some)
Did you know that our Leader of the Council, Cllr Adam Hug lives with dyslexia?
@leader_wcc
Adam visited Edward Wilson School, Little Venice, to speak to headteacher, Darren Guttridge about support they have available to help pupils with dyslexia.
Adam encourages local parents…
I'm delighted to be able to announce a significant new expansion of universal free school meals for our residents aged 3 to 14 in our nurseries & secondary schools, building on the work we've already started since January for all primary school children.
Here to support the
#EndOurCladdingScandal
protest outside Parliament. The government needs to take proper action to help leaseholders and everyone who have been harmed by the lack of support dealing with dangerous cladding and other fire safety issues
Westminster Labour will stand up to Conservative Government cuts that have hurt our communities. If you elect us on May 3rd we will restore support for vital public services such as our youth clubs and children's centres. For the full video visit
Keir Starmer kicks off his Queen’s Speech response by congratulating Boris Johnson on another first: “He’s the first resident of Downing Street to be a constituent of a Labour council.”
@PaulTMRetail
@CityWestminster
@VanessaOnAir
Need for a fundamental reform (and ideally replacement of) business rates. WCC effectively acts as a collection agency on behalf of Government. However we are urgently working with officers, the BIDS, landowners and others to get opportunities for better pop-up businesses/SMEs
Labour faces a big challenge trying to win Westminster Council for the first time. But if we do Westminster Labour has a radical but deliverable plan for our first 100 days in office, delivering a down payment on our manifesto & bringing the change we need
We need
@SadiqKhan
back as our Labour Mayor, working with Labour Councils and a future Labour Government to help us build even more of the Council Homes our residents need to build secure futures.
Delighted to have been able to work with
@jamesmurray_ldn
& the shadow treasury team on new ways to crack down on dodgy candy shops and incentivise new legitimate businesses. Lots of opportunities for a Labour govt to improve transparency & accountability
Huge congratulations to our new Cllr for Churchill ward the wonderful
@LizaBegum_
who fought an amazing campaign and will be huge asset to her community, to the council and to our Labour Group. Majority of 324 over the Conservatives after a competitive by-election
Ready for the
@SadiqKhan
school gates talking about his investment in free school meals across London. In Westminster those are helping us add to our existing programme so we can provide free school meals for Westminster children aged 3-14 (nursery to Key Stage 4)
The true cost of the Marble Arch Mound has ballooned to £6 million rather the original £2m claimed. It clearly exposes the hubris, incompetence and lack of transparency at the heart of Westminster’s Conservative administration
Great first public meeting since being elected as
@leader_wcc
with our local residents. We've got a lot to learn from you and a lot of work ahead to make
@CityWestminster
more responsive to your needs.
The response from the Met so far on the Night Stars has sadly not been enough (despite the efforts of local officers). There was no clear public update statement last night despite it being promised.
At this time of ever widening divides in our society we need to try to work together to find common ground. I’m confident that, now more than ever, the residents of Queen’s Park and Maida Vale do not share the values of Lee Anderson and David Starkey
Delighted to join today with
@LondonLabour
Leaders to call for the Government to follow the lead of
@SadiqKhan
and
@CityWestminster
in ensuring all primary school kids receive high quality free school meals.
And the next Mayor will either be
@SadiqKhan
who has always fought for a positive, outward looking & caring London & a Tory candidate representing a very different vision for our city. I’m confident that London and Sadiq share the same values but we’ve got to vote for it tomorrow
Our Labour Council working with a Labour Mayor and Labour Government will build even more council homes for social rent in Westminster to help tackle the housing crisis we face.
I know from personal experience how transformative a good quality council home can be.
In London we're already delivering record numbers of new council homes - for Londoners like Shaniqua and her family.
Imagine what we could do with a Labour Mayor and Labour Government.
Westminster Labour would scrap letting agent fees at the Council-run lettings agency and create an ethical organisation to support private renters rather the current Tory setup that is shamed on the rogue landlords register & fined by Trading Standards
Delighted to be able to talk to the Sunday Politics London about what what a
@wminsterlabour
administration has been able to do to help our primary school kids by introducing universal free school lunches-a saving of £550 per child per year for families at this difficult time
.
@leader_wcc
: “School hunger is a real issue as the cost of living crisis hits. This is why we're serving free school lunches at our primary schools. I visited St Mary Magdalene CE school to see how the scheme is working.”

Glad to see the CRT finally take action on the sunken boat on the Westbourne canalside after months of pushing by me, the Westbourne Cllrs and council colleagues
Back in February British MP
@margarethodge
listed members of Kazakhstan's elite who she argued should face further scrutiny, particularly in relation to assets some of them may hold in the UK. As these people were mostly close to Nazarbayev they've not been having good few months
For too long we in Britain have turned a blind eye to a corrupt elite in Kazakhstan that have stolen from their people to line their own pockets. Today in Parliament I named & shamed some of these kleptocrats and urged the Govt to take action by issuing sanctions against them.
Proud to announce that I am on the shortlist to be Labour’s parliamentary candidate in Tatton.
With the right candidate, we can win in Tatton. With my experience defeating Tories, delivering for residents, policy expertise & local knowledge, I am that candidate.
I’m extremely proud Westminster Labour was able to increase our vote share like this. Worth noting that Knightsbridge and Belgravia ward has half the number of eligible voters as several Labour wards in North Westminster. So I guess we are the 41% ;-)
All our thoughts are with Karen and also particularly her husband Barrie (Alderman, former Queen's Park Cllr and mentor to me and so many others) who is very ill at present.
Huge thanks to everyone who worked so hard knocking on doors for Labour in Westminster yesterday. We made an important step forward in terms of vote share and made some historic gains but it was not to be this time. We will keep working hard to hold the Council to account
Hugely proud of the campaign
@iamritabegum
has run over the last few years amid disruption around the general election and then the pandemic. No one could have worked harder and she has brought Labour to within a whisker in a traditionally safe Conservative London Assembly seat
Out with the Maida Vale team earlier tonight for
@SadiqKhan
and
@JSmallEdwards
before continuing our support for local businesses by decamping to the Carlton Tavern
Here in London, we don't just tolerate our diversity - we respect, embrace & celebrate it.
An amazing afternoon in Chinatown celebrating Lunar New Year & the huge contribution London's East & South East Asian communities make to our capital.
#LunarNewYear
#YearOfTheDragon
Utterly disgraceful behaviour by
@thameswater
a hugely profitable monopoly whose systems failed residents in North Westminster that is refusing to pay compensation to residents they let down.
As this
@DalrympleWill
article makes clear the statue of Clive was put up 138 years after his death as a way rewriting history to defend the Raj (see also Confederate monuments & civil rights). Historical memory isn't immutable it's shaped by politics
Huge congratulations to
@josephpowell
looking forward to helping you make Kensington or (as seems likely) the cross-borough seat of Kensington and Bayswater Labour at the next election
Gutter politics from Lee Anderson today-simply adding rocket fuel to the surge of hate crime that we are seeing across the country. Also yet another sign of the increasing hostility to London that is permeating deeper into the discourse of what was once the mainstream right
So proud that our
@wminsterlabour
administration are able to bring in free school lunches for all primary schools. Will make a massive difference to many families who are struggling to make ends meet right now
From 8.10 let's take a visit to St Mary Magdalene’s primary school in Westminster where Jamie talks to teachers and pupils. The borough has just committed to Universal
#FreeSchoolMeals
for all primary children.
“Free School Meals are a great leveller” says the headteacher
@sowetokinch
Have reported it to the council’s public protection and licensing team- they have limited scope in law for intervention in cases like this but will see what they can do.
