Two weeks ago, I experienced wheelchair rugby league after being invited to
@England_RL
training as they prepare for
@RLWC2021
.
It was tough, physical and requires incredible skill. I left aching and sore: but in awe of the sport and its stars.
Rob Cross was sat at home 12 months ago watching the World Darts Championship final like the rest of us. He wasn't even a professional. He didn't even have a Tour Card. On Monday, he's playing in the final. It's a sporting story like no other. Ridiculous
#darts
Average of 531,000 across the 12pm-2:45pm slot yesterday for Super League on Channel 4. But the match average audience was even higher I'm told: 631,000. Highest EVER recorded audience for a live Super League match.
I'm told Channel 4 are delighted with the numbers. Great start!
Look at the three men who have beaten Kell Brook. Crawford, Spence and the almighty GGG. Genuinely great fighters. Put some respect on Kell Brook’s name. He’s a phenomenal fighter. Khan wasn’t in the same league tonight and never has been: which is why he’s ducked it for so long.
Lindsey Burrow is the most incredible woman. Selfless and clearly the most amazing wife and parent you'll ever meet. We all spend our lives complaining about things that are so trivial. God bless the entire Burrow family.
An absolute measure of the man. Kevin Sinfield has plenty thrown his way by people - some of it unfairly, IMO. But he is a brilliant human being above all else, as this shows. The ultimate respect for him
On a sad day what a brilliant picture that is. Shows you just what rugby league is all about. Stopped playing together 5 years ago and hes the first man there for him, proper mates
If the disciplinary panel are serious about stamping ugly incidents out of rugby league then I’m afraid Tom Lineham should be looking at 10 games minimum for this coat.
We’re one step closer to a dedicated Sky Sports Roy Keane channel and I would pay Sky whatever they wanted to see Keane just look furious at people and modern-day footballers 24 hours a day
Wigan have just confirmed that their game against Catalans on round six in March will now be Pride Day, as the Warriors 'look to support the LGBTQ+ community'.
Outstanding from the Warriors 🏳️🌈
NEW: I’m told the expectation is that following the publication of official guidance, rugby league at ALL levels is now set to go ahead this weekend. That includes Super League play-off on Saturday
I've been quiet lately - and I want to share why.
For over 15 years, I've battled with an anxiety disorder and recently that, coupled with bottling up my emotions surrounding grief, nearly destroyed me. I'm okay now - but if you're struggling, speak out.
The outcry about this is a bit odd. When other teams did it in recent weeks it was perceived as incredible banter but because it's Leeds, it's out of order! This is the world we live in, social media, clicks and numbers are king
If you’re complaining about this SBW deal, maybe rugby league isn’t for you. This is a game-changer. A deal that could shift the sport’s profile for all the right reasons. I can’t wait to see him in Super League 🤯
Genuinely never seen it as busy at Widnes in my time coming here. Impossible to find somewhere to park, fans literally queuing round the stadium for tickets. This town deserves huge credit for the way it has rallied around its club (pitch looks lovely too!)
Canberra have been straight-up screwed. Referee called six to go, then changed his mind and decided it was a handover. Roosters go down the other end and score! Absolute carnage
Imagine your reaction if someone told you at the start of 2019 that within 18 months, Salford - SALFORD! - would reach both of rugby league’s major finals. 51 years away from Wembley. We’re running out of superlatives for Ian Watson now, aren’t we? What a coach.
Betfred normally award a £250 cheque for the man of the match after a Sky game: this year, they’ll donate that to the Rob Burrow fundraising pot - as well as also donating £250 to Mose Masoe’s fundraising efforts after every live game too. Nice touch from the sponsors
Can we stop with this. Zak Hardaker apologised for his remarks. He showed remorse. He coached a Manchester Canalsiders to integrate and better understand the LGBTQ+ community. Israel Folau has not once shown any remorse for his comments. To compare the two is appalling
Let's have it right. If the two teams playing on this field right now were wearing maroon and blue, Twitter would have gone into meltdown. Super League limps along on occasions, of course it does. But at its best, it is elite. Incredible drama and entertainment
Honestly don't know whether Chris Kamara showing up randomly at Castleford and sounding like he's been working in rugby league for years is an indictment on him or everyone else around him
Sergio Aguero is absolutely, undisputedly, the best striker in Premier League history, isn't he? Some fierce competition for that title but boy, he's the most lethal finisher I've seen. Those four goals tonight.. wow
#MOTD
Imagine your career ending in circumstances like that, knowing it's all over and still managing to come across with such dignity and class. We'll never see another like James Roby.
Those in charge of rugby league in this country should hang their heads in shame. A sport desperate for publicity by however means. The NRL told him where to go, saying Folau failed their inclusiveness culture. The RFL have lost all credibility in that regard today I'm afraid.
Hull KR are a proud, proud club. But I'm beyond pleased that someone like Neil Hudgell - a genuinely brilliant and passionate owner - can enjoy some success like this. He's pumped millions into the Robins. There wouldn't be a club like this without him. He deserves this.
To suggest Adam Hills is enthusiastic about fronting the Channel 4 coverage would be an understatement having spent some time with him today. Can’t remember being as excited about an opportunity for the sport like the one Super League on terrestrial TV provides.
This. This is the kind of stuff that will capture the attention and imagination of younger people. Exposes everything good about rugby league. Great stuff from JOE, and brilliant from whoever organised it too
Rugby league fans can get lost in the bubble at times. If you want the sport to reach new areas, and catch the attention of new people, a French team reaching the Grand Final is huge. That isn't to say nobody wanted Hull KR there, but this is a seismic night for the game.
'Ben, I have a try. Can you just check the grounding, the offside, the weather for the Bank Holiday weekend, whether I've got any milk in the fridge and if the washing up has been done please?'
#SLStHCat
St Helens were outstanding from start to finish. An incredible performance and that's before you drill into the numbers of stuff like salary cap difference - astronomical - seasoned internationals.. everything. The best performance by an English club side ever?
So this weekend you can watch the England Test team, Super League play-off rugby and some of the world's best golfers at Wentworth - but you can't go watch a game of grass-roots football in your local park. Starting to think football has dropped a bit of a clanger here.
After landing in England on Monday, Paul Wellens told his players Wednesday’s training session was optional. Every single player turned up to train.
Inside look at how
@Saints1890
became the world’s best: and the unseen work that’s created a dynasty.
Warrington expecting a crowd in excess of 11,000 tonight for the home game against London - another phenomenal effort from the Wolves. Over 2,000 discounted tickets sold to local schoolchildren, many of whom will go to their first rugby league game tonight. Wire leading the way
Shaun Wane finishes his final press conference as Wigan coach by thanking the press for 'always having his back'. A champion bloke who rugby league can't afford to lose for too long.
Rob Burrow speaking on the pitch now. "I was tired but I absolutely loved every minute of it. You don't know how much it means.. no words will come close to describe how I feel right now. Thank you so much."
Sam Tomkins just been asked if he thinks fan feeling towards him will subside next year when he’s not playing for Wigan anymore.
His response: “Probably not. They’ll probably still think I’m a nobhead!”
Wayne Bennett was right. England does have a national team it can be proud of. Those who make the big decisions and are paid extraordinary amounts to do so now have to ensure this team plays as often as possible to ensure we fully maximise the potential of this group.
Two French teams in Super League, three Cumbrian clubs in the Championship and the likes of North Wales and Coventry progressing. This expansion lark might catch on, you know. Toulouse will have a few worried in Super League in 2022
Leigh haven't won the cup since 1971.
Rovers haven't won it since 1980.
Two sets of new stories to tell, a whole generation of supporters at one club getting to see their team win the Challenge Cup. This is what it's all about. Can't wait already.
Seeing
@neworder
for the first time was always going to be special. Seeing them five minutes up the road from where I live? Unreal. An unforgettable night.
#NewOrderHalifax
I think most would agree that Lee Radford probably deserved a little bit better in terms of how it's all ended. Being sacked in that manner, minutes after full-time does not reflect well on anyone. A great bloke who has given his all for Hull and delivered some real history.
Really hope Sky can get to Leeds tonight now Warrington v Catalans is off. It'll be great to give Rob Burrow the exposure his bravery, courage and determination deserves on a national stage.
What a story. A genuine part-time club, with not a single contracted full-time player on their books, taking on one of the big boys for a place at Wembley next month. Halifax into their first semi-final since 1988 (!!) - and boy they do deserve it. Hats off to them!
Genuinely think it would have been better to kill off Magic Weekend than have it at Elland Road. That's nothing against the venue or Leeds as a city, but it just doesn't fit the brief of what Magic is supposed to deliver. What a whimper of a way for a great event to go out.
Rugby Reboot Required: Scrap internationals until next year? Change to 13-a-side? Bring in gadgets and gizmos?... Sir Clive Woodward and Martin Johnson join our experts to suggest ideas to SAVE RUGBY
You often hear people ask what Super League's strategy is. Whether the game likes it or not, decisions like these mean Super League is just an M62 stronghold competition. And you know what, that's fine if you like that kind of thing. But the chances to grow diminish by the day.
Look at Ashton Golding. This is what it means. This is progress for a new rugby league nation, and exactly what the World Cup is about: creating moments that last a lifetime.
Blake Austin, Konrad Hurrell, Tui Lolohea, Kevin Naiqama, Lachlan Coote and now Trent Merrin - plus a few others too. If we are to have overseas players coming to play in Super League, then these are the kind you want to see here. Box office talents. Should be fun next year!
Who knows if Shaun Wane as England coach will work. It might. It might not. But I saw a man today who will give absolutely everything he's got and make it his complete priority to ensure the national team succeed over the next two years. That, for me, is a step forward.
Two ACLs before the age of 20. A broken back. Unemployed for months.
James Donaldson has had some road to Old Trafford. This weekend he could realise a childhood dream and play in a Grand Final - and do it for 'his club', Leeds Rhinos: where he wants to now finish his career.
NEW: Matt Hancock announces an immediate testing programme for all secondary school children in the worst affected areas of London and Essex.
An attempt to keep schools open as cases in the South East rise.
@LBC
Craig Richards has just revealed someone else will take England’s women forward in 2023 before breaking down in tears in his press conference. A genuinely great guy who’s helped England immeasurably close the gap.
Jackson Hastings on Sky: "We wrote this on a whiteboard pre-season and everyone I told laughed at me. I don't know how we did it, we just did it. There's tears in my eyes.. my mum and two little sisters flew over and to come full 360 with my career, they're tears of happiness."
Enjoy it, Salford fans. You're the ultimate underdogs and everyone that isn't a St Helens supporter will be backing your team next week at Old Trafford. A genuinely wonderful underdog tale for the sport to thrive over for the next week or so.
The RFL banning the England captain for two-thirds of a Test series against Tonga is absolute rugby league heritage. A sport unrivalled in its ability to make ridiculous decisions
England captain George Williams will sit out the first two games against Tonga after his appeal against a one-match ban was deemed frivolous. Only in rugby league
George Flanagan: 10 games for an attack on an opponent's testicles.
Two games fewer for racially abusing someone.
"Rugby league stands in solidarity against racism" - chortle.
Still on a high from this earlier and a (non-rugby supporting) friend just said in the pub he watched it earlier and was so hooked by it that he watched the whole game. That’s reach. That’s legacy. That’s the value of international rugby league. More of it. Please.
Absolutely ridiculous. A four-way battle to avoid the drop on the final weekend. Stick your complicated, convoluted Super 8s league structures. The best team goes up, the worst goes down. Natural selection. It creates incredible drama like we're going to get next weekend!
Will history remember JUST how good a player Sean O'Loughlin has been? His ability so often discussed by league fans but the fact he's so universally respected among his peers underlines what a great of the game he's been
That is, quite possibly, one of the cheapest and weakest yellow cards I have ever seen given in my entire life. This play acting is getting a bit much now
Forget what's happening at the bottom if you're looking for your story in Super League this season. If Salford Red Devils make the play-offs, it beats anything happening elsewhere. They're fantastic to watch, and are being steered along by a superb British coach in Ian Watson.
The Headingley crowd is 8,621. Comfortably - by several thousand - the biggest-ever crowd that's watched a standalone women's game of rugby league in the northern hemisphere. Organisers say they sold 11,000 tickets but didn't count those who didn't attend on the final figure.
Spoke with Trent Merrin after the game on a number of things, but clear he's got a bond with Leeds fans already:
"You don't get this in Australia. I am really, really loving it. The fans go crazy here, and I want to stay with them after full-time and dance with them all night!"
Fantastic touch from Salford having Jackson Yamba and his son deliver the match ball after everything they've had to contend with recently. Salford certainly doing some great things in their own local community this season - that's to be applauded.
The on-field try/no try call is the biggest nonsense in professional sport. A referee isn’t sure enough to award a try but his opinion is decisive in the video referee allowing or disallowing a try? Okay. Nothing against the officials, it’s the rule that’s ridiculous, not them
8,206 for a World Cup quarter-final involving Australia last year. 11,210 for an England Test match. I get there's a few factors at play but at what stage do we decide Huddersfield just doesn't show the appetite to host major international games?
St Helens coach Justin Holbrook is a credit to himself, his club and Super League. Done all his press duties and asked him for a bit of time in regards to upcoming Guardian feature and he couldn't have been more happy to do it. Absolutely brilliant
@AndyBurnhamGM
@JHenderson
I'm looking forward to seeing the Government call out Richard Branson, Tim Martin and the rest of the hedge fund lads like they shamelessly did with footballers
Just been on a conference call with new RFL president Clare Balding and I'm absolutely blown away by her passion, enthusiasm and determination to make a difference in rugby league - especially in the women's game - during her time in charge. Copy out later this evening
“I won’t lie down. I didn’t do it in rugby and I won’t start now.”
Rob Burrow on his MND diagnosis, how he’ll fight it and how a meeting with the inspirational Doddie Weir has steeled him for the biggest battle of his life.
World Cup organisers say there were more supporters from the North East here among the 43,119 crowd than any other region of the UK today. Highest grossing gate for an individual group game in this country at a Rugby League World Cup, too. A great start
#RLWC2021
He nearly walked away from the game as a teenager when he couldn’t get a game at West Hull. In 2021 he was a Championship player. Today, Hull KR’s Mikey Lewis makes his Test debut. A story of perseverance and never giving up paying off.
John Kear: "Leeds do things with class, they’re the benchmark and they’re what we need to aspire to. You don’t have great clubs based on money, you have them based on values. They’ve demonstrated that year upon year and I’m certain we will do that with this group of players."
Jermaine McGillvary hits out at rugby league’s authorities, calling on Super League and the RFL to ‘bang some heads’ and put international rugby first - saying the sport in this country has gone backwards during his time as a player.
Wayne Bennett: "I hope you realise you've got a pretty special footy team here in England. We played in the World Cup last year and did great to reach the final. And England should be really proud of them, they’re a great group of guys. We're building some depth too."
As good an advert for international rugby - or any sport - as you’ll find.
Hopefully those who have resisted international rugby league for so long have woken up and realised it’s what we need more of. Now.
The year is 2040. James Roby, now well into his 50s, helps St Helens to a 15th Super League title with victory over New York at Old Trafford with an 80-minute performance, having done the same at Wembley against Chicago in the cup final months earlier. Repeat ad infinitum
