Just marked a decade back in Australia after nearly a decade as a foreign correspondent and, have to say, feel like crying for my country. Right wing conservatism has sapped the life out of Australia, stunting its humanity, ambition and potential. Hard to be optimistic.

The culture wars have poisoned the Australian media. It is now almost impossible to find reporting on the Covid crisis which is not influenced by a political agenda of one kind or another. An historic failure by editors, producers, presenters and reporters.

There is a much bigger thing going on here. Hillsong (Pentecostalism) had taken deep root in the Liberal Party, with potentially big implications of Australia's future. For the ABC to treat it as a normal church is a huge journalistic failure. Watch out Australia!
