Capitol police officer Eugene Goodman is rightfully being hailed as a hero after singlehandedly holding back rioters from entering the Senate chambers last week. An Iraq combat vet and member of this Corps, Eugene was a hero long before last Wednesday. We celebrate his valor.

The Battle of Mogadishu ended 27 years ago this morning. These two men, Randy Shughart & Gary Gordon, became legends. When they learned ground forces weren't going to make it to the crash site, they volunteered to insert to try to save the pilot. Let's think of them today.

This feels like the end of something. Edward Shames, the final living member of the Band of Brother, Easy Company, 506th, has left us. He died peacefully at home at 99. Ed jumped into Normandy, fought in some of WWII's most critical moments, was memorialized on the HBO show.

Rock Merritt left us this morning at ~ 11:30. He died at home with his daughter Dianna at his side. He was at peace. Dianna told Rock he was free to go. We certainly know he did his duty here with all of us. He was among our Nation’s finest Soldiers, mentors, and citizens.
