Hi, if you were at the central London anti-mask / ‘COVID is a hoax’ march & rally today you are not welcome at any UK visitor attraction. We try hard to be inclusive & accessible but have to draw the line at dangerous, science-denying, narcissistic sociopaths. Just so you know.
Am very
#Proud
of the
@nationaltrust
membership who today voted FOR inclusivity, equality, diversity, openness, for the freedom for staff, volunteers, members & visitors to freely & openly express who they are; & AGAINST discrimination & homophobia. For everyone, for ever. 🏳️🌈
Remembering with love my friend George, who died on this day in 2016. He would have been utterly delighted - and thought it hilarious - that ‘Last Christmas’, first released 39 years ago, has finally made it to be the Christmas No1.
I volunteered for
@centrepointuk
for 17 years. Never, in all that time, did I meet a single person for whom homelessness was a ‘lifestyle choice’. Often an escape from abuse, cruelty, a consequence of abandonment or life structures collapsing. But never a lifestyle choice.
The British people are compassionate. We will always support those who are genuinely homeless. But we cannot allow our streets to be taken over by rows of tents occupied by people, many of them from abroad, living on the streets as a lifestyle choice. 1/4
London’s Mayor
@SadiqKhan
, Chief Executive of UK Hospitality
@UKHospKate
, & London’s Cultural Ambassador
@bernarddonoghue
all tweeted about UK tourism using Taehyung’s (“ BTS’ V”) pics / gifs and we love to see it! I want to go to London too. 🥺
Returned from a trip out to find a note & photo album from 2 lady owners of our house in the ‘70s, chronicling how they’d restored it from a wreck. They’ve passed the album to us as they’ve no children. I’ve been in touch & they’re coming back for tea very soon. How heartwarming!
I was made redundant from a job I loved, earlier in my career. It feels personal & a rejection of your abilities & talents, but it really isn’t, or shouldn’t be. You’ll experience grief, anger & confusion. But don’t doubt yourself or your talent. Be strong. This too shall pass.
One hates to intrude on private grief but it should be known that while Culture Sec she didn’t attend a single mtg with her own Govt DCMS Tourism Industry Council. No interest at all: Dorries delays resignation until peerage info is released - BBC News
Because of work & travel I often eat alone in restaurants, I quite like it. I like people watching & inadvertently catching snippets of conversation. The 2 couples at the next table are swingers who haven’t met before and wanted to meet socially before a ‘big night’ tomorrow. 1/2
Utter madness that as from this Wednesday saunas & steam rooms can remain open but the
@NationalGallery
can’t. That
@Harrods
can open but
@Tate
must close.
@DCMS
this is badly judged & badly managed; attractions are being sacrificed when it’s clear they’re COVID- safe venues.
At the end of half term & the beginning of a morale-sapping, desperate week for visitor attractions, let’s take a minute to thank all those who have worked so hard, passionately & energetically to provide visitors with safe & hugely enjoyable experiences over the last few months.
Thinking of my dear George, who died 6 years ago today. An amazing man, friend, artist, campaigner, philanthropist and a bringer of joy. Gone far, far too soon, but what a legacy and impact. Missed every day.
It’s so bloody frustrating that all visitor attractions which have worked so hard, so diligently & so creatively to be COVID-safe, welcoming, enjoyable havens, now have to close because of others’ irresponsible behaviour and disastrous pandemic crisis management. There. Said it.
11 years ago this evening. The opening ceremony of the London 2012
#Olympics
. An extraordinary, beautiful, creative, rule-breaking, precedent-setting expression of pride, joy, heritage, history, culture, the NHS, achievement, positivity & optimism. It feels like another country.
Gosh. Turns out that people who were massively incompetent and over promoted were / are also genuinely horrible, unempathetic, narcissistic individuals.
On the cusp of
#attractions
reopening; pause and breathe. Your non-furloughed staff are exhausted but excited, your furloughed staff aren’t able to join in the frenzy & the mania of opening up & feel detached. Take care of both because it’s your staff who make ALL the difference.
Just look at the joy & relief unleashed by the overthrow of a narcissistic, dangerous, racist, sexist, homophobic, sexually incontinent, science-denying, climate-change refuting, pathological liar who is as cavalier & careless with the truth as with his personal relationships....
They’ve left & they’re off for drinks elsewhere. I feel a bit privileged to (aurally) witness strangers meet & get on. Good for them. Enjoy tomorrow. I’d love to hear their views on the escalating heating costs of hot tub parties though. That’s an unwritten
#VictoriaWood
sketch.
Well this is surreal. The newly installed Constable of
@TowerOfLondon
comes into The Keys, the private pub of the Yeoman Warders of
@TowerOfLondon
, & they all welcome him with a huge cheer. This is not a normal pub, and I’m delighted that it isn’t & I’m honoured by being here.
Easily my favourite photograph of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HM The Queen. It brilliantly captures and communicates service, humour, support, love, affection and intimacy.
To all those working in attractions this Easter 🐣 weekend: front and back of house, catering, gardens, retail, curatorial, security, HR, facilities, cleaning, marketing, fundraising, education & car parks. Thank you. You provide the backdrop for people’s happiest memories.
I’m delighted that the
@nationaltrust
membership yesterday voted down moves towards elitism, exclusion, nostalgia and a private members club and instead for openness, inclusivity and an invitation for people to visit and ‘come as you are’. That’s why the membership is growing.
Opening attractions is great news, but don’t forget that your non-furloughed staff are exhausted & your still-furloughed staff can’t participate in the frenzy of activity; opening to the same people you closed to isn’t progress; lend your power to support those who can’t open yet
The Home Secretary’s presence at, & participation in tomorrow’s Remembrance service at the Cenotaph will distract & detract from the event, given her role & contribution to today’s fascist clashes. No one - no one - should ever distract from the purpose & focus of the service.
I believe that the UK should offer to host next year’s
#Eurovision
on behalf of, & in cooperation, collaboration & co-curation with
#Ukraine
. It’ll be their event but we - in
#UKtourism
- can provide the hosting, venue & support. The population of the UK want to be allies.
Nadine Dorries has resigned tonight as Secretary of State for
@DCMS
. She was appointed on 15th Sept 2021 & has served for nearly 12 months. In the next few days the 10th Secretary of State in 10 yrs will be appointed. I look forward to issuing my annual welcome to her successor.
In my meetings for
@alva_uk
with
@DCMS
ministers today I’ll be asking them &
@hmtreasury
to divert the £120m earmarked for the 2022 festival, to support arts, theatres, cultural orgs & festivals who will be experiencing cancellations & cash flow problems this year, instead.
London is just less Londony without theatres, museums, galleries, performance venues, heritage properties, historic houses, our cathedrals, abbeys & gardens, zoo & attractions. Why they can’t open at the same time as H&M, Primark, saunas & bookies I just don’t know. It’s wrong.
Delighted, honoured and surprised at this award. I’m very privileged to work in support of, and in the leadership of the extraordinary work and importance of organisations inc
@alva_uk
@BristolOldVic
@PHMMcr
@LIFTfestival
and the London Tourism Recovery Board.
#UKtourism
They’re getting the bill but not before a whole verbal ping pong of ‘we’ll get it, it’s our pleasure, thank us tomorrow; oh we will; I know you will; it’ll be our pleasure; all our pleasure’. There’s a whiff of Abigail’s Party meets Alan Partridge. It ain’t Byron.
After you’ve reopened: keep sharing & collaborating; take risks; partner with unusual suspects; explicitly invite new audiences; value

ops & cleaning colleagues; be bolder & more honest in your story-telling; balance digital, outreach & on-site activities. Breathe.
My thanks to everyone working in visitor attractions, in whatever capacity. It’s been a rollercoaster of a year, the agony of stop/start opening & closing; the hard work of making your sites COVID-safe; the loss of your colleagues due to redundancy; & you’re exhausted. Thank you.

Volunteer gardeners
@CoteheleNT
are celebrating the completion of this year's garland, a festive tradition since 1956 that represents the growing year. The 60-foot garland is on display until twelfth night. Have you seen it yet?
Well I’m 50 today, which is odd as I feel about 25. Without being all thanksgivingy about it, I’m feeling very blessed in having the most wonderful husband, friends, colleagues, job, roles and trusteeships that I love & which sustain, develop and enrich me every day. Thank you.
Last week we received a photo album & a note from a couple who lived in & renovated our house in the late 70’s. They wanted us to have it as a keepsake of their work. Today one, Joan, came to tea & inspected the house. I gave her a piece of her bedroom wallpaper as a souvenir.
Since I became a CEO, over 12 years ago, I’ve never given an interview or a quote to The Sun. If you want to lead a values-led organisation you should behave accordingly. I wish other CEOs would do the same.
I feel like I’m in a
#VictoriaWood
sketch. The men are talking about Formula 1 & the hot tubs they’ve built & bought, & the women are talking about M&S, Christmas plans & not sacrificing their hairdressers in a cost of living crisis. It’s FASCINATING. Yes, I’ll have desert please
Visitor attractions in England are still open right up until the point that they’re not! So I’ve just booked tickets for the 3pm slot
@TowerOfLondon
@HRP_palaces
this Wednesday. Visit while you can, buy Christmas presents in the shop, have a tea in the cafe & love your visit.
I am delighted to confirm that the
@GOVUK
regulations on the English lockdown restrictions have just been published & we have won our request for the outdoor elements of
#BotanicGardens
to remain open, only their indoor elements (green / glasshouses & biodomes) must close. Thanks
Today marks 9 years as CEO of
@alva_uk
: our membership has more than doubled, we’ve quadrupled the events we hold (up until March this year), we’ve produced daily COVID bulletins and lots of webinars for the sector since COVID hit. Huge thanks to members, partners & the board.
I’ve spoken to a lot of the culture ministries of Govts around the world & I know this: very few other countries have anything as precious, extensive, diverse, curatorially exemplary, environmentally committed & accessible as
@nationaltrust
& they admire it deeply
#TreasureIt
Since I became CEO of ALVA nearly 9 years ago I haven’t given an interview or sent a press release to the Daily Mail. You have choices, make them. I wish others did the same.
I shall be expressing my disappointment at the arbitrary distinctions between non-essential retail and indoor attractions with
@DCMS
Ministers at the meeting of the Tourism Industry Council tomorrow. There have been no proven transmissions of COVID at any visitor attractions.
A friend has just sent me this picture of a Baby Yodatini cocktail whilst I was in a meeting with
@cabinetofficeuk
and it was VERY distracting. And now I want one even though it’s 11.15am.
#Yoda
#Yodatini
I was appointed as Director of
@alva_uk
10 years ago today & took up my role in September 2011. Membership has tripled; our events grew from 6 a year to 1 a fortnight in 2019; created 13 sector groups; & in the last year we’ve introduced free research & weekly webinars for all.
If you’re visiting a museum, gallery, theatre, performance venue, stately home, heritage property or any other visitor attraction from tomorrow be patient, be kind, be respectful of the staff & of your fellow guests. Protect yourself & others, respect the rules & enjoy your visit
@DeborahMeaden
It’s a deliberate act of self harm. Our culture, arts, theatre and music are hugely significant in terms of soft power and global influence, particularly post-Brexit. This seems like wilful self sabotage.
Just voted online for the election of
@nationaltrust
council members (all the NT recommend candidates) as I believe that the NT should be faithful to its founders’ vision of being inclusive, for all, for everyone, to be welcoming & not discriminatory or elitist. Come as you are!
With much reduced capacity, & therefore no crowds at museums, galleries & other attractions, this is a brilliant time to really enjoy a very special visitor experience at places that you love, places you’re discovering & places that you’ve always promised yourself to visit.
I’ve been in hospital since Thursday evening - NHS75 plus 1 day. I’ve been treated by skilled, caring staff from Blackpool, Manchester, Liverpool, Scotland, Ireland, Kenya, South Africa, India, Malaysia, France, Poland and Pakistan. The NHS is daily delivered by heroes.
Since we moved into our house three years ago we have planted sunflowers 🌻 in a patch of land on the street outside the house of our erstwhile neighbour
#vincentvangogh
. This year we distributed seeds around the neighbourhood and we’ve spotted at least 21 sunflowers locally.
Just voted online for policies & council
@nationaltrust
AGM. I voted for thoughtful, intelligent, environmentally sensible policies & progressive candidates who understand the need for good governance, honesty, equality of access & who don’t bury their heads in aspic & nostalgia.
Always shocked when you speak at someone else’s conference - for free & you pay your own expenses - & before the event you are deluged with emails about logistics, WiFi codes, arrival times, twitter handles, slide size etc & then once it’s over you don’t even get a thank you.
It is deeply unprofessional & cavalier that the
@GOVUK
&
@10DowningStreet
announcements, which will affect millions of ppl, place economic sectors like
#UKtourism
in jeopardy, & risk the jobs of people working in COVIDsafe visitor attractions, are communicated through media leaks
Ladies and Gentlemen, on this
#StValentinesDay
I give you Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I will survive’ in the form of a Shakespearean sonnet. You’re welcome, and may you love and be loved in return.
Wow. Just experienced the revealing of the new
#GringottsBank
@wbtourlondon
tonight. Utterly amazing. A fantastic experience to add to the astonishing
#MakingOfHarryPotter
visitor experience. Go. Prepare to be amazed.
Just to be clear, if your ‘instinct’ is not to adhere to and follow physical distancing rules, clinical, and health and safety rules when you visit an attraction, you will be thrown out. Our members have standards.
The visitor economy is experiencing closure by a thousand cancellations. This is stealth collapse, effectively sanctioned by Government but without the fiscal support to protect and sustain our tourism, culture, performing arts, heritage and hospitality industries.
@hmtreasury
Just realised that I became CEO of
@alva_uk
eight years ago today. We then had 31 members & held 5 events a year; now we have 71 members, host an event every fortnight, & have created 12 sector groups. My team, my colleagues & members are a joy to work with, & to represent.
Deeply honoured by the public vote for the
@MandHShow
Special Recognition Award tonight. As I said it’s for the entire
@alva_uk
team - both of us - so it’s for
#LucySantos
too. Congratulations to my fellow brilliant nominees & to those who nominated me & voted. I’m very touched.
I’m on this
@BBCRadio4
programme broadcast tomorrow. I chat with
@TristramHuntVA
about my belief that museums are not neutral - in their collections, their storytelling - but can & should be safe spaces for ‘unsafe’ conversations & activism
The
@alva_uk
family are lighting candles tonight to remember Barbara Commons, our Membership and Events Manager, who passed away this morning. She was kind, thoughtful and a friend. She loved working for ALVA and she loved the places she visited and the people she met. Goodnight.
Closed the
@alva_uk
office
@SomersetHouse
this morning (we’re going to be working at home for the forseeable future) and it was quite emotional. I love this place and loved having an office here. And it’s all the more difficult when it looks like this today.
Just finished work, now a very large drink, a moment of regret and anger about our departure from the EU and Erasmus - it changed my life - and Paddington 2 on catch-up.
I’ve voted for inclusivity, diversity, transparency, values, ethics, principles, filling-in the gaps of history, telling honest stories however uncomfortable, valuing the past & building for the future, green policies & practices, good governance, & an NT for everyone, forever.
Public trust in institutions is vital. Thank you to everyone who supports the National Trust. It is here for everyone. This article is in today’s
@thetimes
Members, please use your democratic vote for Council and resolutions. This is important. Visit
32 yrs ago tonight I stood on the Berlin Wall, partied at the Brandenburg Gate, went into East Berlin, stayed in the West. I blew my student grant & lived off mates for the rest of term. That experience shaped my world view, my European identity, my politics & my internationalism
In the 11 years I’ve been a CEO I’ve never sent a press release or given an interview to the Daily Mail or Mail on Sunday. Deliberately. I believe that if you lead a values-based organisation you should live your values. I wish others did the same.
8 yrs ago tonight was the Opening Ceremony of the
#London2012
#Olympics
. It was celebratory, multicultural, poignant, daring, showcased the NHS, our humour, history & music, the industrial revolution & HM parachuting. It was Britain at its best & feels like a different country.
Just been giving some Chair advice to a friend who’s taking on their first Chair role. Summary of what I’ve learned:
1. You best lead when you grow and enable the next generation of leaders
2. As soon as you get power give as much of it away as you can

Today marks 10 years since I became CEO of
@alva_uk
& what a decade it’s been. The membership has tripled, our events went from 5 a year to at least 1 a fortnight by 2019, & over the last 18 months we’ve had daily bulletins, weekly webinars & advocacy wins for the entire sector.
The opening ceremony of
#London2012
Olympics was just 7 yrs ago tonight. Confident, creative, celebratory, able to laugh at ourselves, to celebrate the strengths that derive from our diversity, our inclusion, our internationalism, our history, our values. What the hell happened?
Now this is clever from
@RoyalOperaHouse
shop; they’re repurposing swatches of costumes & fabrics used in productions to make cushions &, in this case, a pack of 5 pocket squares. This is from a production of Otello. Brilliant. Recycling, unique authentic gift & free £ for them.
One of the couples went to a swingers party in Leeds a fortnight ago and some people there were wearing masks (for COVID) ‘which didn’t work for us, it wasn’t the same’.
Twenty years ago today I met the man who would become my husband and we've been together ever since. There's a lot to be said for persuading someone who's decent, caring, intelligent, clever, handsome, compassionate & inspiring to come on a life journey. Reader, I married him.
Honoured and delighted to have been appointed Chair of
@NTlovesLondon
and
@southeastNT
Regional Advisory Board of
@nationaltrust
this week. I’m looking forward to attending my first meeting this afternoon before formally taking over as Chair on January 1st.

31 years ago this weekend I was watching East Germany tentatively open up to the West. I blew my grant for the rest of the University term - we had grants then - bought a ticket and flew to Berlin to see the wall come down. One of the best spontaneous decisions I’ve ever made.
@DeborahMeaden
@BarackObama
He’s mesmerising, inspiring, thoughtful and talks in sentences. Watching this programme is like sitting-in on the best dinner party conversation. And
@DavidOlusoga
asks, with intelligent and restrained brevity, the best questions to invite the best answers.
