I volunteered for @centrepointuk for 17 years. Never, in all that time, did I meet a single person for whom homelessness was a ‘lifestyle choice’. Often an escape from abuse, cruelty, a consequence of abandonment or life structures collapsing. But never a lifestyle choice.

Returned from a trip out to find a note & photo album from 2 lady owners of our house in the ‘70s, chronicling how they’d restored it from a wreck. They’ve passed the album to us as they’ve no children. I’ve been in touch & they’re coming back for tea very soon. How heartwarming!

Utter madness that as from this Wednesday saunas & steam rooms can remain open but the @NationalGallery can’t. That @Harrods can open but @Tate must close. @DCMS this is badly judged & badly managed; attractions are being sacrificed when it’s clear they’re COVID- safe venues.

I was appointed as Director of @alva_uk 10 years ago today & took up my role in September 2011. Membership has tripled; our events grew from 6 a year to 1 a fortnight in 2019; created 13 sector groups; & in the last year we’ve introduced free research & weekly webinars for all.

I’ve been in hospital since Thursday evening - NHS75 plus 1 day. I’ve been treated by skilled, caring staff from Blackpool, Manchester, Liverpool, Scotland, Ireland, Kenya, South Africa, India, Malaysia, France, Poland and Pakistan. The NHS is daily delivered by heroes.

Since we moved into our house three years ago we have planted sunflowers 🌻 in a patch of land on the street outside the house of our erstwhile neighbour #vincentvangogh . This year we distributed seeds around the neighbourhood and we’ve spotted at least 21 sunflowers locally.

Closed the @alva_uk office @SomersetHouse this morning (we’re going to be working at home for the forseeable future) and it was quite emotional. I love this place and loved having an office here. And it’s all the more difficult when it looks like this today.

32 yrs ago tonight I stood on the Berlin Wall, partied at the Brandenburg Gate, went into East Berlin, stayed in the West. I blew my student grant & lived off mates for the rest of term. That experience shaped my world view, my European identity, my politics & my internationalism

8 yrs ago tonight was the Opening Ceremony of the #London2012 #Olympics . It was celebratory, multicultural, poignant, daring, showcased the NHS, our humour, history & music, the industrial revolution & HM parachuting. It was Britain at its best & feels like a different country.

Today marks 10 years since I became CEO of @alva_uk & what a decade it’s been. The membership has tripled, our events went from 5 a year to at least 1 a fortnight by 2019, & over the last 18 months we’ve had daily bulletins, weekly webinars & advocacy wins for the entire sector.

31 years ago this weekend I was watching East Germany tentatively open up to the West. I blew my grant for the rest of the University term - we had grants then - bought a ticket and flew to Berlin to see the wall come down. One of the best spontaneous decisions I’ve ever made.
