10/10 recommend to everyone who's interested in Taiwanese political scene to watch
#WaveMakers
on Netflix. The English subtitles aren't that well-made so some plots and jokes can be missed. Give the show a bit more time and I promise you'll still love it.
Happy Moon Festival 🌕
Here are some mooncakes that I love and grew up eating. I especially want to highlight the curry one. It combines curry powder in mung bean paste, braised pork and fried shallot. Some historians believe that it was influenced by Japan.
was walking from Banqiao MRT to the DPP rally, when a grandma stopped her scooter and asked the young woman walking in front of me “Where’s the rally?”
The woman hesitated a bit and asked, “Which one are you going to?” and the grandma answered awkwardly, “um…team Taiwan la.”
The last working water buffalo retired in Yunlin County. After 10 years of working together, the farmer sent her to a retirement center. I think this is the perfect explanation as to why many Taiwanese people don’t eat beef.
Terry Guo just announced his running mate will be Lai Pei-Hsia, the actress who played Lin Yue-Chen in Wave Makers.
The character Lin is considered an analog of the current president Tsai Ing-Wen.
It's funny how people get upset as soon as Taiwanese people start identifying their culinary history as their own. And I am def saying this is part of the Greater China 大中華 mindset that still generalizes Taiwanese culture to forever be a subculture.
The current mayor of New Taipei, who's very likely to be reelected, was the head of the Taipei Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division during 1980s (which was still the martial law period). He was also involved in the death of democracy activist Deng Nan-jung 鄭南榕
Reminder: Chiang Kai-shek's great-grandson Wayne is still the frontrunner to be the next Mayor of Taipei, according to polls. Local elections in Taiwan take place on November 26th
Look, I know this is a hot take but I’m impressed by Pizza Hut’s turtle pizza, and I will explain why. This is a pizza inspired by Tsao a Kueh 草仔粿, a traditional rice-based food to have on Tomb-Sweeping Day, which is on April 4th this year.
New trending event on my Facebook:
“Pick Tsai Ing-wen up at the beach”
Cause in the latest DDP campaign video she was left on a coastline highway, and handed the car to William Lai and Hsiao Bi-khim.
Nantou Theater, one of the oldest theaters in Taiwan, announced last night that they will stop showing the movie ”Untold Herstory” after Nov 20th due to the amount of harassment they got on Facebook. (Untold Herstory is a movie about female political prisoners in the 1950s.)
Lin Yu-hong, who runs the agriculture page Lin Bay 好油, received threats online for criticizing the government’s handling of egg imports. After investigation, police found out that Lin staged the threat himself with the help of a KMT staff worker.
My grandma’s 長輩圖 game just keeps getting stronger.
(For those who don’t know, 長輩圖 is the weird greeting pictures with flowers and tea cups that you got from your parents or grandparents.)
Please Mazu, please spare me from listening to another Taiwanese man telling me how the MeToo movement is “weird” and these women should’ve come forward years ago.
I-MEI Foods company put out a special chocolate bread in memory of Chiang Wei-shui's importance in Taiwan's resistance movement against Japanese rule. Inspired by the story of how the police got a local gang member to throw mud at Chiang while he was giving a speech in public.
The fact that KMT dominated the local election is not a sign of Taiwanese people being pro-CCP, it's a sign that our country still has a long way to go in terms of transitional justice. KMT is not being held accountable for what it did.
A while ago, the famous Taiwan pastry chain Chia Te bakery announced that they were giving up China market after being asked to provide detailed recipes. I went to see their Google Maps review since I heard people started commenting on this.

my local breakfast place recently started selling this: French toast with ungodly big slices of avocado, cheese, and condensed milk. A very New Taipei take on avocado toast and it’s NT$85 (less than 3 USD). I’m both extremely proud and confused.
I'm happy to be Taiwanese today.
we went to film at a polling station at 8 am sharp. Immediately saw people waiting in line to vote. And now it’s my turn.
(forgive my dirty sneakers, they have been to many rallies the past month.)
Man: This female legislator got married and had a kid during her term, she must have been neglecting her job.
Also man: Taiwanese women are useless after they turn 30yo. This female candidate is too old to ever have kids.
Seriously, what do they want from us? 🤷🏻🤷🏻
DPP candidate Wu Szu-yao hits
back at fmr KMT minister of
health Yang Chih-liang, who yesterday criticized her for not
having children. Wu says, “in democratic and free Taiwan we have 100% bodily autonomy” and “my uterus is none of your business”.
If you've been wanting to get some recs of Taiwanese new wave films, the remastered version of Hou Hsiao-hsien’s A CITY OF SADNESS is coming back to theaters on Feb 24th. It's the first film in Taiwan that dares to talk about the Feb 28 incident back in 1989.
To briefly explain this press conference: It's essentially them saying “I deserve to be the presidential candidate more than you do,” but in a very long, naggy, and passive-aggressive way.
While the character Lin stood up for sexual harassment in the show. Lai Pei-Hsia chose to team up with Guo, a candidate who, when confronted with the allegation of calling Tsai an “old virgin,” replied, “Let's not get caught up in small details like this.”
It’s so difficult to describe the feeling of logging into Facebook every couple hours and see yet ANOTHER woman who came forward and shared her experience of facing sexual abuse/harassment. Like, I know this place is fucked up but WOW.
Today I became the first person in my family to find out that my grandfather was conscripted in Kinmen in 1959 during the Aug 23rd bombardment. So I guess this is your reminder to talk to the elders in the house. Even tho some of them really need a hearing aid.
Eat Drink Man Woman is a great film, but it was also made almost 30 years ago. So many great Taiwanese films have been made since. If you want to watch something food-related, “Zone Pro Site” by Chen Yu-Hsun is a fun one about the banquet culture in Taiwan
@dearclarissa
The Taiwanese food in Taiwanese movie Eat, Drink, Man, Woman look really delicious. Wait, those are all Chinese dishes. Even the movie title is a famous phrase in Chinese.
saw a high school girl scrolling TikTok on the MRT. was thinking if I should tell her it's not a safe app to use, but I then quickly realized how lame that's gonna sound.
I hate to say this, but the crazy aunty vibe is def boiling inside me.
She is quarantined in this cold and empty room. Everything you see in this picture is all she could carry with her. The bed they provided her is without a mattress, blanket, or pillows. It's been 3 days. She still hasn't been given any medicine.
Seeing people on the internet saying they are against Indian immigrant workers coming to Taiwan because "these are blue-collar people who are potential rapists."
It's just amazing how racist Taiwanese people can be.
It’s interesting how the media in Taiwan is covering this story. A good demonstration of how they can manipulate public opinion. And you know the situation becomes complicated when considering the potential affiliations of certain media outlets with China. Here's my observation:

People in Taiwan came a long way from ROC gov leaving the UN bc Chiang Kai Shek’s 漢賊不兩立 policy to realizing that Chiang was offered to stay in the UN as Taiwan but refused. Now there’s a systematic fear of calling ourselves “Taiwan” on the intl stage (eg, the Tokyo Olympics)
This is how the

The UN needs to be radically reformed.

walked into a noodle place in Hualien and asked if it was okay that we worked while having lunch. As soon as we sat down there was an aftershock. The windows shook while I was deciding if I should run. The owner came out and said to us, “Oh this is fine. No need to be afraid.”
I don't think Taiwan People's Party is anti-CCP or can be seen as a progressive political party. In fact, Ko publicly made several inappropriate comments about women. And he admitted that he "personally" voted against same-sex marriage in 2018.
as someone who grew up in Taipei, I'm constantly being told that I'm too hectic and walk too fast by my friends from southern Taiwan. I find it interesting to hear HK immigrants in Taipei saying how they love the "slow-paced" lifestyle here.
I posted the story of a white terror victim I recently met at the Human Rights Museum. Then my high school friend replied and asked me if this happened in China. A good example of why we Taiwanese people have to educate ourselves on the history of Taiwan outside of school.
Many people were surprised about the NTU students’ sexist political campaigns, but how can you be surprised when we literally elected someone who said “When you see more women working in a certain field, it means that profession is going downhill” as the the mayor of Taipei?
Exciting to see that we're on the path of allowing single women options to have children, and detaching from the idea that you need to first get married in order to have kids.
MADE IN TAIWAN, the book that I assisted the research with, is now available anywhere books are sold in the US. And in Taiwan, you can find it at Eslite or on
our driver during the shoot today was a Rukai village chief from Pingtung. He told me if he wanted to legally use his real name instead of his Chinese one, he would have to redo everything, ie, id, bank, any certificate.
Appreciate the Indigenous perspectives. Taiwan's identity shift is too often tied to TW-PRC tensions, but internal changes like TW's democratisation & decolonisation have arguably played a larger role. For Indi comm, the struggle remains w/ KMT-ROC legacy.
As someone who had to spend time learning the history of Taiwan after leaving school to understand the history of my own country, I really appreciate this thread.
Dear
@BonnieGlaser
,
@jessicacweiss
, Tom Christensen, I ask respectfully that you retract this ideologically loaded, anti-intellectual, and factually incorrect line: “Tsai has allowed the teaching of Taiwan’s history separate from the history of China in high schools."

Chiayi City recently started giving middle school boys free HPV vaccine. Chien Min-lien, a former KMT party member, is accusing the health bureau of “damaging the future leaders of Taiwan” for vaccinating school children.
Is this gonna be a whole thing now? 🤦🏻
I randomly saw a 1-star review that said,” the pineapple cake is a scam because it doesn’t contain actual pineapple, it's made with winter melon filling!!!!”
Isn’t it a known fact that traditionally, pineapple cake is made with winter melon?
/2/
But now, with different varieties of pineapple (like the golden diamond pineapple) growing in Taiwan, it's more and more popular to make the cake with actual pineapple. But we call it 土鳳梨酥 instead of just 鳳梨酥.
Taiwan Dang Gui 當歸 (Chinese Angelica) sounds like “Taiwan is supposed to return.”
They said “Taiwanese independence is against history, it's a dead-end. The country must be unified, and it will.”
Any TW ppl will tell you they’re used to this bs, but it doesn’t mean it’s ok.
Taiwanese people tried to make pastry with pineapple in the 70s but realized it was too acidic, and the texture of the filling wasn’t smooth enough. That’s why they mainly used winter melon sugar mixed with a little pineapple jam.

Couldn’t have worked with a better team to cover the Taiwan elections! Massive thanks in particular to
@xinyun_tw
who for the last six months has patiently and happily answered every inane question I’ve had about Taiwan and its politics 😅
Ko apparently visited Terry Gou's house tonight and stayed 90 minutes, but Gou's campaign didn't give a clear answer when asked by the media if they would align. As Ko said, BEFORE THE 24TH ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!
I assisted with the research of this book, and my mom’s side of the family came to Taiwan hundreds of years ago. My grandfather has been eating at Yonghe Soymilk 永和豆漿 for the past 60 years. He never stepped foot in China and that's the only taste of Shaobing he knows.
Tomorrow is Christmas 🎄
Instead of buying expensive packs of mulled wine spices, go to your local Chinese medicine store and ask them to pack you a bag of spices. It will be like 30-50 NTD.
not sure if people know about this, but you can watch Revolution of Our Times on Vimeo for $11.29. It's an famous documentary about the Hong Kong protest in 2019.
just got paid for a research job I did for a foreign media outlet. I had to spend the past two hours proving to my Taiwanese bank that I’m not participating in money laundering. Lol
a post on PTT said the reason why there aren’t more women at the rally is bc “Taiwanese women don’t care about housing justice. They rely on men to buy them houses. They’re at home online shopping while enjoying AC.”
Usually, smaller local theaters outside the cities will only show blockbuster movies. The fact that Nantou theater was willing to even put this movie in their schedule is already pretty impressive. And that is also why I’m sad to see news like this.
It finally happened to me 😌
This week I heard a grown man say, during a work meeting, “you should trust my opinion on this. You know, I drive a Benz.”
Omg, spread the word!
This man drives a Benz, so everything he says is valid.

movement in Taiwan has gone WAY beyond politics. I saw someone making a list of all the people who have been accused and it’s a loooooong list. These are also the people who are somewhat known to the public, we’re not even counting everyday people here.
Today is the 77th anniversary of 228, so I want to share this story that I worked on as a field producer about Taiwanese identity. We went to the Human Rights Museum and talked to a victim who was jailed for participating in a pro-independence org.
Just saw on Facebook that Coco Lee passed away. She was the voice behind Mulan in Taiwan, which was my grandma’s fav Disney film. We watched it so many times together that I memorized all the songs in the movie.
Married women are expected to stay with their husband’s families most of the time during the Lunar New Year holiday, including the big new year's eve dinner. Traditionally, married women will only go visit their parents on the second day of the new year.

A post is going viral on an online forum in TW. An anonymous male user complained about queer people being “outwardly gay,” when he already tolerates their existence. He then asked, “Why is there a pride parade but no straight parade?”
And here I thought we live in 2023.
Taiwan’s political scene is deeply rooted in the temples, the religious centers of Taiwan. “It’s difficult for China to infiltrate us using the temples because they tend to have deeper connections with the locals. Most temples won’t twist god’s will even when they’re bought out.”
in response to someone calling out TPP’s English campaign slogan saying, “Even Trump wouldn’t dare to say this,” this is what TPP legislator Lai Hsiang Lin did...
It's a green color mochi-like food that can be made both sweet (adzuki bean paste) and savory (shredded radish), and this pizza delivered both flavors. According to the website, the body of the turtle is savory, and the feet are sweet.

After The deputy secretary-general of DPP stepped down from her post yesterday, another woman has come forward and shared her experience of facing sexual harassment while working for DDP. She didn't receive any help or justice, and was also bullied by her supervisor.
It's important to remember that Taiwan faces ongoing disinformation warfare domestically. Local media that are willing to boost rumors and posts on FB only makes it worse. I believe this is the answer to why the Minister of Agriculture would resign over minor issues like eggs
Just want to kindly remind everyone that Terry Guo, who lost the 2019 KMT presidential primary, once said:" Democracy alone does not provide food to eat.(民主不能當飯吃)"
Hundreds of workers joined protests at Foxconn's flagship iPhone plant in China, with some men smashing surveillance cameras and windows, footage uploaded on social media showed
A noodle shop aunty just complimented me when I asked her to add black vinegar to my noodle.
She called me a connoisseur. I feel like my identity has been validated.
good low key food stands in Taiwan usually don’t have a designated media contact so you have to call the restaurant landline multiple times like it’s the 90s and the owner is your bestie. I love when the staff just refer to me as “that girl” when they pass the phone to the owner
came across an essay that questions the mainstream theory that Three Cup Chicken 三杯雞 was invented in China. Instead, the author argues that it actually originated in Taiwan. This begs the question. Why should we care about the origin of Three Cup Chicken?

A friend of mine took HSR from Taipei to Kaohsiung this morning just to vote. I'm so thankful that I only had to take an hour-long bus ride lol
please go vote

a funny story in his family: When the great-grandfather was asked by the gov to come up with Chinese names 漢名, he didn't know how Han people pass down their surnames. He ended up randomly giving his five sons different ones, so the family now has five surnames going around.
I chuckled when the TPP polling expert whipped out that NCC data to explain why they refused to acknowledge the polls that were done by only landlines.
Wu Yin-ning, the former head of Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Corporation who was fired due to waves of criticism from the media and commentators, also posted about how agriculture can be an easy target for disinformation because people lack knowledge about it
