50 years ago high minded people said, forget space, fix the earth. That didn't work. Now its our turn, let us develop the space economy to fix the Earth.
There is a choice before us, this future, or one of prosperity through the economic development of the Moon, Mars, and the asteroid belt.
Choose wisely.
@neiltyson
That's human history. The Bushmen would say the same thing about the Bantu, the Persian about the Egyptian, most of the world, from the viewpoint of Ghenghis Khan.
Making all history about White Europeans is diametrically opposite of your call for truth in science.
Dear
@JeffBezos
In 2003 when you, myself, and Walt Anderson sat down for breakfast in Seattle, we conveyed to you our greatest concern, which was that rich people in the space arena would cause more harm than good. I had the same talk with Elon. You both promised to do right.
Buying an NFL team, suing NASA because you and your team made a mistake in their bid, and working to stop fellow travelers from making this happen, is against everything that you believed in when you were at Princeton in your SEDS chapter. Please stop it.
for the 21st century.
Unless you change course, have a change of heart, admit that you screwed up, and move to do the right thing, we all, including all of our space dreams, is going to suffer.
There is no one to do this but you Jeff. We are asking you to do it.
You promised to exert every means to do things right, to do everything possible to open the space frontier, as you and I consider ourselves "Gerry's kids". Elon has kept that promise. You have not. Please quit listening to those people who want to to act like a rich person.
Not only has the good will that Blue Origin had painstakingly built for almost 20 years been destroyed, the lack of progress in your engines is endangering national security by not delivering hardware to United Launch Alliance.

There is no such thing as "renewable" energy other than trees and direct sunlight. Any technology like wind and solar that requires a global industrial infrastructure for its manufacture, distribution, and replacement, is not renewable. Opposing nuclear power is anti-climate.
We have made amazing progress in the last 30 years, against amazing odds. Bringing private finance into this realm was our goal in the Space Frontier Foundation and the National Space Society. Many people spent their lives in this syssiphian task.
I don't think that you understand how thin the thread of our progress is, and how easy it would be for the powers that be to reverse our progress in the government from the left and right to support what is truly the solution to climate change and other dire societal needs...
@mattyglesias
They lived to maybe 35 years old. Had no clean water. starved quite often. Had zero medical care. Were owned by the local lord, were conscripted on a moments notice for war.
Do you seriously think that today is worse?
If the United States had executed on president Nixonโs โproject independenceโ, announced in response to the Arab oil embargo, of building 1,000 nuclear plants by the year 2000, we would have a fully decarbonized power infrastructure today.
It was opposed by environmentalists.
Georgia Power just brought two new nuclear reactors online.
Together, they will:
โฃ run for 60-80 years
โฃ power 500,000 homes
โฃ generate $700 million in revenue per year

And then there is this.... This vain fellow required two brushings per day to keep his fur well kept. He was the most love in the world to us, and the greatest terror to all other cats in the world, except his sister.
This is just one example of what we lost when we killed Apollo. It was proposed to do one AES mission with the last two flight Saturn V's, landing at the north pole for two weeks. This was an epic abandonment of the future, of us, but we have the chance to turn that around.
I want to say something publicly in support of
@elonmusk
today. I have known him since the beginning of SpaceX and just want you to know that we in the space community support you and wish the best for you today.
You know, it kind of pisses me off that SLS is branding itself as the most powerful ever as its throw weight beyond LEO is just a bit over half that of the Saturn V.

In Apollo, Boeing built the 1st stage, the 2nd stage by North American Aviation, the3rd by Douglas, the LM by Grumman, the CSM by North American. For 50 years you and your party have underfunded space. If you don't want them there first, increase NASA budget to $40 billion/year.

This is what far too many do not get. Energy use = prosperity. You cannot dial back energy use without bringing back poverty. The key is to go forward with advanced energy systems who's pollution per unit of power generated is far less. What magic is that? Nuclear power.
I am in an airplane at 30,000 feet, typing on an advanced power efficient computer, with more memory that all the books in humanity up to 150 years ago, over a global terrestrial and space based Communications system that connects billions of people at a time. a miraculous time

I still remember the CEO of Arianespace and ILA laughing at Gwen Shotwell at a conference in Singapore when she announced that the Falcon 9 first stage would be reusable.
None of them are laughing today.

For hundreds of years North Africans routinely raided the southern European coasts for slaves. It was still going on in the 18th century on the high seas, enough for this to be America's first declared war. So even in this you are wrong.
@BillNye
tell that to the 9 generations in my family that came here in the 1630's and never owned slaves.
Additionally, on this day we should celebrate and remember the 340,000 white Americans who died to make this day possible.
The reason for anti-space ad on the superbowl is that a positive future in space for humanity does not require, nay it renders moot, the calls for communism and degrowth.
Space is pro human, pro sustainability, and is the antithesis of their antihuman agenda.
@MaraGay
Slavery has been around as long as humanity has. It was white, Christian, European and American men that largely ended it. It only survives in nations of color where the strong oppress the weak.

This is world changing. Congratulations to the NASA team for having the intestinal fortitude to make this selection. Heads are exploding all over the traditional contractor community.
We are in the third decade of the 21st century, time to act like it!
Here's the deal: A sole-source award to SpaceX for the Human Landing System is going to be hugely unpopular in Congress. But it means NASA is is serious about getting to the Moon with the funding they have. And if Congress adds budget, NASA can bring on an HLS competitor.
@thehill
Yes Bernie, because NASA and Congress have done such a good job at it for the last 39 years....
NOT....

There are some universities that need to be disbanded, everyone fired, then after everyone is gone, needs to be burned to the ground, and the dirt salted as a warning to the next 500 generations.
It is my opinion that today demarks historical periods, just as the first steamship, or the first flight of a heavier than air vehicle by the Wright brothers.
Humanity's breakout into the solar system begins today.

Your goal, without including nuclear power as a central element of a sustainable future, dooms billions to starvation and early death.
A far better course.
1. Nuclear power, first fission, then fusion.
2. Electrification of transportation.
3. Hydrocarbon production from Sabatier process.
4. Lunar and Martian industrialization and settlement. 5. Asteroid resources.
For a sustainable future. Your's isn't.

Every single one of these groups, are anti-climate, and pro death.
Without nuclear power it is impossible to operate a global civilization of 8+ billion humans.
Perhaps that is their goal.
Real climate action.
1. Nuclear power (fission first, then fusion)
2. Electrification of transportation.
3. Electrically generated liquid fuels (Sabatier process)
4. Resources from space.
5. Lunar industrialization, Mars settlement.
This is something you don't see every day.

1. The economic development of space is the key to our common global prosperous future.
2. Nuclear power is the only sustainable power source for civilization.
I was only vaguely aware of this, regarding president Richard Nixon's
