Taiwan is not Afghanistan, and Taiwan is not Ukraine. Taiwan is not Donetsk either, no matter what Chinese state media tries to suggest. Lazy comparisons are often used irresponsibly to support a triumphalist narrative for China, or to weaken confidence in democracies. (1/)

Bravo! Yesterday, Taiwan's Coast Guard detained a Chinese sand dredger operating illegally near the Matsu Islands, arresting 8 crew members. This morning, the ship was ordered to "spit out" illegally mined sand back into the waters near Matsu: amounting to more than 2,000 tons.

Yesterday we campaigned around Nangan Island on foot, with campaign balloons depicting yellow croaker fish on our backs. One round trip around Nangan is around 20km. We started out at around 6:00 and completed a full circle by around 18:00, stopping to chat with voters often.

So no, China won’t launch WWIII. China might express dissatisfaction, but that returns us to where we draw the line for yielding to China’s demands. I don’t think Taiwan should actively provoke China, but a trip unrelated to national sovereignty shouldn’t be seen as such. 5/5

Nothing angers me more than Putin’s claim to “protect” Russian-speakers in Ukraine. Here in Matsu, the native language is similar with that of China’s Fuzhou area. People desire respect towards linguistic minorities within Taiwanese society, not political annexation. It's simple.

Geography makes a difference. The TW Strait acts as a natural barrier that greatly increases the scale & complexity for an invasion. An amphibious assault of this size requires a massive, time-consuming buildup, noticeable several months in advance through satellite imagery. (2/)

If we're going to make Afghan comparisons, Taiwan survived that moment 40+ years ago. US troops left Taiwan in 1979 after recognizing the PRC. Entirely different context now: US not trying to get China on board to isolate the USSR, as China itself has become the main competitor.

Congressional diplomacy has always been the norm for Taiwan. Traditionally, intl congressional groups have been seen as less sensitive than visits from the executive branch, or less "provocative." It's ridiculous for China to arbitrarily use any trip as an excuse for violence.

As the DPP is nominating a total of 10 local candidates in Matsu this year (including me!), we plan to walk 10 times around the various islands of Matsu, according to the number of DPP candidates for each island. That would amount to walking around 160km on foot.

Several illegal Chinese sand dredgers entered Matsu's "Restricted Waters" (<6km), on SW side of Nangan Island, around 5pm, May 2. Taiwanese coast guard vessels drove out the illegal ships. CGA also expelled a loitering Chinese cargo ship near NW side of Nangan. #KeepOut

Former Vice Premier Yeh Chu-lan葉菊蘭 visits Matsu. Yeh was married to Taiwan independence activist Nylon Deng鄭南榕, who self-immolated in 1989. She said the Eastern Min language spoken in Matsu brought back memories of Deng's father, a 1st-gen immigrant from Fuzhou, China.

Many thanks to friends from #HongKong who came to the Matsu Islands today to host a silk printing activity. We printed "Free Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times" on flags, t-shirts and banners. The picturesque Qinbi village features many anti-communist slogans from the Cold War.

Today we reached Taiwan's "Northernmost Frontier" - Dongyin Island - by helicopter to teach English lessons. We discussed local cultural heritage using a picture book about the Dongyin lighthouse. The ferry route is often cancelled in winter because of turbulent seas.
