Frankly I’m disappointed at the hyperbolic response leading up to Pelosi’s Taiwan visit from certain "China experts" in the West. If a Chinese state-media pundit claims that China will attack a foreign delegation, and you believe it, then you’re probably not an expert on China.1/
Taiwan is not Afghanistan, and Taiwan is not Ukraine. Taiwan is not Donetsk either, no matter what Chinese state media tries to suggest. Lazy comparisons are often used irresponsibly to support a triumphalist narrative for China, or to weaken confidence in democracies. (1/)
Bravo! Yesterday, Taiwan's Coast Guard detained a Chinese sand dredger operating illegally near the Matsu Islands, arresting 8 crew members. This morning, the ship was ordered to "spit out" illegally mined sand back into the waters near Matsu: amounting to more than 2,000 tons.
Taiwan stands with Ukraine! Took a flight to Taipei yesterday to express solidarity.🇹🇼🇺🇦 I shared my thoughts from the perspective of the Matsu Islands, which endured decades of artillery fire from China, leading to the deaths of many innocent civilians. 1/2
I have accepted defeat in the election for the Matsu Islands’ legislative seat. Congratulations to Chen Hsueh-sheng for reelection. In a 3-way race, the DPP received 1,328 votes (23.5%), up from 706 votes (11%) during my first campaign in 2020. (1/N)
Tonight's Dongyin Island 東引 during the "4th Taiwan Strait Crisis": around 50km from China on the northern end of the Taiwan Strait. The EDM bubble-bath party rages on, as Taiwanese tourists here to attend an annual obstacle race dance under the gaze of a military statue.

Although situated in different regional contexts, Taiwan stands in solidarity with Ukraine🇹🇼🇺🇦, as both nations are threatened by aggression based on irredentist claims. Taiwan has announced sanctions towards Russia, with cross-partisan support from Taiwan’s parliament. 1/
Hundreds of Taiwanese tourists ride the ferry to Dongyin Island 東引, located on the northern end of the Taiwan Strait, to attend the annual Military Trail Challenge, which features 3.5, 8.5 and 16km obstacle races. Looking forward to events packed for the night! 1/
My detailed on-the-ground account of the recent internet outage in the Matsu Islands, which lasted for 50 days after Chinese vessels damaged our sea cables in early Feb. The incident sparked conversations on improving Taiwan's communications resilience.
Today I received the

nomination for the 2022 Matsu Islands County Magistrate election. This is the first time for the DPP to nominate a CM candidate in Matsu, a county long dominated by the KMT. We are also nominating 9 local candidates, such as county councilors... 1/
Happy Armed Forces Day to the troops! Glad to share some old photos of myself & our local candidates in Matsu from our conscription service days in Taiwan's army and air force.

Flew across the Taiwan Strait from the Matsu Islands to Taipei for a one-day trip today. Domestic flights connecting the main island of Taiwan and the offshore islands are operating smoothly on schedule, with tourism unaffected. I plan to ride the ferry back to Matsu tonight!
Yesterday we campaigned around Nangan Island on foot, with campaign balloons depicting yellow croaker fish on our backs. One round trip around Nangan is around 20km. We started out at around 6:00 and completed a full circle by around 18:00, stopping to chat with voters often.
Taiwan has announced that it will not supply semiconductor to Russia. This is how the DPP authorities in Taiwan chase the clout and assert themselves in a grandstanding manner.
🇹🇼🇺🇦 Proud to raise the Ukrainian flag at the Democratic Progressive Party offices in the Matsu Islands, alongside the ROC(Taiwan) flag. After years of harsh military rule due to its status as a "warzone" threatened by China, today's Matsu cherishes both peace and democracy.
China has been conducting drills along its coast, near Pingtan (marked in blue) and Luoyuan Bay (red). The exercises are not directly visible from the Matsu Islands. While Taiwanese troops have raised their level of alertness, most residents in Matsu have remained calm. 1/
Strategic ambiguity means that the US lacks a written mutual defense treaty with Taiwan, which has been the case since 1979. It does NOT mean that the US president cannot explicitly commit support for Taiwan's defense. President Biden’s comments were never gaffes or mistakes. 1/3
Archipelagic Homeland: Map of Taiwan with all the outlying islands enlarged: Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, Hsiao Liuchiu, Lanyu and Green Island. It presents a maritime-centered perspective of Taiwan as a plurality of islands: culturally diverse but bound together by democratic values.
Communist officials are encouraged to issue violent threats, but not expected to follow through. It’s a method of communication that requires reading between the lines. If Western “experts” allow targeted remarks to affect policy, they effectively help spread disinformation. 4/

So no, China won’t launch WWIII. China might express dissatisfaction, but that returns us to where we draw the line for yielding to China’s demands. I don’t think Taiwan should actively provoke China, but a trip unrelated to national sovereignty shouldn’t be seen as such. 5/5
Nothing angers me more than Putin’s claim to “protect” Russian-speakers in Ukraine. Here in Matsu, the native language is similar with that of China’s Fuzhou area. People desire respect towards linguistic minorities within Taiwanese society, not political annexation. It's simple.
So no, China is not invading Taiwan tomorrow. Taiwan has never ruled out the long-term possibility of Chinese aggression, but if and when China decides to act, the world would not be taken by surprise. (3/3)
Geography makes a difference. The TW Strait acts as a natural barrier that greatly increases the scale & complexity for an invasion. An amphibious assault of this size requires a massive, time-consuming buildup, noticeable several months in advance through satellite imagery. (2/)
Signed up for my 2nd term as Director of the
@DPPonline
Matsu Islands Chapter. In 2020, I helped initiate grassroots outreach in Matsu by launching this office. This year, I'm excited to invite many local political newcomers to register as DPP candidates in the upcoming midterms!
Absolutely despicable behavior by China. It shows an utter disrespect for the rule of law in the Czech Republic - it also follows countless cases in which Chinese authorities have harrassed & intimidated various targets on foreign soil. This is completely unacceptable.
A belated Happy Dragon Boat Festival! May all your zongzi - rice dumplings - hit their marks and keep everyone stuffed.

🇺🇦🇹🇼 On the 2nd anniversary of Russia's aggression, hundreds marched together in Taipei to express
#Taiwan
's solidarity with

. Both our nations cherish freedom. Both our nations face threats from authoritarian states. Democracies must stand united.
When China issues violent threats, people in Taiwan heighten our level of alertness and observe actual actions that follow the remarks, such as limited displays of force. We don’t ignore the comments, but we should focus on avoiding civilian accidents in the process. 2/
If we're going to make Afghan comparisons, Taiwan survived that moment 40+ years ago. US troops left Taiwan in 1979 after recognizing the PRC. Entirely different context now: US not trying to get China on board to isolate the USSR, as China itself has become the main competitor.
I tried to translate this famed tweet by

你作為有色人種,卻是一個極端的白人至上主義者,這種認知失調一定讓你極為痛苦。
在你說「但是日本也...」之前,請回去念一下歷史,為什麼動漫在旭日之國這麼受歡迎。
This coming from the biggest opposition party in Taiwan, which decides to respond to my tweet thanking Japan & US for their help—is to call me a white supremacist. Other than the fact that I laughed for 5 mins, this shows how irrelevant and dangerous KMT is to Taiwan's politics.
Vice President

Riding the overnight ferry across the Taiwan Strait towards Matsu's Dongyin Island, located on the northern end of the strait. All passenger flights & ferry routes to Matsu are in operation as usual. Many tourists have signed up for tomorrow's Dongyin Obstacle Course Race. 🏃
Observations from the Matsu Islands: People are cautious about the latest developments and the troops in the offshore islands have raised their level of alertness, but people don't panic over the drills or cave in to fear. The local tourism industry remains unaffected... 1/
Taiwan’s offshore islands are still KMT strongholds, but growth for the DPP (and TPP) indicates a desire to hold the actions of powerful local politicians accountable to the public, as well as increased transparency to clamp down on corruption. Competition brings progress. (2/N)
Sunny day in the Matsu Islands today. The atmosphere is laid back as usual, with tourists crowding the inter-island ferries. People remain alert towards the latest developments in the news but carry on.
It is perfectly possible to cherish a linguistic heritage that transcends national boundaries, whilst standing firmly against political annexation. Here I am, voicing Taiwan’s support for Ukraine in the Matsu Islands, with the Chinese coast sometimes visible in the distance. 4/

If a Chinese civil aircraft intentionally flew over Dongyin Island last week, it would be a serious act of provocation as it has directly entered Taiwan’s airspace. It would be more alarming than aircraft passing through Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone. 1/n
Exchanging books with Former Minister of Culture Cheng Li-chun 鄭麗君, who released a newly translated version of The Little Prince. I gave her a copy of Great Heroes of the Northern Seas, a picture book I translated from Chinese to English about military heritage in Matsu.
The opening ceremony for the Democratic Progressive Party's recently launched Lienchiang County Chapter will take place on Oct. 24. Hopefully, the new office will foster new perspectives, as the DPP seeks to build more support in offshore island counties in the Taiwan Strait.
Some are describing Pompeo's call to recognize the Republic of China (Taiwan) as provocative, yet it's actually a moderate approach. This is not a suggestion for Taiwan to declare official independence, nor does it support changing the ROC's name to the Republic of Taiwan. 1/

Taiwan's former president Ma Ying-jeou, currently in China, has doubled down on pro-Beijing rhetoric. Instead of the KMT's usual "One China, different interpretations," meaning the two sides could disagree on whether "China" meant the PRC or ROC, Ma has taken a further step. 1/

Congressional diplomacy has always been the norm for Taiwan. Traditionally, intl congressional groups have been seen as less sensitive than visits from the executive branch, or less "provocative." It's ridiculous for China to arbitrarily use any trip as an excuse for violence.

73 years since the fall of the ROC capital of Nanjing on April 23, following failed peace talks with the Communists. By December, the ROC gov. relocated to Taiwan - including my grandparents. Times have changed, but we should continue to learn from mistakes from back then.
Merry Christmas from the Matsu Islands! On this day we remember Sister Madeleine Severens, known locally as Mu Mu, a Catholic missionary from Belgium who served in Matsu from 1976 to 2001. At a time when medical resources were scarce, she helped deliver more than 1,000 babies.

As the DPP is nominating a total of 10 local candidates in Matsu this year (including me!), we plan to walk 10 times around the various islands of Matsu, according to the number of DPP candidates for each island. That would amount to walking around 160km on foot.

It also indicates diversifying political opinions in Kinmen and Matsu. Running as a non-KMT candidate may not be as daunting and unthinkable as before. Expressing views skeptical towards China might also be gaining more acceptance in local political discussions. (3/3)
