The campaign is over! We funded thanks to 165 backers helping us to pass the initial goal and smash through two stretch goals!
Thank you to everyone involved, particularly for
@cirsova
and
@stagescreen60
for all their work! It was one heck of a ride!
He spent 25 years writing a series specifically to prove Tolkien wrong, and by now it's dawned on him that he can't write a satisfying ending except to either admit his thesis was wrong, or write something nonsensical that doesn't follow with the story.
Amazing.
GRRM wants to prove Tolkien wrong. He wants the moral argument of his work to prove that the transcendent heroism and romance of Tolkien is not real, that heroes arenโt heroic and villains are sympathetic, that good does not necessarily triumph or even exist.
Remember when Lord of the Flies was based on a real story that happened but the author hated kids so much he changed the ending, and then moderns insist that said ending is "realistic" and important?
That is what I think of when I think of 20th century so-called "Great Books"
Most so-called โgreat novelsโ are absolute snoozers.
And a large chunk of them, especially those written in the 20th Century, aren't worth the time you spend deciphering theme, motif, symbolism, etc because once you do, you find they're just another paean to dissoluteness.
Big O: Can easily be continued
Outlaw Star: Literally has an open ending
Pilot Candidate: Was such a mess that anything could be done with it
Adult Swim: "Let's make endless sequels to the six episode show that had a definitive ending."
This was never going to be good.
Canโt have your cake and eat it too.
Do you want gaming communities to go back to edgy sausage parties? Fine. But be ready to lose mainstream support for your hobby and being bullied by peers for wasting your time โplaying computer gamesโ
School loved to force students to watch this and Bowling for Columbine multiple times back in the day. They just acted like these things were unquestioned dogma.
Scientists and historians, shall we launch a political party? In a novel twist, it will be informed by knowledge, expertise, reason, kindness and by people who are generally very lovely.
This game is an utter disaster.
Go play something good instead. I suggest Parasol Stars on the Turbografx. Fantastic overlooked game. It even has the subtitle Bubble Bobble 3!
>Creates one good indie game
>Acts like he's a god among men afterwards
>Has a meltdown when people tell him no
>Cancels a game he wasn't even working on
>Fades into obscurity
Uh, what did Phil Fish achieve again?
This goes beyond Marvel. Everyone should have seen this coming after the industry also recently ended the original character he is based off of. The industry does not want you to have characters like this anymore.
Marvel's editorial never liked the Punisher the reason they kept him around was because his skull sold well on merchandise.
The reason why they're retiring him now is
1. He's too edgy for the MCU
2. The Skull is now associated with the Right which damages Disney's ESG score
Some replies saying "Then boys should look for those books themselves"
Boys who have been taught for decades reading is lame, effeminate, and uncool are not going to look for counter examples to pick up a hobby.
We already know they don't. Try spouting a different catchphrase.
'90s anime censorship over here existed because of the ACT, run by people with the same politics as the people on the right side of the chart. They're literally the same group.
No evangelical had any pull over anime censorship in the west at any time.
Please stop tacking "Punk" onto the end of every wannabe genre trend. It worked with Cyberpunk because it accurately described the style & atmosphere the 70s/80s generation of writers was going for.
As a word it has now lost all meaning except for hipsters to prop themselves up.
This reductionist idiocy is why we don't get simple good vs evil stories in the west anymore.
Just because the villains in a story are aliens/a fantasy species it does not mean the writer believes everyone different than them is evil.
That's extraordinarily juvenile thinking.
Notice that in no scenario was hiring an artist even on the table to begin with.
This is where they were always going to go. Probably shouldn't have accepted all those shit modern covers, huh?
Pocket paperbacks should be the standard and common format of physical book editions. The current formats are too unwieldy for what should be a far more portable form.
I find it bizarre that a large swath of Batman and Witcher fans don't even appear to know what The Shadow and Elric even are in the first place.
You don't have to like them, but if it was me I would at least be curious as to where they came from
Razorfist videos be like:
"That thing you like actually plagiarizes a pulp character no one cares about named The Grim Tickler or something dumb like that, so that means it's bad, and I'm right about everything"
@KKalvaitis
The movie was deliberately a subversive deconstruction of the book and meant to replace it as the original work by softening the villains and theme, and villainizing and neutering the heroes. This is my
@Bdubs1776
theory and I will not be shaken from it.
Just as an anecdote, the last person I knew who read western comics finally stopped because he finally tired of the never ending reboot soap opera song and dance.
He mainly just sticks to manga web comics now.
@GlomarResponder
"Here is the director spoonfeeding his warped interpretation of someone else's work to you so you get the right meaning with no wiggle room"
No wonder film is dead. Fuck, this is embarrassing.
"Stanley Kubrick just couldnโt grasp the sheer inhuman evil of the Overlook Hotel. So he looked, instead, for evil in the characters & made 'The Shining' (1980) into a domestic tragedy with only vaguely supernatural overtones."
--- Stephen King
Important thing to realize about the anti-nostalgia for nostalgics trend is that it only exists to tell you that thing you like was incomplete until the people who hate you took control of it.
"You know your idols? The so called "great" men of the past? Well they actually SUCK! They FAILED! They were WRONG! Things have always been bad and will NEVER be better!"
Everyone should be disrespecting the "geek industry" regardless of political affiliation. Creating a lifestyle based on brand and corporate product is cringe and should be mocked. Change my mind.
Modern action movies starring quip-spouting unarmed protags charging into hordes of gun-totting terrorists to disarm and kill them all with their own weapons have really warped perception as to how real life violent confrontations actually work.
This guy couldn't DO anything.
Ever since the PS3 gutted PS2 backwards compatibility game journos have been trying to find ways to excuse companies excluding BC in their newer consoles
It should be mandatory. There is no reason every system shouldn't have it.
Like I said, the industry has always hated anything that didn't go along with its agenda to turn the medium into bad movies.
You were told to hate 2D, arcade design, and Japan, specifically for this reason.
Man it must suck having grown up in the 80โs, maybe the worst decade when it comes to TV, Movies, and Music just to see everything done better for the next FOUR decades. What a terrible era to have childhood nostalgia for
True story: the reason The Simpsons dropped in quality was because all the old writers were gone by season 10.
They went on to make, direct, and write for, Futurama and King of the Hill.
The current Simpsons writers have been treading water for over 20 years now.
Arguing "Get woke, go broke" is a losing battle because these people literally don't care if there's an audience for what they do. They're going to get it out there regardless because the message is just that important.
It's not about entertainment, and it never was.
Always wondered why some obsess over this hoary plot that has had no nuance or interesting twists while being rehashed for like several decades straight and get salty when anyone dares point it out.
Then I realized it is because the hackery affirms their shallow religious views.
I'm fascinated with this Nintendo 64 game called Wonder Project J2, It's one of the few 2D games in it, with a cute art style and really good animations. You assist a robot girl and teach her to be a human after her creator has died. It has a very interesting plot aswell.
There isn't anything controversial here. His point is that people who don't like, understand, or want anything to do with people, obviously have problems creating art and entertainment that connects with people.
Too many are getting put off by the language and missing the point.
All kinds of teachers in the replies, not a single one considers assigning better books, or holding the industry accountable for not producing what kids want to read.
You've had decades since Goosebumps to realize the problem. At this point, it's your fault.
The "reading is magical" crowd from back in the day made reading uncool and they've kept it that way since. The industry never recovered from this image:
Yes, anime was advertised as the cool underground adult alternative and focused on action and adventure.
As a consequence, it became popular with a lot of normal folk which eventually lead to its mainstream popularity overseas.
Ever wondered how anime used to be advertised in America? Here's a 1999 ad for the "The Best of Anime II" on VHS, which I just discovered on an old tape and losslessly converted.
> Make Gears of War 1-3
> Define cover based thrid person shooters for a decade
> Start own game studio
> Chase trends like an idiot and fail to make good and/or successful game
> Become total laughing stock of the internet
> Get owned by the Dilbert guy on Twitter
"Why don't kids want to read?"
I don't know, why does the Reading Industry not give them something they want to read?
There is nothing to discuss if you can't ask yourself that question.
Never going to fail to make me laugh how "antiestablishment punks" fooled themselves into thinking they were rebels by obeying government fiat.
Freethinkers really are the most brainwashed.

I got fed up with D&D when I was a kid because no one knew how to play the game and everyone had different rules. When I asked why I was greeted with hippie-esque "it's all imagination so make up whatever rule you want!"
So I moved to video games where the rules were concrete.
@DemilichJim
This isn't art, and it's not an art world.
It's a bunch of upper class urbanites laundering money to each other, and a bunch of wannabe brainlets begging to sit at their table.
Millie Bobby Brown says she doesnโt really watch movies because โI just canโt sit there & look at the screen for that longโ
โPeople come up to me and say, โYou should definitely watch this movie, it would change your lifeโ. Iโm like, โHow long do I have to sit there for?โ
The majority of people who leave high school these days never read again.
High school destroys reading for teenagers and they carry it into adulthood.
"Mundane" stories being forced on them doesn't help.

Was talking about the problem of "reluctant readers" with a school librarian friend a few years ago. Realized in short order that's actually code for "boys." And part of the problem is there's a huge dearth of good action adventure books on the shelves for them these days. 1/?
Rock Band and Guitar Hero helped introduce an entire generation to rock music. Even bands like Rush said they got a lot of new fans through their inclusion in these games.
He started the series as a loser who got overshadowed by Goku and worked his way up to being a moral paragon of the series facing off against every threat along the way. He reforms the androids by refusing to kill them and tries to turn them back to humans with the dragon balls.
Remember when the guy who put the Boston bomber on the Rolling Stone cover decided to get snarky with people who called them out for it instead of admitting being wrong?
Rolling Stone wouldn't know the first thing about having a conscience.
My favorite part of the people disagreeing with this is that every single one is using a different event to deboonk it, and yet every single one of these events still achieved the opposite results of the book.
Some of you guys REALLY want to hate humanity.
Remember when Lord of the Flies was based on a real story that happened but the author hated kids so much he changed the ending, and then moderns insist that said ending is "realistic" and important?
That is what I think of when I think of 20th century so-called "Great Books"
Sherri Stoner served as the animation model for Ariel in The Little Mermaid (1989) as well as Belle in Beauty and the Beast (1991). Ariel's lower lip biting and Belle's habit of brushing hair away from her face were both Stoner's mannerisms that animators later incorporated intoโฆ
I'm dead serious btw
Almost every single bad decision can find at its root, partially or entirely, "hey this looks cool, lets do it regardless of the consequences!"
And it explains *so much* about the movie and its defenders once you realize that
