First preprint from the lab! 🥳 We serendipitously discovered an unconventional type of multicellular development for choanoflagellates: mixed clonal-aggregative multicellularity. A (long, sorry) 🧵 summarizing our main findings ⬇️

Am I the only one to be confused by baby Yoda's morphology? Compared to old Yoda, it does have proportionately larger eyes, but a seemingly tiny/flat brain case. This differs from the ontogenetic allometry in humans (and all mammals?), whose babies have larger and rounder heads.

Two metazoan-like (probable) neuropeptides discovered in choanos! exciting to contemplate what they might be doing

Did neuropeptides evolve before neurons? We have identified the first neuropeptide precursors in sponges and choanoflagellates, and they seem to be homologous to bilaterian precursors. Thanks to @JekelyLab for the full support and guidance to perform this

Immensely looking forward to #EED2024 in Helsinki, with symposia on a lot of my favorite topics - evolution of morphogenesis, developmental constraints, developmental system drift, eco-evo-devo, and of course evo of multicellularity/evo cell bio/protistology! Join us!

Same for 'higher animals'. Darwin put it as well as anyone else: "It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another."

'Higher eukaryotes', please stop using this term, it is so loaded with ill-defined assumptions. If you're describing complexity, do that, but with context because us animals are not always more complex. Higher eukaryotes are the ones on mountains. Some prokaryotes are even higher

What an opus! A plethora of new sponge cell types, an ancient role for nitric oxide in sensory-contractile cells, and a possible evolutionary link between neurons and immune cells (and their respective synapses) - plus much, much more. Congrats Jake Musser, @wormduty et al!

Thomas Cavalier-Smith's final - and posthumous 😢 - paper: a monumental 100-page monograph on the evolution of the ciliary transition zone. In typical TCS fashion, this is not *only* an encyclopedic synthesis, but is also full of bold, clever, and though-provoking hypotheses.

The last (sadly) masterly mega-paper from Tom Cavalier-Smith, on ciliary transition zone evolution. Published posthumously in Protoplasma. My appreciation in a thread. 1/25

Ichthyosporeans have a cell layer that resembles an epithelium and forms by a Drosophila-like cellularization mechanism. Great to see such beautiful cell biology in unicellular relatives of animals!
