Proud to serve as the Superintendent for Big Spring ISD🤘Father to 2 great kids😃Grandfather to 3 amazing grandkids🙏Beginning my 41st year in education 🤘
I have a proposal for
@GovAbbott
- Poll the Superintendents of our great state and get their opinion of school vouchers. If you truly want to know the pulse of public education, and what the real issues that need to be addressed, simply ask! I will be waiting for my call!
The Governor appoints the TEA Commissioner, TEA sets the curriculum, and our teachers follow the curriculum set by the state. (Does the acronym TEKS mean anything to you Greg) The lies have got to stop, and for
@GovAbbott
to honestly believe Texans are buying into this is crazy!
Honestly, this is NOT leadership, and all of Texas should be able to see it very clearly now. The man is obsessed with vouchers, and he is using our teachers as bargaining chips in his desire to bring down public education. This is is totally unacceptable!
This is our State leadership who is literally taking Millions in donations. The few rich controlling what Public Ed will become & holding funding, raises & educational growth hostage until it passes. Is that the leadership you & I voted for? Disappointing & unprofessional.
TEA has done something I thought I would never see in my time in education. They actually changed the rules of the game in the middle of the game, and have set up schools all across our state to essentially fail! Plain and simple it is unethical, unfair, and simply wrong!
🚨 Be informed. Please take the time to read.
What TEA is doing is an injustice to
#txed
school systems, especially those serving high percentages of students from poverty.
We could see high performing schools be downgraded letter grades. For instance, our HS saw growth
"Leander ISD is strongly opposed to any form of voucher, and no amount of money the legislature can offer will change our minds. We are public school. We serve ALL."

Texans across our state have made it clear: NOW is the time for school choice in Texas.
If you support school choice, don’t sit on the sidelines.
Join our team.
Call your state representative and tell them to support education freedom for every family.
Amen! Thank you for standing up for our kids and teachers. Time for the Governor and the State Senate to step up and do what's right when it comes to funding public education in Texas.
Public schools serve 5.4 million kids & are funded $40 billion below the natl average in per pupil $. Our teachers make $7000 below the natl average in pay.
We must fix the basics & ensure the best teacher in the classroom for
#TxEd
school children. No gimmicks. No vouchers.
For a state that
@GregAbbott_TX
constantly brags about it's wealth and economic growth, this is unacceptable! When are our state legislators and Governor going to step up and address the real issue in public education? Fully fund public education and take care of our kids!!
I didn't recognize the football team
@GregAbbott_TX
?? What public school were you at on that Friday night? Oh, that's right, you do not visit public schools, just spend time running them down to support your voucher plan!
NOW is the time for school choice in Texas.
To every Texan who supports school choice: join our team.
Contact your State Representative and tell them to vote for education freedom for EVERY Texas family.
Which blows a hole in Abbott's "failing" schools rhetoric he has been spewing for the last several months. Of course he and TEA changed the rules in the middle of the game by drastically raising the cut points on CCMR scores! Who does something like that after the fact?
This speaks volumes for the man and his total obsession with vouchers. Not to mention is continued effort to ruin public schools in our great state.
@GregAbbott_TX
is NOT interested in what is in the best interest of our kids!
As a mom w/ 2 kids in public schools, I am one of the millions of TX parents w/ “skin in the game” in this voucher fight.
Our teachers are the beating heart of our neighborhood
#txed
public schools. We must do better by them and not tie their pay to a voucher scam.
Wealthiest state in the Union, yet we rank towards the bottom in per student spending, and our teacher pay scale is in the bottom 25%! Wake up
@GovAbbott
and realize we are not buying your lies, and the proof is in the numbers.
#BREAKING
: By a vote of 86-52 the House has voted to ban school vouchers from the state budget. This isn’t the end of the road for school choice (Abbott could line item veto), but it’s not a good indication for school choice in the House.
#txlege
Very well said my friend! The state of Texas has been failing public schools for years, and yet the Governor remains hell bent on bashing our schools and our teachers. People like you and I who are actually "in the arena", and truly invested in our kids know the truth.
Going back through the playbook & guess what’s next: call another special session, threaten Rs, visit a private school, bash a public school, yell “unions” & say kids are trapped in failing gov schools - when really kids are trapped in a failing state that won’t fund them.
Keep saying NO to vouchers, and let's all continue saying YES to public education and our kids! This is a fight worth fighting, and one that we will WIN!
So true- vouchers would not guarantee ALL kids could go anywhere they wanted. The power would still lie with the private schools as they do NOT play by the same rules we in public education do. We take ALL kids, and we educate ALL kids!
Voucher proponents must admit that private schools can deny admission to any student, like kids w/disabilities. Public schools accept all, & parents are a critical voice in the development of an individualized plan for their child. Vouchers don't guarantee admission or services!
Quick recap-
@GregAbbott_TX
is consumed with forcing vouchers on us, the legislative session has produced nothing when it comes to fully funding education, STAAR testing was changed, and CCMR weights drastically changed! Frustration is at an all-time high with public educators.
@GovAbbott
What am I missing when I read the constitution? It refers to funding public free schools. Why is our governor wasting time and money on this issue. Worst governor in the history of the state of Texas in upholding his responsibility to fund and support public education!
Excited to see that Proposition 9 passed easily tonight! A cost of living adjustment for retired teachers has been long overdue, and it was nice to see over 80% of the voters agreed!
Yet we are also the same state that cannot adequately fund our public schools, and ranks towards the bottom in money spent per student and teacher pay! Quite simply, there are NO excuses for a state as wealthy as Texas to treat our teachers and student this way.
These are facts, and
@GovAbbott
cannot argue or lie his way out of the truth about public education funding in our state. $7,500 below the national average is totally embarrassing in a state as wealthy as Texas, and our per pupil spending is inexcusable.
Gov Abbott bragged last night at a Catholic school in San Antonio about seeking to be number 1 in education. Yet, Texas ranks 41st in per pupil spending and it is 25th in public teacher pay or $7,500 below the national average.
@joshcowenMSU
@pastors4txkids
@Texans4E
The fight for public education is on, and I can assure you that all of us who have banned together to fight for the welfare of our kids will never give in, and will battle
@GregAbbott_TX
until the end!
Not listing public education funding, accountability reform, school safety, teacher pay or special-Ed funding demonstrates a lack of awareness & support for 5.5 million children. Some can be bought & paid for, but not a majority of Texans. So it begins..
ATTENTION ALL BSISD PARENTS: ALL students will eat absolutely FREE in the 2023-2024 school year! This includes breakfast and lunch for Pre K-HS students. Along with free school supplies provided by BSISD, we hope a lot of stress has been taken away from our parents.
@BigSpringISD
As a conservative, but also as a public educator who believes in doing the right thing for our kids in Texas, I strongly encourage ALL House members to support the Herrero Amendment today. The vote is simple, it's the RIGHT thing for our kids and public education.
#notovouchers
My principals and teachers are telling me the exact same thing! It is absolutely absurd to have our kids taking any test that takes over 6 hours to complete! Not to mention 3rd graders trying to type written responses on a computer when they can barely type.
@luke__allison
@TrentAshbyTX
@KingForTexas
@GregAbbott_TX
@DadePhelan
@MikeMorath
I requested feedback from our teachers regarding this exact issue.
It’s ridiculous for our young students, who are now required to take all the state-mandated exams online, to have to sit in front of a computer screen for that long to take 1 test!
Here’s one email I received:
Abbott’s “my way or the highway” when it comes to private school vouchers is putting many public schools in jeopardy. Holding public schools as hostages until he gets his way on vouchers is a form of extortion.
YES you will, and I for one truly appreciate you and the others for standing up for what is RIGHT! I have faith in the fact that you and all the others fighting for public education will not be bullied by the Governor, and will make sure we never have vouchers in Texas!
Once again, Greg Abbott is calling lawmakers back to the Capitol to pass his voucher scam.
A bipartisan majority in the Texas House has repeatedly defeated vouchers. We’ll do it again.
Don’t mess with Texas public schools.
I find it very ironic that
@GregAbbott_TX
is using the term "liar" to describe anyone!! He single handily has told more lies in the last 6 months than anyone on social media!! Hey Greg, the fact is
@DrewDarbyTX
is TRUE champion of public education, and a friend of West Texas!
Keep dreaming Brandon- this will never happen in our state! We live in a democracy, and
@GregAbbott_TX
is not a dictator who will simply get everything he wants. Vouchers are BAD for public education and bad for our kids in Texas.
Governor Abbott is serious about passing
#SB8
, my Education Freedom legislation. Thankful he made it one of his emergency items for the session. Texas will soon be the 31st state with expanded school choice.
#txlege
#txed
Once again you are dead wrong
@brianeharrison
! This is not educational freedom, this is taking money meant for public education and funneling it into private institutions that have NO accountability, NO financial transparency, and by the way, do NOT have to accept all kids!
Any school board trustee who votes against education freedom is saying they don’t trust parents and is turning their back on the voters who elected them.
#txlege
#txed
THIS👇👇is totally embarrassing, and quite frankly unacceptable! Our Governor and state legislature must do better for our kids and our educators in Texas!
@GregAbbott_TX
@DanPatrick
Totally false, and I appreciate you my friend for calling the Governor out on this comment.
@GovAbbott
is only giving the parents half the story and conveniently leaving out all of the facts. Most parents do NOT support vouchers and this rhetoric is simply false.
That’s false. Parents won’t be in charge. Private schools will. They have the final decision in selective admissions. We have to start being honest about who makes the final decision. It’s not fair to deceive parents into believing their children can attend any private school.
Anyone else find it ironic that the Senate calls this special meeting at the midnight hour on the same day as STAAR raw scores are being released? The "zone of uncertainty" is a new twist! Anything to basically make public education look bad and push vouchers down our throats.
What a joke! NOTHING about funding for public schools or teacher pay raises. If we didn't already know, it is now crystal clear
@GregAbbott_TX
cares nothing about public education, and is driven to ruin it. This is totally unacceptable!
You are a disgrace
@GovAbbott
teachers deserve a Governor who cares about public education, students and teachers…you sir don’t care about any of them. Selling out kids and teachers to the highest donor!
Sending taxpayer dollars to private schools is not good for students or for taxpayers. Private schools are not accountable for how they use the public's money. Tell your legislators to invest in Texas PUBLIC schools educating more than 5 million kids.
#txlege
#txed
Amen my friend! ALL educators need to flood the polls in support of those who truly defend public education! The March primaries are vitally important!
@DrewDarbyTX
Educators! Next week is a big week to vote. A few out of state billionaires are trying to dismantle public-ed by standing up a subsystem that isn’t conservative, transparent, inclusive of all children or will build a better future. You know who supports pub-ed in your districts!
Finally- A Texas State Representative speaks up about what harm is being done to Texas students because of laws passed by the Texas legislature. I wholeheartedly agree with Rep. Dr. .
@AlmaAllen131
FYI- Education is NOT a Republican vs Democrat issue, it is about ALL children,
WE are all fed up with a game this is essentially rigged to ensure failure on the part of our public schools across Texas. Educators, parents, and community members are not going to stand for this, and trust me, this is just the beginning for the headaches coming his way.
#txlege
Totally unacceptable by someone who was given the power to run our state by the people! The people are clearly NOT in favor of vouchers, yet
@GregAbbott_TX
continues to push his hell bent agenda on all of us with acts like this. Childish behavior by a grown adult with an agenda.
Desperate isn’t a good look. These tactics have been happening since the beginning of the session because vouchers are not wanted by a majority. If it were, then a stand alone bill on vouchers would pass on its own merit. It won’t, hence the tactics. Simple deduction.
Since private schools have no accountability, they can always say they are doing a great job and ahead of public schools. Get on the same, level playing field as us, and then I say “Game on!”
Voucher proponents use the accountability system to label schools as “failing” and they are here to “rescue” those students with a voucher to attend a “better “ school”? Yet they fear that same system being applied to their schools? If it is a better option then you should fear?
Jason, you obviously have drank the kool-aide that
@GregAbbott_TX
is selling! Texas will never go in on vouchers, simply because it's bad for kids, bad for public education, and by the way, we already have school choice!
It's time for Texas to go big on school choice or it will fall behind the growing number of states empowering their citizens to choose the schools that work best for their children. A 1/15
Hard to argue with facts
@GovAbbott
Do the right thing and give up on the voucher circus tour to every private school you can find. 41st in the nation on per pupil spending is totally embarrassing for a state as wealthy as Texas. Do the right thing!
TX has $33B in surplus & $27B in the Rainy Day fund, but not enough to keep up with inflation for public ed? Why not bust the spending cap that
#txlege
created & can kill w/ a 2/3 vote? We can have prop tax relief AND keep up w/inflation for
#txed
w/$14B.
#justfundittx
Great to see another school district joining
@BigSpringISD
and more than 50 other districts taking a stand against was it is morally and legally wrong! I am in my 41st year in education, and I have never witnessed school districts rising up and fighting TEA in a unified voice!
After closed session, the
#LISDBoard
reconvened and passed a resolution to join a lawsuit against the Texas Education Agency regarding the A-F Accountability System. More details to come in
#BoardBriefs
.
To be clear
@GregAbbott_TX
you attached vouchers to pub-Ed funding. If you cared about children & teachers you would allow both issues to stand alone, independent of one another. Why haven’t you funded pub-Ed w/out vouchers? It would pass easily like it has in previous sessions.
Gov. Abbott announced a 30-day special session to begin Oct. 9 to provide private school subsidies, also known as vouchers, or education savings accounts.
@TomballISD
strongly opposes vouchers in any form. Public $'s belong in Public Schools
#TeamTomball
#DestinationExcellence
I think this sums it up! TEA will need to step up on waivers and/or ways NOT to penalize districts due to lack of minutes. Safety is our
#1
priority at this point, not worrying about “pushing” our kids and staff back before it’s safe! Most of our town has NO power!🤘
Amen! This has honestly became almost laughable what the Governor is trying to force down our throats. He announces this while the House is in session, knowing they did not have a quorum in an effort to blame the lack of teacher pay raises on the House!
From $8,000 to $10,400 for ESAs! So let’s make sure that keeps up with inflation while public schools continue to suffer from poor legislation!
#txed
#txlege
Public schools need an increase of $1,000 to the Basic Allotment just to keep up with inflation since 2019!
No deal!
A year? I have an idea for you Senator. Simply put together a committee made up of teachers and administrators across the state, and trust me they would help put together meaningful legislation that would actually BENEFIT our educators! Oh, and it would not take a year.
For the last year, I have been working to craft legislation that gives our Texas educators meaningful compensation, bonus opportunities, added benefits, and mentorship programs to train the next generation of classroom teachers. To allow SB 9, the strongest teacher bill of
You are absolutely right my friend. The legislators have continued to let millions of kids down during this session, and all of us would like explanations. Quit wasting time on vouchers, and spend the last few weeks doing meaningful work that would truly benefit our kids!
There is no acceptable explanation to the families of 5.5 million children, business owners, community members and spiritual leaders as to why there’s no legislation appropriately funding children, teachers and school safety.
@GovAbbott
A majority of Texans agree: now is the time for you to do your job and adequately fund public schools in Texas.
Parents have the freedom to choose the education pathway that best fits their child and their family.
Adequate public school funding makes that possible.
Once again our state legislators have let our kids and our teachers down. This session proved without a shadow of a doubt the lengths our Governor and many GOP Senators would go to force vouchers down our throat. Sad, sad day in Texas!
All of us in public education sensed this all along, and this just confirmed it. Politicians holding public educators hostage over the voucher issue! This is truly sickening, and simply shows the disrespect many of our state legislators have for teachers in Texas.
For the 4th year in a row
@BigSpringISD
will be purchasing ALL school supplies for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. The Board last night took my recommendation and approved this purchase to help ease the minds of our parents/guardians on the upcoming school year! Go Steers!🤘
Amen my friend. I too have invited the Governor and/or any state legislators to
@BigSpringISD
as well. I have not hear a response as of yet, but am still waiting patiently. So many public schools doing so many great things across our state, yet the attacks continue.
Hundreds of Texas school board members
@tasbnews
representing districts from across our state, just voted 90.9% to 9.1% to adopt language calling for opposition to use of public funds for vouchers. This represents the voice of a broad group of Texas communities & voters.
Amen! Our patience is gone, and we cannot believe the Governor and other state officials are using vouchers as a bargaining chip to help public education! Our kids deserve so much better!
#txlege
#novouchers
School leaders have no patience & no time for the political gamesmanship happening at
#txlege
.
They know that kids are not political pawns—they are our future. It’s past time to just fully fund our public schools.
No deals, no gimmicks, no vouchers.
If you believe what you are preaching then make sure accountability testing follows the money to private schools as well. Oh, and on a side note, make sure the private schools take ALL kids, not just those who “meet” their standards! Deal??
Schools are for education, NOT indoctrination.
We must reform curriculum, get kids back to the basics of learning, and empower parents to choose the best school for their child through education freedom.
Changing the rules of the game in the middle of the game is NOT fair, and yet the Commissioner does not seem to care! Give us the rules, and trust me we will answer the bell, but changing the rules along the way is underhanded and simply asinine.
You are so wrong! Texans do NOT support this bill, and for the record our parents already have school choice. Get off your soapbox for a losing cause and invest your time in things that Texans DO care about like fully funding our public schools!
I remain committed to the Texas Parental Bill of Rights, because lawmakers know that Texans overwhelmingly support school choice. This session is a once in a generation opportunity to unleash the potential of education freedom, and I am confident there is still time to empower
THIS. These voucher bills strip special needs students of their federal rights. Don’t believe me? Here’s the provision - it was in ALL of the voucher bills this session. This one is from SB 8.
Moving the bar in the middle of the game is unethical, unfair, and a slap in the face to those teachers, administrators, and students working so hard to make progress on an accountability system now set up to ensure failure!
@teainfo
and our Commissioner should be ashamed!
Some school districts are suing over changes to the A-F accountability system. Under the updated system, districts could receive a lower grade even if they performed better.
What strides did you make to fully fund public education? What have you done to address the major issues behind our continued teacher shortage? Finally, what have you done to address the unfair and unethical tactics used by
@teainfo
on most recent STAAR tests? Step up or step out
Texas made great strides this year to remove woke agendas from our classrooms, support students with special needs, and provide parents access to libraries and curriculum.
We won't stop there.
To fully empower Texas parents, we MUST deliver school choice to every family.
@GovAbbott
You have done absolutely nothing for public schools and the thousands of dedicated educators across Texas! Let me remind you of this- we have a $33 billion (with a B) surplus!
@DonHuffines
You have absolutely NO clue about what truly goes on in classrooms across our great state! The constant lies you are spreading is truly pathetic, and all of us actually involved in public education know the TRUTH!
#NoVouchers
#standupforpubliceducation
What have you done for our current Texas teachers and students? The answer is absolutely nothing! While you hold on to a $33 billion surplus, schools are not fully funded, and our teacher pay ranks in the bottom 10% of the nation. Step up or get out!
This year, I signed a law to boost income for retired Texas teachers.
Proud of their hard work and grateful for their efforts to shape the leaders of tomorrow.
Texas teachers, students, and the parents who support them are vital to the future of our great state.
He has no interest in helping our kids in public education. This has been made very clear by him and his GOP cronies in the Senate. It's way past time for him to step up and do the RIGHT thing for ALL of our kids in public schools in Texas!
If
@GregAbbott_TX
had a sincere desire to empower parents in their child’s education, he would declare the $4.6 Billion Special Education deficit the emergency it is & add it to the Special Session so kids can get the education they deserve.
@expressnews
I strongly urge all of my fellow public educators to get out and vote today! Remember those who stood strong for public education, and those who opposed vouchers!
#vote
#publiceducation
That is such an untrue statement, and it's a slap in the face to all board trustees who care about public education and the kids in their districts! NOBODY is turning their backs on parents, but instead standing up for what is right. Vouchers are wrong!
Texas public schools welcome and accept all students. Private schools that accept Education Savings Accounts and vouchers are not required to adhere to federal IDEA standards, failing Texas students.

STAAR is a flawed test; it always has been. Teachers, students, admins, and districts gain nothing--only Pearson and all the offshoot companies that profit from ancillary materials and textbooks relevant to the flawed test.
NEW: A Travis County judge just ordered the Texas Education Agency not to release its annual A-F school ratings. 100+ districts sued the education commissioner alleging his agency didn’t adequately notify them of changes to how it would be calculated.
@KXAN_News
It’s true all across Texas, and everyone is feeling the stress of trying to explain how your kids grew, but somehow your accountability grade dropped a letter grade! Unfair, unethical, and flat out wrong!
"I do believe this is setting up our school districts to look bad right before we go into a special session on vouchers," Hinojosa said, "and our school districts and their leaders are expressing to me they believe the same."

Fact: just because you do a photo op in Mineral Wells doesn’t mean that you know anything about what Rural Texans want.
Spoiler alert. We don’t want vouchers.
