Schools have parents that refuse their child to take the STAAR test. Some refuse to send their kids to school for regular attendance. If
@GregAbbott_TX
is about “parent rights” then why does TEA penalize districts for these parental choices? This “phrase” is used when convenient.
.
@tedcruz
says he believes voucher programs that let parents take their kids out of public schools and enroll them into private ones using taxpayers' money, often referred to as "school choice," are the "civil rights issue of the 21st century."
#TribFest23
Why are we lying to parents. Parents don’t have the ultimate choice. Selective admissions in private school select and deselect students. Tuition rates that exceed the voucher and no transportation will eliminate so many students from eligibility. Tell our parents the truth.
Parents MUST have the freedom to choose the education pathway that best fits their child's learning needs.
That's why I made education freedom an emergency item this session.
NOW is the time for school choice in Texas.
I wonder if the amount of money spent in standardized testing would be enough to cover access & devices for all our low income students in Texas? My guess is that would be a heroic & memorable decision in moving education forward in Texas.
#myvote4sure
I agree with
@GovAbbott
. There’s more work to do:
1. TX is 49th in teacher retirement benefits.
2. TX is 42nd in public education funding.
3. TX is 43rd in teacher pay
4. TX is 2nd in school shootings.
This year, I signed laws to get woke agendas out of Texas classrooms and restore parental rights in education.
We made great progress, but there is more work to be done.
Now is the time for school choice in Texas.
Going back through the playbook & guess what’s next: call another special session, threaten Rs, visit a private school, bash a public school, yell “unions” & say kids are trapped in failing gov schools - when really kids are trapped in a failing state that won’t fund them.
I will continue advancing school choice in the Texas Legislature and at the ballot box, and will maintain the fight for parent empowerment until all parents can choose the best education path for their child.
I am in it to win it.
Greg Abbott is trying to defund our schools with a private school voucher scam.
Not on our watch.
Today I joined my colleagues to introduce the Fully Fund our Future Act which will invest in ALL students and give every teacher a $15,000 raise.
#txlege
If “Texas has an obligation to provide the best possible education for each child” then it stands to reason that starting with the masses - fully funding pub-ed - would be the right place to begin.
Parents have a God-given right to decide what is best for their child’s education.
Texas has an obligation to provide the best possible education for each child.
I called Special Session
#3
to pass school choice for every family in Texas.
Texas will deliver.
@TPPF
#txlege
To be clear
@GregAbbott_TX
you attached vouchers to pub-Ed funding. If you cared about children & teachers you would allow both issues to stand alone, independent of one another. Why haven’t you funded pub-Ed w/out vouchers? It would pass easily like it has in previous sessions.
To be clear:
Hugh Shine voted to stop a bill that included $6 billion in funding for public schools & teacher pay raises, more money for school security, and an end to the STAAR test.
Hillary Hickland would have supported that bill.
One of many reasons I support Hillary
I’m a conservative & don’t support taxpayer dollars spent without accountability, modern day segregation or false narratives portraying vouchers as “parent choice”. The reality is parents don’t get the 💰or choice - the non-public schools get to select the students they want.
Conservatives strongly support school choice.
Liberals are against school choice.
Makes you wonder about the Republican Texas House members who voted with the liberals against school choice.
A change is coming on March 5th.
Not listing public education funding, accountability reform, school safety, teacher pay or special-Ed funding demonstrates a lack of awareness & support for 5.5 million children. Some can be bought & paid for, but not a majority of Texans. So it begins..
If this is the case
@GregAbbott_TX
then have a voucher bill stand alone & put it to a vote instead of hiding behind push polls or paid polls. Let the “majority” speak on vouchers by their own merits vs attaching to pub-ed funding as the only means to get it passed! We all know!
Texans now support school choice by more than a 2 to 1 margin.
Legislators who are against it, are simply against their own constituents.
They will have a chance to vote on it in an upcoming special session.
As ISDs adopt budgets & compensation for schools, I’m reminded of
@GovAbbott
Teacher Vacancy Task Report’s top recommendation: “Increase overall compensation and support strategic compensation strategies”. Credibility isn’t measured by a task force, but rather the response.
There’s no greater endorsement for Texas Public Schools than comments like this from
@GovAbbott
that reference our products as major contributors in society. Could you imagine a Texas where our public schools were fully funded? Congrats to TX public educators! Proud of you all👏!
My daughter is a 1st yr kindergarten teacher at
@GilmerISDProud
& today we drove up to help set up her empty classroom. We are almost finished. She is so excited to welcome her little ones! I learned firsthand what out of pocket costs are to new teachers. Your up next TX Leg! 💰
That’s false. Parents won’t be in charge. Private schools will. They have the final decision in selective admissions. We have to start being honest about who makes the final decision. It’s not fair to deceive parents into believing their children can attend any private school.
It’s just a fact. A majority of Texans support school choice.
It’s all about the fact that mom and dad are in charge— not superintendents, not school buildings, it’s mom and dad who are in charge of the children we are trying to educate in Texas.
It is only a “choice” for a “few” parents due to selective admissions, transportation and costs, while public education serves all. Investing in all promotes a healthy society. Investing in a few promotes a divided society.
Texas students are the future of our state.
Every child must have access to an education that meets his or her unique learning needs.
School choice gives parents the freedom to choose the best pathway for their child.
Decoded = when my priority doesn’t align w/ the majority & I don’t get my way, I threaten people w/ vetoes & special sessions ahead of the process. Not leadership, not democracy. This further hardens Rs & Ds against vouchers. They’ll deliver you more losses until you listen.
Told by TEA that STAAR testing online has completely crashed across the region & perhaps the state. Now we have to ask remote learners to come back again? Was taking the STAAR test really worth it? State wants to stand up virtual school options???
As ISDs are preparing for budgets, remember TX has no financial crisis, but rather a manufactured political crisis used as an excuse to not fund schools. We will watch the bad actions of a few effect many selfless people that will be casualties of budget cuts. Poor legacy indeed.
Let’s lift up our educators & not tear them down. There are a few bad apples in public service (politicians, cops, educators, priests), but a clear majority do the right things.
Vouchers aren’t a partisan issue, which is why many conservatives, like myself, haven’t supported it.
Schools shouldn’t push woke agendas – period.
That’s why I signed laws to remove woke politics from Texas classrooms.
In Texas, we’re getting kids back to the basics of learning.
Eva Mireles and Irma Garcia were the two fourth grade teachers killed in a mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Family members said both died trying to protect their students. It doesn’t surprise me that Texas teachers are heroes, nor should it anyone else. RIPHeroes!
I heard
@GovAbbott
may be in Temple today. If so, I would like to cast my 4th invitation to take you to visit public schools, children, businesses & teachers. They would love to talk to you about our schools & have you answer questions around funding/future support. Let me know!
As Supt. I’ve learned the effect my expressions have on those I serve - showing ❤️ to my parents, children, staff, military, police, pastors, etc. The same would be true if I didn’t show ❤️.
@GregAbbott_TX
I wish you would think about your effect when speaking about TX educators.
We will not use Texas taxpayer dollars to teach our children to hate our country.
This session, we will remove woke agendas from the classroom and get kids back to the basics of learning.
This quote about Jordan hit me, “His gift was not that he could jump high, run fast, shoot a basketball. His gift was that he was completely present. That was the separator.” — As educators, I’m not sure there’s a more relevant time to be “present” for those we serve than now!
Educators! Next week is a big week to vote. A few out of state billionaires are trying to dismantle public-ed by standing up a subsystem that isn’t conservative, transparent, inclusive of all children or will build a better future. You know who supports pub-ed in your districts!
The House Public Ed Committee took no vote on vouchers today. If the support were there, action would have been taken. This is three losses for this so called “priority”. Next, millions of taxpayer dollars spent on a special session for someone’s personal political ambition.
A majority of Texans from every community across our state support school choice.
We have an opportunity this session to deliver education freedom to millions of Texas families.
They deserve the time & effort it will take to get this across the finish line.
In this historic moment
@TempleISD
&
@BeltonISD
school boards came together to adopt a joint resolution for legislative priorities going into the special session:
1. Increase basic allotment
2. Accountability & Assessment Reform
3. No diversion of public funds towards vouchers
There is no acceptable explanation to the families of 5.5 million children, business owners, community members and spiritual leaders as to why there’s no legislation appropriately funding children, teachers and school safety.
With just over a week remaining in the 88th legislative session, we call on the Texas Senate to fund Texas public schools, not voucher schemes. Full statement:
Parents that live in a state with a surplus deserve to attend an adequately funded and well-provisioned school. This falls on state leadership - not parents or ISD staff.
Here in Texas, parents deserve to be in charge of their child’s education.
I signed a law last year to ensure every parent has the authority to determine if their child should repeat a grade level.
Parents know what is best for their child. In Texas, we will keep it that way.
Enjoyed the opportunity to represent public schools in testimony at the Public House Special Committee on Education. Grateful for the opportunity! Appreciate our legislators for their collaboration.
How can any person guarantee a special needs child would receive better services than public education if non-public education systems have no basic service requirements? Further, the proposed bills state this as well.
Gov Abbott talks to a mom that has disabled child. He told her that “school choice” would take care of her child’s needs. Not true. SB 8 says “a private school is not subject to state and local laws regarding the provision of educational services to a child with a disability”.
I hate being the truth serum, but the Texas Commission on Special Education Funding Report to the 88th TX Legislature showed special needs students in TX are underfunded by 2 billion. TX schools received no revenue. Full report is here
Honesty is better!
Texas made great strides this year to remove woke agendas from our classrooms, support students with special needs, and provide parents access to libraries and curriculum.
We won't stop there.
To fully empower Texas parents, we MUST deliver school choice to every family.
For all my Republican colleagues who keep talking about failed public schools, let’s go visit one, find out what the problem is, and help them succeed. Instead of pulling a few kids out of the school, it’s our obligation to help the school succeed.
#txlege
It is interesting to watch politicians equate “choice”with quality when we have yet to see an accountability system for non-public schools. So, how does any member of the public know non-public schools are “quality”? 🤔
Gov
@GregAbbott_TX
has been courageous in demanding UNIVERSAL
#SchoolChoice
.
#Txlege
must be equally courageous.
EVERY child deserves a quality education!
EVERY parent deserves education freedom!
I would like to thank the Friends of Texas Public Schools for this extraordinary honor - 2023 Ambassador of the Year! God bless all of our amazing educators. This is for those in the arena!
Desperate isn’t a good look. These tactics have been happening since the beginning of the session because vouchers are not wanted by a majority. If it were, then a stand alone bill on vouchers would pass on its own merit. It won’t, hence the tactics. Simple deduction.
Gov
@GregAbbott_TX
now targeting school voucher opponents with his vetoes. He is now saying that certain bills can only be considered in a future special session after about a voucher bill passes

Public Schools = transparent reporting, representative governance, required services & public accountability
Vouchers = unregulated systems, selective services & no public accounting
Groups that claim fiscal responsibility support this type of spending?
Just tell the truth.

If school choice was as popular as you say, make it a bill on its own, put it to a vote and see what happens. Then put public school funding in a separate bill and see what happens.
Hugh Shine will be elected or defeated by the voters in his district — 89% of which support school choice.
Republican primary voters are tired of and angry about House members who vote against what their constituents want.
@HicklandHillary
will support the voters of HD 55.
Seven years ago I took my Wildcat Mentee to a home football game. He said one day he would play for the Wildcats. Tonight he walks off the same field as a Bi-District Champion. Proud of you Falyn! Keep up the good work! 🏆
Even though high schools improved in all areas, ratings will most likely drop across TX as a result of implementing new cut scores without a transition year. This is an unprecedented method of applying new standards, which confirms many political suspicions. Time will tell.
Students across Bell County — including those in the Temple, Belton and Salado school districts — showed improvements across the board for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, according to Texas Education Agency data from the 2022-2…
With very few days left in the session, it would go a long way to have a state leader that encouraged legislation around school safety, special education funding, educator compensation and student allotment increases. This is important to parents.
Texas parents – and their children – must have education freedom.
Expanding school choice for every family in Texas will help our students thrive.
Now is the time to make it happen.
#txlege
The real “choice” in this proposed system doesn’t rest with our parents. The real choice rests in the selective admissions process of non-public schools, which will return us to segregation - a part of our history we should never repeat.
Temple ISD Superintendent Bobby Ott has fielded questions about school choice vouchers for the past week — an emergency legislative item that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott promoted during a visit to Temple.
Football players wore their jerseys today and showed up to the HS Band Marching Competition to support the band that supports them during their games. This is the culture we have in Temple, Texas.
#TempleISDProud
Most schools will increase in performance, but drop in ratings. The timing couldn’t be more obvious. ISDs will just focus on their families, kids & community because politics will cannibalize itself. Local communities already see it for what it is & stand by their schools.
Even
@teainfo
admits that under their new accountability rules, schools can see their ratings drop even if student performance improves. Dallas ISD has a B rating; under these new rules, we would be a C district. Same data, different rules.
On April 19, 2018, my life changed forever. Five yrs ago, with my family by my side, I signed my first contract as Superintendent. I have just completed my 5th yr serving countless numbers of children, staff & a community that I adore. Thank you
@TempleISD
for believing in me.
Turning down the opportunity to feed the hungry (below) and pushing an agenda to feed the full (wealthy who gain from vouchers) is nowhere in the same universe as Christian conservative values. Hurts my heart. Hurts the future of TX.
@GovAbbott
you can fix this!
This year, 35 states will participate in a $2.5 billion federal nutrition program that will help low-income parents buy groceries for their kids in the summer.
But Texas, which has 3.8 million kids eligible for the program, has opted out of the effort.
Private schools don’t have to honor disciplinary placements from public schools. Easy to parachute and avoid consequences. Wouldn’t be difficult to list one loophole a day for the entire 30 days of this special session.
As
@OttTempleISD
has pointed out already,
@SenCreighton
's
#sb1
voucher bill pays private schools based on enrollment not attendance. Public ISDs/Charters are only paid for actual student attendance (not just enrollment), why aren't vouchers proposed in same manner?
#txlege
“Those Parents” that private schools don’t reject, can provide their own transportation, can cover the difference in tuition, don’t have disciplinary infractions and don’t require special services?
Could not be more proud to stand alongside of my colleagues to do “the right thing” for our children & teachers. Business communities, parents and children will not settle for being in the bottom 10 states in funding and expecting top 5 results. The majority of TX stands!
This is how public educators feel when politicians withhold financial support hostage for vouchers. Political games don’t seem so fun when they are played on you.

Easy fix -
1. Remove vouchers & put it in its own bill. Then see what passes & what doesn’t.
2. Have the pro-voucher funders take their 💰 back from Abbott & use it to start up tuition-free private schools across TX
Then you accomplish both.
For the last year, I have been working to craft legislation that gives our Texas educators meaningful compensation, bonus opportunities, added benefits, and mentorship programs to train the next generation of classroom teachers. To allow SB 9, the strongest teacher bill of…
If you are serious about parent choice then why do those that have kids in college instead of PK-12 schools not allowed to take their “voucher” to offset college tuition? Why does proposed voucher language fund privates on enrollment vs funding pub-ed on attendance?
@Toth_4_Texas
This is where your argument folds back on itself because no choice exists under a voucher plan due to access, selective admissions and no transportation. This is precisely why fully funding public schools is the right answer.

@DanPatrick
& some Senators - if school starts next year without safety 💰, due to vouchers, & a tragedy (God forbid) occurs, TX will never forget what your “priorities” were. This will be a bipartisan sentiment.

@GregAbbott_TX
promised to fully fund public schools.He failed
Completely false. The “majority” doesn’t support school choice, which is why this is the second house vote against it, even with the known tactics of reps being “primaried”. Polls from primaries represent about 5% of voters & nowhere close to a general election poll.
I remain committed to the Texas Parental Bill of Rights, because lawmakers know that Texans overwhelmingly support school choice. This session is a once in a generation opportunity to unleash the potential of education freedom, and I am confident there is still time to empower…

Segregation = institutions choosing which students they accept no matter what school the parent wants their child to attend.

The irony of this slide is TEA has asked for more time to calculate ratings based on their new accountability changes.
However, they didn’t provide teachers and schools more time (a transition year) to adjust to the assessment changes.

There are so many sensible funding priorities to consider: school safety, enrollment-based per pupil, special-ed, teacher recruitment, staff compensation, basic allotment, accountability & assessment reform, SEL supports etc.
Following this example won’t make TX a leader.
Head of AZ ESA voucher program resigns abruptly as well as the operations chief for the program. It is projected that the voucher program is going to cause a state budget deficit of $319M. Texas voucher legislation was based on AZ law.
Thankful for the
@TempleChamber
for adopting the joint Proclamation between TISD & BISD opposing vouchers & supporting increase in public-Ed funding. Chambers know the impact their local ISDs have on bringing in business & know that dismantling pub-Ed hurts local economies.
Parents of public school kids also matter - so fully fund them, as opposed to funding them less than your voucher. All parents matter, so why do non-public schools get to pick and choose which kids they accept?
Parents matter — period.
This session, we must restore parents as the primary decisionmakers in their child’s education.
NOW is the time for school choice in Texas.
Mom and dad won’t have the choice - the selective admissions office of the non-public schools will have the final say. Good policy starts with honest public dialogue. Honest dialogue eliminates the need for desperate tactics Rs & Ds have witnessed over this issue.
The numbers don't lie: a majority of Texans from rural, urban, and suburban communities support school choice.
Parents know what's best for their children's education.
This session, we must put mom and dad back in charge.
There is only one entity that truly stands for “all kids” and that is public education. This is the reason prioritizing it should be at the top of the list.
