If I told you there’s an album from 2002 with: MF Doom, The Deftones, A-Trak, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, and the Beatnuts, that no one under the age of 35 has ever heard would you want to hear it
the website that publishes four reviews daily often of experimental and art music just got gutted and a bunch of podcast parasocial gossip addicts are excited for what this means about Poptimism, absolute morons
RIP pac man, the jacka, speaker knockerz, lil snupe, young pappy, la Capone, Fredo Santana, doe b, trouble, bankroll fresh, chinx, slim dunkin … just some names i haven’t seen much who contributed a lot
This is a mental guardrail a lot of ppl make & assume to be true but our time on this earth is limited and the amount of bullshit music is not. But also, the audience of the critic is for people who like to read writing about music — not all music fans
but i understand why the music critic went the way of the dodo. music critics used to basically tell you what albums were worth spending money on. in the streaming age there’s no risk involved in listening to a bad album. all you lose is a couple minutes of your time, not 20 bux
g funk was one of the coolest sounds to ever become a musical cliche. I never tire of it lol. whats crazy is there was this period where that became the sound of bleakness, the way some might describe drill [general sense not new york sense] today
@ashleylynch
So many late 90s films are about the absolute horrors of having a stable job.
Matrix, fight club, office space, American beauty etc.
It aged like fuckin milk
People are so dismissive of the end of these publications when they are like well kids on YouTube or tiktok blah blah blah… fuck man I’m a fan of WRITING what is not computing
Real generation gap around offbeat rapping, strident formalists will never get it and that’s fine, but it’s music not homework assignments and the whole thing w art is you literally do not need to color in the lines, you’ll never ever win this argument saying otherwise
Rap is stale as shit right now. There’s a lane for a star to come out of this if they’re original and make shit people enjoy because we got a whole lot of mid right now
aren’t y’all tired of being fed bad music, bad clothes, bad films, bad shows? the movies are remakes, the clothes are poorly constructed, the music is uninspired, the performances are lazy, and none of us can escape ads. it feels like i’m losing my mind
The resentment people have for critics is goofy. You already “won” you can consume as much content slop as you want without ever having to have a critical thought in your head
I genuinely think it’s crazy ppl don’t see Gucci as the obvious mixtape GOAT. Almost all original material, more prolific, hooks bars protégés consistency across 5 years … eating these guys alive. Imo
Middle aged ppl only answer this .. whats some shit you didn’t like when you were young and ostensibly cool but now you fuck with super hard … for me it’s prefab sprout … could not vibe with it at all, now they’re top 5 of the 80s to me
whats a good example of a random album you gravitated to, never heard people talk about much or celebrate, but then it survived your personal test of time & has remained a standby
Drake has more robot problems on his hands -- after his record label pulled the plug on one viral AI song that was using his voice ... two more, which are also solid, have cropped up.
I mean this neutrally, it has good and bad aspects: music seems like one area of the arts where literally everyone suspects they know better than everyone else
Theres a large degree of fumbling the bag here, but—being completely honest with myself as a older millennial—the original audiences of these outlets are old and (statistically) have kids now. The successors to Vice, Pitchfork, etc. are on IG/YT/Tiktok & may not even have a .com
Typical early millennial - gen x interaction is like, hearing “pepper” by butthole surfers as a millennial and thinking this rules, and then finding out you’re wrong it actually Sucks
My wonderful mom passed away on Saturday. She was a lifelong reader and a generous Vermonter, so we are asking for donations in her honor to the Brandon Free Public Library, a small-town library she took us to every week, and sometimes every day, when we were little.
House music on here is funny, ppl are basically like well it started in Chicago then daft punk, Calvin Harris, disclosure, kaytranada & retail outlets + shallow symbols of class aspirationalism (wine bars etc)
I gotta come back to this. this is tumblr brain. pharrell produced dozens of hits and wrote hits and launched artists careers. that didn't happen bc the public's ear 'wasnt trash' it was because he wrote hits and changed the sound of popular music
It is funny the debate about if rap is good is between a 35 year old who just wants to hear nelly and a 24 year old who doesn’t understand why you wouldn’t want 16 different micro iterations of Earl sweatshirt
It was better when the internet was something only a tier of nerds did and there were normal ppl in the real world who kind of ignored it and did things the old way. You guys missed out
Some fans claim Aladdin 3: Aladdin and the King of Thieves derived wholly from Aladdin. That’s inaccurate. Aladdin 2: The Return of Jafar massively influenced Aladdin 3 as well.
People debating whether an act is an industry plant or not, whether the artist or label is responsible for their success, et al, would be better off just listening to the music and thinking “do I like this or not” instead of worrying about how much “credit” everyone involved gets
I know Donald Glover used the “rap entourage” pitch to make Real Art with Atlanta but I still think a SoundCloud era rap entourage would have been fun show
re: antonoff and also rick rubin, i think ppl have trouble, post-hip-hop, wrapping their heads around a 'producer' who does not literally 'make beats' for the artist
