i don’t know who needs to hear this, but if you put your silverware into the dishwasher in the exact same sequence as they are arranged in the drawer, unloading goes a lot faster
When a woman's solo backpacking drove a wedge in her relationship with her boyfriend, she reached out to our Tough Love columnist
@blairbraverman
for advice. Braverman didn't mince words.
so i’m willing to go along with the the AWS preference for “ah-mee” over “A-M-I” *if* AWS is now prounced as “ah-wiss.” other newly corrected pronounciations:
* AKS: ack-sss
* RDS: arrrd-sss
* EC2: eck-two
* ECS: eck-sss
* ML: mull
* QLDB: quill-dub
* VPC: vee-pick
was helping a friend with a resume last night. his was in great shape, fortunately, and didn't need much from me, but i gave him the same spiel i give to everyone i help work on them anyway.
thought it might worth sharing here, so it's 🧵time. /1
i've had some non-tech folks asking me about mastodon recently and whether they should sign up. many of you might be in the same boat tomorrow during thanksgiving.
my answer to them is no, i wouldn't sign up. not right now anyway. quick 🧵on why.
@sogrady
This is maybe THE hardest thing to get across to the entrepreneurial engineers at
@106miles
. They always think "If you build it they will come".

related question if you work from home: is it going to be ok if my cat performatively, loudly and vociferously vomits directly behind me while i’m filming a video segment with a customer?
if people helped you coming up, pay it forward.
if no one reached out a hand to help, remember how that felt and be the person you wish had been there for you.
either way, if you've made it up, you have one obligation: send the elevator back down.
It wasn’t just luck alone; it was also people doing me favors when they absolutely had no reason to do so. You can’t ever repay debts like that, you can only pay them forward.
to the young people who’ve been told to work weekends: just a heads up that it’s a lot easier to spend weekends with friends when you’re young than when you’re older and people have more responsibilities, move away and so on.
you won’t get that time back or that chance again.
Hilary is a lot kinder than i am, and this is the charitable interpretation.
another is that if you’ve convinced yourself that engineering, say, is the only thing that matters and marketing is useless you don’t actually understand how things work but haven’t realized that yet.
Gave this advice today and wanted to repeat it here. If you think an entire job function (marketing, HR, engineering managers, etc.) is useless, you've most likely never seen it done well. The company you work at now is not what good looks like. Go out and find excellence.
OH from our local tech slack after telling someone that
@jessfraz
runs Fi on an iPhone: “look just because a literal wizard can do it doesn’t mean I’m about to try”
This is a thoughtful move on Microsoft's part and I hope every major tech company in the Seattle area that's asking employees to work from home also takes into account the hourly employees who could be impacted (e.g. cafeteria workers) & makes them whole.
many years ago on this day - more than
@monkchips
or i are willing to admit -
@redmonk
was incorporated.
we’re grateful to still be a thing, for our team and for all of the incredible, humbling support we get from our community.
we wouldn’t be here without you all. thank you.
really appreciate everyone checking in tonight, and i can report that my family and friends are safe.
my heart breaks for lewiston. it's fog of war right now and very little has been confirmed, but all early indications suggest that this shooting is beyond horrific.
Hi, I’m an industry analyst. You may know me from….actually, you know what? You almost certainly don’t know me. I've been doing this for over twenty years, and my own parents don’t know what I do.
never met
@dakami
, but based on all of the stories being told, i really wish i had. he did work that literally saved the internet, yet all that people who knew him want to talk about is how kind he was.
can't think of a better model for how to conduct yourself professionally.
WHAT YOU SAY: "i'm so sorry to have to cancel this call at the last minute, please accept my sincere apologies."
WHAT I HEAR: "good news! i come bearing the greatest gift there is: free time back in your schedule."
for anyone out there that is beginning to lose hope in the ongoing avalanche of bad, worse and worst news, i get it.
the situation is bad, not going to get better soon, and will get worse.
ok, as promised and at long last, it's time for the
@monktoberfest
talk drops to commence.
first out of the chute is a talk that, speaking candidly, i was surprised and pleased that our speaker agreed to give.
what you get your wife for her birthday when she's not a big fan of beards.
and before someone asks, no, i got her actual presents as well. much as it usually appears otherwise, i'm not a total idiot.
this is what we should be hearing from current Republican elected officials, but at least a past one is willing to stand and be counted.
thank you,
@schwarzenegger
.
“daddy, i don’t want you to go away.”
“i know little bear, i don’t want me to go either.”
“will you take tiana with you?”
“yes.”
“and take pictures of her adventures?”
“yes. i will.”
TODDLER: i love you daddy
ME: aw, thanks bear
TODDLER: you are not pretty or gorgeous or lovely
ME: i am not, that's true
TODDLER: no, you are old and beat up
ME: i, uh...thanks?
TODDLER: you're welcome
if you were wondering what a Han dynasty Chinese general and the June 23, 1969 unbundling of IBM software and hardware have to do with competing with AWS, this piece is for you
the bad news is that i had to leave duckbill / redmonk beers woefully early.
the good news is that i’m on my way home for the seven year old’s birthday.
thanks everyone for coming out tonight.
i've been saying this for a long time, but was told last week that it qualifies as a hot take.
for whatever it's worth, though, i don't believe it's possible to be a legitimate full stack engineer for applications of even moderate complexity in 2023.
in case anyone missed it, the new programming language rankings are up. java folks will be excited; dart too. julia fans, not so much. go/kotlin/rust/typescript people will be more like "meh."
anyway, enjoy.
in the interest of not burying the lede, it is my sad duty to report that as of this morning,
@redmonk
has officially cancelled the 2021
@monktoberfest
.
so if you maintain an OSS project, are thinking about maintaining a project or if you rely on OSS projects and need to understand the challenges of running them (most of you, in other words) watch
@hadleywickham
talk about his letter to a young maintainer
you may not be able to do what someone else can do, but that’s not what’s important.
what’s important is what you can do that they can’t.
too many people obsess over the former when they should be focused on the latter.
we don't say this all that often at
@redmonk
, but we're hiring. if you think you're a fit for an entry level analyst role, we'd love to hear from you.
RT's welcome! spread the word far and wide.
as promised, the
@redmonk
Q1 Programming Language Rankings are now live. check them out below.
in the meantime, please go thank the good folks at
@mongodb
for sponsoring these. we can't do what we do without help.
the suspension of IVF in Alabama rn should be highly concerning to anyone who plans to have a baby in the future in America. we are really in dangerous territory. 1 in 5 need fertility treatment like IVF...without it...
ME: where are your pants?
FIVE YEAR OLD: do you like wearing pants?
ME: touché
5YO: what’s touché?
ME: it’s a term from sword fighting
5YO: GREAT I’LL GO GET MY SWORD [runs off]
ME: that’s not what i-
5YO: AND I’M GOING TO WIN WITH NO PANTS
my mom got her second dose of the pfizer vaccine today.
thank you to every scientist and researcher who worked around the clock for a year to make this possible. thank you for protecting my mom and so many others.
we’ve been telling open source projects that were commercial or had ambitions to be that they needed to have a managed service implementation for a while now.
they used to tell us, in so many words, that it was too hard, they’d get to it later.
no one says that anymore.
U.S. colleges are requiring promises from students to help contain the coronavirus – no keg parties, no long road trips and no outside guests on campus.
i don't hate clocks going back. i don't hate clocks going forward. i hate clocks going, period.
just pick one and be done with it. i don't care which as long as we never change it again.
So many people get this mixed up.
If you hate that clocks are going back one hour tonight that means you don’t want daylight saving time to end. It means you love daylight saving time and hate standard time which is what we’re switching to.
open source was more convenient than proprietary software because you could just download it.
cloud is more convenient than on prem open source because there’s nothing to download.
this is why we’ve been pushing OSS vendors to offer managed services for well over a decade.
For me, the details of "packaging" and "convenience" when it comes to software have changed radically over the past 20 years.
It was packaging software digitally, moulding plastic data discs, putting those in cardboard boxes for shelves at bookstores...
i've been saying for a while - both publicly and privately - that one of the inevitable consequences of the drift away from pure OSS licenses and models would be a fork from a sufficiently interested party. not if, when. well, when just became today.
ME: ok, how’s that for a Mother’s Day plan?
FIVE YEAR OLD: sounds great! she’ll love it! now when is Children’s Day?
ME: uh, Children’s Day?
5YO: yeah, you know, a day to celebrate the Children? why do parents gets days but not kids?
ME: i. um. well.
5YO: i’m waiting.
i really feel like it should be illegal to offer this for sale two miles from our house and right on the way to daycare dropoff. i mean really, i'm supposed to drive by this every day and *not* buy it?
as we’ve told the 100+
@redmonk
clients that have been acquired by larger companies over the years, the product is important, but sales comp plans will be what determines your success or failure in the new org.
Slack joins Apple on the list of companies that took out a newspaper ad to sarcastically welcome an incumbent into their market only to lose to them.
Unfortunately when it comes to enterprise, sales teams beat good user experience 9 times out of 10.
best manager i ever had sent me home early on a friday to watch a
@redsox
afternoon playoff game.
in return for that 3 or 4 hours off she probably got something like fifty from me in late nights and early mornings.
You know how to get the most production? Reduce stress levels. Best manager I ever had in my career established strong trust with me in both directions. He deflected stress even when company around us laid off count 90% (yes 90%). He was my shield.
I coded my ass off for him.
