Kubernetes co-founder. Distinguished Engineer
@Azure
. Board member
@Wellspring_FS
. My teams do APIs, Containers, Linux, Hybrid and DevOps. Opinions mine, alone.
All I can say is it's been a pretty amazing four years...
"Windows Server 2019 will feature Linux and Kubernetes support"
Goodness knows what the next four will bring...
Looking to get started in
@kubernetesio
and don't know where to turn?
I'm really excited about the free online learning path we just released:
Enjoy! (and send us feedback to make it even better :)
So excited to see
@satyanadella
announce that App Services, Azure Functions and Logic Apps are coming to Kubernetes anywhere via
@Azure
Arc!
Choosing the right programming model for each app, with consistent policy & identity in k8s it's a huge win!
Big news:
The open source Azure Functions now supports
@Ku
bernetes anywhere!!!
(and virtual kubelet too!)
Run the same functions on-premise (or cross-cloud) via Kubernetes, and natively on
@Azure
Functions
The perfect solution for hybrid FaaS!
Kubernetes 1.19 was released 1 month ago.
Today it's available in
@Azure
Kubernetes Service. (and has been for ~1 week!)
Test your apps on the latest Kubernetes, available only in
@Azure
!
If you're on some other cloud, I guess be patient, they'll get there eventually...
Laptop fan is spinning, CPU pegged.
I think "It's probably the Kubernetes cluster I'm running via kind on my laptop"
Nope.
Electron. It's always electron.
Fully private clusters are now public preview on
@Azure
Kubernetes Service!
Managed Kubernetes from Azure with an IP address only available from your private network.
Many thanks and congrats to Azure Kubernetes and Networking teams! Awesome work!
Super excited to announce that
@Azure
is the first public cloud to offer a native, fully managed
@RedHat
@openshift
service.
I'll be demo-ing live at
@RedHatSummit
later today!
I realize that public radio probably needs to take whatever sponsors they get but
@Marketplace
airing sponsorship adverts from a crypto IRA startup is at least questionable, bordering on financial malpractice.
Pro tip: Don't put your retirement in crypto...

@kairyssdal
Excited that
@Azure
releases an Open Policy Agent controller for Kubernetes!
Declarative configuration of policy like "only pull from this registry"
It works with Kubernetes anywhere.
Come help build awesome policy for k8s with us!
Windows containers are now in public preview in
@Azure
Kubernetes Service!!!
Many, many thanks to Patrick Lang, Michael^2 and the folks in SIG-Windows and AKS team for helping us achieve this milestone!
Get started here:
Today
@Azure
is launching Dapr a Open Source portable runtime for building applications in cloud and edge:
Dapr is a a collection of really useful side-cars to make your distributed app development easier!
More info here:
"Azure is the best at Kubernetes. There are great tools in [other clouds] However, if speed to deploy and respond to user traffic is the most significant decision, then AKS is the winner (specifically with k8s)."
Incredibly proud of the awesome
@azure
container instances team as they go GA today!!!!
Really awesome stuff, the first serverless containers in the major public clouds!
The
@kubernetesio
extension for
@code
now supports creating/integrating minikube clusters from the editor!
(and a pretty icon :)
ctrl-shift-p 'kubernetes: create cluster' ftw! :)
PSA for all of you out in container land.
Running random binaries from the internet (even inside a container) is still a bad idea, no matter how easy that Dockerfile makes it :)
Are you interested in helping shape the future of
@Azure
Resource Manager templates?
Want to just geek out about configuration languages (I mean who doesn't)
Come check out the OSS
@BicepLang
project:
We look forward to seeing you there!
#BicepLang
Imagine installing a complete distributed application from a USB stick:
Cloud Native Application Bundles (CNAB), are a new open spec for managing distributed apps. Developed with
@docker
and supported by
@bitnami
,
@hashicorp
Congratulations to the team.
Windows Server Containers are now generally available (GA) in the
@Azure
Kubernetes Service!
Many, many congratulations to all of the teams, it's been a cross-Microsoft effort!
My blog reflecting on the history of Kubernetes and the community behind is published:
Thanks again to everyone who helped build this amazing community that was recognized at OSCON this week.
@kantrn
An interesting thread, but as a leader who has gotten numerous people promoted to very senior levels at Microsoft based on their OSS work, I can say that it is not representative of my org (nor MSFT imho)
@solomonstre
Everyone in the Kubernetes community owes a debt of gratitude to Solomon.
Were it not for his vision, design sensibilities and inspiration everything that we are doing today simply would not exist.
All I can say is "thank you!"
And I'm looking forward to what you do next.
Got a chance to get back to the lightboard recently.
Covered
Kubernetes storage, secrets, confguration, RBAC and more.
Series of 5-7 minute videos drawn backwards left-handed on a clear board :)
j/k it's a camera trick.
hint: I'm really right handed.
I'm loving the new native GUI for Kubernetes objects in the Azure portal.
Congratulations (and thanks) to the awesome Azure UX team!
[when can I get this in the Azure mobile app :)]
Excited that
@Azure
Kubernetes Service just added support for Kubernetes 1.12! Support for virtual machine scale sets and the upstream open source cluster autoscaler.
Congrats to the team!
This administrations immigration policy is so mind-blowingly short sighted.
The history of how the US lost it's innovation edge is going to start the story with moments like this.
If you value the US tech industry, even a little, we have to stop this stupidity.
I collected all of my recent light boards talks into one playlist:
From intro to containers and kubernetes through serverless and CI/CD
@azure
has you covered for your kubernetes learning needs.
@kelseyhightower
@tomkrazit
There is no doubt in my mind that Kubernetes would never have achieved success without you Kelsey. It's been a real honor and pleasure to work with you over the years.
I'm really proud to work for a cloud that has the morals and resources to stand up to bullies.
I'm pretty sure other clouds got similar letters from the US govt, but aren't willing to respond in public.
Where you buy your cloud from matters.
New to Kubernetes? Want to learn what it's all about? If you are looking to get up and running with Kubernetes, I hosted a recent webinar for people just getting started.
Check it out! And please share with anyone else who's starting out.
I couldn't be more excited to welcome the team to the adventure.
I'm endlessly grateful to the leadership at Microsoft and
@azure
building an environment where the best of open source and cloud-native can thrive.
Over the holidays, I build a new approach to configuration management.
It's inspired by JSX, but instead of blending Javascript and HTML it blends YAML and Python.
Check it out here:
Comments, issues, code, feedback very very welcome!
Curious about
@daprdev
? Want to know how to easily build distributed systems from community best practices?
Dapr is featured on
@Azure
friday with
@shanselman
And visit us at !
I'm pretty disappointed to see Knative forgo open governance.
The growth and user focus of Kubernetes, Helm and many others show that CNCF is a great home for open communities.
OSS is better if we work together in neutral spaces
Three important take aways from this week's
@azure
kubernetes service release:
* K8s 1.10.x is deprecated
* ScaleSet cluster are GA
* Standard Load Balancer is GA
Details:
Congrats to the team!!!
VS Code Extension for kubernetes now a featured extension!!
Major congrats to the azure k8s oss team!!!
And thanks to vs code for the awesome platform to build on!
ARM (
@Azure
Resource Manager) support in VS Code now includes a language server for even more intelligent awesomeness!
Many congrats to the team, this is a great milestone!
Excited to announce my new open source project:
Metaparticle - A standard library for distributed system development on Kubernetes
Join the fun:
And if you're in
#KubeCon
come to my keynote this evening!
Periscope, from AKS
Pretty cool new OSS project from the AKS team to help detect/debug kubernetes cluster problems.
It's
@Azure
specific for now, but could easily be adapted for other environments...
Once again,
@Microsoft
leads the way with 7700 (!!) employees contributing to a project on Github.
Thanks to everyone (at MSFT and everywhere else) who contributed to the projects I work on, or any open source project for that matter.
Today, explaining my life got a lot easier...
Whenever anyone asks "Why did you leave Google" I will send them this:
And when they ask "Why didn't you go to Amazon" I will send them this:
Normally I don't comment on articles but this article is so totally wrong I feel the need to call it out.
AKS is (and always will be) 100% open source kubernetes.
Looking for an easy way to learn
@HashiCorp
terraform for
@Azure
?
You can automagically generate terraform scripts from existing Azure resources using the OSS 'az2tf' tool!
Super cool stuff! Please test and send features/bugs.
