I've been thinking a lot about this DeSantis Martha's Vineyard thing, and finally realized why I'm so viscerally scared by it. He put people on the modern day equivalent of cattle cars by falsely promising them work. His buddies at DHS falsified the records so that these LEGAL
asylees could not be traced. That is a little TOO CLOSE for comfort to what the Nazis did. I wouldn't be surprised if someone told the asylees that work would set them free! We are not that far from the unimaginable.
Honestly I think all it would take is DeSantis deciding that it would help him and not hurt him to kill these "aliens" that are responsible for all his base's problems -- and then we're all the way to the Final Solution. We have to stop this.
I bet when they did this to the Jewish populations of Europe, there were Christians sitting around joking about how dumb the Jews were to believe that there was a work camp with plentiful food at the end of their journey. That's what the MAGAs say about this horror: "it's a joke"
And anyone who didn't agree with the Final Solution? Pretty sure their neighbors told them they were Communists and in the pocket of "the Rothschilds" (the Soros of their day) and the Jews were just getting a taste of their own medicine.
Everyone just now realizing how much their productivity is affected by constant low-level worry: that's what it's like to be poor. You're swapping in your financial problems every few minutes, on top of whatever other mental stuff you're trying to juggle.
every bad interview experience you’ve had comes down to some insecure person using the opportunity to power trip instead of doing their job
sometimes this even gets codified into the official process

My public library (the busiest in California!) is perpetually packed with people using the resources there to get jobs or other income. Having gainfully employed neighbors is of great interest to me as a taxpaying homeowner.
Just saw a VP eng job on LinkedIn that had like 1800 applicants already. I've worked in tech for 24 years and haven't met 1800 legit VP eng candidates in my entire career.
Not gonna lie... think twice before you become the guy who can debug all the layers of the stack. You won't make more money and you'll probably work way longer hours :(
Since we're talking about this: I spent my 30s working my ass off, and at age 40 my marriage was over & I was in the hospital with a brain aneurysm and now Stage A heart failure. Everyone young assumes they can get their health back once they "make it", and some of us are wrong
If you don't see how subsidized/cost-capped daycare and free community college could unleash a wave of economic growth like this country has never seen... our life experiences are just too different to bridge. And yours are too limited.

Why do people somehow think "MY Confederate ancestors didn't own slaves" is a flex? That just means they were gullible enough to fight and die for the worst ideology ever invented and got nothing for their trouble. Good job good work, Cletus.

Bad laws make criminals, and bad cops REALLY make criminals. They literally made these LEGAL ASYLEES into criminals without their knowledge or actions!

Santa Clara county pays flat $33.66, plus I think in Sunnyvale a little more if your house is extra-big? Wonder where Professor Mourdoukoutas lives that has such an extreme tax?
A lot of times the thing that a startup thinks is their "special sauce" turns out to actually be a constraint that ends up killing the company.
I'll give you an example: at Friendster we were SOOOO 1000% convinced that our "special sauce" was an n-dimensional friend graph that
I've interviewed 10 or 12 people this week for both dev and non-dev positions, and with one possible exception EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM was a woman, PoC, veteran, and/or LGBTQ+. Truly wonderful candidates too. If your pipeline sucks, the problem is not them -- it really is you.
Writing is an increasingly important skill in tech. Poor writing can hamper career progression, above a certain level.
I wrote about tactics for more clear, more frequent, and more confident writing. Read it here:
Holy crap, the NYT has an article about how much people spend on vacations... and it's like $10-15K!!! I am genuinely stunned. I think I might be an even bigger cheapskate than I realized.
If you read any history at all you inevitably end up wondering why women kept dying in pregnancy or childbirth. So I kind of appreciate this dude for making it clear. If you treated your dog this way people would be more outraged.
Mrs. Geekdom and I have had 7 kids. All her pregnancies are high risk. They’re terrible. Hyperemesis. One near-stillbirth. A placental abruption. An apparent miscarriage (but OL of Lourdes worked a miracle). A still birth. 6 caesareans. “Geriatric” maternal age.
There are almost 20,000 Californians hospitalized with COVID right now, and we haven't even begun to see the Christmas rush, and these fucking idiots are planning to have "underground" New Years parties. I can only conclude that our whole society has become a suicide pact.
I wish engineers understood the legal implications of leaving California, especially if the COMPANY also switches their "headquarters". You could be losing your rights to equal pay, to your pre-existing IP, to work for competitors, or to start your own venture.
A Silicon Valley recruiter told us that MORE THAN 80% of all jobs are filled through personal connections here. Almost everyone hired at $bigco comes through a referral. All those job recruiting startups, and this is the best we can do.

Especially important to Black Americans who could easily be abused in local stores. The catalog let them shop with dignity, secure in the knowledge they wouldn't be overcharged or otherwise treated badly.
Ooops, didn't mean to be a super bummer! Here's my one piece of advice: after a certain point, advancement in eng leadership is all about communicating well (esp in writing) and having good political instincts. Work on that in your spare time to advance.
I tussled with React Native quite a bit this year, and if I have one piece of advice it's this: hire some people who have native experience, esp on iOS, because that's gonna be where 80% of your problems that make you cuss come from.
HAHAHA OK this is a little mean but it's so perfect that Bolinas -- most NIMBY town in the entire land! -- has lost their post office because of a landlord dispute AND the fact they arranged it so there is literally no real estate for rent anywhere!
POTUS today invited those of us who are non-white to fix our own countries first. My country of birth, South Korea, put their corrupt president in prison after a process of peaceful demonstration. I'm sure they would be more than happy to teach Americans how to do the same.
Hey tweeps, I decided to do a long thread about heart failure because there are SOOOO many misconceptions about it. If you read to the end I'll have a couple of asks for you!
OK so first off: heart FAILURE is not what we normally think of as heart DISEASE -- which would be
Oh, forgot to mention... if your governor lifts the shutdown, renters gotta pay rent and presumably owners will no longer be eligible for mortgage forbearance. NOW why do you think Trump, Kushner, Hannity, and other big landlords are so hot to trot? Your civil liberties?

@nikitabier
I remember working with one once at a startup. He asked us to buy him stuff like A WHOLE PEKING DUCK for lunch. AFAIK he never shipped any code before resigning for a drug dependency.
@josephzeballos
Biden was soooo good at the "bizarre but harmless activities" part of being VP. There was never an ice cream cone he wouldn't eat or a Mongolian sport he wouldn't try.
My current theory is that shitty engineering interview culture is actually a way of PREVENTING YOUR OWN DEVS from leaving. Programmers who run that gamut for a few months are so relieved and traumatized that they can't even THINK about doing it again for years.
Junior devs: if you don't have commercial experience and are solely asking interviewers to look at your school projects... they have to be set up to ACTUALLY WORK. I don't know how many times I've tried to click through to the first project on a website and it doesn't work.
This is a trend that's been happening since LinkedIn became a thing, but we sort of didn't notice because there weren't very many mass job loss periods since then.
When I was a junior, the VP eng would place an ad on Craigslist or Dice and they'd get maybe 200 resumes. 80% of
One thing I’ve noticed in the best teams in tech right now is that there’s no desire to hire and mentor juniors anymore (across every discipline).
This is in part due to cutbacks etc but it’s also that a new philosophy won out - instead of large, bottoms up teams, everyone wants
OK I am placing dibs on a new term: "epistemic shear": when reality is cut into two streams that you cannot reconcile whatsoever. For example, you know the planet is burning down but you also worry about your 401k.
Someone on this site who I helped once -- very minimally, tbh! -- got in touch today to say he has begun helping others as he feels I helped him. Truly an overwhelming feeling to ever hear that, I'm so lucky.
Stanford just billed me $140,000 for my tumor surgery. I don't have to pay most of that myself but the thing about American healthcare is that you literally never know until you get the bill and anyone who says you can "shop around" is a fucking liar.
This is definitely the worst hiring environment I've seen in my career, and I lived through the Dot Bomb and the Great Recession. I don't know what to tell junior devs any more, especially the ones who made huge sacrifices for what they thought was a safe, lucrative career.
But think about how this ossifies corporate culture. These guys are sitting pretty at the top of the heap in their current jobs, and they have a LOT of anxiety about being able to get a new job if they had to.
failing to hit product-market fit gives you is that it forces you to confront earlier whether your thing is TRULY special sauce -- or just a pointless straitjacket.
I've seen tweets and articles saying that it's rational to rent rather than buy. If you don't understand how home ownership gets you more rights and privileges in this country than renters -- esp if you're non-white -- then you just don't understand how the USA works.
Can report that

we basically used all our resources to build that... which our competitors were trying much simpler and more scalable solutions (e.g. segment by universities, make everyone friend one account) that were "good enough" and in fact preferred by users!

@kyleshevlin
I think you've touched on something really important here Kyle. If young people can no longer dream of becoming artists, musicians, writers, journalists, film makers, or programmers... What's left to aspire to?
Hey racists, you're so behind the times. Asian countries got this shit buttoned up now plus our borders have been closed to them for weeks, you should be worrying about catching the Rona from a middle-aged white lady at Costco who just went through a busy airport.
TIL that all the food banks in the US give away about $8bb worth of food. SNAP is $70bb. If you care about hunger in this country, your charity is nice but voting blue is worth 10x more.

How to become wealthy in the USA:
* Never get sick
* Never have a sick spouse, or divorce them immediately if they get sick
* Don't allow your children to get sick
* Don't take care of your parents or siblings if they get sick
* Inherit a home or enough money to buy a home
One of my biggest life lessons from 20+ years in Silicon Valley is that karma is real. If you're a selfish, miserable, lonely fucker who makes a billion dollars... you're just gonna become an even MORE selfish, miserable, lonely fucker.
I now ask for an accommodation for my brain injury every time I interview, even if I don't really NEED it, because I want to normalize the practice and also see how the company handles disability. I just ask to be permitted to Google during the interview without prejudice, since
Is he really saying that he didn't know that listing ONLY names of large majority-Black cities as sites of voter fraud was a dog whistle? Then he should resign for lack of political intelligence.
The GOP has almost entirely failed to congratulate Biden on his win, or even acknowledge it, and yet everyone else is supposed to reach out with understanding and forgiveness? FOH!!!
When it comes to Section 230 reform, we can argue about whether sites should be liable for content. But what we CANNOT argue about, IMHO, is that they should 100% be liable for RECOMMENDATIONS. Cut off the recommendation engines and we'll see a lot less bullshit.

advised his followers to buy a solar charger and of course I did because I just blindly follow him and it's a great idea. I think I'll be buying them for all my friends this year.
As we mourn Ben Ferencz, who prosecuted Nazis, I was struck by something he wrote much later. It was an essay about his hijinks roaming Europe at the end of his service there, after Nuremberg.
1/2 Deeply sad news. Benjamin Ferencz, the last-surviving Nuremberg podium prosecutor of Nazi war criminals, left our world.
Meeting Ferencz was always an aspiration. His legacy including advancing justice & accountability for victims & survivors will stay with us to learn from.
These days, payment processing is cheap to implement - but fraud prevention is expensive. Community "features" like phone chats are cheap - but community safety is expensive. Recommendations are cheap - but not radicalizing users is expensive. GOVERNANCE is expensive!
Devops friend just told me, "Two of my favorite coworkers are quitting over management's quixotic attachment to crypto." Wonder if this is gonna be a trend?
Now that he has received a historical Oscar nomination in a leading role, I'm gonna need everyone to learn to pronounce it correctly: Steven Yeun rhymes with fun. Not Yoon, not Ywen, not whatever mush you're saying.
Instead of just focusing on voter registration, we should be telling everyone about the joy of absentee voting! For the first time you can get an absentee ballot in any state with one online form:
Facebook just proved to the whole industry that showing discriminatory housing ads will only bring a $115k fine. That's like a nickel for you or me. Discrimination is now essentially legal again for all intents and purposes.
When people say Biden's Secret Service protection detail head David Cho -- a Korean American -- is actually his Chinese handler... They're saying I'm not an American. Also that they're racist assholes.

People need to have serious conversations with multiple adoptee friends, and ideally also adopter friends. I learned that a very high percentage of my adoptee friends were abused and that was that.

By all accounts the DHS employees deliberately falsified records to show that asylees were living in homeless shelters across the USA that they had never even heard of. If that isn't conspiracy, I don't know what is.
