I’d be happy to be corrected, but while this sort of scene is common in the field events (and a given in any multi) I don’t ever recall seeing this scene for WR achievements in men’s middle distance. It speaks volumes to the coexistence of friendship and rivalry.

I’m going to swear, so look away if easily offended. Pawel Wiesiolek has just scored 8333, smashing his PB by over 100 pots, in his 5th decathlon in 6 weeks, after trying again and again to qualify. No-one deserves an Olympic place more than him. No-one. What a fucking hero.

This past weekend, the @DecathletesOfEu website passed a pretty big milestone: 10k visitors this year alone. That’s a drop in the ocean compared to bigger athletics sites, but for a niche discipline, I’m pretty pleased with that! Getting those decathlon stories out, one by one.

Estonia, a country with a population of 1.3m, has 3 men qualified for the Olympic decathlon. It has another 5 decathletes over or close to 8000. It is, without a doubt, the greatest decathlon nation on the planet.

I get why Mondo should just be Mondo rather than the new Bolt, but I don’t actually mind Mondo being the New Bolt, because it moves us on from the pointless scrutiny of current sprinters who can never fill Bolt’s shoes, and catapults another event into the spotlight. Make sense?

Unfortunately there is pressure on athletes to look a certain way. There is no hiding that the less you wear the more followers you accumulate therefore the more sponsorship & money earning opportunity there is. You don't always get sponsored for your athletic ability anymore.

A final slow handclap for UKA’ s flawed CE selection standards. Chari Hawkins, who came into the competition with a PB below Jade O’Dowda, and whom Jade beat in April, finished 8th at the World Champs. Living proof that the standard was wrong.

I’ve set out in detail why UKA’s hep standard was wrong, based on the event this year (compared to dec, which was correct) Here are the consequences. The athlete in 3rd fighting for bronze with 2 to go has a PB 12 pts lower than Jade O’Dowda. Jade beat her this year in Italy

Hang on - I thought combined eventers were responsible for congestion in the schedule, so their fields needed to be hacked by a third to free up time? But apparently there’s time for a whole extra round in every male and female 200-1500. Ok, got it.

I’ve set out in detail why UKA’s hep standard was wrong, based on the event this year (compared to dec, which was correct) Here are the consequences. The athlete in 3rd fighting for bronze with 2 to go has a PB 12 pts lower than Jade O’Dowda. Jade beat her this year in Italy

I won the competition based on a format that’s not fair towards the guy with the furthers distance. Our event is simple. Whoever jumps the furthest during the competition wins the competition but not this time around. 8,13m gets you second place and 8,09m wins the competition 👀

What sad, sad news. Svein broke new ground in athletics - he was accessible, engaging, listened and responded to fans, both personally and through the inclusive environment he created. His successors have a huge legacy to continue. I’m so sorry for those who knew and loved him
