By night: writing about decathlon at

. By day: strategy and policy stuff. Love an occasional series + my bendy ruler. Don’t touch my Irn Bru.
I am now on Substack!
For the many musings I have that are only tangentially related to decathlon, and too long for Twitter.

It is the measure of the class of a politician, whatever their party, how they regard and treat their civil servants.
They don’t come classier than J Swinney - it has been our pleasure, boss.
After almost 16 years as a Minister, I have today written to the First Minister to say that when her successor is appointed I will leave Government. Serving Scotland has been the privilege of my life. Thank you. 👇
Isn’t Jazmin Sawyers great on comms?
Like Hannah England, she has the perfect combination of a practiced eye, clear delivery and a clear enjoyment of what she’s doing - what you need to guide people through an event.
Laura Muir is running shortly and there is a gaggle of U13 girls behind me absolutely delirious with excitement about being in the call room at the same time as her.
Female role models matter.
Imagine being so secure, so assured of your achievements and proud of your abilities that you are not only happy to share the accolade with one of your greatest rivals, but to propose that you do so

This is what I want to be seeing when I read “all conditions record” not puffs of wind blowing 10.5 sprinters to 9.99 I mean throw in some biblical elements to overcome
I’m sure the triple jumpers, 200m runners, discus throwers and steeplechasers who had their events hacked to allow the optimum TV-viewing package to be fashioned are delighted that the sacrifice has been such a roaring success.
Exclusive: British viewers will be unable to watch Diamond League athletics on TV or online this year.
BBC will show highlights the day after each event. That's it. Impossible to watch live in Britain.
NOW YALL KNIW WHAT FUCKING TIME IT IS!! OLYMPICS MUTHAFUCKAS!! Ok I’m gonna try to cover as much as I can cause I be working now y’all I ain’t got the time I use to. I know what you saying “make time Leslie” damnit dint sass me!! (Stomps off considering what you saying)
Delighted if this works for them and they’re happy but I can’t express just how uncomfortable I feel when I see men hijacking women’s moments of achievements.
Love's not a competition, but 🇸🇰's Dominik Černý and Hana Burzalova are winning today 🥰
What a moment after the 35km race walk finish 🙌

The British crowd’s deafening applause when Abi Pawlett cleared 1.70m is why you send home athletes to home champs, and why combined eventers deserve a champs with promotion and an audience
I’m very pleased to share that I was one of the successful applicants to this scheme, and I’m delighted to be doing my bit to increase the number of women in sports writing.
Thank you

for the opportunity, and looking forward to getting started in the New Year!
To end 2020 on a positive note, we're delighted to announce 15 new mentorships to kick off 2021. Thanks to all who applied, our fab mentors, successful mentees and to

for setting it up.
I’d be happy to be corrected, but while this sort of scene is common in the field events (and a given in any multi) I don’t ever recall seeing this scene for WR achievements in men’s middle distance.
It speaks volumes to the coexistence of friendship and rivalry.
And to reassure all that my required impartiality is intact, I can and have paid similar tributes to politicians across those administrations of different colours I have served since 1997.
Stadium is absolutely BOUNCING after 3 distance races in a row. Worth reflecting that what might be popular elsewhere - sprints - ain’t necessary what’s popular here.

Jakob Ingebrigsten says he was sick, and woke up with a sore throat. “I felt around 88%. If I was 92% maybe I would have won today. But I wasn’t myself today.” (passed on by a Norwegian journalist)
I’m dead pleased to share - tickled, if entirely honest - that I’ll be covering the

This is what decathlon pole vault looks like when you consider it as entertainment to be optimised rather than an inconvenience to be minimised

I’m going to swear, so look away if easily offended.
Pawel Wiesiolek has just scored 8333, smashing his PB by over 100 pots, in his 5th decathlon in 6 weeks, after trying again and again to qualify.
No-one deserves an Olympic place more than him. No-one. What a fucking hero.
The year is 2050. The mens pole vault is still going on. Mondo is in a queue behind the Next Sale, tickets for a Take That Reunion, and the 23rd heat of the mixed relay. What a way to treat the biggest star in the sport

In a diversion from all the awfulness, it’s
@edin_thinker
and my 17th wedding anniversary today. I’m not sure what the usual celebration is for 17 years, so here’s us with a wall in Central Park and a whole load of attitude.
This past weekend, the
@DecathletesOfEu
website passed a pretty big milestone: 10k visitors this year alone. That’s a drop in the ocean compared to bigger athletics sites, but for a niche discipline, I’m pretty pleased with that! Getting those decathlon stories out, one by one.
Estonia, a country with a population of 1.3m, has 3 men qualified for the Olympic decathlon.
It has another 5 decathletes over or close to 8000.
It is, without a doubt, the greatest decathlon nation on the planet.
And we have two more Olympic qualifiers: Karel Tilga 🇪🇪 8484 and Garrett Scantling 🇺🇸 8476. Massive PBs for both.
And, the Estonian Olympic decathlon team is now full.
It can change, with injury and with additional performances from others, but we have 3 men qualified.
It seems that Justin Gatlin ends his career the 14th september in Bellinzona, according to the organizer's press communication
With him Andre De Grasse and Fred Kerley
So, I will be there

This crowd all for a decathlon pole vault, and mostly for Harry Kendall. Everything else is finished.
When combined eventers are seen, they inspire.

I propose that we throw random hazards into all of Sifan’s races just to see what she can do.

If you’re one of the people who follow me who don’t follow athletics and want to understand how big a deal this is...look how short the pole is, even with the angle. All the rest...that was Mondo. He is 20 years old.
Between the NFL delusion that they’re faster than Bolt and the NBA chumps thinking a globe is just a basketball in fancy wrap, I’m concluding that Noah Lyles has been sent from on high to save us all.
I get why Mondo should just be Mondo rather than the new Bolt, but I don’t actually mind Mondo being the New Bolt, because it moves us on from the pointless scrutiny of current sprinters who can never fill Bolt’s shoes, and catapults another event into the spotlight. Make sense?
Heading home from Arona after a tiring but fun weekend of commentating. More fun that I was expecting, tbh, when I learned 20 minutes after going on air that I’d be doing the entire final session (including technical liaison with Spanish crew) on my own 😬
Re Holly’s point. Here are two screenshots from Instagram, with the hashtags under a picture. Same photographer. One male athlete, one female. Both under 20, the female athlete U18. Guess which is which?
Unfortunately there is pressure on athletes to look a certain way.
There is no hiding that the less you wear the more followers you accumulate therefore the more sponsorship & money earning opportunity there is.
You don't always get sponsored for your athletic ability anymore.
The one conclusion I’ve drawn from today is that I am actually warming to Sha’Carri. She is coming out as by far the most sensible and coherent among all these utterly batshit takes.
I generally don’t listen to decathlon commentary because I get frustrated at the lack of context provided. But
@hannengland
was superb. Positive without cheerleading, confident yet comfortable to admit limitations of knowledge. Guiding without lecturing. More Hannah please!
A final slow handclap for UKA’ s flawed CE selection standards.
Chari Hawkins, who came into the competition with a PB below Jade O’Dowda, and whom Jade beat in April, finished 8th at the World Champs.
Living proof that the standard was wrong.
I’ve set out in detail why UKA’s hep standard was wrong, based on the event this year (compared to dec, which was correct)
Here are the consequences.
The athlete in 3rd fighting for bronze with 2 to go has a PB 12 pts lower than Jade O’Dowda.
Jade beat her this year in Italy
Staying clear of comment on substance, as I must, but shout out to all the civil servants across the land who are working really, really hard around the clock right now.
Apparently the combined events are too long and too boring to watch. Someone better tell these folk who are queuing into the forest, just like their counterparts in Götzis and Ratingen do, to come see them.
Twitter can be a cesspit at times, but being able to enjoy today’s fantastic athletics collectively as a community - oohing and aaaahing and crying and arguing - in a global pandemic has been brilliant.
Hard to imagine enjoying a major championships now without it
#Tokyo2021
Yet Nike apparently had no problems sponsoring twice-banned drug cheat Justin Gatlin - who has wrought far more damage on the sport than Luvo ever could.
Admiration for those athletes here, and in other contexts, who are sticking their neck out for what is important to them. In any walk of life, it’s hard to do for fear of consequences, but when one is brave enough to lead and speak up, others will follow
I’m not sure in what world Laura Muir was “misjudging” a race in which she was well behind someone breaking the world record by 2 seconds. That’s some take 👀
Hang on - I thought combined eventers were responsible for congestion in the schedule, so their fields needed to be hacked by a third to free up time?
But apparently there’s time for a whole extra round in every male and female 200-1500.
Ok, got it.

Celebrating our lockdown anniversary with this throwback to New York when, 30 seconds after this photo was taken (somewhere on 5th Ave), a security guard came out and told us to move it along. Fine pal, your fountains were pish anyway.

With Heike Drechsler raking the sand pit and Betty Heidler handing out water bottles, I like how the Germans put their retired superstars to work. Can’t wait to see Colin doing bag searches and Steve Backley scanning the tickets at next year’s Anniversary Games

I’m now getting to the stage where this sort of news doesn’t elicit shock or sadness as a primary reaction.
Rather it results in pure, unadulterated rage that yet another man has abused his power and yet another woman is dead.

Well, if you’re going to let the person doing 1500, 5000 and 10000 leave it to a last lap kick, you kinda deserve what you get.
Have we learned nothing from the great Mo Farah rollovers of yore? 🤦🏻♀️

LJ makes clear how unfair it is, and acknowledges that another guy should have won.
Ruswahl Samaai is a class act.
I won the competition based on a format that’s not fair towards the guy with the furthers distance. Our event is simple. Whoever jumps the furthest during the competition wins the competition but not this time around. 8,13m gets you second place and 8,09m wins the competition 👀

Is the “drunk teenager” reference necessary?
If we have to describe the 17 year old girl as drunk, could we also attach such adjectives as depraved, evil and predatory to the man who raped her?
#everydaysexism
I like how Jade O’Dowda’s great progression this year is simultaneously good enough to be rewarded with Olympic podium potential funding AND not good enough to merit selection for the World Champs
What sad, sad news. Svein broke new ground in athletics - he was accessible, engaging, listened and responded to fans, both personally and through the inclusive environment he created.
His successors have a huge legacy to continue. I’m so sorry for those who knew and loved him
