Aloha! I'm Sloane, I make comics, illustrate, & write fiction. My work explores the visceral & psychic parallels between the biological & the cosmic through a throbbing neon lens!

I think right now the dominant trend I’ve noticed in creative work, especially mainstream fiction/comics/etc, is artists creating from a place hyperdefensive social paranoia (see: preempting any ‘problematic reads’ by addressing directly in story or in the commentary around)
cartoonists, please.... cartoon lol. caricature and stylize stuff more. use shorthand. draw things 'badly' or vaguely or not at all when they're not the focus of the panel! realism for realism's sake does nothing for your art 🥲
whatever you're working on right now: lean into it. don't shy away from your weird ideas, from randomness and absurdity, from ugliness or whimsy. GO THERE.
dont make your work for your most bad faith, cruel and stupid reader! make it for someone who's coming to you with their head and heart open, with as much intelligence and respect you're giving the work. you never know which you'll get so might as well aim high lol
I keep seeing discussion about how ""AI"" image/text generators won't ever be as good as humans but one thing im not seeing discussed is how that doesn't even need to happen for it to kill off entire creative industries bc the majority of ppl have NO arts/media education/literacy
it’s funny seeing all these authors who are anti-piracy (and often anti-library!?) just going hogwild using AI to do their book covers and interior illustrations 🤭 not that they weren’t already screwing over the poor Fiverr artists they ‘hired’ before
beyond storytelling styles or grim/hopeful tones, that sort of anxiety in the creative process manifests in a really unappealing way in art. it brings down stories to the level of fable, flattening difficult subjects n themes and maybe unintentionally condescending to the reader
ppl are asking about if you get canceled bc of you art and honestly that can happen by faving the wrong tweet or gossip, ANY trivial thing a petty person wants to stoke into a campaign. Might as well make art courageously in the face of insanity, the only thing you can control
we've been developing this for a minute now so im stoked to finally soft launch our new initiative... welcome the ✒️CARTOONIST COOPERATIVE!🖋️
Your new, all-in-one home for comics, big and small. Together we can make comics better for everyone!

whenever I see editors asking for people to post their portfolios and hundreds of artists replying it always makes me think of like a 1920s dock worker waiting to get chosen by the foreman lol sigh
If you like:
⭐️ psychokinetic martial arts
⭐️ hopeless, morally compromised characters
⭐️ planet wide ego death
⭐️ cat girls
PRISM STALKER: THE WEEPING STAR is for you 🫡 out July 4th!
the online creative atmosphere many ppl are perpetuating right now wants artists to make their work inclusive to the point of...exclusion. to the point of such inoffensive non-specificity that its substanceless! and on an authorial level AND a digetic level which is wild
ppl who cleave to the belief that ‘immoral’ art/fiction can do mind-altering harm often use the same line of reasoning to conclude that consuming ‘moral’ art/fiction makes you a morally better or more empathetic person. It’s a seductively easy and romantic binary to agree with...
Making work without being paranoid about its reception DOESNT mean not to bother examining your work for biases, bigotry, etc. Do that for YOU as a person. Even if you think your work is squeaky clean, people will interpret and experience the work in ways you can’t predict
I think more writers need to treat their characters less like ‘real’ people and more like a brush stroke. A strong gestural impression of an experience, not a math equation

A thoughtful reflective author comes across different than a paranoid author who is simply trying to stay a step ahead of the bad faith read and cover their asses.
*wakes up* I think narrative ‘structures’ are thought of both too literally by writers and are weighted with an almost sacred level of importance in the Western world when structure is actually both not that complicated or essential to writing 🤔
also mentioning this again, we’re making some collectivizing efforts here that I’m really excited about! If no one’s got us, we got us lol
reply if you want an invite, open your DMs and I’ll send a link 👍
We're creeping up to the last 1/3 of our campaign and still hovering around 50%! We could use any boosts, newsletter or Patreon shout-outs we can get friends 😈🙏 to keep the excitement going, here's work from another Death in the Mouth 2 artist,

it has taken me over three years to work on my GN because i had a 7k advance (for over 120 pages of full color art AND lettering) and that meant i had to pick up not only a demanding day job (that started at 45k in fucking NYC) but also freelance. i had to prioritize money
ok you know what, we're done with representation. its time for stories that make you feel alien. i wanna read a story and feel less like a person because im missing the breadth of experience described inside it. stories that make me feel ignorant about the potential of humanity!
Excited to say the

man I haven’t read or seen any stories that feel contemporary in years because smart phones and social media are always cleverly avoided somehow. no one has yet solved how to include those two things without the story being ABOUT those things. feels like I’m stuck in history lol
SHE’S HERE!! She’s so beautiful wow!!!! infinite thanks to
@01FirstSecond
for producing such a beautiful book, I’m so proud of how Maps turned out 🥺😭😭😭💕💕💕

Deadline is 2/1: More info:
funny reading mainstream "literary" authors as they start to add scifi elements to their work because we're now living a lot of clasdic scifi tropes. but the executions have been so mediocre! read some SF, i beg you!! you're reusing like 80 year old tropes as if theyre new 🤨
Everyone talks about wanting "inclusive" and "diverse" art but really, yall don't. Inclusive and diverse doesn't mean XYZ ethnicities and XYZ politics are represented neatly in one book.
It means there's a variety of books doing all sorts of things to the individualized extreme!
She’s FINALLY here! My slice-of-life graphic novel A Map to the Sun is out in the world for you to read! It’s been a long journey to this day and I’m soooo thrilled to be able to share it with you all!! Grab it at your local comic book store if you can!
most ppl are perfectly fine eating IP gruel bc its a distraction from suffering, formulaic, palliative. we can cultivate our craft to the best of our ability & be 'better' than AI, but surviving as a field depends on viewers who actually care to cultivate an appreciation of ART
your spontaneity and affectations are precious, dont bury them under stiffly-executed detail and tracing just because you think realism is better for some reason! it's not! i wanna see your true sensibilities and sometimes that only happens in the first few applications of a line
is it just me or does the "f a character says something problematic in a book and isn't punished/corrected then the author is reproducing harm by approving it" discourse feel like a psyop LOL I'm looking around like ok what are they trying to distract me from (answer: everything)
yo! here’s the first chapter of my indigenous scifi comic PRISM STALKER free! Volume 1 is available for purchase at your local comic book store + online! I’d love to finish the series and need your help showing you want that too!
#PrismStalkerV2
feel like establishments that care about art as human expression will keep hiring artists and the establishments that already use stock art/photos and have an ugly, bland homogenous visual brand will transition to AI. and idk, not quite sure it’s a loss
One thing that commodification of creativity and self into digestible brands for the algorithms, nerdalytics, and TVtropeification is stories across mediums being very tonally monotonous and genre-conservative. Narratives are v tidy, themes and metaphors are knit cleanly together
dislike that sweetweird post but what I dislike more is this common correlative, implying that “sweetness”/goodness is the domain of “diverse” people because of their marginalization and the misanthropic cishet man is prone to hate & rage. delusional and infantilizing lol
Here's a partial peek of our wraparound cover for DEATH IN THE MOUTH: Original Horror from the Margins Volume 2! Drawn by the amazing

😈!
We launch August 1st, a little over a month away! ✨
The idea that the ideal creative state is one of ease, of flow and inspiration, should be greatly distrusted. Early in your creative practice, you might fall into a work ‘flow’, where ideas and words that step forth unbidden, with ease. Be wary of that effortlessness.
I finished my next graphic novel!!! I feel so relieved lol it’s been a long journey making it 🥲
Prism Stalker Volume 2: The Weeping Star will be in comic stores June 24, 2023 and bookstores July 4th, 2023 and is available for preorder now 😊

there are a few things underlying the current discourse around fiction/art/etc that are troubling 1) the overblown effect of art being able to morally harm us 2) the flawed metaphor of 'ideas are like viruses' 3) conflating sensitivity to disgust with sensitivity to immorality
I would think we'd be celebrating when sincere, complicated and authentic stories gets past gatekeepers and into the mainstream, even if you don't LIKE the stories. but I guess it's more rewarding to rack up concern troll clout then engage with a work in good faith 😞 sigh
currently reading Screenwriting is Rewriting to help me as I do novel revisions and rly enjoying it! I like seeing how he organizes feedback and edits, what to keep in mind as you approach strengthening your story... some excerpts:
with House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones coming back into conversation, I wrote about artistic depictions of rape, when it succeeds and fails, and tried to unpack the audience's complicated emotions and ideologies around sexual violence in TV/film
Whats this!? Its ........a

thank you all soooo much, I can't believe we get to make this creepy weird beautiful book!!! holy moly what a ride this has been 🥲💚 6 more hours, last chance to get in on this goodness!
I’ve been interviewing for writing positions recently & I keep getting the same questions: how do you represent a historically marginalized character well? How do you avoid stereotypes or, if engaging in them, do it in a ‘good’ way? How do you not culturally appropriate?
i just don't understand... what happened to the eyes of the ppl who work in TV n movies lol every CG thing i see is browntown now!!! what happened to color grading 🥲
so honored that A MAP TO THE SUN is nominated for an Ignatz in the Outstanding Graphic Novel category!
it was rough to release this book during the pandemic but im so happy its slowly been connecting with people 😭💚 thank you all!!!
heres my precious girls lol
