Today we lost our dad, Sir Colin Blakemore, after 18 months of suffering from motor neuron disease. He died peacefully in Sobell House Hospice in Oxford, surrounded by love. My sisters and I were with him every day in the hospice, and it was a privilege. We really miss him

We need to talk about university students, many of whom are 18-year-olds - adolescents - living away from home for the first time. I’m hearing distressing stories about isolation, loneliness and being stuck in rooms. Are we getting it right? Are other countries doing it better?

This politician on the Today programme is ‘sick of the science changing’. This is why more scientists need to go into politics, and politicians need to have a better understanding of how science works.

How is it acceptable that children's right to education is a lower priority than adults' right to drink in a pub? Schools are still closed for most secondary years and many primary-aged kids are not back. How is this acceptable when pubs, restaurants etc will reopen next week?

Not sure a longer school day and less summer holiday is what children (or teachers) need. Children of all ages need to play, exercise, hang out with peers and have fun. Play and social interaction are crucial to development and wellbeing, but have been in short supply for a year

THE TEENAGE BRAIN ISN'T BROKEN, IT ISN'T DYSFUNCTIONAL, AND IT ISN'T A DEFECTIVE ADULT BRAIN. ADOLESCENCE IS A FORMATIVE PERIOD OF LIFE, WHEN THE BRAIN IS CHANGING IN IMPORTANT WAYS, WHEN NEURAL PATHWAYS ARE MALLEABLE, AND PASSION AND CREATIVITY RUN HIGH. WE SHOULDN'T DEMONISE IT

Academia needs to be kinder. A recent review included: “I am very interested in the topic, but I am sorry to state my excitement died quickly”. Let’s think about how statements like this affect student authors. Constructive criticism is useful, but this is unnecessarily vitriolic

Trauma in childhood can lead to PTSD, and can affect brain and social-emotional development. There is a large body of research on childhood trauma that is relevant to understanding why the enforced and traumatic separation of children from their families is abhorrent.

It’s reassuring to see how many adults are on the side of young people and have their backs. I think we should tell the teenagers we know (especially those in years 11 and 13) that lots of adults are fighting for them, even though it might seem like the system is against them.

Why do we even have GCSEs now that young people have to be in full time education (of some kind) until 18? We’re the only country that has national exams at both 16 and 18 and I have yet to hear a convincing argument for keeping GCSEs. (And don’t get me started on SATS).

NEW: Conservatives are safeguarding scientific research from the denial of biology and the steady creep of political correctness. @michelledonelan announces plans to depoliticise science at #CPC23

This is interesting. Although some children & young people are finding social distancing hard, others are not. There are large individual differences and studies looking at the effects of social distancing & Covid-19 should account for them, and not assume it's all negative

One of the most poignant points I heard today in a @Barnardos_IRL staff meeting was there has been a noticeable drop in anxiety in a proportion of the children we work with - the kids that get mercilessly bullied day after day in school feel safer and happier at home.

We need to start having a big conversation about GCSEs. How can they go ahead next year (2021) when many students have already missed a significant fraction of their courses? The inequalities are vast. And this is an opportunity to reconsider GCSEs completely - are they needed?

Honoured to be giving the first Sir Colin Blakemore Annual Lecture at Edinburgh Neuroscience on 9th March. My dad was amazed and delighted when he was told weeks before he died that the annual lecture was going to be named after him.

Getting emails from journals telling me crossly that I'm late with reviews. Hello. There's a pandemic out there. Everything is delayed, *everything*.

As reviewers, yes, we need to be critical, but we never need to be cruel. As an editor, I have once or twice removed statements like this from reviews because they add nothing constructive to the review. We should make an effort to improve others' self-esteem, not harm it

Prof Sarah Gilbert was characteristically impressive on #Marr . Marr asked about social distancing and she said, ‘that is not my field of expertise...’ We should all say that more. Sometimes it’s tempting to state our views but it’s not a good idea when it’s outside our area
