I am proud to have stood beside so many new Afghan neighbors and volunteers from myriad orgs who continue to help Afghans relocate following the US withdrawal in August 2021.
There will be some news stories coming about yesterday’s event but here is some of my perspective.
Yesterday, members of the
#AfghanEvac
coalition joined volunteers from across the ecosystem for a
@WhiteHouse
event hosted by the NSC to recognize the work of the dedicated Afghans & volunteers who put their hearts and souls into this relocation & resettlement effort.
Do not listen to this hatred. I have yet to meet someone involved in the
#AfghanEvac
effort who shares this man’s feelings. Folks from across the ideological spectrum are working together and I’ve seen only welcoming attitudes. These refugees are welcome in our neighborhoods.
Today I learned that 75 refugees from Afghanistan will be arriving in Montana. I strongly oppose the resettlement of these Afghan nationals in Montana.
So proud to be here standing with the Hazara community here in San Diego and across the world to
#StopHazaraGenocide
.
If you’re in
#SanDiego
, whether you’re
#Afghan
or not, please come stand in solidarity with us.
#AfghanEvac
Accountability will come for Afghanistan, but right now let’s all focus on getting folks out. Break down every barrier.
If you are in Kabul and have a passport and visa, fill out this form. I’m working with a coalition of folks to get you out.
@HumorAssured
@RepSwalwell
Rep Swalwell has been helping with evac efforts since day 1. His office has and had more cases than any other office. He has kept his commitment to keep partisanship out of this.
Just got a call from

@afghanevac
a heartfelt thank you for their tireless efforts, credited the team with much of the success realized, and committed to an ongoing relocation and

Governments across the world are really stepping up for Ukraine. The solidarity with refugees, in particular.
Imagine if the world had done that for Afghans last summer instead of so much of it falling onto volunteers and private donors after withdrawal.
#AfghanEvac
Members of the
#AfghanEvac
coalition met with
@WhiteHouse
staff today to discuss the open letter we released earlier this week. The meeting went well and we agreed to continue our work together toward many of the provisions in the letter that need to be addressed.

and the rest of state government.
We all know that’s bullshit. Those folks don’t give a shit or they would cause change.
I’m (nearly) speechless. Signing this
@afghanevac
MOU w/
@SecBlinken
was a huge milestone. It shows
@StateDept
is in for the long haul to resettle our Afghan allies. Let’s get back to work!

To our
#Afghan
friends in need: I am so sorry about the situation you are currently experiencing. In the new year, I wish you safety, security, and a path to prosperity. The organizations that make up the
#AfghanEvac
coalition are going to keep pushing to help you however we can.
I don’t know who needs to hear this (I do, it’s USCIS) but if we waived the fees for humanitarian parole we would be eliminating a big hurdle to helping Afghan folks in desperate need. It doesn’t require legislation. Let’s get it done & keep the
#AfghanEvac
going
Imagine being an Afghan reading this as you are cold, starving, and afraid for your life following having served shoulder to shoulder with the US military.
What about all the afghans who are already here who have been waiting for months to find housing?
BREAKING: A U.S. official says the United States will welcome up to 100,000 refugees from Ukraine. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity ahead of the announcement.
At least 3.5 million people have fled Ukraine since Russia’s invasion.
Just before this was taken, we discussed issues related to Afghanistan. I emphasized in particular the bottlenecks at the beginning & end of the relocation / resettlement pipelines and how badly we need the
#AfghanAdjustmentAct
.
He thanked me for the work of

I had the pleasure today of enjoying a meal with
@FaridNaheed
and welcoming her to the
#AfghanEvac
team. We spoke at length about civic engagement, the intersection of women and national security, and the path ahead for
#Afghans
all over the world.
Raise your hand if you think
@DeptofDefense
should operate safe havens on US bases for as long as necessary. This will help process SIVs and other

our veterans, active duty servicemembers, and frontline civilians served alongside and to whom we made promises.
#AfghanEvac
On Monday, I departed LAX for a short but very fruitful visit to Doha, Qatar as part of a trip that
@RepSwalwell
put together.
We visited Afghans awaiting processing and onward travel to the US and met with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Very frustrated that
@TomCottonAR
, or his team, are blocking the
#AfghanAdjustmentAct
from getting a vote on the senate floor.
You can help by calling his office and telling him to get out of the way.
We are down to crunch time and we need all hands on deck.
Just left a productive meeting with
@SecBlinken
and fellow
#AfghanEvac
coalition members. I am proud of what we’ve built together and hopeful that other government partners will meet with us to broaden the collaboration and impact. Our statement:
Back home after a few days in DC pushing for
@POTUS
to include an adjustment of status for newly arrived
#Afghans
in the
@WhiteHouse
request to the Hill for the Ukraine Supplemental.
Please RT if you agree!
My entire generation of veterans, and the generation that came after us, had our lives altered due to the unjust wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Too many friends lost too soon. Graves scattered throughout veterans cemeteries honoring millennials killed in action.
Afghanistan has dictated every major, & most minor, decisions of my past 18 years. I do not know how many friends I’ve lost there. 30? Maybe more? I stopped counting & don’t dare try now. Afghanistan is why I had to give up my career. Afghanistan is why I gave birth alone.
Imagine if
@elonmusk
used $44 billion to help Afghans, or any other vulnerable people, instead of burning it in effigy for all the world to see.
The amount of good this money could do is extraordinary. And instead, it’s just killing this global town square.
The sixth month anniversary of the fall of Kabul was this week. That means that many of us working
#AfghanEvac
have been going 24/7 for 1/2 a year.
This work is hard, unforgiving, and not exactly full of wins, so let’s give ourselves & those with whom we are working some grace.

friends, waking up this Sunday morning. I want you to know that the
@afghanevac
coalition stands with you.
I am so sorry you are experiencing these awful circumstances. Please stay warm and safe. We will do everything we can to make the change necessary to get you out.
Just landed in Washington, DC for the final trip here this year.
Rest assured the 120+ organizations that make up the
#AfghanEvac
coalition are going to keep pushing in the new year toward the changes we believe necessary to keep our commitments to our allies.
I'm looking to chat with Dem & GOP leaders in the House & Senate who are committed to continued, non-partisan
#AfghanEvac
efforts. Partisan politics will only kill our efforts so we must work together. Vets are united on this, we will stand strong with those willing to work.
It’s a big f-ing deal that the
@WhiteHouse
acknowledges the impact that
@AfghanEvac
has made AND our close partnership with them working toward myriad successes for our wartime allies.
This message of gratitude from NSC CoS is the latest in our Days of Gratitude series.

Excited to hear that
@POTUS
included an adjustment of status for newly arrived

in his request to congress.
So proud of the work the entire
@afghanevac
team did to get this done and grateful to the team at the
@WhiteHouse
for hearing us.
More to do / statement to follow.
We are watching todays remarks with bated breath to see if
@POTUS
and
@WHCOS
heard the pleas for relief from Afghans as their plight has faded from the headlines. We hope to see an adjustment of status for our new neighbors included in this request.

Afghans have stood with us for years. It’s time for bipartisan members if congress to stand with them. Call your members of congress today and ask them to have the backs of our wartime allies.
We just got word that the Ukrainian American Veterans (UAV) organization has just endorsed the
#AfghanAdjustmentAct
.
What a lovely day for this news, on the cusp of President Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington!
Elected officials: My fellow vets and I will not be used as political tools in whatever partisan nonsense you have cooking. Get onboard with helping Afghans or find yourself called on your bullshit when you say you support the troops.
We have receipts. We know who is helping.

If you are getting offers for any charter flights you should ask some questions before accepting. Who is organizing the flight? Where is it going? What is the plan to move on from there?
Weekly reminder: part of the magic of
#AfghanEvac
is that we don’t engage in partisan rhetoric because we know that’s where our efforts go to die. If you believe in our cause, please follow that lead.
Afghan friends: please be careful with what you share on social media and with whom. Frustration with the slow process is normal but please don’t put yourself at risk.
#AfghanEvac
Thinking tonight about the allies waking up still in Afghanistan, left behind by the most powerful nation in the world.
I wish things were different but there are a lot of folks around the world who refuse to let our neighbors forget. Stay safe, your day will come.
#AfghanEvac
Lots of folks are eager to help with the
#AfghanEvac
efforts. Our coalition spent some time discussing what we believe would move the needle the most. Here is what we came up with 🧵
Today is the last day. Our last shot at ensuring
#Afghans
the held they need (and have earned) before the midterms in Nov.
We need Republicans calling their friends in DC. This was bipartisan in August and we need to see the same urgency today we saw them.
#AfghanAdjustmentAct
Today is a big day for the
@AfghanEvac
team and none of us could do it without the support of our loved ones.
Friends and family have lifted all of us up throughout this journey and we know it hasn’t been easy.
Took some time off work and I'm on an plane, heading back to Washington, DC for another week focused on
#AfghanEvac
so I wanted to provide an update.
As always, you can find resources and more information at

If you are in Kabul and have a passport and visa, fill out this form. I’m working with a coalition of folks to get you out.
Just visited a migrant shelter in Tijuana filled with Afghan families who have made the dangerous journey here on foot.
I spoke with an SIV eligible applicant with 4 kids who has been awaiting processing since 2021.
He is one block from the border.
This is bullshit.

Thinking a lot today about how we are 10 months in to the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
The world may have moved on. Veterans and frontline civilians have not. We are and will continue pushing, even if folks don’t see it publicly. Progress is being made, but it’s too slow.
An update on
#afghanistan
:
The
#AfghanEvac
coalition and other groups have not forgotten the American citizens, legal permanent residents, visa holders, and other Afghan allies who are still in Afghanistan. We are continuing to work to find ways for you to leave the country.
Just landed in San Diego after a successful week in DC working with
#AfghanEvac
member orgs and our federal gov partners.
Some promising stuff coming out over the next week or two and I’m so proud of what we are doing together to make an impact that matters on human beings.
As sun rises today in Washington, I can’t help but wonder if congressional leadership are going to do the right thing and include the
#AfghanAdjustmentAct
or if they are going to relegate vulnerable allies who’ve stood with us to ever more uncertainty and danger.
Got to spend some time welcoming dozens of new San Diegans from Afghanistan at
@BalboaPark
. Some of our
#AfghanEvac
team enjoyed a picnic with these resilient folks awaiting permanent housing and the incredible volunteers from
#HECR
. Such a bright spot in a dark time.
An update🧵 on
#AfghanEvac
1. Humanitarian Parole
Tens of thousands of applications have been received related to
#Afghanistan
Lots of staff has been brought in to start adjudicating apps and approvals / denials will likely start going out at a faster clip next week.
#MerryChristmas
to all who celebrate, and in particular to anyone working on the
#AfghanEvac
effort. Take a break today and enjoy some time with family, blood or chosen.
My heart is breaking reading the emails, DMs, and texts of so many folks that who likely have little or no hope to get out of
#Afghanistan
without significant legislative change. Keep the faith friends, lots of advocacy working to push some fixes soon.
#AfghanEvac
Today, the US Senate made the regrettable decision not to include the
#AfghanAdjustmentAct
in the
#FY23Omnibus
. To say we are disappointed & dismayed is a gross understatement. This bill was crucial to
#keepthepromise
we made to our Afghan allies—a promise the Senate has broken.
I was honored to be invited to the signing of the
#PACT
Act today at the White House.
Today was huge, and it was lovely to see many so friends. Veterans across this country (and
@jonstewart
) are committed to continuing the momentum and turning toward the
#AfghanAdjustmentAct
.
I am committed to the ruthless, vocal opposition of any elected official not supporting the
#AfghanAdjustmentAct
or the
#PACTAct
.
Most veterans agree and it would be better if we could just get these things done instead of having to force it, but fuck around and find out.
I don’t know who needs to hear this (I do): if you helped with the
#AfghanEvac
efforts from August to November then we expect you will be supportive of the
#AfghanAdjustmentAct
.
It was a nonpartisan, cross-ideological effort and it is incumbent upon all of us to finish the job.
#Afghans
in
#Pakistan
: We hear you. I am so sorry you remain in waiting for processing to begin. We are told that the delay on processing P1/P2 cases is related to receipt of necessary permissions from the Pakistani government, who are fully focused on response to flooding.
Thinking a lot today about how our country is failing at the mission of welcoming
#Afghans
.
We have got to do better. And we need everyone rowing in the same direction. That means congress has to do more than just pay us lip service.
90 Afghans visited the Embassy today for immigrant visa interviews. Thank you, UAE, for your generous and ongoing support to these individuals and many others eligible for onward relocation and entry in the United States.

After arriving at the Kabul airport on Wednesday and traveling to 2 other locations, my friend Lucky and his family just got on a flight to Washington, DC. I'm so excited that they're returning home and so sad that this has been such an arduous journey for them.
#AfghanEvac
Passing the
#AfghanAdjustmentAct
doesn't put a bow on Afghanistan. Instead, it would allow the work of relocation & resettlement of our allies to continue, here at home and abroad.
#Afghans
here & abroad cannot wait until 2023 for relief. They need help now.
#StandWithVets
Afghans, US vets,
#AfghanEvac
volunteers—now is a time of pain for all impacted by the fall of Kabul.
1 year later, many are still actively struggling or haunted.
I want to share, I broke down today. Because I want us to know WE DON’T HAVE TO HURT ALONE.🧵
On my flight home from a trip to DC and can’t wait to squeeze my family tight.
I have been reflecting on the ongoing
#AfghanEvac
work, both the successes realized and the challenges that remain. First and foremost, I remain in awe of the resilience and optimism of Afghans.
Another energizing and exhausting week working on
#AfghanEvac
in DC.
Specifically, we met with the
@WhiteHouse
,
@DeptofDefense
, and
@StateDept
teams with whom we’ve been working to discuss various mechanisms for increasing capacity and throughput for resettlement and evac.
#Afghans
still waiting: we haven’t forgotten you & won’t let political leaders forget about the promises made to you.
The elections have sucked up all of the media attention, but we will continue to push to ensure your challenges are highlighted to leaders across the spectrum.
I haven’t seen this beautiful baby in about a week. Got to wake her up this morning and we are watching Monsters, Inc to start the day.
Can y’all believe she turns 2 this week?
Excited to be heading back after a successful
#AfghanEvac
trip to DC. Lots of progress this week, including the weekend appointment of Curtis Ried to lead and the issuance of new general licenses from treasury. Next: we must appoint and quickly confirm an Ambassador to Qatar.
Honestly I can’t believe there’s a profile of me on the front page of the newspaper today. But here it is.
Thank you to all the friends who said nice things about me.
