Hi everyone want to announce that starting today I'm shifting gears
@HoustonChron
to cover education, with a focus on the HISD takeover and how it impacts students, families, teachers, staff etc
If you are any of the above and want to talk, my email is in my bio :)
Addressing NRA attendees: โyou are not our enemy and we are not yours, but the time to join us is nowโ
Addressing NRA leadership and politicians who accept their money: โif youโve done one good thing, itโs bringing us here together, and we will defeat youโ
- Beto OโRourke
Beto O'Rourke visited the Houston Women's Reproductive Services clinic today as Texas's abortion "trigger ban" took effect.
He, along with the women and doctors who also spoke out against the ban, urged voters to fight back at the polls in November.
At least 100 local Tigrayans went to the Turkish consulate today to protest the alleged sale of drones to the Ethiopian military, which has been brutalizing civilians in Tigray, the northern region of Ethiopia, for almost a year
Gov. Abbottโs โparent empowerment nightโ was just interrupted by
@Cesar_Espinosa
from FIEL and another protester, shouting โGreg abbott you gotta go.โ Espinosa also called him out for calling the 5 people killed in Cleveland illegal
Abbott is here to tout school vouchers

Got to CPD HQ for the end of JaโMal Greenโs action. When I got there, he was going down the line of officers guarding the building, reading their individual lists of complaints
Big cheers for Rochelle Garza, whoโs running to unseat AG Ken Paxton.
โHe wants to arm teachers who are overworked and underpaid instead of doing his job. He wants to put the responsibility in their handsโ
About 100 people came out to oppose an anti-trans group from Dallas who had planned a protest at the Hamburger Mary's drag show.
Only about a dozen anti-trans protesters showed up, but they were joined by a few, um, Nazis.
Families and staff with Little Angels in Englewood have been camped out across the street from Lightfootโs house bc the city cut the funding for their early learning center, and the money is about to run dry (1/ )
Remember the HISD convocation in August, which included an hourlong musical written by and starring Mike Miles? Public records we got back from the district this week indicate it cost nearly $470,000 in taxpayer money
trying to walk more in Houston means arriving to the coffee shop having completely sweated through my shirt, and then soaking it again by walking home in a thunderstorm after
Had the pleasure of spending a day with โฆ
@thepoetmendez
โฉ learning about the fascinating history of Houstonโs huelga schools, when in the 1970s Chicanos homeschooled thousands of their kids to protest HISDs racist desegregation policy
Chants now of โJustice for Miracle,โ referring to Miracle Boyd, the GKMC who had her teeth knocked out by CPD at the protest in Grant Park last week
HISD Police just removed a woman who went over her allotted speaking time after multiple warnings to stop. She had sat down and finished speaking by the time police removed her.
Barricades all along the sidewalk between Discovery Green, where protests are planned for tomorrowโs NRA convention, and the GRB Convention Center already
โJustice For Jalenโ signs out here too. Video was released earlier this week of a Houston police officer fatally shooting Jalen Randle, who had no weapon in his hand
AP Physics students at DeBakey havenโt had a teacher all year, leaving students to teach themselves and, in some cases, be pulled out of class to teach their peers.
When students demanded answers, they were told there was a hiring freeze. My latest โฌ๏ธ
Scene report!
Spent a few weeks going to shows in living rooms and garages and bars talking with the people that make up Houston's DIY scene. These folks are fucking rad and so kind, really a lovely community. And they go hard as hell.
Cops holding their line at Kimball and Wrightwood, half a block from Lightfoots house, as per usual. Crowd is loud tho Im sure she can hear if sheโs home
I'm writing up my article in the NRA press room rn, watching Donald Trump deliver his remarks. He said every school needs "a single point of entrance, strong exterior fencing, metal detectors... and armed guards."
So a prison?
Mayor Lori Lightfoot will be in the spotlight Monday, the kickoff night of the Democratic convention, when she appears on a prime time panel with Joe Biden focusing on racial and social justice.
Livestream of the HISD convocation in which Mike Miles is acting in some sort of musical theatre performance. This is my first year covering schools is this sort of thing normal?
Pardon my sentimentality but this week marks one year in Houston and Iโm just rly glad to say I found all these things and so much more
Iโm lucky to have a job that exposes me to so many passionate people in such a fascinating city, and I donโt take that for granted ๐งก
Gonna spend the next month studying up on Houston and looking desperately for an apartment. DMs are open and would really appreciate suggestions both professional (orgs, activists, stories to follow) and personal (neighborhoods, music venues, dive bars, pickup b-ball games, etc)

@fotografolara
and I spent time with migrants at the border and followed them on their 24hr bus ride north to Chicago.
We wanted to avoid the political posturing and see what this experience was really like for the people involved. Hope youโll read.
Whenever I talked to people about Northside, I kept hearing mention of a place called Poppa Burger, and I got curious.
So I went and learned the history of the 24/7 burger stand that's served Northsiders for the past 60 years, and wrote about it here.

Houston has a very small, but tightknit Hmong community, and a few people were gracious enough to talk about what it meant to see Suni Lee, the first Hmong American to compete in the Olympics, shine on a global stage
Over 100 HISD teachers called in sick today to protest Mike Miles' leadership, according to protest organizers. Its the first coordinated work stoppage since Miles took over.
Both teachers unions said they had nothing to do with today's action
Hi so uhhh I picked up an abandoned dog on assignment today and now sheโs mine I guess but tbh I am probably not equipped to responsibly take care of a dog at the moment so does anyone want a very sweet and playful pup???? She is full of love, not a mean bone in her body
City officials confirmed today that they'll be delaying demolition permits for the Lofts at the Ballpark until federal highway authorities get more answers from TxDOT
My sister won a raffle at Duke for Final Four tix but they didnโt pay for her transportation so this girl is currently on a 21hr greyhound bus to New Orleans lmaoooooooo respect tho
This man
@NaderDIssa
used his vacation time to help organize
#FOIAFest
after expertly covering (another) massive, nonstop labor dispute during a pandemic. We don't deserve him.
The man of the hour,
@NaderDIssa
, welcoming everyone to the 2021
#FOIAFest

@headlineclub
with more than 400 people, including 200 FREE tickets. ๐๐๐

- nice old ladies who call me โangelโ and โsonโ
- liquor stores w food trucks in the parking lot
Things I donโt like:
- the astros
Fwiw Miles cancelled an interview with KHOU due to "comprehensive preparations underway for the start of the academic year." I'm no actor but I imagine it took a long time to memorize all the lines in this very elaborate musical

About 100 (Iโm estimating) people out at HISD hq for the
@HoustonCVPE
protest against the state takeover, with the first Board of Managers meeting set to start in about an hour
Just got to downtown, immediately saw 10 or so cop cars zooming east on Kinzie, not sure where to. Someone smashing a CVS window. Lots of โfuck 12โ chants from protestors and ppl in cars. Gonna be tweeting what I see, so content warning for police brutality, violence
Developers ripped out part of a brand new fence at Houstonโs oldest Black cemetery last month. They say it was a mistake and that theyโll re-erect the fence, but caretakers say it falls into a larger pattern of disrespect. Latest for the Chronicle:
This week has sucked but one bright spot was when a 50yo man walked up the b-ball court just now and immediately challenged me in 1-on-1, but his wife wouldnโt let him play until he drank some of his blue Powerade.
Then she filmed the whole game for FB Live ๐ฅบ
Multiple people Iโve spoken to already have identified themselves as pro-gun, but theyโre fed up with the NRAโs โabsolutism.โ
โTheyโre subordinating kids rights for gun rights,โ one 65yo man told me
โWe do this every year โ itโs like a tradition... Weโre just cruising, I donโt feel like weโre up to no good. Weโre just literally cruising, beeping, โViva Mexico,โ and thatโs it.โ
Here at the anti-NRA protest in Houston, I just witnessed North Texas based right wing provocateur who goes by the name Chet Goldstein get ejected by the crowd for trying to disrupt the event
As a subscriber, fellow journalist and Texas resident, I'll be the first to say this sucks and feels like a major letdown from an organization that does such good work. Solidarity with their staff.
Texas Tribune laid off staff today, citing changes in the industry and an unsteady economy. Here's the note CEO Sonal Shah sent to the publication's employees this afternoon.
Bulldozers starting to clear the scene.
โThe police system is messed up, itโs like theyโre more aggressive to men and women of color,โ one woman said as she watched. โAnd I hate for it to come to this, but how else are they going to listen? Itโs sad but itโs needed.โ
Getting out of my element to join the Northeastern Trail Riders on a weeklong horse-and-wagon ride to the Houston Rodeo. I'll be sending daily dispatches from the trail next week, but penned a short preview detailing my preparation for the trip here โฌ๏ธ
One protestor stood silently watching the dumpsters burn at Grand and LaSalle.
โI donโt know if this is the right way to do this, but who cares as long as someone is listeningโ
Every city and every newspaper needs more journalists like Anna, who has been the best reporting partner I could have asked for and a wonderful friend besides.
California is getting a good one, and we will miss her greatly :')
Some news: Today is my last day at
@HoustonChron
after 3.5 years in this wonderful newsroom. Big thanks to everyone who made it special.
Next week, Iโm starting a new role as an Investigative Reporter at
@OpenVallejo
in the Bay Area. Incredibly excited to get started!
Catanzara and this man in a vagina suit went at it for awhile, in a conversation that truly ran the gamut. The vagina suit bc โitโs harder to kill a vagina than a Black manโ
A bit of a change of pace but the former spelling bee kid in me couldnโt let news pass of a 1st grader (!) winning the HISD citywide spelling bee without writing about it. Zachary rules, read about him here
Thanks to
@htxcommfridges
for letting me hang while they set up their new installation at Project Row Houses! When it's done, it'll feature a library of Black literature, community resource info, a workspace with WiFi and, of course, food and other goods
