today feels like something out of the 1950s: "Everyone at Tesla is required to spend a minimum of 40 hours in the office per week". Very different approach to what we are taking at Atlassian and here's why. 🧵 (1/5)
In the past year alone, 42% of our new hires globally live 2 or more hours from an office. There is great talent all over the world - not just within a 1hr radius of our offices. (4/5)
Atlassian used to share big company changes in "town halls" then follow with written info. Recently swapped - share company updates in Confluence 2-5 days ahead of the town hall. Staff asked much more informed Qs this way around. We will do it this way going forward.
Why? This is the future of how we will work. Highly distributed, highly flexible. Yes, right now it's not perfect, but we have to experiment to get it right. (3/5)
Atlassian,
@canva
,
@NEXTDC
and other Aussie tech companies will continue to pay our hourly workers even though many of our employees are now working from home. We'd like to encourage other companies to do the same.
A huge step forward for Australia's tech industry. We just sent a very loud signal to the rest of the world that we’re open for business and in the race for the biggest industry on the planet. Thanks
@GladysB
.
The NSW Government is partnering with
@Atlassian
to create a major new tech and innovation precinct, stretching from Central Station to Eveleigh. This will cement Sydney as the tech capital of Australia and will look to create 10,000 new jobs.

On the heels of cuts to skilled migration, unworkable privacy laws and cuts to govt funded R&D (totalling $4B cut so far), I didn't think it could get worse for tech jobs in Australia. But it has.
Incredibly proud of the whole
@Atlassian
workplace team 👏🏻
The NSW Tech Central Precinct + our new building are precisely the sort of smart, green recovery project Australia 's economy needs.
The entire team has _nailed_ the brief 🌱👩🏻💻

Norway just put the worlds largest electric ferry ⛴ into operation. Backed by 4.3 MWh batteries this badboy can move 200 cars/24 trucks, and 600 passengers across one of Norway’s busiest routes. At 20 trips per day, requires an impressive 7.2 MW megacharger.

During COVID we took a big bet on remote work. It made sense, as we already had employees in 10+ countries. Today, majority of hires live >2hrs from an office and these amazing, talented people couldn't work for us otherwise. Proud to be recognized as a great place to work
We are so proud to announce that we’ve hit an amazing milestone - we were ranked

, we couldn’t have done it without you! 💙
Mind just blown by finding out that all 9 people from this 2007 photo of the Confluence team are working at Atlassian! Some left & came back, but all still here!
Congratulations to my cofounder

on a great article about his influence on biz & politics: - Mike has done an incredible job championing climate change - one of the issues of our time. Thanks for your leadership Mike.
Atlassian employees have lived through wildfires, blizzards, typhoons and more in recent years due to climate change, which is why we’re committed to a net-zero future. I’m asking other business leaders to join us:
I'm strongly opposed to the proposed voter id laws that are solving a problem that doesn't exist: "vanishingly small" from the head of the electoral commission. I'm encouraging
@JacquiLambie

@Stirling_G
to vote against it:
Though technology is the largest and fastest growing industry on the planet, the federal government has churned through 7 ministers in 8 years in the technology and innovation portfolio. This article nails it:
Do you feel you’re working longer hours? You’re not alone. We looked across our products and found Atlassian users were spending more time online, taking shorter breaks, and never really signing off. See our full findings here:
The Atlassian ecosystem has hundreds of examples of companies who have built substantial businesses serving our customers with things we can’t or won’t do. Totally agree.
Substantially every large software company will eventually do an “ecosystem” play, and the combination of wide distribution, business users with few internal engineering hours available, and interoperable APIs makes it a fertile ground for adjacent small SaaS companies.
Huge congratulations to my wife Kim, recognised today for all that she does for women, through both Pledge 1% and the great work Skip Capital does in supporting female founders

I once had a truck driver try to sideswipe me on Anzac parade in 2015. I’ve never been so angry and scared. I’m not sure why my life is worth less than his. Have barely ridden on roads since. That this driver only got $1k fine is a disgrace to justice.
Unprecedented events are rapidly changing the way teams work together. While working remotely is the right thing to do at this time, it’s disruptive to make this transition. And it’s especially hard for small teams. 1/3
A few years ago I started

Remote work with Atlassian’s TeamAnywhere is working so well. With other companies forcing people back to the office, we are taking the opposite approach:
Hello from
@Atlassian
India! This a key R&D hub for us and our fastest growing region. From hiring our first employee here five years ago to 1,700 people today and growing with 50% working remote. And already kicking goals as 8th Best Place to Work. I am so proud of this team.
I could not be more excited about Atlassian being named a Top 25 workplace _in the world_ - a testament to the incredible team and the culture they have created. Come join us - we're hiring!

Without any consultation, the government aims to rush through legislation aimed at “abhorrent violent material”. Let me be clear, no-one wants this material on the internet. But the legislation is flawed and will unnecessarily cost jobs and damage our tech industry.
I want to give credit where it is due. PM's speech today was clear, clam and gave good rationale for all measures. I would still encourage more people to stay home where they can, but comms from him was clear
I'm super proud that 69% of our almost 5,000 Atlassian employees donated their time for volunteering in the last year. Incredible, before you even consider the COVID headwinds. Thanks team! I'd encourage other companies to do similarly - join

I'm calling on the government to send this legislation to a committee for due diligence and consult properly with industry. In its blind rush to legislate, the government is creating confusion and threatening jobs.
Big things happening for the Jira suite. If only we had Jira Product Discovery when

Even mining companies are betting their future on software and automation. We are proud to help these companies transition to being software companies.
"Under political pressure, Matt Kean reportedly asked Mr Turnbull to stop talking down coal in his position as chair of the NSW Net Zero Emissions and Clean Economy Board". - How can be responsible for “net zero emissions” and not talk down coal?
Despite an explicit carve-out for "professional journalists" (which makes no sense in the context of user generated content), even mainstream media are up in arms:

The current legislation means that anyone working for a company that allows user generated content could potentially go to jail for 3 years. As written, that applies to news sites, social media sites, dating sites, job sites - anywhere user content could be created.
If the material in question is uploaded and you don’t take it down “expeditiously”, you can go to jail. What is expeditiously? Not defined! “Who” in a company? Not defined!
From the party that says they are about jobs & the economy, I can’t fathom how & why the government would introduce such flawed legislation that puts more tech jobs in jeopardy.
Never has petty party politics so clearly been on display. This flawed legislation just passed parliament. The ALP agreed it was flawed but supported it anyway (WTF?). We elect officials to do what's best for the country, but they are point scoring instead
On the heels of cuts to skilled migration, unworkable privacy laws and cuts to govt funded R&D (totalling $4B cut so far), I didn't think it could get worse for tech jobs in Australia. But it has.
Research shows diverse teams produce better results. Tech hasn't fully embraced neurodiversity... but a few small shifts in our hiring practices could go a long way toward changing that.

With Covid cases at record highs, I’m unsure the logic behind removing the lowest cost, highest impact method for contact tracing we have, particularly when it has already been implemented for every biz.
