Pau Gasol: "Becky Hammon can coach. I’m not saying she can coach pretty well...not saying she can coach enough to get by...not saying she can coach almost at the level of the NBA’s male coaches. I’m saying: Becky Hammon can coach NBA basketball. Period."
Went nearly four hours of game time without a goal, while leaving at home one of the country’s best goal scorers.
Took a 38-year old forward who didn’t play well, and an 18-year old forward who hardly played, while leaving at home a 28-year old forward in her prime and in form.…
By a millimeter,
#USWNT
is heading home from the

after losing to Sweden in the Round of 16 on penalties. It's the 1st time they are eliminated before the Semifinals.
They ended the tournament on a 238-minute scoring drought, their longest in Women’s World Cup history.
Two P5 programs met before an announced crowd of 26,000 fans tonight.
Tomorrow, BYU is expected to sell out its 63,000-seat venue for a game against an FCS opponent.
The support of Cougar Nation has been outstanding this season—home and away!
BYU says today that after last night’s normal CT scans and additional testing/observation during an overnight hospital stay, DB Keenan Ellis is out of bed, walking and reports no neck or back pain.
Desmond Howard on College Gameday, re: committee chair on BYU: "For him to tell you, 'we watched the film, we were impressed with BYU'...which film did you watch? How could you be impressed and mark them at 14 below 3 teams w/ 2 losses? It just doesn't jive well with me at all."
To travel across the country and see so much BYU blue amid a sea of orange in one of the biggest and best venues in the game.
To see the Cougs rally from down double digits, then perform last-minute magic.
And to share it on the air with Cougar Nation.
It's been a great night.
Kirk Herbstreit on College Gameday today, re: evaluation of BYU as a potential CFP candidate: "They're winning games by an average of 45-13. What else can you ask them to do? I don't care what the schedule says. It's about what you're doing on the field, and they do everything."
Senior Night.
Sold out.
Streak-buster.
Coach Pope...gets his 100th win.
Court...gets stormed.
Cougs...get locked.
Marriott Center magic cast a spell.
Now we’ll all have a tale to tell.
In the meantime and in-between time, Cougar Nation, rest well.
What the committee should have said: “BYU’s strength of schedule is primarily a by-product of COVID cancellations by six P5 programs. BYU still scheduled 10 games and has so far won every one, by an average of 34 points per game. When we watch BYU, we see a Top 10 football team.”
USF head coach Jeff Scott says in postgame that having visited practically every ACC and SEC venue in the past, "this was one of the best I've ever been in--absolutely incredible."
Fact check:
BYU and Cincinnati are both 5-0 against teams with records of .500 or better.
BYU ranks ahead of Cincy in scoring offense/defense and total offense/defense.
Perhaps the committee should look more closely at "some of the differences."
CFP committee chair: "BYU has played 3 games against .500 or better opponents, but when you move over to Cincinnati, they're 4-0 against .500 teams...and Cincinnati is top 20 in both scoring offense and scoring defense. Those are some of the differences as we took a look at it."
Drew Brees on T. Hill: “I can’t say enough about him—just his contributions to the team, his mindset and his work ethic, his unselfishness...there is a lot on that guy’s plate, and he has handled it as well as anybody could handle it. I love being in the same room with the guy.”
ESPN's Rece Davis today on College Gameday, re: BYU: "I don't believe that their schedule is enough--their challenge is enough--to put them in the playoff. I also believe it would be a complete injustice if they finish undefeated and they don't go to a New Year's Six bowl."
It's that time again!

Final in Lawrence:
BYU 76
Kansas 68
BYU outshoots KU from the field, the arc and the stripe in handing the Jayhawks their first home loss of the season, ending their 19-game home win streak. It's BYU's first-ever win in Lawrence.
BYU improves to 20-8, 8-7 in the Big 12.
Saturday's game v. Boise State will be Kalani Sitake's 70th as BYU head coach. A BYU victory would give him 44 wins in 70 games.
After LaVell Edwards' 70th game, he had 44 wins.
It appears to be an almost universal opinion among college football observers and commentators that the CFP selection committee blew the BYU ranking last week. Will the committee take a mulligan on Tuesday?
CFP committee chair: "BYU's best win is over Boise State, and in that game I think they got down to their 3rd-string QB."
And in that game I think BYU got out to a 45-3 lead, on the blue turf. It was a woodshedding that merits far more credit than the committee gave the Cougars.
Bowlsby on BYU’s no-Sunday play policy: “We have events that are contested on Sunday that will have to be modified to accommodate BYU…and I consider that a very small consolation in having them be a part of your organization.”
STREAK BUSTERS!!! Wisconsin’s 41-game non-conference home win streak and 20-game regular-season win streak are both ended today by the visiting Cougars at Camp Randall!!
BYU 24 Wisconsin 21 (F)
The hay is in the NY6 barn for BYU. Now comes the waiting, watching, rooting and hoping.
Regardless of postseason destination, BYU’s 10-2 regular season will go down as one of the most outstanding campaigns in Cougar football history.
BYU is picking up speed on the path to P5.
Last year on a loud, late night at LaVell Edwards Stadium, Arizona State committed 16 penalties for 121 yards, including five false starts.
Tonight, in a sold-out stadium, Baylor committed 14 penalties for 117 yards, including four false starts.
Apologies to BYU listeners who had to deal with my throat issues during the game last night--I did my best to grind through.
I know my calls lacked a little of their usual vigor, and it pained me to not have enough in the tank to match what the team was giving me on the field.
Committee members are impressed by Cincinnati being in the top 20 in both scoring offense and scoring defense.
BYU is the only FBS team in the top 10 in scoring offense, scoring defense, total offense and total defense.
So maybe not that big a difference between the two teams.
Bronco Mendenhall, on walking into LaVell Edwards Stadium, and seeing "all the former players that I coached, and the reception from the fans, and neighbors and friends...and I'm coming down the ramp, leading our team, and I've got tears, and I'm happy and sad at the same time."
Saint Mary’s head coach Randy Bennett, as heard on our radio postgame show: “This is a tough place to play. It’s a great place to play. It’s a great atmosphere...I don’t know if there’s any college basketball atmosphere better than the one we played in tonight.”
After review by the BSU crew, BYU's sixth TD has been changed from a 1-yard Neil Pau'u rush to a 1-yard Zach Wilson pass to Pau'u. Initial ruling was a backward pass, changed to a forward pass.
Also, many thanks to everyone at BSU for the press box hospitality on Friday night.
I don’t think I had ever asked for a pic with Dave Rose, but after tonight’s hoops banquet, it felt like the right time.
I’m happy to have called his team’s games, and grateful for the many things learned over literally hundreds of on- and off-air conversations over the years:
Coach Sloan was—
Successful without being arrogant
Single-minded without being aloof
Fiercely competitive without being unsportsmanlike
Demanding without being unfair
Intimidating without being mean
The best.
Jaren Hall in postgame says he feels good and expects to be at practice on Monday and playing next week. "Got the wind knocked out of me...those are some big boys."
I’m an older guy with a job to do, but I felt like a member of the
@byuROC
during last night’s mosh pit at the scorer’s table.
To all the students who gave me a high five, or hug, or took a pic/vid or just screamed at me/with me...you made for some indelible memories.
Thanks!
One final opportunity to like or retweet this post for a chance to be drawn as one of three winners of dinner for two with me at Hotel Park City's
@RuthsChrisPC
on Aug. 21; it's always a fun evening of BYU sports talk in a beautiful setting.
We'll announce the winners on Monday.
ESPN’s College Gameday guys all picked BYU (guest picker and Coastal alum Dustin Johnson was the dissenting voice), and Lee Corso put on the Cosmo head:
Jim Rome this morning, on Taysom Hill starting at QB for the Saints: "I'm fascinated by this guy...this dude is electric, and he trucks fools. He'll run over you, he will run away from you, he'll put his shoulder down, he can throw it. Man, I love the guy. I can't wait."
Chandler to ESPN: "With (BYU) being a hometown school, it was special...I want to help take the program to the next step and help make it more of a national brand in basketball...playing in the Big 12, it gives me a chance to play against the best."
Of the six schools ranked in both the AP college football and college basketball polls this week, three are members of the New Big 12:
Alabama (3rd/10th)
Michigan (6th/20th)
Baylor (9th/6th)
BYU (13th/18th)
Houston (19th/12th)
Arkansas (25th/13th)
Houston point guard Jamal Shead on Big 12 Radio (SiriusXM 375), about having faced BYU in the Marriott Center on Tuesday night: “That’s probably the loudest gym I’ve ever been in.”
Kyle Whittingham this week: "BYU wore us out in the 2nd half...they started to wear us down and push us around…usually we don't soften up. Very disappointing to see that we were pushed around in the 2nd half. I can't remember the last time, if ever, that's happened like that."
Kalani Sitake on the 'unprecedented' nature of his new contract: "It's not a one-man show...for me, the unprecedented part is that it involves more than just the head coach."
AD Tom Holmoe: "We're taking this to another level here at BYU."
New BYU-Nike deal ‘more than doubles the annual value of the previous agreement’; Nike co-founder Phil Knight: “We’ve had a relationship with BYU for nearly 40 years now. We don’t have a better relationship in the country, than the one we have with BYU. We are very proud of it.”
Zach Wilson on ESPN’s ‘College Football Playoff: Top 25’ broadcast with Rece Davis tonight; Kirk Herbstreit on BYU: “I like them. I like them a lot. This team is legit.”
We said goodbye to my dad today, and what a beautiful day it was. BYU blue became a big part of his identity, and it was prominent during his final farewell.

President Monson showed constant kindness, shared divine direction, and provided selfless service. His ministry and leadership embodied Christlike attributes and profound humanity. He is beloved by so many, and I am among those who will so miss him.
Hawaii Bowl split-decision on College Gameday; Charles Barkley: “I love John Stockton and Karl Malone, so I’m going with BYU....that’s it—that’s all I’ve got.”
Works for me.
More Bronco on BYU joining the Big 12: "I'm glad...that BYU is acknowledged, and I think it's great for the institution. I think it's good for college football, and man, did I want that to happen bad when I was there, and to see it finally come to fruition, yeah, pretty cool."
Shout-out to Aly Khalifa.
Having played a total of 21 minutes for the season, and with BYU missing bigs, Aly comes in tonight v. NC State and:
plays 27 minutes
records a team-high +18
hands out a team-high five assists
grabs a team-high nine rebounds
adds five points
This guy.

BYU and SDSU will tomorrow meet at the Marriott Center for the first time since Jan. 26, 2011, when Jimmer Fredette scored 43 points and Kawhi Leonard went for 22 and 15 as the No. 9 Cougs beat the previously undefeated No. 4 Aztecs 71-58.
It was peak Jimmermania in Provo.
“Don’t say this system will allow the best team in the country to prove it on the field. Don’t call it a playoff. Call it what it really is: an invitational. And drop every pretense of fairness.”
AD Tom Holmoe on new BYU hoops head coach Kevin Young: “Kevin is someone we have had our eye on for a while. He has risen to the top of NBA assistant coaching ranks. He has been a lead candidate for NBA head coaching jobs and has been instrumental in developing top-level NBA…
