Great pleasure today to visit Abuja National stadium with my friend @DrJoeAbah . We were surprised at its usability despite a lack of expenditure on maintenance. Most telling impression was that facilities were being maintained by ordinary people or teams so they could use them.

@Naijavote Everyone who has booked to visit Yankari should still go ahead. The poster raised valid concerns, not going won't help. These places need all the visitors they can get or they will never improve. Go and see for yourself, post your experience and it will help them improve.

@DrJoeAbah The actual stadium is under-utilised but not in bad shape. center pitch needs relaying. The practice track adjacent is good and is a hive of activity every morning with various track clubs and football clubs using it. Contrary to comments there are no herdsmen grazing cattle

Most affirming fact from the visit was that no one we met today subscribed to the “govt did this - govt didn’t do that” hypothesis - they just got on with it, enjoyed their sport and maintained the facilities themselves in some cases. In ALL cases the kids benefited.

Didn’t name the airline for two reasons : 1) At the time I tweeted they had not yet uplifted me 😂 and i didn’t want to sleep in Lagos. 2) I have flown with them PEACEFULLY up until now and this was the first time i’ve had such a delay. Everyone deserves a second chance

@DrJoeAbah The dive pool is left unused and dirty as it takes different maintenance. It was a hugely expensive stadium but because of that it was very well constructed and is the reason today with some work that it could be brought back to its full operating state.

@DrJoeAbah The grounds are well fenced and there are no access points. There are multiple groundsmen who work hard seeding all the grass on various pitches but they are paid very low wages and usually unpaid. The main pool is maintained and is used daily.

@DrJoeAbah and @Onyi_Estelle No benchmarks, my daughteran experienced athlete ran there inside and outside for 3wks, we toured the grounds which are large, the outer grounds are scruffy but i stand by my description, It’s in usable shape and used by a host of athletes everyday

Open today’s newspapers and find me an article about youth sport. There was a national schools athletic development day recently and hardly anyone turned up!
