On July 21, 1990, in Berlin, Rick, Levon Helm and Garth Hudson joined Roger Waters for the concert The Wall, commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall. They performed Mother, along with Sinéad O'Connor.
Rick: "Robbie was always one of my favorite singers. But he was always shy of the microphone. Might have been an element of stage fright there. He would sing the parts for us, and we would reproduce them."
RIP Robbie Robertson 💔

It's Canadian Thanksgiving weekend and of course, Thanksgiving means The Last Waltz!
Canadians Neil Young and Joni Mitchell join The Band and perform Helpless, The Last Waltz, 1976.
In the aftermath of Robbie Robertson's death, I just want to share one of my favorite moments from The Last Waltz: Rick, Robbie and Richard Manuel performing Old Time Religion.

in 1966, Bob Dylan played at The Free Trade Hall in Manchester. Someone in the audience yelled: "Judas!" Bob snapped: "I don’t believe you! You’re a liar.” Then he turned to The Hawks and said, “Play fucking loud!” Iconic. So satisfying to watch (and hear)
Robbie Robertson: "For a long time Rick played a fretless bass while singing countermelodies and harmony and killer lead vocals. That's a full-on high-wire act. He had no idea how incredible I thought that was. For him, it was just normal."

Rick Danko would have been 80 today. When someone leaves this world too early, as Rick did, it's hard to imagine this person old.
He deserves to be remembered not only as an ingenious musician and a gifted singer, but most of all as a wonderful human being. Happy birthday❤️

post is from the Festival Express in 1970, with Rick, Janis, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Marmaduke and friends.
The version of It Makes No Difference The Band played at The Last Waltz has become a classic. Rick sang his heart out and Garth appeared beside him at the end of the song to play his sax solo. It’s one of those glorious moments of the concert, one that we wish could last forever.
On March 10, 1979, Rick Danko, Paul Butterfield and Gary Busey appeared on Saturday Night Live and performed a chaotic version of Stay All Night (Stay A Little Longer).
Remembering Dr. John, who would have turned 82 tomorrow. In November 1976, he performed with The Band at The Last Waltz, and Rick provided the backing vocals on the chorus of Such A Night. "If I don't do it, somebody else will."
Richard Manuel died on this day in 1986.
💔
Rick on Richard: "He brought a lot of powers and strengths to the group. He brought in gospel music from his church upbringing. Plus, he loved to play and just come up with new things. It was like having a force of nature in the band."
Remembering Jerry Garcia, who died

in 1995.
Iconic moment during The Festival Express with Rick, Jerry, Janis Joplin, Bobby Weir and Marmaduke.
"Thank you, Jerry Garcia."
On July 28, 1973, Summer Jam at Watkins Glen, New York, reunited The Band, The Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers. With a crowd of 600 000 people, it was the largest gathering for a rock festival, even bigger than Woodstock.

As this sad week for The Band fans comes to an end, Robbie Robertson's death is still hard to conceive. But we will still remember him in the next days with the anniversaries of Rock of Ages, Stage Fright, and of course, the Woodstock festival.
Stage Fright, The Band's third album, was released
#OnThisDay
in 1970. Rick sang the title track, and it became one of his signature songs. The Band performed Stage Fright on Saturday Night Live in October 1976.
I love the song Bessie Smith that Rick Danko co-wrote with Robbie Robertson. Their two voices blend beautifully on the track that first appeared on The Basement Tapes in 1975.
It's the saddest day of the year for Rick Danko Page. Rick passed away on this day in 1999. We love you, Rick.♥️
Carol Caffin, Rick's publicist, wrote these beautiful words included on the memorial card: "On the day Rick Danko was born, the angels sang. Rick sang harmony."
I Shall Be Released, written by Bob Dylan, appeared on The Band's first album in 1968. Two years later, they performed it beautifully at the Festival Express.
Still commemorating Rick’s death, and thinking of him today and every day.
Last year, on December 10, I shared this beautiful acoustic rendition of “Twilight” at Cruise Kafe, Oslo, Norway, in 1993. Actually, I shared it many times, but I just love this soulful performance.
The Festival Express, a Canadian train tour, started

in 1970 with The Band, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead and Buddy Guy to name a few. Here, on the train, Rick, Janis Joplin, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Marmaduke singing Ain't No More Cane.
The Band performing It Makes No Difference in Tokyo in 1983. Rick played this song until his death in 1999, and even after all those years, it was still beautiful and heartfelt.
It's the first anniversary of Rick Danko Page! When I launched it, I didn't know what I was doing. And I didn't know that I would end up with 3500 followers and would also create an Instagram account. Thank you everyone for your support.

Ronnie Hawkins
Brilliant musician, Ronnie Hawkins saw the exceptional talent of Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson and Robbie Robertson, and brought all of them together. The Band wouldn't have existed without him.
On August 31, 1969, Bob Dylan and The Band performed at the Isle of Wight Festival. Here, they are playing the beautiful I Threw It All Away, a version included on the album Another Self-Portrait.

Celebrating eclipse day, and also the anniversary of The Last Waltz soundtrack, released on April 7, 1978, which includes It Makes No Difference.
"And the sun don't shine anymore"
Still commemorating Levon Helm's death anniversary with one of my favorite songs: Don't Do It at the Academy of Music. It showcases the stunning talent of The Band's rhythm section.
Richard Manuel died on this day in 1986.💔
Rick about Richard "He brought a lot of powers and strengths to the group. He brought in gospel music from his church upbringing. Plus, he loved to play and just come up with new things. It was like having a force of nature in the band."
Next Wednesday will mark the 45th anniversary of The Last Waltz's premiere, so just in case you needed another reminder, this performance of It Makes No Difference is Rick at his best.

On March 10, 1979, Rick Danko, Paul Butterfield and Gary Busey appeared on Saturday Night Live and performed an incomparable (!) version of Stay All Night (Stay A Little Longer).
So sad to hear about David Crosby passing. Like Rick Danko, he was known for his beautiful harmonies. Rick and David, along with Levon Helm, collaborated on the song Revolution Blues on Neil Young's album On The Beach, released in 1974.

will take a break next Saturday for Rick's death anniversary, there is an extra post today.

performed at The Wembley Stadium before an audience of around 80 000 people. Notice the way Rick sings the line "Just never show the fear that's in your eyes" on Stage Fright. It makes me smile every time.
This week marks the anniversary of Rock Of Ages, a live album released by The Band on August 15, 1972. The entire album is a masterpiece. Don’t Do It, the first track (after the introduction) is no exception and showcases the genius of the rhythm section.
Levon Helm, Rick's long-time friend and bandmate, died on this day in 2012. Together they were a hell of a rhythm section, first with The Hawks, then later with The Band. They created a unique sound, all at once groovy and sophisticated.
This week marks the 52nd anniversary of the series of concerts The Band gave at the Academy of Music. In their unique way, and with horn section arranged by Allen Toussaint, they performed a rendition of Don't Do It, a song written by Holland/Dozier/Holland released in 1964.
It's Rick's birthday, and in my modest opinion, we can't mark any major event in Rick's life without It Makes No Difference at The Last Waltz. A beautiful, soulful and moving performance. Just like Rick.
Remembering Dr. John, who died on this day in 2019.
In November 1976, he performed with The Band at The Last Waltz, and Rick provided the backing vocals on the chorus of Such A Night. "If I don't do it, somebody else will."

Distinctive and poignant, When You Awake on The Band's self-titled album is one of Rick's most acclaimed performances. In 1997, in the documentary Classic Albums: The Band, he was still singing it with all his heart.
