I’ve been a developer for 25 and no. This isn’t a boss trying to learn or be helpful. It’s a boss saying incorrect things in public that undermine confidence in the company for spiteful and self-serving reasons.
Every day, someone who is justifiably anxious about and angry at the world wakes up, discovers that NFTs exist, and vents their impotent fury on something that they have hallucinated is wrong with NFTs after ten seconds of intense not-thinking about the subject.
I still can’t believe anyone thinks that painting on stretched canvas is anything other than a naked speculative cash grab based on avidly imitating bourgeois commodity forms of property.
My favourite part is the anti-crypto bros who are discarding any understanding of medium, industry, or economics, to perform the contemporary equivalent of laughing about how automobiles are just worse horses for clout and dopamine.
I'm starting an email newsletter for news about my art activities. If you have messaged me to ask about the availability of works in particular you'll want to sign up to it.
The first news will be along in the next few days.
You can sign up here -
New rule: I don’t debate NFTs. I block. If you want to learn about them I have published work on the matter. If you want to teach me about them then see the previous sentence.
O-kay.
If I was to write a post about:
* The non-zero utility of cryptocurrency.
* Energy usage.
* Centralization.
* Capitalism.
Would that make people happy?
Is there anything missing from that list?
Heya everyone. You’ll notice that I’ve updated my name and pronouns. I have a new Twitter handle (
@rheaplex
) and a new website ( ). When writing about or exhibiting my work - past or present - you should use these details. DM me any questions. Tx!😺
I’m thrilled to announce that “Secret Artwork (Content)”, my first actual factual ERC-721 NFT piece from 2018 (after making blockchain art since 2014) is in “Natively Digital: A Curated NFT Sale” at Sotheby’s.

People don’t realize that when you buy a painting all you’re getting is a piece of fabric with some coloured creams smeared on - you don’t even get the copyright! How is this worth anything???
One year ago today I started HRT. It’s given me peace, joy, and occasional tearful outbursts on behalf of kittens. I got it safely and without administrative delays through informed consent. Support trans healthcare. 🏳️⚧️
I found a tx in an ancient block
With an output that encoded:
“Behold the metadata hash of
OGmandias, crypto superstar.
ipfs fetch my works and despair!”
Yet the pin is lost, that txout
Is all that remains, buried ever deeper
In the chain as miners ceaseless hash away.

Did you know that an image file doesn’t actually contain the image? It just contains a (usually compressed) digital description of its content that can be rendered by software. If you don’t know the format it’s just meaningless bits.
🤯
Did you know that a screen doesn’t actually contain the image being displayed on it?
All these right clickers who think they’re doing something via the screen don’t realize that the image is actually in memory.
And just wait ‘til they find out about GPUs.
😂
The Mona Lisa is long since tokenized, and in the public domain, and widely forged on canvas, and widely photomechanically reproduced, and secured in an air conditioned facility that people burn many tonnes of kerosene to visit each year.

Cryptography - particularly cryptographic commitments, and unfalsifiable temporal ordering - the blockchain, are reality keys against the total postmodernism of AI.
As with every new technology, artists who actually do something with it are targeted for harassment by (wannabe) commercial illustrators who strangely don’t object to (or even notice) any of the technology they personally use despite how disruptive it was a generation ago.
I don’t want to get into it here but sometimes the anti-AI art crowd, which I largely agree with, treats art like it is exclusively about commercial illustration. They’re advocating against an artist who made a thoughtful piece with AI to comment on AI. It’s a bummer.

Effective hormone therapy has psychological effects within days, and physical effects within weeks.
Participants in the control group will know they are in the control group shortly after the start of the trial. This makes the trial impractical and unethical.

I am an NFT thinker. Each of my thoughts is an NFT. If I seem momentarily confused, it’s because a block is taking longer to produce than expected.
Wait I missed an opportunity there around the concept of a “mental block” can we re-record thi
NFT art is art, art NFTs are art.
NFTs *secure* an *identifier* that you can attach data to, but that data can still be copied.
To claim that they thereby *securitize* that data (what data?) is therefore mystification, or credulity, draped in the garb of critique.
Last year, various people told me I was lying when I said that proof of stake was possible (and operational on other chains since 2012…) and/or that Ethereum would adopt it soon and/or that it would reduce energy usage significantly.
I wasn’t lying.
Like it’s great that you can get clout and/or cash for saying NFTs bad, and that this skill was simply repurposed from whatever you were saying was bad before, and can simply be repurposed to the next thing, but that’s not critique. That’s grift.

OK but they may be a group of men so devoted to a goddess that they castrate themselves and dress and act as women. That is a perfectly coherent and much simpler explanation than no I can’t keep a straight face I’m sorry but
The linked Wikipedia discussion is an ontological trainwreck. NFTs are not art any more than canvas is, but oil on canvas artworks exist. Sadly, Wikipedia views reality through the lens of mainstream American media, so what is needed is an NYT article saying “NFTs are art”.
🚨 Art Emergency!! 🚨
There is a debate happening rn on
@Wikipedia
that has the potential to * officially categorize NFTs as ‘not art’ on all of Wikipedia. *
Wikipedia is a global source of truth. Having NFTs categorized as ‘not art’ would be a disaster!
🧵:
1. The “trust” of Satoshi’s white paper isn’t interpersonal confidence, it’s awareness of a treacherous mediator.
2. Trust, in the good sense, and reliance, in the good sense, are different.
3. Getting offchain truth onchain is hard.
4. These are oooooooooooold debates in crypto.
I’m working on art, which is great, but I’m suffering a bit from performance anxiety because whatever I do next will be in the public eye in a way it hasn’t been before (>0 where previously 0).
So, wow. 🥳
@robertalice_21
and Sotheby's did an amazing job presenting the work. I'm glad that some of the sale is going to the minting fund & offsetting the energy use of the sale. Thank you so much to everyone who bid, and *thank you* to all of you here for your support.
A big thank you to all the transphobes reposting my current profile pic in which I am stood in front of my art in a gallery while having no make up on, jet lag, and travel hair, looking proud and happy.
I’d forgotten how good that moment felt. ☺️
You, a philosopher: The "Chinese Room" thought experiment proves that computational Strong AI is impossible.
Me, some rando: The "Chinese Room" thought experiment proves that thought of any kind is impossible under naturalism.
This is probably only the second time in the last decade that I’ve stopped to think about what I’ve contributed to the world of crypto art. The other time was when

I tweet about many things, not always seriously. I will eventually tweet about what you followed me for again. 🙂

NFTs are about managing your rights in a medium with built-in payment and provenance. They also facilitate collaboration and restore a sense of individual ownership that CC doesn’t provide. That ownership (as every galaxy-brain points out) is of the token, not the work.

“It does not escape our notice that a queer trans person of color has been made the scapegoat for these accusations.”
Intersectionality-washing someone who is hoping to simply ignore the accusations that do in fact very clearly apply to them until they go away is not a good look.
We stand by the inclusion of the authors invited to our anthology. We oppose transphobia and harassment in all its forms and hope you do too. Our intent is to support queer & trans voices in speculative fiction and to keep learning better ways to do that.
If you are scared of “wokeness”, “intersectionality” or “pronouns” you’re ngmi.
Sorry, I don’t make the rules, it’s just how markets process information.
Let me be extremely clear.
We all have to work together to realize the promise of crypto.
If you are being an asshole about the ideas of people you don’t understand, that is not working together.
If you are being an asshole about *people* you don’t understand, that is worse.

Heya all! My show opens tonight at Crypto Kiosk in Berlin. I’d love to see you there if you can make it. They have copies of my book available as well, and I will have a silver pen to hand. ☺️
