If you think the LDS Church's condemnation of Tim Ballard — given to media outlets including
@sltrib
and
@Deseret
— came from a "rogue" spokesperson and was not approved by the faith's highest authority, then you don't understand how the church and its leaders work.
Today is my 30th anniversary covering religion at The Salt Lake Tribune. Started on Nov. 4, 1991. Written more than 5,000 stories. It has been an amazing career (even with hate mail). Can't imagine a better beat.
Out of 33 speakers at last week's LDS Conference only 2 were women. What message does that send about the importance of women's voices in the male-dominated faith?
Speaking of ethics, why does a glowing story in
@Deseret
about the American Heritage School, which teaches science and history through the eyes of religion, fail to mention that the paper's editor Hal Boyd is on the school's board?
LDS leader Dallin H. Oaks in 2020: "[Obeying the laws of the land] ... means that we peacefully accept the results of elections. We will not participate in the violence threatened by those disappointed with the outcome."
At dawn on Jan 18, 1994, our 2-year-old daughter Camille died of congenital heart defects. For 25 years, we have gathered to celebrate her life on this day. To cry and to remember.
What do you think would be the harm to the LDS Church if women (or men) prayed to Heavenly Mother? Why do you think church leaders have said it is not appropriate to pray to Her? What do you think would be the benefit?
I've been watching old Friends' episodes while I exercise, and, for the most part, they are still pretty funny. But I cringe every time they mention that Monica was fat in high school. Each fat joke makes me wince and it is not infrequent. Anyone else bothered by that?
To work at BYU, you have to waive your right to any kind of confidential exchange with your bishop. Where can such employees get pastoral care — or are they all, um, perfect?
My 2-year-old daughter died at home in my husband's arms on Jan 18, 1994. This week has been a painful but holy time of remembrance as I heard other parents' stories of grief and loss. Anyone here lose a child? Tell me how it affected your life and faith.
This powerful and personal story has sharp criticisms of Operation Underground Railroad and Tim Ballard. Anyone else have experience with that group, which raises so much $$$ in Utah?
Why doesn't the LDS Church have a stated policy against gun violence like it has about other moral issues? Maybe it doesn't see such violence as a moral issue, but why not?
In a rare speech for a devotional, BYU professor urges students to make campus and Mormonism safe spaces for LGBTQ individuals, women and people of color , via

A descendant of Mormonism's founder Joseph Smith found the only known photo of him in a family heirloom. What do you think? Does it match what you think he looked like?
For the Rome LDS Temple dedication this weekend, the entire First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will be there.
The first time together in one location outside of the United States 🙏🏻
Here's a look at who's on the advisory board for the Latter-day Saints for Trump Coalition, which launched earlier this week:
The
@Ch_JesusChrist
, citing a position of political neutrality, declined today to comment on the coalition or the use of temple imagery in this flyer.
BYU-Idaho has banned a UVU music professor from ever speaking or performing on its campus. Reason? He spoke publicly about his loss of faith in the LDS Church.
But what is the harm of his playing the trumpet?
The LDS Church just announced its support for a bill before Congress that recognizes both legal same-sex marriage and religious exemptions. What do you think?
Good story by
@tamarranicole
about what seems like a possible trend at BYU-Idaho, where the LDS Church's Ecclesiastical Clearance Office, run by Clark Gilbert, overturns the endorsement of adjuncts by their bishops. Anyone else heard about this?
More LDS missionaries than ever are serving while dealing with depression, anxiety, OCD, insomnia and other mental health challenges — and mission presidents are having to adapt to this new reality. Former missionaries, what was your experience?
For some,
#DezNat
is a hashtag that helps them build community with other conservative Latter-day Saints. For others, it's a tool to bash those they see as apostates and a dog whistle to the alt-right.

Latter-day Saint apostle M. Russell Ballard has died at 95. I interviewed him several times. Here's
@sltrib
's obituary. Share anecdotes with me -- but be respectful, please.
BYU did not fire Fiona Givens. After our story ran, Givens wrote on Facebook that “I voluntarily made the decision to leave the Maxwell Institute to focus on my own study, writing and other personal endeavors."
Although Adam Smart disagreed with the

on gay marriage, he promised to keep his own views quiet during his mission. But when Smart lost his wallet with his temple recommend, his mission president said he wasn't comfortable issuing a new one.
A self-described queer Latter-day Saint women talked about her experience as part of the RS Presidency session at BYU Women's Conference. Pretty unusual and brave.

@Ch_JesusChrist
has released renderings of the new exterior of its Provo temple, getting rid of its modern-style "cloud" (some have described it as a "spaceship") design. Here it is...

In a new Deseret Book volume,
@WPaulReeve
explains how Brigham Young — not Joseph Smith — established the LDS temple/priesthood ban on Black members. Crucial knowledge for all Latter-day Saints to "weed out racism."

This is not a normal journalistic correction. It should have said, "A previous edition incorrectly identified Calvin Burke. He is a current member of the church." In my opinion, to try and justify the error makes it worse and, again, not a standard practice of good journalism.
Another view of the Hofmann documentary from Meg Conley, who makes a connection between his locked room in the basement that even his wife couldn't enter and the "locked rooms" of LDS priesthood and authority that keep women out.
After asking how new

Presidency would involve more people of color and international members in its decision-making, I got an email from a guy asking why I hate white people.
Mormon Land interview with
@MikeRezendes
, who wrote the recent AP story about the LDS Church and an Arizona horrific abuse case. Listen to him explain how he got onto the story and what surprised him about what he discovered. What do you think?
The LDS Church congratulates President-Elect Biden. Will it make a difference to members who continue to believe the election was "stolen" and that Trump will triumph in the end?
Guy posted this on my FB page below a story I wrote. "Is Peggy Fletcher the most miserable lady in Utah! She even hates herself. I can't imagine being such a low life as this lady." Not even close to the worst insult I've received. Reporters, share the favorites you've received.
in my one-on-one interview w/ LDS apostle David Bednar on Wed, I asked him what hair gel he used, since his coif is always impeccable. “None,” Bednar replied. “You want to touch it? He tipped his head so I could see. Yep, gel-free.
Lavina Fielding Anderson is a hero to many Mormon intellectuals. Here’s my story: Writer excommunicated during ‘September Six’ purge loses her bid to rejoin the LDS Church, via

Here's what's happening with Latter-day Saint women in the Bay Area -- an edict by an an area authority can undo a decade of a successful symbol of gender equity. No more Relief Society presidents on the stand.
This was written by my nephew and published in the Salt Lake Tribune today (I knew nothing about it before it appeared). What do you think? Only civil comments, please.
LDS leader Dallin H. Oaks in 2016: “When our positions do not prevail, we should accept unfavorable results graciously and practice civility with our adversaries.”
The Guardian newspaper is reporting that Matthew Cicotte , an asst a.g. in Alaska and a BYU grad, goes by

JReubenClark on Twitter. What do Latter-day Saints here think of him and his tweets?
The LDS Church doesn't build chapels like this anymore. Preservationists working to save ones like this from demolition. Look at those windows and decorations over the door. Thoughts?
Some say the current LDS General Relief Society presidency is the strongest since the era of Elaine Jack, Chieko Okasaki, and Aileen Clyde. Do you agree? Do you wish they could serve another term?
Could the way forward on same-sex marriage in Mormonism come from the LDS Church's evolving understanding of temple sealings? Here's a fascinating exploration. What do you think?
A sad day for Mormon historians and scholars. D. Michael Quinn died suddenly. Big loss for many personally and professionally. Share your stories of Mike here.
"LDS women will often tell their bishop, when questioned about it, that sex was nonconsensual because it’s 'easier.' They might be 'feeling regret,' he continued, for having sex before marriage..." Easier, really?
Check out my brief chat with new LDS apostle
@PatrickKearon
— yes, he's as compassionate in person as in talks and that British accent is still captivating. What do you think of the man?
BYU Prof. and LDS church leader Brad Wilcox issued a second apology for his speech last week. Was it more satisfying to you than the first? What is left for him to say?
LDS First Presidency asking all patrons and workers to wear face masks -- at all times — in all temples. What's been your recent experience with masks in temples?
